Alright, let’s set the scene: I’m standing in the heart of Manchester, looking up at the majestic terracotta façade of the Kimpton Clocktower. This iconic building has been watching over the city since 1890 and today, I’m ready to take it on. Solo trip mode activated. Let’s go!
Check-In & First Impressions at Kimpton Clocktower
Walking into the Kimpton Clocktower is like stepping into a classic movie set, except it’s real and I’m not dreaming. The lobby? Oh, it’s a stunner. The kind of place where you’d want to kick back with a cocktail and pretend you’re in a music video. From the massive bronze horse (yes, you read that right) to the chic modern vibes that mesh seamlessly with the Victorian architecture, this space is pure eye candy.
After a friendly check-in (and a quick chat about what vinyl records I might want to play in my room—because that’s a thing here), I grab my key and head up.
Finding My Room (or Attempting To)
Now, let’s talk corridors. The Kimpton is a bit of a maze, but in the best way possible. Think secret passageways, winding halls and hidden nooks. It’s like the hotel wants you to get a little lost and I’m not mad about it. I finally find my room, and whoa, it’s loft-style with ceilings high enough to make even a skyscraper feel short. Vibrant textiles, velvet furnishings and Manchester’s worker bee subtly woven into the décor give it all a super stylish, local vibe. Plus, there’s a yoga mat waiting for me. Namaste, Kimpton.
Afternoon Exploring (With a Vinyl Soundtrack)
After freshening up (because you know I took advantage of the “Forgot It? We’ve Got It” service to grab a toothbrush), I decide to spend the afternoon playing tourist. But not before setting the tone with a vinyl record from their eclectic collection. I opt for a little classic rock, because, well, Manchester rocks.
The hotel’s location is pretty much perfect. I’m a short walk from Canal Street, where I pop into a few lively bars and just a hop away from the best shops. Manchester’s energy is contagious and it’s one of those cities where even a solo traveler feels like they’re part of the vibe.
24 Hours at the Kimpton Clocktower: Manchester’s Most Characterful Hotel
There is something quietly thrilling about pulling up to the Kimpton Clocktower for the first time. The terracotta façade, the Victorian architecture that has anchored this corner of Manchester since 1890, the sense that the building has been here long enough to have opinions about the city it watches over. And then you walk through the door and it gets even better. A bronze horse in the lobby. Complimentary vinyl records to play in your room. A Social Hour with craft beers that turns strangers into dinner companions within about twenty minutes. The Kimpton Clocktower is the kind of hotel that makes a solo trip feel like a decision made by an extremely cool, extremely well-travelled version of yourself. One night in, and it becomes obvious why this place has become one of Manchester’s most talked-about addresses.
What Makes the Kimpton Clocktower Worth a Solo Visit?
The short answer is everything, but the longer answer is that the hotel has understood something most properties get wrong: the details carry the experience. The loft-style rooms with their soaring ceilings and velvet furnishings are beautiful, but it’s the yoga mat already waiting by the window and the “Forgot It? We’ve Got It” service that make you feel genuinely looked after. The location puts Canal Street and the best of Manchester’s shopping and bar scene within easy walking distance, making the hotel a genuine base rather than a destination you retreat to. And dinner at The Refuge next door is not an optional add-on. It is a necessary end to the evening.

Social Hour & The Refuge Bar
After my city adventures, it’s time for Social Hour at the hotel’s ‘Post Room.’ From 5-6pm, guests can sip on complimentary wine and craft beers and it’s the perfect excuse to make some new friends or, like me, people watch to your hearts content. I chat with a few fellow travellers, get some solid recommendations and even end up with a dinner plan.
Dinner at The Refuge is a must. Imagine small plates that taste as good as they look, a killer drinks menu and an ambiance that makes you want to stay all night. I sip on a ginger ale in a wine glass (because who says you can’t be classy and sober?), savouring the flavours and the vibe. After sampling a few dishes (don’t sleep on the small plates), I finish off the night with a wander through The Den—a cozy, retro spot with pool tables and table football. It’s like someone mashed up a fancy bar and a cool basement hangout and I’m here for it.
Morning Vibes & Goodbye Kimpton
The next morning starts with a candle-lit bath (my fave way to start any day), a little in-room yoga and a coffee run to the lobby. There’s a charming corner shop with local treats and magazines, plus a florist that brightens up the space with bouquets and plants. I almost buy a cactus, but I’m traveling light this trip.
HotI linger in the lobby, taking in the grandeur one last time, knowing I’ll be back. The Kimpton Clocktower isn’t just a hotel; it’s an experience. It’s like Manchester wrapped up everything I love about the city—the music, the style, the warmth—and put it under one big, beautiful roof.
