Home style trends are constantly changing, and keeping up can seem like a full-time job. With some extra time, a little elbow grease and a dash of creativity, you can update your home with this year’s hottest design trends. Here’s how.

1. Colorful Kitchens

This year, monochrome kitchens got a colorful makeover. Design experts predicted that all-white kitchens would be out and colorful kitchens would be in, and they seem to be onto something. The increase of color is seen in a range of different areas, from the cabinetry and countertops to the paint on the kitchen walls. Don’t shy away from bold color choices. Instead, opt for retro pinks, bold matte-black or classic yellow hues. And, when styling your colorful kitchen, the right lighting can work wonders. Not only is task lighting essential to everyday kitchen duties like chopping veggies or reading recipes, under-cabinet task lighting can also plays a vital role in the look of your kitchen. When choosing your lighting style, choose a clear-hued LED style for crisp, clean lighting that perfectly illuminates your kitchen space and accents all the bold colors. Task lighting, such as under-cabinet lighting is affordable, and it is easy to install. Plus there are varying styles to choose from, based on your preferences and lighting needs.

2. Mixed Metals

Forget what you know about coordinating your metals. Mixing metals is in. And the 2018 home design trend is easy to incorporate in your own home. There are likely ample opportunities to try out this trend in your own space, just take a look at your cabinetry fixtures or that old mirror that could use a little sprucing up. Upcycle an old mirror and give it a fresh new look with a metallic makeover. Make sure to clean the mirror frame before you begin. Line the glass with newspaper so that you don’t get any paint on the mirror glass. Lay down an old sheet and then get to painting using long, sweeping movements. Wait a few minutes and then give the frame a second coat of metallic paint. Let it dry for about an hour or so, then hang. You can further incorporate this trend by painting a few accessories or fixtures in metallic hues and place them throughout the space for a cohesive look.

3. Statement Ceilings

You’ve heard of statement walls. Now, the statement ceiling is all the rage. There are a few ways you can go about creating your own statement ceiling. First, consider painting it. If you’re up for a challenge, and want to create a look that is even bolder, opt for wallpaper. While it can be tricky, wallpaper on the ceiling can make a dramatic statement and really make a room pop. Working with wallpaper tiles is best. And before applying the wallpaper of your choice, it is key to make sure that your ceiling is in tip-top-shape. This includes filling all holes, spackling and sanding all imperfections, and giving the ceiling a good old fashioned scrub down.

Design trends don’t have to break the bank. A little DIY attitude can go a long way in making your dollar stretch and your home stylish.
