We all lead busy lives in this day and age. Thanks to smartphones and the internet, sometimes it’s hard to shaket hat feeling of always having to be “on.” This can lead to even stronger feelings of anxiety or depression in some people. In fact, a startling 40 million adults in the United States reportedly suffer from anxiety.

How can we overcome these feelings? One way is through activities. Getting active, being creative, and putting your mind and body to work comes with a number of benefits. Better yet, these are all things you can do at home to help you feel better.

1. Organizing Your Home

This one seems very obvious – clean up your home, and you’ll feel better. However, that’s not what we have in mind here. You know that one corner in your home that is very cluttered but very important to you? Something like a shelf in the living room with all your home movies, old family photo albums, and just memory boxes? Now, normally, you’d live that as is, since you can actually find your way in that mess and show that 5th-grade photo to your guest in a blink of an eye.

If you are feeling low though, starting to work on that corner will have multiple benefits. First, you may lose an hour or two just going through those old photos, videos and enjoy going down the memory lane. Second, if you manage to reorganize it, or even set aside the ones that you want to save and digitize. You can check out EverPresent to find help with your videotapes, as you really need to use a professional service to do this right and in a quality way.

2. Sleep

That’s right, sleeping is one of the best ways to feel better. Have you ever heard the saying “things will feel better when you wake up” or “it’ll be better in the morning?” These might be far-fetched, but there is some magic to sleep.

When we sleep, our bodies recover from the day. When you’re sleep deprived this hits your hippocampus harder than the amygdala. Your amygdala is what processes negative emotions while neutral memories get processed by the hippocampus. That means when you’re tired, you’ll often feel down on yourself. Taking a nap or catching up on sleep will do just the trick.

3. Go Outside

In our cyber-driven world, it’s easy to feel trapped inside. When was the last time you actually spent time in nature? Spending time in nature, especially in sunlight, will do wonders for your mood. Even if the weather isn’t great, taking in some fresh air will improve your mood all the same.

4. Plan a Trip

Did you know that the best part of a trip is actually the planning stage? All of that anticipation and excitement is what really make a trip special. As the saying goes, it’s about the journey not the destination.

The next time you’re feeling anxious or sad, take some time to plan a trip. It can be a fun day with friends or even just a solo trip to a new town. Put it on the calendar for a few weeks from now. It doesn’t matter if you actually go, but having something to look forward to is always fun.

5. Help Others

Last but not least, why not help others? While you should always help yourself first, taking time to help others can go a long way to making you feel better both inside and outside. Is there an organization you can help out in your community or can you drop in on an old friend who needs help around the house? It doesn’t matter how you make a difference as long as you’re making someone’s day better.

Final Thoughts

We could all use a bit more happiness and joy in our lives. When things get going, it can be hard to remember the importance of doing things for yourself. Remember, improving your life shouldn’t be an afterthought.

These activities above are all things that will help you feel better. From leading a healthier life to helping others, every moment counts.
