If you follow different trends and read fashion blogs, you have most probably come across some rules that have to be followed. Though some rules are quite helpful and legit, some aren’t. Nobody knows who made these rules and where they came from, they are just followed blindly, and they smother any sense of personal style.

Just consider the fact that some of the most iconic trendsetters did not abide by the rules of fashion, which allowed them to create a unique and bold style that is followed by others. Therefore, today we are going to tell you about some well-known fashion rules that you shouldn’t worry about much.

Rule 1. Sweatpants should only be worn at home:

This is a famous fashion myth that has been around for a while. Many people believe that baggy sweatpants are just leisurewear that you throw on when you want to sleep, relax or workout. However, this rule is one by which you don’t need to abide.

Sweatpants and sweatshirt combos are very trendy these days, in fact, last year high-end brands like Gucci and Supreme also added sweatpants to their showcase. Therefore, if you are feeling lazy, or you want a stylish and comfortable to wear an outfit, wear sweatpants.

Rule 2. You should dress according to your age:

Age is just a number, and it shouldn’t restrict you from adopting any style or look you want. However, you may have come across a fashion rule that older people shouldn’t follow fashion trends, or in other words, they should dress maturely.

On the contrary, I believe that your fashion reflects your personality, and if you have a lively personality and you are still young at heart, you should be able to dress that way. Therefore, it is a lame fashion rule that you should ignore, and you should wear whatever you want without worrying, whether it is age appropriate.

Rule 3. Leather is only for the winters:

As leather is a considerably heavier material than something like cotton, it should be worn alone in winter. Well, why do they make leather shorts, mini leather dresses and cropped leather jackets?

This is a lame rule that hinders your creativity and style, moreover, in places like New York where the nights can get quite chilly even during the summers, why not throw a cropped leather jacket over your dress or a simple white t-shirt.

People have the same concept about denim jackets, and it is a rule that you do not need to follow.

Rule 4. You can’t wear white after labours day:

Nobody knows who came up with the concept that white is a colour only for the summers and spring. Though dark and earthy colours do take a more massive spotlight in the fall and winter, white still has a lot of potentials.

We do see some accents of white, like wearing a shirt inside a jacket, but very few people wear completely white outfits after Labor Day. This useless trend needs to change. White is a fantastic colour when it comes to fashion, it makes every skin tone glow, and it can match with almost any colour.

Rule 5. Your bag and shoes should match:

For a long time, there has been a widespread misconception in the fashion community that your shoes and handbag should always match. This is another pointless rule, that doesn’t make any sense in the current day and age.

People are wearing a lot of different colours in their shoes, and you can carry handbags in various shades as well. Though simple colours like black, brown and white are more common, there certainly isn’t anything wrong with investing is a unique personal style. I believe that you can pull almost anything off if you carry yourself with confidence.

Rule 6: you shouldn’t mix patterns in your outfit:

Conventional wisdom would suggest that mixing various patterns in an outfit can make it look messy and unthoughtful. For a long time, it was thought to be a complete fashion sin to incorporate something like stripes with polka dots; however, the trends are changing, and this rule should be thrown out the window as well.

Many recent fashion shows have shown an elegant mixture of patterns, and numerous celebrities have also supported this look. Therefore, don’t let this limitation hold you down, and mix and match whatever patterns you want until you can find a unique and exceptional outfit.

Rule 7. Socks and Sandals don’t go together:

For as long as I can remember, I thought that wearing socks with sandals is a considerable fashion sin. Moreover, logically you could say that what’s the purpose of wearing socks with sandals when you could wear shoes. I used to think the same, but that’s not the mentality of a trendsetter.

My views about this fashion rule changed when I saw named brands like Hermes and Burberry show this trend on their runway. Though I’m still somewhat sceptical of this trend, I guess that you don’t have to worry about this rule if you are a trendsetter.

Rule 8. It would be best if you didn’t mix gold and silver jewellery:

It has become an unsaid rule that you have to keep gold with gold and silver with silver when it comes to jewellery. Like the other rules on this list, this is another entirely pointless one, especially in the case of day to day jewellery wear.

For your everyday outfit, pairing gold and silver can be a creative idea, because usually, very little jewellery is worn.

Lastly, I would like to say that though fashion magazines and blogs can be helpful, the actual thing that matters is your confidence. This is why when fashion icons wear something unorthodox, it becomes a trend, and if someone who isn’t recognized wears the same thing, it is considered a style-sin. Therefore, aim to be so confident that anything you wear, whether it confines to the unnecessary rules of fashion or not, becomes an instant trend.
