The two most common pets in homes are dogs and cats. 25% of all homes in the US have cats as pets. It is believed that there are more than 250 million pet cats worldwide. This clearly shows the popularity of cats as pets. Cats are small animals that are easy to manage. They are also very clean and don’t require too much cleaning or toilet training.

This is why many homes are choosing to keep a cat as a pet. If you are planning to get a cat, then this guide will be helpful. We will tell you all you want to know about cats as pets.

Should you get a cat?

Before you get a cat, decide whether you should get one. Here are some things to consider:

While cats are low-maintenance pets, they need your time. You need to spend time caring for them. Some types of cats need to be groomed properly.

Like dogs, cats also need attention from the vet. They need to be vaccinated and may require regular health checkups.

You cannot feed cats the same food you eat. You may need to get them special cat food.

Some people are allergic to cat hair. This is something you need to consider before you get one.

If you already have pets, you need to plan your cat introduction properly. While most dogs and cats get along well, there are possibilities of fights.

Cats need a litter box and the box needs regular cleaning. If you cannot find time for it, then you need to rethink getting a cat.

There are stray cats you can consider adopting. There are many instances of stray cats giving you their kittens. The best source for your pet cat is your local animal shelter. You can also consult your vet for suggestions on where to get a cat/kitten.

2) The Breed

If you have specific requirements, then you can choose to get a specific breed. For example, Persian cats are beautiful and make attractive pets. However, they are high maintenance and there would be a lot of shedding of hair. You need to understand the pros and cons of different breeds before choosing one.

3) Vet care

Even before you get your pet cat, you need to choose a veterinary doctor. Select a doctor recommended by relatives or friends or choose one who is reputed. The vet will advise you on choosing a cat. Once you get the cat, take it to the vet to get it neutered. If you are planning to breed cats, then avoid this step. Else, it is strongly advised to get your kitten neutered once it turns 8 weeks.

The vet will tell you about the vaccines needed. Take your cat as per the schedule and get it vaccinated. Routine medical checkups are needed. You also need to take your cat to the vet if it has any health issues. This is why you need to choose a reliable vet, preferably one who is close by.
