During her 24-hour escape to Langdale Chase, Laura Bartlett found herself immersed in a mix of history, charm and lakeside serenity that felt like pure magic.
As I pulled up to Langdale Chase, my breath was stolen by the sight before me. The grand Victorian mansion, nestled amidst lush greenery and overlooking the shimmering expanse of Lake Windermere, was straight out of a Jane Austen novel. It was as if I’d stumbled upon my very own castle, where I was about to be treated like a queen for 24 hours.
Walking into Langdale Chase felt like stepping through a time machine, but in the best way possible. Those big, old oak doors swung open and suddenly I was in a place where history and modern vibes mingled like they’d been best friends for years. The lobby was bathed in sunlight pouring through the huge windows, giving everything a golden glow. There were antique armchairs, elegant touches everywhere and even a fire crackling away in the hearth, adding just the right amount of cozy warmth to the crisp autumn air. It was a perfect blend of classic charm and modern comfort, setting the tone for what was going to be a pretty awesome stay.
Langdale Chase has been a gem on the shores of Lake Windermere since it first opened as a hotel in 1937, but its story began even earlier. Originally built in 1890 as a lavish private residence, the property has always been known for its stunning lakeside views and lush gardens, designed by renowned landscape architect Thomas Mawson. Over the years, it’s become a beloved spot in the Lake District, keeping much of its historical charm while evolving with the times. Now, after a recent extensive renovation, the hotel has been transformed into a modern retreat that still celebrates its roots, bringing back the elegance of the 1920s and 1930s—the golden era of the Lake District. It’s a place where history and style meet, making it one of the most iconic addresses by the lake.
Afternoon Tea
Our afternoon at Langdale Chase was straight out of a storybook—literally. We decided to try the new Swallows and Amazons-inspired afternoon tea, celebrating 50 years since the classic film brought Arthur Ransome’s beloved tale to life. It was extra special because I got to enjoy it with my mum and we had the best time soaking up the lakeside views together.
The staff brought so much enthusiasm and passion to the experience, explaining every detail of the menu with a sparkle in their eyes that made the whole thing even more delightful. We settled on the terrace, where we could see Windermere glistening under the afternoon sun and it was easy to imagine ourselves as part of the Swallows crew, getting ready to set sail.
The themed tea was pure magic. Picture delicate sandwiches with smoked salmon and beetroot, mini cheddar donuts and potted shrimp on crumpets—all inspired by the adventures from the book. But the real stars were the sweet treats: chocolate and marmalade fancies, gooseberry choux and the adorable “Titty’s Bun Loaf,” each one with its own nod to the story. And the setting was just as charming, with the tea served on hand-painted crockery made by local artisans, adding a beautiful, homemade touch to the experience. It’s safe to say, Langdale Chase nailed this one—afternoon tea has never felt so enchanting!
The Suite
Staying in the Pikes Suite at Langdale Chase was an absolute dream. From the moment we walked in, we knew this was going to be something special. The suite is tucked up in the turret, giving it a secluded, almost magical feel and the views were simply breathtaking. My mum and I spent hours curled up in the cozy chairs by the turret windows, watching boats glide across Lake Windermere, the water shimmering in the afternoon light. It was the kind of peace you don’t get to experience often—just the two of us, wrapped in blankets, sipping tea and chatting while the world moved gently outside.
The highlight of the Pikes Suite? For me, it had to be the bath. Positioned perfectly by the window, it felt like it was made for my favourite morning ritual—candle-lit baths. There’s nothing quite like soaking in warm, fragrant water, candles flickering, while looking out over Lake Windermere as the morning mist lifts. The marble bathroom was spacious, with lovely Bath House products that added a touch of indulgence, filling the air with soothing scents. So much so, I couldn’t resist an evening dip either, glass of 0% wine in hand, watching the sunset cast golden hues over the water. Those views were everything—boats drifting by, the fells in the distance and a sense of calm that made the whole experience feel extra special. It was as if the suite was designed to offer the perfect escape and for those moments, the world outside could wait.
Dining
Dinner at Langdale Chase was an experience I won’t forget anytime soon. We started with a platter of fresh oysters, served on a bed of ice with a tangy mignonette that brought out their briny sweetness. It felt indulgent, but the atmosphere was so warm and welcoming, it was like treating ourselves at home. For the main course, I went for the lamb and it was perfection—tender, succulent and served with a rich, herb-infused jus that tied all the flavours together. Each bite felt like a nod to the Lake District’s culinary roots and you could tell they put real care into sourcing local produce.
Since I’m sober, I sipped on ginger ale served in a wine glass, which added a nice touch of elegance without missing out on the fun. The best part, though, was chatting with the staff. They were so passionate and knowledgeable, taking the time to tell us all about the local ingredients and the story behind each dish. It felt less like dining out and more like being welcomed into a community that’s proud of its food and its roots. The whole meal was topped off with views of the lake through the dining room’s floor-to-ceiling windows—just the right backdrop for a delicious, memorable evening.
A Sunrise Run and Lakeside Relaxation
There’s something magical about starting the day with a sunrise run along the shores of Lake Windermere. The air was crisp, the sky was just beginning to blush with the first light of day and it felt like the whole world was still asleep. As I ran, the lake mirrored the pastel sky, a perfect reflection that made it feel like I was gliding over water. It was the kind of peaceful, meditative moment that reminds you why the Lake District is so special—like my own private version of a serene lake commute.
Afterward, my mum and I took our morning coffees down to the jetty, settling into the cozy chairs to watch the world wake up. Boats drifted lazily by, birds skimmed the water’s surface and the gentle sounds of the lake created a kind of calm you don’t find every day. We just sat there, wrapped in blankets, chatting and letting time pass without a care. It was one of those simple, perfect moments that makes you feel deeply connected to everything around you.
Moments to Memories
Looking back on our stay, it’s hard to put into words just how special Langdale Chase truly is. From the moment we stepped through those grand oak doors, everything felt magical—like stepping into a different world where time slowed down and every detail was designed to help you unwind and soak in the beauty of the Lake District. The Pikes Suite, the incredible food, the morning run by the lake and those quiet moments on the jetty with my mum—it all came together to create an experience that was pure bliss. The warmth of the staff, the elegance of the design and that perfect balance of history and modern comfort made it unforgettable.
It’s no wonder Langdale Chase has earned a spot in my top 5 hotels in England, it’s a hotel that has earned a rightful place in my heart.
