Al fresco dining might not be the first thing that springs to mind when you think of London…we’re not exactly famed for our glorious weather, after all. But what the city lacks in year-round sunshine, it more than makes up for in brilliant terraces. From sky-high rooftops with sweeping views to leafy courtyards tucked away from the bustle, London knows how to do outdoor dining properly — come rain, shine, or that in-between drizzle we’ve all come to know and tolerate.
Now, with a welcome warm spell sweeping through the capital (a rare but appreciated phenomenon), Londoners are soaking up every sun-drenched moment — and understandably steering clear of being stuck indoors. Naturally, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to scout out the best spots for eating and drinking outside, so you don’t have to. Whether you’re after skyline views, lush surrounds or simply somewhere to ditch your coat and pretend you’re on holiday, here’s where to book for the best al fresco dining in London this year.
Whether you’re catching up with friends over small plates and spritzes or planning a long, lazy lunch that turns into dinner (and maybe a cocktail or three), London’s outdoor dining scene has something to suit every vibe. From buzzy hotspots perfect for people-watching to more low-key spots made for romantic evenings, these terraces are serving looks and menus worth writing home about.
The Churchill Bar, central London

Launching on 5 May 2025, The Churchill Bar’s terrace is getting a lush makeover with its new Cacao Verde theme — and it’s nothing short of a tropical escape right in the middle of Marylebone. Think jungle-inspired greenery, calming tones, and a serious sense of serenity, all designed to whisk you away from the chaos of the city streets. But it’s not just about the scenery; this is the third instalment in the UNITY cocktail series, and the drinks are just as exciting as the setting. Inspired by cacao-producing nations, each cocktail has its own backstory and bold flavour to match. Basically, it’s where you’ll want to spend every sunny afternoon this spring.
Planning Your Perfect Outdoor Dining Experience
Successfully navigating London’s outdoor dining scene requires strategic planning beyond simply choosing attractive locations. Booking ahead proves essential during summer months when terraces fill quickly, particularly for prime sunset viewing times and weekend slots. Consider weather contingencies when making reservations—many establishments offer covered sections or heated areas that maintain al fresco ambiance whilst protecting against unpredictable British weather. Reviewing restaurant menus beforehand ensures offerings align with dietary preferences and group dynamics, whether seeking sharing plates for social gatherings or refined multi-course experiences for special occasions. Transportation logistics deserve attention too; selecting venues near public transport hubs or with nearby parking prevents logistical stress from diminishing dining enjoyment.
Maximizing Your Terrace Dining Experience
Enhancing outdoor dining experiences extends beyond location selection to encompass timing, atmosphere, and social dynamics. Arriving during golden hour captures optimal lighting for both ambiance and Instagram-worthy moments whilst avoiding peak crowd intensity. Many London establishments operate happy hour promotions between 4-7pm, offering significant savings on cocktails and small plates that stretch budgets without compromising quality. Consider venue vibes carefully—bustling beer gardens suit casual group catch-ups whilst intimate courtyards better serve romantic dinners or important conversations. Dress appropriately for transitional weather, bringing light layers that accommodate temperature drops as evening progresses. Finally, embrace the leisurely pace that outdoor dining encourages, allowing meals to extend naturally from lunch into dinner without rigid time constraints that indoor settings often impose.
HERA, East London

Stratford’s dining scene has a new sun-drenched star: HERA has officially opened its terrace, and it’s already shaping up to be East London’s go-to for Mediterranean vibes. The space is ideal for everything from spontaneous after-work catch-ups to long, leisurely dinners. The menu? Utterly dreamy. Expect the likes of Feta Saganaki drizzled with lemon honey, perfectly grilled calamari, seafood orzo and tender octopus tentacle, all washed down with cocktails during their daily happy hour (yes, that’s 4–7pm, Monday to Friday, and yes, it’s just £8 a drink). It’s basically a Greek holiday, minus the flight, and with London’s current spell of sunshine, you’re sure to get a tan, too!
Omeara, London Bridge
If rooftop cocktails and a bit of Shard-spotting sound like your kind of evening, Omeara’s new summer terrace in partnership with El Rayo Tequila needs to be on your radar. Right in the heart of London Bridge, this sun-soaked spot blends Mexican flair with proper London buzz. You’ll find refreshing tequila cocktails made for golden-hour sipping, plus a soundtrack curated for sunset chill right through to late-night energy. It’s bold, it’s fun, and it might just be your new favourite summer hangout.
The Dark Horse, north London

The Dark Horse is Camden’s latest gem and is bringing proper British pub energy to the Stable block with its recently opened terrace, which is the ideal perch for soaking it all in. Whether you’re winding down after a walk on Primrose Hill or dodging the crowds at Camden Market, this outdoor space offers a perfect pint-with-a-view moment. Inside, it’s all about vintage pub classics, great beer, and a serious music programme that nods to Camden’s rich musical roots. But outside? It’s simply the best seat in the house for people-watching with a pint and a pork pie.
Shiro, East London
Knowing that Shiro London is part of the popular Aqua Group, there’s definitely reason to go into this restaurant with high hopes — and boy, did it not disappoint. From a surprisingly delicious avocado tempura to both tasty and well-presented salmon and tuna tartare (complete with lotus root chips for serious scooping), the menu impressed from the start. The crystal sushi personally wasn’t for us, but it was an innovative venture all the same. We preferred the classic dishes, particularly enjoying the chutoro (fatty tuna belly), unagi (grilled eel), and hamachi (yellowtail) nigiris. A lowkey but ambient atmosphere, Shiro Sushi is one to book to enjoy the sunshine.
Engel, City of London

Looking for a touch of glamour with your outdoor tipple? Engel’s terrace at The Royal Exchange is pure theatre. Set across two levels (one overlooking the Bank of England, the other nestled beneath grand stone columns), it’s a stylish al fresco setting with a serious dose of old-school opulence. Inside, the vibe channels 1920s Berlin, complete with live cabaret and jazz, but outside is where summer sipping really shines. Graze on Austrian-German inspired plates (yes, there are hot dogs and schnitzel), treat yourself to a Champagne brunch (50% off bottles, no less), and let the historic surroundings do the talking. A hidden city centre gem if ever there was one.
Flat Iron Square, London Bridge
Flat Iron Square is always a good time — and now it’s even better with its sunny beer garden back in full swing, just in time for longer evenings and sporting showdowns. With 16 massive screens (one of them a whopping 16ft), it’s a dream spot for footy fans and sunseekers alike. Add in 2-for-1 margaritas on Wednesdays and an impressive line-up of new street food vendors, including over-fire Greek eats from Opa, Michelin-worthy Neapolitan pizzas from Dough, and next-level fried chicken at Flock — and you’ve got a solid excuse to spend all day here. Sport, snacks, and spritzes? Sorted.
PYRÃ, north London

Tucked away on Queen’s Park’s buzzy Lonsdale Road, PYRÃ’s terrace is a bit of a hidden gem — and the perfect place to linger over bold Mediterranean flavours. Helmed by chef Mattia Caddeo (20+ years of kitchen creds), this is where rustic Spanish and Greek cooking meets laid-back London cool. From grilled octopus skewers to paella arancini, veal chops, and show-stopping lamb shoulder, the menu is hearty, flavour-packed, and perfect for sharing. Pair it all with a crisp Spanish white or a robust Greek red and you’re laughing. Ideal for golden-hour grazing and people-watching all afternoon long.
