Allergies are never fun, but that doesn’t mean you have to compromise on your home decor. Here are some decorating tips for your home to help reduce those allergic reactions.

1. Clean everything

This is one of the most important things you can do to lessen your triggers. Allergens like dust, mold, and pollen thrive in stuffy, cluttered places so make sure this issue is addressed before anything else. Grab your vacuum, mop, and cleaning spray, and get to cleaning.

This is a regular thing that you should do so you’ll want to set a schedule for cleaning each room in your home. For example, the kitchen needs to be cleaned everyday, meanwhile, the bathroom can be cleaned once a week every Friday, and so on. By doing this, you reduce your chances of having an allergic reaction.

2. Bring in plants

Plants do more than just freshen up a room, they also remove toxins and improve the air quality.

Consider bringing in a couple of indoor plants in your home. Some really good ones for purifying air include Devil’s Ivy, Peace Lily, Philodendron, Spider Plant, Chrysanthemums, Boston Fern, Areca Palms, and Weeping Fig. Don’t worry about maintenance as these plants thrive indoors. And if in doubt, you can always look up online how to best care for specific plant species.

3. Change your furniture

You spend a third of your life sleeping so you should really look into what materials your bed is made of. These could be contributing to your allergic reactions. Look at what materials your mattress has. The best one for allergy sufferers should be hypoallergenic and made of natural, organic materials.

You should also do the same for your sheets. Avoid all synthetic linens since those contain chemicals that can irritate your nose and skin. Instead, go for natural fabrics like cotton, linen, and silk. And make it a point to change these regularly.

4. Opt for leather

When it comes to your couch and other types of seating, leather is best. Yes, it’s more expensive but it’s a great investment. Not only will it last you for decades, but it also prevents those allergic reactions from coming up. Then there’s the added bonus of it being easy to clean. Avoid upholstered furniture as allergens tend to thrive in those environments. Even if you vacuum it regularly, dust mites can still live in it.

5. Embrace natural light

Ditch your heavy drapes and allow all that natural light to come into your home. You get to highlight your decor more and avoid dust that tends to accumulate on curtains. If you must use curtains, go for ones that are made of natural fiber like cotton, silk, or linen. And like your bedding, your curtains should also be washed regularly to prevent allergens from building up.

6. Hard flooring instead of carpets

Carpets are one of your worst enemies because they trap dust and other particles can aggravate your allergic symptoms. You’ll want to avoid having these in your home; instead, go for flooring made of wood, laminate, or tile. These are better for your health and they’re easier to clean too!

7. Get an air purifier

If you still find yourself sneezing after you’ve followed all the steps above, it’s time to bring in the air purifier. This machine does a great job at removing microscopic allergens in the air. There are plenty of beautiful models in the market so you don’t have to worry about it not blending with your home’s aesthetic. Pick one in a size and function that works best for your space, and you should be enjoying an allergen-free home in no time. .
