Team Coco’s Lydia Matthews checks into the Sofitel Darling Harbour, where French elegance meets Sydney’s sparkling skyline. From rooftop dips to refined dining, she discovers how this five-star stay blends Parisian charm with Aussie allure.
Sydney is the type of city where you want to get stuck in – whether it’s joining the 6am run clubs pounding the Bondi pavement, squeezing into sun-drenched pubs by Friday afternoon, or being first through the gates at the weekend markets to secure the best local finds. Living it up at ground level in one of the world’s most electric cities definitely has its perks, but this time, we were craving a different view for a weekend. So, we checked into the Sofitel Darling Harbour, for the ultimate Sydney staycation, to experience Sydney from a different (and more elevated) angle.
The luxury hotel is spread over 33 floors in Darling Harbour’s tallest building; boasting 590 expansive rooms and suites complete with floor-to-ceiling windows, the views of Sydney’s skyscrapers and buzzing harbour are nothing short of phenomenal. After being greeted with the sprinkle of French hospitality that the Sofitel brand is known for, we were whisked to our luxury corner room with expansive bedroom kitted out with French-inspired amenities, and an exquisite bathroom with one of the best views in Sydney with glass on two sides. This was arguably the best bubble bath vista in Australia. The decor was lavish yet understated, the perfect mix of chic but with a complete feeling of calm and comfort for a rejuvenating city staycation.
Our room was a lavish Club Millésime room, located on the higher floors overlooking the city. As a result, we had access to the exclusive retreat located on Level 35 during the stay and took in the magnificent panoramas of Darling Harbour and the skyline. Club Millésime benefits include five-star butler service, private check-in & out, complimentary à la carte breakfast, delicious afternoon tea seven days a week, and daily ‘Apéro Chic’ for evening drinks & canapés.

Luxury, Local Delights, and Scenic Adventures at Sofitel Darling Harbour
We woke up in the clouds, cocooned in crisp pillowy softness in the signature Sofitel MyBed, feeling truly rested for the first time in weeks. The stress of busy city life simply disappeared overnight, as if the bed itself had untangled every knot of tension. After fuelling for the day with delicious options from the buffet breakfast, buttery croissants showcasing the French heritage, eggs Benedict, and steaming tea, we ventured out into the city to explore with fresh eyes.
We ducked away from Sydney’s busy beaches to The Copper Mill in Alexandria, a hidden gem café that feels more local than tourist. Their flat white was one of the best we had tried in Sydney, and the Rocky Road? Gooey, crunchy perfection. With caffeine and sugar pumping through our system, we had just enough energy to take on the Bondi to Coogee walk, the 6km coastal trail with tucked-away coves, great people watching and ocean pools to stop for a swim.
Nestled in the heart of Darling Harbour, the glistening water is never far from the hotel and neither are all the foodie delights of Sydney. Later in the afternoon, we hopped on the ferry to Freshwater and landed at St Alma, a breezy, coastal Mexican spot where chef Mauricio serves up sunshine on a plate. The barramundi taco was light and zesty, while the king prawn tostada with avocado and guajillo pâté was the kind of dish you think about long after the last bite. With bold flavours and a laid-back beachy vibe, it felt like the perfect early evening spot.
On the way back to the city across the water, the Opera House sails gleamed white against the metallic cityscape, while the Harbour Bridge arched proudly across the bay. We knew we had an evening of activity and delicious drinks ahead.
Back at the Sofitel Darling Harbour, we checked out the selection of seasonal cocktails as part of the new autumn menu at Lumière on Thirty Five. To celebrate the sensational global Vogue X Sofitel partnership, Sofitel has teamed up with Grey Goose Vodka and serve up a chic cocktail called ‘Martini a la Mode’ that includes Grey Goose, Martini Ambrato Vermouth, orange blossom honey, and lemon.
For something both bitter and sweet at the same time, with a little bit of nuttiness, we also indulged in ‘The Latino’ with mezcal, vermouth, and delicious orange bitters and chowed down on the Scotch quail eggs and the famous Pacific oysters on the menu. Young, stylish Sydney professionals flocked to the bar for sunset, creating the perfect buzzy atmosphere – clearly the Thursday pitstop of the moment.

Luxury and Relaxation at Sofitel Darling Harbour: The Ultimate Sydney Staycation Experience
Beyond its culinary credentials and the five vibrant bars and restaurants, Sofitel Darling Harbour offers an array of experiences for the perfect city staycation. Sydneysiders rise with the sun, and so on our final day, we fully joined in and began with a sunrise swim in the infinity pool followed by a Peloton session in the 24-hour fitness centre. After cooling off, we sunk into the loungers at the stunning pool bar, The Rivage – “the shore”, which is a slice of the Riviera in the heart of the city. Is 11am too early for a chilled glass of Champagne?
For those craving further calm, the Sofitel offers an award-winning spa located on the fourth floor. The spa boasts a curated treatment menu combining French elegance and expert techniques with Australian botanicals for a rejuvenating experience, with serene harbour views to match. The de-stress massage I experienced at the spa was easily one of the best I’ve ever had, a perfect mix of firm pressure and pure, unadulterated calm. I emerged from the treatment room lighter, clearer, and more myself. Even Monday, with all its usual weight after a sublime weekend staycation, felt almost inviting.
The lead in rate for a Luxury Corner Room is $700 (AU) per night. More information can be found: www.sofitel.accor.com.
