Behind the Brand : CocoaCrave

Matt and Geri moved in together and shortly after Matt realised he would need to embrace his passion for chocolate. Each month he would surprise her with unique chocolate when she was bored of the same tastes. They discovered a shared passion for great tasting chocolate and so CocoaCrave was born.

Here, they talk to House of Coco about the brand, their plans for the future and more…

When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
CocoaCrave was officially launched on 1st July 2015 but we started working on it more than a year before that. We decided to start a chocolate company because of Geri really. When she moved in I had to embrace her passion for amazing chocolate and knew that the simple bar from Tesco wouldn’t cut it. We started going to chocolate festivals to discover new tastes, and then we decided to share our findings and take more people on a journey of chocolate discovery.

What’s your background?
We met at university during a lecture, 4 years later we now live together and look after our ‘baby’- CocoaCrave.

How many people are involved in the company and what are their roles?
It’s just the two of us for now, Matt’s dad helps a lot as well. As in any small business, we do everything, from selecting and packing the chocolates, to accounts, website optimisation, marketing, advertising and press…

If you could start over with the business, would you do anything differently?
Many things changed since we started, our vision evolved and we learnt a lot about the chocolate preferences of our customers. So far, we haven’t made any wrong choices when it comes to our luxury chocolate selections. Hopefully going forward, there won’t be anything we’d wish we would’ve done differently either.

What is the hardest challenge you have faced since starting the company?
Getting in front of our customers. There are bigger chocolate companies who dominate the market currently and have bigger marketing and advertising budgets to be at the forefront.

We have over 100 varieties of delicious chocolates and have had an overwhelming response from everyone who has bought a CocoaCrave subscription or gift box and because of that, we are certain we will grow.

Tell us one fact that people wouldn’t know about you?
Geri: Hmmm, I love chocolate but I wouldn’t go for a caramel one if I had a choice

Matt: Salted caramel chocolates are my absolute favourite

2015 is here, where do you plan on taking the brand?
To 2016 in the first instance… Joking. At the moment we are most excited about The Chocolate Festival in December at the Business Design Centre in London and getting to meet our customers in person. We can’t wait.

Which city do you most feel at home in, London, Paris or New York?
Simple London, great food and lots to do!

Three beauty products you can’t leave the house without?
Matt: I will let Geri answer this one…

Geri: I always have lipstick, although rarely put in on, Nivea hand cream and my glass nail file (not exactly a beauty product but definitely an essential)

Style means?
Matt: Another one for Geri!

Geri: Being elegant and yet comfortable and most of all, being confident.

Best thing about London to you?
London is great, such a universal place – there are infinite opportunities to explore, to learn, to do. And of course, to start your own business and make your passion for chocolate your job.

Statement shoe or statement bag?
Geri: Oh, statement bag for sure.

Matt: Yeah, me too.

If you had to, what piece of clothing would you wear everyday?
Geri: A good pair of jeans.

Matt: My Superman t-shirt – always says ‘I’m ready’ for whatever the day will be.

Favourite love song?
John Legend – All of me. You’re crazy and I’m out of my mind….

Best place for a coffee?
We prefer smaller independent coffee places, places with lots of character and home made recipes for hot chocolate. Doesn’t get better.

Most memorable piece of advice given to you?
If you believe in your dreams and commit to working hard, you can achieve anything.

Guilty pleasure?
Chocolate! Lots of it.

If you could spend 24h anywhere in the world, where would it be?
We’d go to Iceland in the glass domes hotel to gaze at the starts at night.

In future, how do you plan on expanding the company?
We have ambitious plans and with baby steps we are getting there. We are speaking with department stores, we are expanding our chocolate selection to cater for the more picky and specific tastes. The next couple of years will be very exciting for us.
