Skull Sugar Cosmetics® are for the fun and fashion forward, so perfect for the House of Coco reader! They offer a wide range of high performance pigments for the makeup artist, fashionista or makeup diva!
With a wide range of products, there is something for everybody and this brand has some excited things coming up. Team Coco went along to find out more…
When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
I launched Skull Sugar in December of 2012. I started the line because I was in need of quality cosmetics that held up to my standards of being free of harmful chemicals such as Talc & Paraben. I needed high impact pigments that would stand up to long hours and not harm the models skin.
Whats your background?
I have been a makeup artist for over 15 years and specialize in runway, print and film work as well as body painting and special effects.
How many people are involved in the label and whats the process behind launching a new piece?
Since the date of our official launch Skull Sugar has been a one woman show with the exception of my select makeup artist team who assists me for the major fashion shows we sponsor. Each time I launch something new I always ask the clients what they would like to see us do. I value the input of our consumers and it plays a large role in what we launch next.
If you could start over with the business, would you do anything differently?
If I could start over I would probably focus more on all of the background components that go into building a brand. It’s the small things that are sometimes forgotten and they become large things if left undone.
What is the hardest challenge you have faced since you started the company?
The largest challenge this far has been packaging. There are so many things that go into making everything compliant with all countries we distribute our products to.
Tell us one fact about you that people wouldn’t know?
Growing up I was incredibly shy and highly afraid of public speaking. To help myself gain confidence and public speaking abilities I went into pageantry. I was Mrs. Oregon Petite 2013 and crowned Mrs USA Petite at the national pageant. Im also the mother of a 16 year old and a 3 year old! Only those who already know me are aware of those things.
2015 is upon us, where do you plan on taking the brand?
For 2015 I am working on greater distribution channels and hope to be on the shelves of major retailers such as Sephora & Ulta Beauty.
To date, what has been the highlight since launching?
For me our Aha moments have been being published in Vogue UK as well as other notable magazines. It’s nice to see my little dream in the pages of such amazing publications!
What inspires each collection?
Most of my inspiration comes from colors, I am pretty good with predicting the colors that will be popular in each season. Beauty with edge is what inspires me to create.
