The 2014 CFDA – Council of Fashion Designers of America – Fashion Awards were held this week, Monday 2nd of June, at the Lincoln Centre in New York City. The annual show draws a mixture of fashion personalities, designers and Hollywood insiders.
Amongst other impeccably dressed celebrities, Rihanna was the star everyone is talking about. She awed her audience in a sheer dress that exposed plenty of skin yet looked elegant at the same time. She wore a custom Adam Selman fishnet dress, gloves and headscarf that are hand embellished with over 216,000 Swarovski crystals. Her jewellery was from Jacob & Co. and Paul Morelli. The 26-year-old singer, an undisputed fashion icon of the past few years, was awarded the 2014 Fashion Icon Award. Previous honorees have been Lady Gaga, Kate Moss and Johnny Depp.
Speaking of Rihanna before the show, designer Zac Posen called the pop star a fashion risk-taker, who skilfully melds red-carpet glamour with a rebellious streak.
“She takes risks and she marches to her own drum and she knows what she likes,” Posen told The Associated Press in an interview. “It’s been an incredible journey.”
Also being honoured at the glamorous awards ceremony was designer Tom Ford, who received the CFDS’s lifetime achievement award. The prestigious Founder’s Award was going to Bethann Hardison, a former model and modeling agent who has been a vocal champion for diversity on runways. The group’s international award was going to Raf Simons, of Dior.
Apart from show stopping Rihanna, other best dressed personalities were…
Solange Knowles in a Calvin Klein Collection dress, Jennifer Fisher jewelry, and Lorraine Schwartz
Jessica Stam in a Giulietta jumpsuit and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry
Marion Cotillard in Dior
