Preserving Cherished Moments – Amaire & Co.

In an industry where capturing fleeting moments becomes timeless art, Yuki Dam stands apart with her distinctive approach to photography.

As the founder of Amaire & Co., Yuki Dam has crafted a brand that embodies Japanese principles of simplicity and authenticity while delivering a bright, airy aesthetic that transforms ordinary moments into extraordinary memories. Her journey from corporate professional to acclaimed photographer is as inspiring as the images she creates, marked by courage, vision, and unwavering dedication to her craft. In this intimate Q&A, Yuki opens up about her creative philosophy, personal journey, and the vision behind her growing brand.

Rooted in Japanese Simplicity

– Can you share how the Japanese principles of simplicity and authenticity have shaped Amaire & Co.’s unique style and vision?
Japanese culture embodies principles that resonate deeply with my core values, profoundly influencing my artistic style. One concept that inspires me is Komorebi (木漏れ日), the poetic expression for ‘sunlight filtering through the trees.’ As a photographer, I find these glimmers of light and sparks of imagination symbolic of the moments I aim to illuminate through my work.

Rooted in Japanese philosophy, I draw inspiration from the profound gratitude for life’s imperfections, the beauty of simplicity, and the elegance of small, meaningful moments. My goal is to create an experience that is graceful, heartfelt, and a celebration of the unique beauty in every fleeting yet cherished memory I am honored to capture.

From Corporate Desk to Creative Freedom

– What inspired you to transition from photography as a side passion to a full-time career in 2021?
During the height of COVID-19, I found myself working full-time in a corporate role, confined to a desk day after day. The weight of stress and dissatisfaction with my career took a significant toll, and at just 25, I was already grappling with numerous health challenges. Around this time, I was newly engaged, and it was my fiancé (now husband) who became my unwavering source of support. His belief in me gave me the courage to leave my job, embrace photography as my full-time passion, and focus on healing both my body and spirit.

– How did your partnership with your husband, James, influence the creative direction and dynamic of Amaire & Co.?
This partnership has been an incredible blessing in my life. Having a husband who not only understands photography but is also a creative force in his own right fills me with inspiration and pride. Together, we form a dynamic team. At large events and weddings, he often takes on the role of second photographer, using his artistic eye to capture unconventional, imaginative angles. Meanwhile, I focus on delivering the essential, timeless shots that ensure our clients have the classic images they cherish. This synergy allows us to provide a perfect balance: a collection of photographs that are both beautifully artistic and enduringly elegant.

– The name “Amaire & Co.” stands out as distinctive and luxurious. Can you tell us more about its origin and what it represents to you?
When brainstorming a name for my brand, I knew I didn’t want to use my own name. Many photographers opt for their name followed by “Photography,” but I wanted something that stood apart—something distinct and memorable. I also wanted to avoid overly familiar or predictable language. I envisioned a name with the same unique allure as brands like ARITZIA—a name that instantly evokes sophistication and style.

After experimenting with different sounds and letter combinations, I landed on Amaire & Co. The name resonated with me; it felt luxurious, elegant, and timeless. I fell in love not just with the way it sounded, but with the way the letters came together visually. One of my favorite aspects of the name is its openness—there’s no single ‘correct’ way to pronounce it, which adds an element of individuality. This reflects our philosophy: each person’s experience with us is unique, and our aim is to create moments that are truly their own.

Simple yet beautiful, Amaire & Co. embodies everything I wanted in a brand. I am incredibly proud of it and hold it close to my heart.

Crafting Meaningful Experiences

– How do you balance timeless elegance with capturing candid, whimsical moments in your photography?
When clients choose to work with me, my role extends far beyond simply showing up on the day of the event to document it as it unfolds. I take a hands-on approach, offering guidance and support well before the big day to ensure I have the time and insight needed to craft and capture the most meaningful moments. While I understand the temptation to pack as much as possible into a single day, this often hinders the ability to capture the relaxed, candid, and creative moments that make photographs truly special.

By the time the wedding day arrives, I’m fully prepared to lead both my team and my clients with confidence. I encourage my clients to pause, to laugh with and embrace their loved ones, and to savor the beauty of their celebration. My goal is to ease any stress they might feel so they can truly enjoy their day. This relaxed atmosphere allows us to capture genuine laughter, heartfelt moments, and portraits that radiate timeless elegance.

Every step of the way, I’m here to support my clients, creating an environment where their love story can unfold naturally—resulting in a collection of photographs that reflect the joy, intimacy, and beauty of their day.

Creative Evolution and Style

– What have been some of your most memorable projects or shoots, and how did they shape your approach to storytelling?
My very first styled shoot, which I organized entirely on my own, holds an incredibly special place in my heart. I was fortunate enough to collaborate with my dream vendors—everything from the breathtaking venue and stunning florals to the exquisite cake and even the honor of working with Paris Jewellers. It felt like a dream come true.

To my amazement, this shoot went on to be featured in numerous esteemed publications, including British VOGUE, TATLER, and beloved local outlets. Although I was filled with nerves on the day, I couldn’t be prouder of what we accomplished. The team brought the vision to life with such artistry and grace, and I am endlessly grateful for that experience. It was not only a milestone in my journey but also a beautiful testament to the power of collaboration and creativity.

– Your work reflects a “bright and airy aesthetic.” What draws you to this style, and how do you ensure it remains timeless?
My photography style is rooted in true-to-color tones, characterized by bright, airy compositions that evoke a sense of whimsy. When I first began exploring various artistic approaches, I fell in love with the enchanting quality of this style—it transforms every image into something truly captivating. It allows me to preserve the authenticity of the day while elevating it to a refined, elegant form. I strive to maintain every intricate detail in my images, blending this ethereal aesthetic with a timeless appeal that ensures each photograph remains as beautiful years from now as it is today.

– What challenges did you face in building Amaire & Co., and how did those experiences shape the brand’s evolution?
The greatest challenge I faced in building my business came at the very beginning, when I was starting entirely from scratch. I was, in many ways, meek and insecure, often working for free simply to establish my name. While I can now see how every effort was worth it, at the time, the journey felt incredibly difficult. Each time I raised my prices, I was gripped by fear, worried that no one would book with me.

The process demanded immense mental and spiritual growth. Overcoming those doubts and fears was one of the hardest yet most transformative experiences of my life. Those early struggles shaped not only my brand but also me as a person. Today, I can look back and see how beautifully the business has blossomed because of those hurdles. They deepened my empathy for my clients, strengthened my faith in myself, and instilled a profound sense of gratitude.

The difficulties in my journey taught me humility and provided invaluable wisdom. As a result, my brand is now more refined and aligned with my vision for the future, carrying a clarity and confidence that reflects the growth I’ve achieved.

Telling Unique Love Stories

– How do you approach capturing the individuality of each couple’s love story through your lens?
I encourage couples to embrace what they love most during their engagement sessions, crafting an experience that feels authentically ‘them.’ To truly capture their essence, I take the time to learn their story—how they met, the proposal, and the little things they love about each other. Each session becomes unique, reflecting the activities and moments that define their relationship.

During the shoot, I guide them to interact naturally, immersing themselves in their own world while I document the raw emotions and genuine connections that unfold. To ease any nerves and make the experience more enjoyable, I often share a bit of my own playful side, cracking jokes and creating a lighthearted atmosphere. I also take time to explain my vision, and sometimes I’ll show them previews of the shots to share my excitement, which helps them feel at ease and more confident.

My goal is always to create an environment where couples can fully relax and enjoy the moment, resulting in images that are as heartfelt and joyful as their love story.

– Your portfolio spans weddings, events, and lifestyle photography. How do you adapt your approach to different types of shoots?
Each type of photography brings its own unique dynamics. For more intimate sessions, such as those with couples or families, I focus on guiding them through poses, setting expectations, and tailoring the experience to their individual personalities and interactions.

For families with young children, this often means using extra props or planning engaging activities to keep the session enjoyable and stress-free. I prioritize candid moments and fun interactions, while seamlessly incorporating a few formal shots to provide a well-rounded collection of images—without the pressure of ensuring every child is perfectly posed the entire time.

For weddings and events, I prepare by familiarizing myself with the schedule and flow of the day, ensuring I’m ready to capture every meaningful moment as it unfolds. Over time, I’ve developed a natural rhythm for managing various types of sessions, which keeps my work both efficient and adaptable.

The variety of sessions I photograph throughout the year—from families to couples to large events—keeps my work fresh and exciting, ensuring that each day brings new opportunities to create something truly special.

Creative Collaboration and Artistry

– As a film enthusiast, how has James’s background with film photography influenced the artistry of Amaire & Co.?

As a film enthusiast, James views the world through a unique lens. Film photography, with its slower process and higher risk of unpredictability—due to environmental factors, settings, or other variables—presents a different kind of challenge. Yet, it is precisely this element of uncertainty that adds to the thrill, as the anticipation of discovering the final images creates a sense of excitement and nostalgia. The distinct quality and timeless nature of film provide a fresh perspective, enhancing the more creative aspects of Amaire & Co. and adding depth to our work.

– What role does collaboration play in your creative process, both with your clients and with James?
Collaboration with clients is crucial to ensure we can perform at our best and that they have the most enjoyable experience possible. To facilitate this, I provide guidance on outfits and color schemes, which help create timeless, aesthetically pleasing images that align with our signature style. The client’s efforts are integral, as our ability to produce truly beautiful images depends on the textures, colors, and overall harmony of the environment and subjects, all of which must complement the style we aim to capture.

Equally important is my collaboration with James, ensuring our roles are clearly defined and that every aspect of the shoot is covered. Over time, we’ve developed a natural rhythm, which makes our teamwork seamless and efficient. With this mutual understanding, we can focus on capturing every moment without overlap, allowing us to create stunning results together.

– How do you ensure that every client feels like the “main character” in their story when working with you?

It may sound amusing, but recently I’ve developed a habit of yelling excitedly whenever I capture a beautiful shot. I also find myself acting out poses to guide my clients, offering words of affirmation and encouragement throughout the session to keep the energy high and help them feel confident.

– Can you share a moment where a seemingly simple scene turned into one of your favourite shots?
I believe this all comes down to the power of lighting. Recently, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of how to truly see and harness light, and this simple skill has transformed even the most ordinary moments into something extraordinary and glamorous. Mastering the interplay of light and shadows and positioning my subjects within this dynamic environment even with a simpler background, has made a remarkable difference in the quality of my work. When I share these images with my clients, they often find these moments to be the ones they love most.

Global Inspiration and Professional Growth

– How has traveling for global shoots enriched your perspective as a photographer and storyteller?
Traveling holds a special place in my heart, as it allows me to immerse myself in diverse cultures, meet fascinating people, and explore breathtaking places, each offering its own unique beauty. Through my journeys, I’ve had the privilege of observing photographers from various countries and learning how they approach their craft. This has profoundly influenced my own artistry, especially in how I perceive and work with light and shadows. Travel has not only broadened my personal perspective; it has also enriched my photography, expanding my skills, and inspiring my vision in ways I never could have anticipated.

– What advice would you give to someone looking to pursue photography full-time while maintaining a distinctive style?
If there’s one thing I’ve learned through this journey, it’s the importance of simply taking the leap. Fear often holds us back from pursuing our boldest dreams, and the hardest part is usually that first step forward. Once you overcome that initial hurdle, everything else seems to fall into place much more easily. Don’t let fear stand in the way of the life you envision for yourself. If you already know the style you love, dive into it, learn it, and practice. And if you’re still uncertain, that’s completely okay! As photographers, our style evolves as we grow and learn. You don’t need to be perfect from the start; often it’s through the act of beginning that we embark on a path of learning and improvement. So, don’t be afraid to take that first step.

Wedding rings

– As a team, how do you and James balance the artistic and business sides of running Amaire & Co.?
Amaire & Co. is largely my own, and James is often there to support me as a second photographer for larger events when needed.

– What’s the most rewarding aspect of preserving love stories and authentic moments through photography?
It is truly an honor to preserve what is often one of the most significant days of a person’s life. As time passes and loved ones are no longer with us, photographs become the enduring connection to those moments and memories. This profound responsibility makes capturing these moments even more powerful, as I may be preserving memories that future generations will cherish when they look back on their family history. Photographs freeze time, offering a way to revisit moments we can never physically return to, yet can always reflect upon. This, to me, is the truly magical aspect of what I do.

Amaire & Co. and the Art of Capturing Life’s Most Precious Moments

Amaire & Co. is a photography brand rooted in Japanese principles of simplicity, authenticity, and gratitude. Founded by Yuki Dam, the brand draws deeply from the concept of Komorebi, the beauty of sunlight filtering through trees, as a guiding philosophy for how light and fleeting moments are captured. Every session is approached with intention and warmth, ensuring clients feel genuinely seen and celebrated. The result is a signature bright, airy aesthetic that elevates ordinary moments into images of enduring elegance, crafted with the same care and precision that defines every aspect of this thoughtfully built brand.

From a Leap of Faith to a Legacy of Love

What began as courage during uncertain times has grown into one of the most distinctive photography businesses in the industry. Yuki left a demanding corporate career in 2021 to build Amaire & Co. alongside her husband James, whose film photography background adds creative depth to every project. Together they serve couples, families, and milestone events with a seamless and artful approach. With dreams of capturing luxury weddings in Paris, Lake Como, and Bali on the horizon, Amaire & Co. continues to grow into a global brand built entirely on love, vision, and the belief that every story deserves to be beautifully preserved.

Looking to the Future

– Where do you see Amaire & Co. in five years, and what legacy do you hope to leave in the world of wedding and lifestyle photography?
I envision Amaire & Co. expanding onto the global stage, capturing luxury weddings in some of the most iconic locations—whether it’s photographing the romance of Paris, the elegance of Lake Como, Italy, or the grandeur of weddings in Bali, Indonesia, and beyond. I dream of building a team that aligns with my vision, expanding the “Co.” in Amaire & Co. beyond just my husband and me. Ultimately, my goal is for Amaire & Co. to grow into a company that facilitates positive change in the world. The legacy I hope to leave in this industry is simple: love. I want everyone who works with me to feel loved, to see love, to be loved, and to share love. Above all, I want to contribute to a world that could certainly use more of it.
