My journey into painting skies was quite unexpected. After spending two decades exploring various artistic mediums, from photography to sculpture, I found myself drawn back to observational drawing. It wasn’t until my husband asked for a sky mural for his model airplanes that I rediscovered my passion for painting. Despite not having painted significantly in 20 years, I took on the challenge, and that mural marked the beginning of my sky painting journey.

This experience taught me a valuable lesson: sometimes our best work comes when we least expect it, urging us to remain open to new opportunities and embrace them with enthusiasm.

You mentioned the sky as a source of abundance and spirituality. Could you share a specific moment or experience where the sky deeply resonated with you and influenced your artwork?

My artistic journey has always been intertwined with personal growth. Prior to painting skies, I was creating realistic drawings of hibernating animals, symbolising the importance of self-care and healing, particularly as a mother of four young children. However, it was when I painted my first sky mural that everything changed.

The vastness of the sky opened my eyes to the boundless opportunities and peace it offered. It sparked a desire within me to explore endless horizons and embrace a sense of infinite potential. Since then, painting skies has become my primary focus, allowing me to channel tranquility and freedom onto canvas.

Your sky paintings often evoke a sense of calm and tranquility. How do you translate such complex emotions onto canvas, and what techniques do you employ to convey these feelings?

Painting skies offers a unique opportunity to tap into the collective positive associations people have with the sky. My main technique involves creating hyper-realistic scenes that invite viewers to immerse themselves in the artwork, as if stepping into the vast expanse above.

Moreover, I strive to maintain a balance between realism and fluidity in my paintings, ensuring they capture the essence of relaxation and flow. This delicate equilibrium breathes life into the artwork, fostering a sense of peace and serenity.

One fascinating aspect of the atmosphere is the condensation point where clouds form—a phenomenon reminiscent of meditation. Just as clouds emerge from the condensation of water vapour, meditation allows the mind to gradually empty until reaching a state of peaceful bliss.

Furthermore, the towering cumulus clouds serve as a metaphor for personal momentum and growth. Much like reaching new heights in one’s endeavours, these clouds ascend with momentum and vitality, symbolising the beauty of progress and achievement.

From photography to sculpture to painting, you’ve explored various mediums throughout your artistic career. What draws you specifically to painting as a means of expression?

Painting offers a tactile and immersive experience that resonates deeply with the ethereal qualities of skies and water. It allows me to play with colour and lightness, capturing the essence of these elements in a tangible form.

Moreover, painting aligns seamlessly with my lifestyle, providing flexibility and autonomy in my creative process. Unlike photography, which is often dictated by external factors like weather and location, painting empowers me to create within the comforts of my home studio, at my own pace.

My ultimate goal is to instil a sense of peace and empowerment in viewers, encouraging them to embrace their own potential and create a life filled with joy and fulfilment. Can you walk us through your creative process when starting a new sky painting? How do you approach the blank canvas and decide on the mood and atmosphere you want to capture?

My creative process begins with intuition and emotion. I often have a collection of potential images in mind, and one will inevitably resonate with me more deeply than the others. From there, I allow the painting to unfold organically, gradually revealing its meaning and mood as I work.

This intuitive approach enables me to infuse each painting with authenticity and depth, as the emotions I experience during the process become intertwined with the artwork itself.

What role does meditation play in your artistic practice, and how does it influence the energy you infuse into your paintings?

One destination that has always captured my imagination is the Uyuni salt flats in Bolivia. What’s your go-to quote when you are lacking motivation?

My go-to quote when I’m lacking motivation is simply “Allow.” By reminding myself to let go of resistance and embrace the flow of creativity and inspiration, I’m able to cultivate a sense of ease and receptivity that ignites my passion and reignites my motivation.

1. Tell us about the journey that led you to becoming a full-time artist…

My background is actually in Business Administration and Behavioral Economics; I’m what you could say, a numeric person. However, 24 years ago, I decided to pursue my actual passion: Art.

It all started with short courses until I joined Severine Fain’s Art Academy in Amsterdam, where I discovered my love for oil and acrylic, using them to share my stories on canvases.

The first exhibitions I did were collective and solo auctions to benefit various causes such as Habitat for Humanity projects, Japan’s Disaster Relief, and Latin American NGOs focused on helping children and single mothers. My art has a voice, and it was actually helping to support many causes that I feel strongly about.

In Basel, Switzerland, I had the chance to open my own art academy for children and adults, which was probably the biggest leap of faith I took toward becoming a full-time artist.

Life took me to live in Dubai for a few years, and it was there where my artist career experienced exponential growth. Soon enough, I was featured in renowned magazines, museums, biennials, ministries of culture, art fairs, books, and all sorts of huge international events.

All of a sudden, and without planning it, blessings kept knocking at my door, including ventures like getting into NFTs. My art has diversified, and along with it, the exposure and reach of my stories.

2. Where did your love and interest in art come from?

I have always loved visiting museums and spending more than the normal amount of time on some artworks, examining the strokes of the brushes and the tiny details that mostly escape regular eyes.

I love color, lots of vibrant colors. And I have always been curious about the lives of famous artists and what inspired them when they were creating their artworks. If I don’t know the story, I imagine what it could be.

3. How do you want people to feel when they see your work?

I have heard many things, but most of those who own one of my pieces say they do so because they feel identified with the emotion. They may have gone through a similar story, or they want to voice a desire.

4. For anyone interested in becoming a full-time artist, what advice would you offer them?

I would tell them that it is definitely not easy, and sometimes it can be discouraging, but the satisfaction you get from making it on your own is priceless. Continue submitting your work to open calls, check out fairs, and participate in collectives as much as you can. Eventually, the breakthrough will come, and you will savor it when you least expect it.

5. Talk us through an average day in your life…

I really enjoy waking up before the rest of my household and having a few hours to myself with my brush and canvas. Aside from cooking/eating breaks, I try to maintain the discipline of working between my laptop and studio for at least 8 to 10 hours a day. If I’m not traveling to an exhibition, that’s how it goes. Sometimes, I engage in photography, digital art, physical art, and pottery all in a single day, along with handling applications, answering an infinite amount of emails, and by the end of it, I’m exhausted but satisfied.

6. What do you do when you are lacking creativity?

Every now and then, I do experience creative blocks. My way of dealing with them is to completely change the channel and read an appealing book. I love reading. By the end of it, not only have I learned something new, but the feeling to return to my paint is back.

My creativity is greatly affected by the stress of deadlines. But with an interesting book at hand, especially one focused on self-improvement, the chances of reducing stress are significant.

7. How much has social media played a role in the success of your brand?

Social media has played a significant role; most of the events and networking take place between Instagram and Facebook.

8. Our readers love to travel, what destinations are on your must-visit list?

I love traveling, and I do have a bucket list! Haha. My top five future destinations would be Japan, Vietnam, Chile, Brazil, and Argentina.

9. What does self-care mean to you?

Self-care means taking care of yourself before taking care of everyone else. It means loving yourself as you would love the love of your life, cheering for yourself when you reach a goal, and being sympathetic to yourself when things don’t go as expected. It means never stopping learning how to improve your relationship with yourself.

Can you tell us about the moment when you discovered your passion for painting and how it transformed from a chance encounter into a central part of your life?

It was an afternoon in 2010 when I found myself torn between going for a run or trying my hand at painting. Despite never having painted before, I had been intrigued by the idea of buying a canvas in the preceding days, yet hadn’t made the purchase. As I hesitated, my mother unearthed an old blank canvas, once belonging to my sister from her art school days. That day, I decided to paint, using the aged colors also belonging to my sister, now hardened and in need of thinning. Since then, driven by a compelling impulse, the need to paint has become a constant in my life. I’ve created over 250 paintings since that moment.

Your journey from studying Physics to becoming a self-taught painter is quite remarkable. How do you feel your scientific background influences your artistic process, if at all?

According to Leonardo da Vinci, “Art is science; it cannot be improvised and is not satisfied with indifferent and superficial approximations; on the contrary, it requires hard and systematic work.” I believe the scientific method has significantly influenced my approach to painting, particularly in the experimental phase of my early work. Subsequently, I’ve integrated acquired painting methodologies and techniques based on experiential learning. Just as in science, having a method has been fundamental to my artistic process, often involving unconventional tools such as DIY implements.

Your early works seem to explore themes of the infinite and depth. Could you delve into how these concepts emerged in your art and how they’ve evolved over time?

Themes of infinity and depth emerged spontaneously in my early works, such as “Opening” from 2012, where the concept of infinity is associated with depth. In other pieces like “T1” or “Lux Libera Nos,” infinity is depicted through repeated similar signs within the composition. Initially unplanned, the theme of infinity has evolved over time, transitioning into themes of movement in my recent oil paintings, characterized by geometrically unbounded motions as seen in “Tumulto.”

What role does spontaneity play in your creative process, particularly in your approach to action painting?

Identifying as an Action Painter, spontaneity is pivotal in my creative process. Almost all my paintings are gestural and spontaneous, often driven by the composition itself. This is particularly evident in my oil paintings, where canvases are laid horizontally and worked on from various angles. The application of color, often done with unconventional tools like spatulas, emphasizes movement and gesture. In this regard, my practice of traditional martial arts has also played a significant role.

The quote you’ve chosen from Khalil Gibran speaks to humility and the acceptance of ignorance. How does this philosophy resonate with you as an artist?

“I am ignorant of absolute truth. But I am humble before my ignorance and there lies my honor and my reward.” This quote resonates deeply with me as it underscores the humility required in both artistic and scientific pursuits. It acknowledges the relative nature of talent and the importance of continuous learning and growth. Embracing this philosophy allows artists to remain open to new possibilities and perpetually strive for improvement.

How do you balance instinct and deliberation in your artistic decisions, especially considering your transition from acrylics to mainly using oil paints?

Oil paints afford greater flexibility in reflection and adjustment compared to acrylics, which dry faster. Consequently, acrylic painting demands a more instinctive and swift approach, while oil painting allows for a more deliberate and thoughtful process. My transition from acrylics to oils has thus led to a shift towards more considered compositions, reflecting a balance between instinctive gestures and intentional decision-making.

As a self-taught artist, what challenges have you faced along your journey, and how have they shaped your artistic practice?

Being self-taught has allowed me to cultivate a unique perspective, less constrained by conventional artistic norms. However, it initially posed challenges in establishing authority within the art community and gaining recognition from traditional galleries. Instead, I’ve leveraged online platforms like Artfinder and Singulart to showcase my work. This journey has taught me to value originality and embrace diverse influences, shaping my practice into one that prioritizes personal expression over adherence to artistic conventions.

Your work seems to bridge the gap between chaos and order, with gestural movements meeting geometric themes. Can you discuss how you find harmony within this duality?

Chaos, often central to my paintings, should not be perceived negatively but rather as a dynamic force guided by underlying principles. While my compositions may appear chaotic, they are governed by intentional rules and harmonies developed over time. My expertise in color application allows me to create compositions that balance spontaneity with structure, evolving from geometrically precise forms to more fluid and dynamic arrangements.

Your art reflects a deep introspection and exploration of the self. What insights or revelations have you gained about yourself through your artistic endeavors?

Discovering my passion for painting later in life has been a revelation in itself, highlighting the unpredictability of personal discovery. Painting has provided me with a profound sense of satisfaction and fulfillment, offering a parallel avenue for creative expression alongside my scientific pursuits. Through this journey, I’ve come to appreciate the joy of creation and the inherent beauty of the artistic process.

How do you approach the concept of perfection in your art, especially considering the spontaneous nature of action painting?

Perfection, for me, is reached when I find myself satisfied with a painting, recognizing its inherent value and resonance. It’s not about achieving flawless execution but rather capturing a moment of creative fulfillment and resonance. Embracing the spontaneous nature of action painting allows me to appreciate imperfections as integral components of the artistic journey, each contributing to the unique character of the final piece.

Your paintings often seem to invite viewers to interpret and explore their own meanings. What do you hope audiences take away from experiencing your work?

I aim to provide viewers with a means of escape and introspection through my paintings, inviting them to immerse themselves in a world of color and movement. By offering space for personal interpretation, I hope to evoke emotions and spark contemplation, enabling viewers to find resonance and meaning within their own experiences.

How do you stay inspired and motivated, especially during periods of artistic block or self-doubt?

Fortunately, I haven’t experienced significant periods of artistic block or doubt. However, I find inspiration in classical music, particularly piano compositions by artists like Philip Glass, whose work resonates deeply with me. Additionally, immersing myself in nature and continuing my practice of traditional Japanese martial arts provides avenues for rejuvenation and creative inspiration.

Your use of colour is both vibrant and nuanced. Could you share your thoughts on colour theory and its role in your compositions?

While I may not adhere to traditional color theory principles, I gravitate towards overlapping and blending colors in my oil paintings. Although my approach to color may be intuitive, there is a discernible method underlying my compositions, guided by years of experimentation and refinement. While I may not consciously adhere to established color theories, my compositions are nonetheless characterized by vibrant palettes and nuanced interplays of color and light.

What advice would you give to aspiring artists who are also embarking on a journey of self-discovery through their craft?

I would encourage aspiring artists to paint prolifically, embracing the journey of self-discovery and creative exploration. It’s essential not to be deterred by criticism but instead to view it as an opportunity for growth and refinement. Ultimately, the goal should be to derive joy and fulfilment from the act of painting itself, allowing passion and curiosity to guide the artistic journey.

Looking ahead, what are your aspirations and goals as an artist, and how do you see your work evolving in the future?

As an artist, my primary aspiration is to continue creating from a place of internal necessity, unconstrained by external expectations or ambitions for fame or success. While I hope to share my art with a broader audience, my focus remains on the intrinsic value of the creative process itself. Moving forward, I anticipate further exploration and evolution in my work, driven by an ongoing commitment to experimentation and personal growth.

Milly, your collection “Intimacy” explores the complexities of the concept. How do you translate such a deeply personal theme into your artwork, and what messages do you hope viewers take away from it?

Honestly, translating something as deep and personal onto a canvas and sharing it with the world was challenging. I drew inspiration from my personal experiences in understanding the meaning of intimacy and our generation’s struggle with craving it while grappling with how to attain it. I hope viewers take away the importance of allowing oneself to fall in love and embrace emotional vulnerability. Our generation often fears intimacy due to a desire for independence, but this collection urges understanding that both can coexist.

Inspirations Behind “Naked Mind”

“Naked Mind” delves into unfiltered thoughts and emotions. What personal experiences or reflections inspired you to create this piece, and how do you navigate the fine line between vulnerability and artistic expression?

Being an overthinker, “Naked Mind” portrays my interpretation of thoughts devoid of overthinking, fear of judgment, and insecurities. I aim to capture the intimacy of the mind in human connections, emphasizing the courage it takes to accept and reveal one’s dark thoughts. Vulnerability is inseparable from artistic expression; it is the essence that distinguishes impactful art from the ordinary.

Physical Intimacy in “Innocent Embrace”: “She said nothing with her voice and everything with her touch” – this quote from “Innocent Embrace” is powerful. How do you believe physical touch contributes to genuine intimacy, and what societal misconceptions about physical intimacy were you aiming to challenge through this piece?

This piece aims to emphasise how physical touch can evoke a sense of innocence and purity. In today’s society, there’s a misconception that physical intimacy is solely about sex. “Innocent Embrace” challenges this notion, highlighting that simple acts like being embraced in a loved one’s arms create a deeper connection, countering the fear of emotional intimacy after sex.

Perspective in “Fleeting Devotion”: Your “Fleeting Devotion” series explores the concept of looking through a rose-colored lens. Can you share more about the inspiration behind this series and your perspective on the balance between idealized moments and the reality of human connections?

“Fleeting Devotion” captures the depth of falling for someone and the struggle to accept their flaws. The series questions whether the decision to embrace imperfections or let go turns moments into fleeting devotion. It explores the dichotomy between idealised love and the reality of human connections, portraying the tension between acceptance and letting go.

“Love isn’t always enough” is a thought-provoking message from “Unconscious Resistance.” What motivated you to portray the struggle between the mind and heart, and how do you see this internal conflict impacting our pursuit of true intimacy?

“Unconscious Resistance” portrays the internal struggle when love isn’t enough to sustain a relationship. The piece explores the conflict between the mind urging detachment and the heart clinging to love. This universal struggle influences the pursuit of true intimacy, emphasising the need to reconcile the emotional and rational aspects of love.

Your take on the concept of “love is blind” in “Willfully Blinded” is intriguing. How do you depict blind trust in your artwork, and what do you believe is the role of trust and vulnerability in building a strong, intimate connection?

“Willfully Blinded” depicts blind trust as an emotional trust fall, where one lets go and allows someone to guide them. Trust and vulnerability are foundational in building strong connections. Without blind trust, relationships can become toxic. The piece emphasizes that deep trust takes time, preventing accusations, arguments, and fostering stability in intimate connections.

“In the beginning of any relationship, we’re hiding what we find ugly or dark.” How does “Sightless Vulnerability” capture the challenges of being open and vulnerable in relationships, and what advice do you have for navigating the fear of judgment in exposing our true selves?

Don’t rush yourself. That is my biggest piece of advice to anyone scared to open up and be vulnerable in any type of relationship, whether it be friendly or romantic. I know for me, my friends have had quite an experience trying to get to know me, never quite feeling like they can reach me… an enigma is the word one has used before.

So this fear of being vulnerable, of being judged, or leaving makes it easy to let that consume us and that’s why I created Sightless Vulnerability to confront my fear and try to let this aspect of myself go. Sometimes the dark or ugly side is actually what humanises us and creates the intimate emotional bond we crave.

Your love for the Asian folklore, The Red String of Fate, is evident in “Threaded Fate.” How has this childhood story influenced your perception of love, and how do you infuse its essence into your artistic representation?

I think it has impacted the way I view love significantly. I am the type of girl who does not fall easily but when I do I give it everything. I do believe in fate, soulmates and finding my person, and to some that may sound childish but what can I say, I’m a hopeless romantic deep down inside. I do believe that when I am lucky enough to meet my person, I’ll know, and even if we can’t be together or we grow apart if they really are my soulmate, we will find our way back to each other.

And if we don’t it just means the right guy is out there and I can’t wait to meet him. I created this piece to represent how it takes two people to choose each other and how this string connects us to those meant to be in our lives no matter what. This is an homage to my favourite childhood story because I miss when falling in love seemed as simple as fitting into a glass slipper.

Can you walk us through your creative process, from the initial concept to the finished artwork? How do you ensure that your personal experiences and emotions are authentically reflected in each piece?

I truly am an emotional artist as I create from…well my emotions. That being said I do not really plan my pieces as they are more spontaneous and created in the moment of my emotions from my experiences. I know this because when trying to create some commission pieces I found it extremely difficult to do so because people I believe love my work because I like to think they can feel something when looking at it. I can’t fake emotions nor am I willing to just make a sale.

You work across various mediums, from canvas painting to digital art. How does your choice of medium influence the way you convey the nuances of intimacy, and do you find certain mediums better suited for expressing specific emotions?

I do think choosing to make this a digital painting collection was the right choice to convey my messages of intimacy. Because I drew inspiration from statues and stained glass, line was a huge part of the pieces and images themselves. Had I painted these, they would have been much less uniform and more organic which would’ve evoked a completely different feeling, especially because my style of acrylic painting vs digital painting are significantly different.

When someone experiences your art, what emotional or intellectual impact do you hope it has on them? How do you navigate the fine line between conveying personal experiences and creating a piece that resonates universally?

With this collection in particular, I hope when my viewers experience my work they feel understood or a sense of being able to relate to emotions they may not have even thought they had. I want my audience to question themselves, reflect and feel.

I don’t think there will ever be a piece of art that everyone on this planet can relate to, therefore I think it’s my job as an artist to express my story or message in the best way I know how, and accepting its okay that not everyone will enjoy, appreciate or even understand it but to also remember there will be people who will.

How have your artistic style and approach evolved since your first collection, “Intimacy”? In what ways do you see your art growing and changing in the future?

I think Intimacy was the first “big girl” collection outside of school I have created as my work prior was a bit more whimsical and definitely more niche. My art has matured significantly as I started creating with purpose rather than just for another grade. I see my art changing as I evolve and grow as an individual, and as I have said before I create from my experiences and emotions.

Collaborations and Future Projects: Are there any collaborations or future projects that you’re excited about? How do you see your art evolving, and are there new themes or concepts you’re eager to explore?

I am excited to talk about a food and fashion publication, NABI Magazine, I have started here in NYC that really incorporates a new style of art I have been creating for the brand. My inspiration comes from my childhood love for old animations such as “Aristocats” and “101 Dalmatians” creating a more sketch-like illustration that feels nostalgic for my generation.

Impact of New York City: Being based in New York City, a hub of art and culture, how has the city influenced your artistic journey and the themes you choose to explore in your work?

Living and studying in New York has allowed me to become more expressive and experimental with my art from medium choices to making sure I am creating with something to say. New York being one of the biggest art capitals of the world also has exposed me to so many different artists from historically famous to street art it really is a place of inspiration.

Advice for Emerging Artists: For aspiring artists who want to convey deep emotions and personal experiences through their art, what advice would you offer? How can they find their unique voice and create meaningful connections with their audience?

I have always wanted my art to make my viewer feel something but how can I even do that if I am not even sure what I am trying to say. This was the biggest lesson and push I needed to go from art student to artist. Go out and try to experience everything because without life experience your art can easily fall flat. So as cliche as it sounds go fall in love, get on the wrong train or just step out of your comfort zone once and while and I promise you, your art will come to life!

Balancing Personal and Artistic Identity: Your art delves into personal and intimate themes. How do you balance the line between sharing your personal experiences through art and maintaining a sense of privacy and personal identity?

I really do not think there is ever an exact balance when creating art that is centered around such vulnerable emotions. I think the more vulnerable you are with the process and ultimately the creation of your work the more you will get your audience to feel.

If you hold yourself back by fear, it shows in your work. Privacy and personal identity are all things to keep in mind when explaining your work or writing about it but when creating let yourself feel everything and anything and that is what makes a piece go from good to extraordinary.

Reflection on Past Works: Looking back at your earlier collections, is there a particular piece that holds a special place in your heart or one that represents a pivotal moment in your artistic journey? What memories or emotions does it evoke?

Yes, there is one painting, part of a group art show, that I could have sold for $10,000, but I refused, saying, “I’m not for sale.” Some may see it as a missed opportunity, but to me, it defined my artistic style at the time. It holds a special place as one of the first pieces that shaped my artistic identity, even though my friends might think I’m foolish for not taking the offer.

Legacy and Impact: As an artist, what legacy do you hope to leave behind, and how do you envision your art contributing to conversations about intimacy, vulnerability, and human connection in the broader artistic landscape?

I hope to contribute to normalizing intimacy and vulnerability in both art and society. Through my work, I aim to open conversations that resonate with people’s emotions and experiences, fostering a deeper understanding of the human connection.

I would love to go to Asia and tour around my motherland, Korea, but also stop by Japan and Thailand!

What’s your go-to quote when lacking motivation?

I don’t have a go-to quote, but with a little help from tequila, I always end up finding some motivation and inspiration for my next pieces.

Your art explores the interplay of forms and colours, often depicting connections and dissolutions. Could you share a specific piece where this concept is particularly poignant for you? What inspired it and what emotions were you aiming to convey?

Certainly. One painting that embodies the interplay of opposing colors and forms is “Turning.” The contrasting shades of pinks and blacks create a compelling tension. The pink forms seem to either shout at each other or passively orbit around, never touching. Layers beneath add a mysterious backdrop, hinting at containment or a struggle for liberation. I don’t approach my art with predefined meanings; instead, I begin with a color and let the forms guide me. This layering process allows multiple interpretations to surface, inviting viewers to find their own meanings.

Your choice of working spaces, from a sun porch to a dining room table, is fascinating. How does the environment you work in influence your creative process? Are there specific spaces that have significantly impacted your work?

My choice of workspace has been shaped by practical considerations such as time, budget, and available room. Traveling extensively led me to give up a separate studio, pushing me to work in whatever space was unoccupied during renovations. Later, as a parent, I shifted to small watercolors on the dining table, leading to a new artistic direction. Working on a smaller scale allowed me to invest more time in each piece, resulting in a slower yet more prolific creative process. Now, having a larger studio, I can explore a broader range of materials and sizes, adding depth to my work.

You mentioned using various supports and mediums. Can you describe an instance where experimenting with a new medium led to unexpected and inspiring results? How do these experiments contribute to your artistic growth?

Recently, I revisited a series created two decades ago, experimenting with diverse materials like paint, ink, glitter, and text on vellum and canvas paper.

When displayed as a large installation, these pieces took on new life. Incorporating text, such as song lyrics and thoughts, allowed me to convey personal experiences in a more open and authentic manner.

Additionally, the use of gold, in its various forms, added depth, symbolizing value. Such experiments not only enrich my artistic expression but also enable me to connect on a deeper level with my audience.

The idea of your art as stand-ins for human experiences is intriguing. Could you elaborate on how these ‘alienlike’ figures represent our existence? What message or story do you hope viewers perceive through these representations?

My abstract forms, often resembling alien figures, capture the sense of feeling out of place in specific situations. These shapes, free from specific race or gender, represent emotions like discomfort and disconnection. I have a series called “Hungry Ghosts,” embodying insatiable desires and helplessness.

These figures highlight societal issues, reflecting the struggles faced in today’s world. Through these shapes, I aim to evoke empathy, making viewers reflect on their own experiences of not fitting in.

Working on a small scale due to space constraints, you mentioned envisioning painting barn-sized artworks someday. Can you describe the vision you have for these large-scale pieces? How do you think working on such a grand scale would impact your creative expression?

I envision creating monumental works akin to Picasso’s Guernica or Anselm Kiefer’s masterpieces. These pieces would address political and social issues, demanding attention through their sheer size and intensity. Working on such a scale would allow me to use my entire body, employing ladders and abundant materials.

Some works might delve into dark, profound commentaries, while others could offer a comforting embrace. The scale would intensify my creative process, enabling me to explore vast themes with a heightened emotional impact.

Your affinity for modernism and abstract expression is evident. How do you balance traditional techniques with your innovative approach to creating art? Are there specific artists or movements that inspire your modernist exploration?

I draw inspiration from abstract expressionists like Motherwell, Kline, and Frankenthaler. Their mark-making techniques influence my work, as does the humour and commentary of Philip Guston.

Anselm Kiefer’s emotional layering and Georgia O’Keefe’s simplicity and authenticity resonate with me. While I incorporate elements from these masters, I infuse my unique style, often integrating humor, unconventional materials, and distinct mark-making.

By blending tradition with innovation, I strive to create a bridge between modernism and post-modernism, exploring diverse artistic possibilities.

The process of creating art is often as important as the final outcome. Can you share a memorable experience during your creative process where you felt completely immersed, transcending your ego and self? What did you learn from that moment?

During my MFA at Hunter College, I grappled with finding my artistic format. Reading Conversations Before the End of Time, a book on environmentalism and art, I felt abstract painting was inadequate to address pressing issues.

However, I rediscovered my love for abstract art, realizing its power to connect with people emotionally.

One significant moment was when I unknowingly wore mismatched shoes all day, absorbed in my work. Losing track of time and self in art is liberating, allowing me to access the core of my expression. This immersive experience taught me the importance of embracing my true passion and allowing creativity to flow organically.

The quotes you provided emphasise the transformative power of creative work. How do these words resonate with your own artistic journey? Have there been moments where you felt your art had a profound impact on others, or perhaps even transformed their perspectives?

Art transformed my life when I shifted my major from social work to art after being moved by a fellow student’s painting. Similarly, when viewers express how my art resonates with them, I find profound meaning in my work.

Witnessing others connect with my emotions and experiences reaffirms the transformative potential of art. My aim is to share my vulnerability and evoke genuine emotions, allowing viewers to see the world from a different perspective.

You mentioned seeing yourself within the canon of American painting. In what ways do you believe your work contributes to the evolution of this tradition? How do you envision your legacy within the context of American art?

If I were considered part of American painting, I hope my abstraction combines simplicity, emotional depth, and modern craft materials. I aim to straddle the line between modernism and post-modernism, integrating unconventional materials and unique display methods. My legacy, within American art, would ideally blend traditional techniques with innovative approaches, fostering a diverse dialogue within the artistic community.

The idea of art as a gift to the world is beautiful. Could you share a specific instance where you felt your art was a gift to others, eliciting a meaningful response or connection from your audience? How did that experience inspire your future work?

An impactful moment occurred in undergrad when a viewer connected deeply with a personal painting. This encounter inspired me to continue sharing my life openly through art.

The genuine connection between my art and its viewers motivates me to delve deeper into my emotions, believing that authenticity resonates universally. This experience fuels my desire to create art as a gift, fostering meaningful connections and enriching the lives of others.

The concept of navigating without a map resonates deeply with the creative process. Can you recall a moment when you faced uncertainty or creative block and how you overcame it? What advice would you give to emerging artists facing similar challenges?

I have experienced years-long creative blocks, learning not to be harsh on myself. Creativity takes diverse forms, whether in art or everyday life. Recognizing opportunities to express creativity, even beyond traditional art-making, is crucial. Personally, accepting my unique approach and intertwining it with social commentary freed my creativity. I trust my process, allowing myself to flow without rigid expectations. My advice is to embrace uncertainty, experiment freely, and explore various avenues of creative expression.

Your work often incorporates suggestions of landscapes. How does nature inspire your creations? Are there specific natural elements or scenes that consistently find their way into your art? What do these elements symbolize for you?

Nature, especially open skies and landscapes, deeply influences my work. Growing up in Nebraska, the horizon represents endless possibilities to me. Mountains, oceans, rivers, and rocks all find their way into my art, symbolising interconnectedness and shared existence.

Macroscopic views of moss, cells, or galaxies inspire me, showcasing nature’s diverse patterns. Abstraction allows these elements to coexist, emphasizing the relationship between forms and environments.

Your choice to work in multiples and on squares is intriguing. Is there a particular reason for this preference? How do these repetitive forms contribute to the overall narrative or aesthetic of your body of work?

I am drawn to the challenge of organizing designs within squares, and the 12” x 12” size resonates with my passion for record albums. It offers an intimate yet impactful canvas that can be both handheld and wall-mounted.

The grid structure, seemingly contrary to my flowing abstraction, acts as a container, exploring ideas of connection and boundaries. Repetition in my work signifies unity in diversity, bringing disparate thoughts together into a harmonious whole.

Artistic influences can come from various sources. Are there any non-artistic influences, such as literature, music, or personal experiences, which have significantly shaped your creative perspective? How do these influences manifest in your artwork?

Literature and music play pivotal roles in my life, finding expression in my art through incorporation of text. Song lyrics and lines from books serve as inspiration, adding layers of meaning to my work. While not directly illustrated, these influences provide a rich backdrop, allowing viewers to explore deeper connections and interpretations.

Your work is deeply rooted in the exploration of human connections. What message or feeling do you hope viewers take away from your art? In your opinion, how can art foster a sense of connection and understanding among diverse audiences?

I hope viewers find familiarity in my art, recognizing shared experiences and emotions. Art has the power to unite people, highlighting our common humanity beyond superficial differences.

By delving into the depths of emotion, my work seeks to evoke empathy and understanding, bridging gaps between diverse audiences. Through genuine emotions, art becomes a universal language, fostering connections that transcend barriers.

While I haven’t traveled extensively, destinations like Lake Como and Tuscany in Italy have always fascinated me. Additionally, London currently captures my imagination, especially after discovering the show Escape to the Country.

When lacking motivation, what destination is at the top of your bucket list?

When in need of inspiration, I yearn for the simplicity of nature. While I used to find solace in a Colorado cabin by the river, I now seek new escapes, such as drives in the prairie or any outdoor walk, to rejuvenate my creative spirit.
