In the face of overconsumption and mass consumerism, Kay Reed’s commitment to conservation is resolute. With the aim of using her art to change the world we live in, Kay’s mission is to use jewellery to turn every one of her customers into Conservation Ambassadors. Kay Reed also uses recycled gold, silver, and gemstones — which means that you can wear every piece of jewellery with pride, knowing that it didn’t have a negative impact on the environment.

We chat with Kay Reed and chat about the philosophy of her brand, and how it is inextricably linked to the environment. Every piece of jewellery features an endangered species, and so Kay Reed is slowly changing perceptions about conservation, one beautiful piece of jewellery at a time.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what inspired you to start Kay Reed?

I spent my childhood years searching for fossils, wildlife, and ‘pretty’ stones along the wild and windy beaches of the North east coast of England. Leaving there in the early 1990s to complete a degree in silversmithing at Birmingham City University.

I was inspired by an Antony Gormley interview that I saw. I can’t remember his exact words but he said that, as an artist, you change the world slightly by placing something in it that wasn’t there before. I thought, well I’m an artist, and if I could change the world I would make everyone aware of how important it is to support animal and habitat conservation. So I set about with my silversmithing to do just that.

Jewellery is such an emotive media to work with. When a beautiful piece is completed, it can spark a conversation; ‘It was a birthday gift’ or ‘it was bought at a little market on holiday’. I thought that I could use that conversation to create awareness for animal conservation, and to spread the word of the plight of our planet.

How important is sustainability and conservation to the ethos of your brand? Could you tell us more about your responsible production process?

My designs represent different endangered species safely encased in a circle of habitat, made from recycled gold, silver, and reclaimed gemstones. The packaging is from sustainable resources and each piece comes with an information card (made from recycled t-shirt rags) to encourage the wearer to talk about the plight of the endangered species in their piece, and how we can help. Not to mention, 10% of profits are donated to wildlife charities. Even my workshop was put together from reclaimed building salvage that destined for land fill. My work is about making jewellery, my jewellery is about my passion.

We are faced with so many problems concerning the planet and its survival that it sometimes seems like there is too much to do to fix it. Where do we start? We start by pulling in the same direction, spreading the word about the poaching, raising awareness on the destruction of habitats, and about just how many species are on the critically endangered list. These animals are not just there for us to look at, they are part of an ecosystem that we are destroying, and their decline is our alarm bell — we need to take action now.

What advice do you have for women who want to become more conscious consumers?

Consumers have the power! As a manufacturer, we need consumers to ask for goods that don’t damage the environment. Recycled gold and silver should be a choice in all high street jewellers but it will only get there if consumers ask for it. We need to work together, every one of us can be part of the solution.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background — what inspired you to start SSY Designs?

My background is in the arts however I took a hiatus and went to the corporate world to secure my future. (my financial future that is). I thought that was going to be my future so at night I would paint, dance, draw and even restore furniture that I found in second hand stores.

SSY Designs started as a single product, called shoe jewelz that we have patented and trademarked globally. We have over 100+ designs that we create and manufacture in our studio. I ended up buying my own industrial sewing machines and hired a talented seamstress to help my ideas come to life — and boy did they! I am so happy with our line. Its a slow moving process but we are enjoying every minute. Plus everything is made in our studio right here in NYC.

What are ‘Shoe Jewelz’ and how is it going to change our shoe game forever?

Shoe Jewelz take your shoes to the next level. All you do in slip them over the ball of your shoe and voila… a brand new pair. You can honestly have one pair of shoes but as many styles as you want just by adding shoe jewelz. Fringe for that flapper night, bugs for a picnic, studs for your rock and roll days, fur, hearts, rhinestones, beads, snakes, butterflies, you name it!

SSY Design is all about social responsibility as well. Could you tell us about the soon to be launched ‘Love Me, Love U’ collection?

SSY is grateful for its amazing opportunities, and we are constantly working to give back. Whether its global or interpersonal we strive to make peoples days or lives easier. The SSY Team has put together a huge sewing kit for a young Haitan child in the Turks and Caicos after we found out that he loves to sew and design clothing but doesn’t have access to a machine or fabrics. When their government shut down, we posted an ad and hired a furloughed employee. We paid her daily, so she could keep food on her families table and not fall behind. The job was over as soon as our government reopened but we met the best person and honestly miss having her. We have sales just for minimum wage workers and price things at 5 dollars and give them a 10 dollar coupon. Our cups are definitely not running over but we feel better when someone does too.

As for Love Me Love U, we just filled for a 501.c3 and we are currently designing pendants and t-shirts with its amazing logo. We are praying it comes back accepted for a trademark. We will launch Lovemeloveu.org as a platform to learn about our charitable endeavours and who we support. Basically, 100% of the proceeds of whatever we sell on that site will go straight to a charity. We haven’t decided if we will partner with specific organisations or allow the customer decide where to donate.In any case we are extremely excited, the first line will be priced to buy at under $100.

What has been the biggest challenge you have faced as an entrepreneur so far?

I think the biggest challenge I still struggle with, is instant gratification. If I design something I need it made right away. Unfortunately, it can get costly and it may not be the best design after all.

What advice do you have for women who would like to become a GirlBoss like yourself?

The GirlBoss title feels so cool! Ive created this business organically, and I let my instincts lead the way (MOST of the time). I may not do it all but I know how to do almost every aspect of my company. If I don’t know it, I research the heck out of it. I have made a lot of mistakes however I can say that I pretty much let them roll, Iearn and move on. My team are also an amazing group of young women who are all Girl-bosses in their own right.

Any GirlBoss knows the challenges of working in a male dominated environment, but it is one where Clare Villar strives. Her wonderful animal portraits have been commissioned by A-list celebrities and her impressive military artwork has gotten her an audience The Queen.

We catch up with Clare Villar and talk about how she carved out a niche for herself in such a unique industry, the complexities of her work, and how timing, focus, and positivity can make the difference in achieving your dreams. For Clare Villar, her incredible military art work has made her a shining star amongst brass medals.

Tell us a little bit about yourself. What made you decide to become a military artist? Have you always had a connection with the military?

I actually trained as an Illustrator from Falmouth University in 1995. After qualifying, I decided to go to London where I worked for various publishing houses before getting married and moving to Ludlow, Shropshire in 1999.

I had been doing my animal portraits as a hobby and actually had a waiting list of a few months. It was at this point I decided to take the leap of faith to pursue my dream of being a full time artist. My husband was serving with the Royal Mercian Lancastrian Yeomanry at the time; and the current Colonel, David Leigh, commissioned me to do a Roll of Honour. Rolls of Honour where popular about a hundred years ago and they depicted the fallen soldiers; names from the wars. Our idea was to reinvent it to include the current serving soldiers names. It took about six months to design the Roll and another three to four months to produce it.

Could you explain to our readers what kind of artwork a military artist does?

To describe my Rolls of Honour, they are approximately A1 in size and depict all the current serving soldiers names hand written in calligraphy with hand painted cap badge, they normally contain about 650 to 700. Once I have completed an enormous one for the Loyal Edmonton Regiment in Canada, which included 979 names and over a thousand miniature maple leaves.

I am so lucky to have found a totally unique niche market with my artwork. My work has been presented to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, Princess Anne, and Prince Edward. In 2018, I won the Business Excellence Award for my military artwork and in July 2018 I was selected as a finalist for the Great British Entrepreneur Awards, Creative Industries.

My artwork has enabled me to travel around the world, to Australia, Canada, Cyprus, Germany with potentially other countries in the pipeline. The Australian Invictus Games Team commissioned a Roll of Honour to depict their competitors in 2018 and my WW1 Roll of Honour was presented to government VIPs in Canada.

You also work on some fabulous animal portraits – do you have a favourite piece/subject?

I started my career doing animal portraits.I still love doing these as it’s so different and a welcome break from my military artwork, although that has now reached a different level too. I have been commissioned by various public figures such as Nick Mason of Pink Floyd, Trisha Goddard, and Will Greenwood to name only a few. My favourite piece was when I was commissioned by Nick Mason a few years ago to paint all four of his black labradors. It was amazing and I am very lucky to exhibit at his house every two years, which he opens to the public.

I have also just been given the most amazing opportunity to work with Louise Kennedy,who is internationally recognised as one of Ireland’s most successful fashion designers. Their flagship store is in Belgravia in London, and I get to work with her on a new clothing range, specifically in regard to my animal portraits. It is an exciting project and I have to keep pinching myself that it is actually happening!

Girl Bosses are fearless and confident – and you are constantly dealing with Generals, Coloners, and Brigadiers. What has been the biggest challenge you have faced as a GirlBoss so far?

Working in a very male dominated environment has made me fearless and confident, but generally the type of people I deal with are polite, professional, and treat me with the utmost respect.

The challenges I face on an a daily basis have to do with the complexity of my artwork. I can’t make any mistakes otherwise I have to start from scratch, and when you are writing 650/700 names in calligraphy then a huge amount of concentration is needed. One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced was whether or not I was going to be taken seriously as an up and coming military artist. I’m competing with mainly male artists in this field, but my advantage has been that my artwork is completely different from anything else on the market.

My biggest challenge as a GirlBoss is juggling all aspects of my life from family, career, and my artwork. I am in charge of my own destiny and if I had any advise for any women out there, worried about taking the plunge into uncertainty, is that timing is vital. You need to be ready to take the plunge and do your homework. You hear every day that you can achieve your dreams, which is true, but it comes down to hard work, belief, drive, and passion. Without these it won’t work, you have to be ready to take the knock backs and rejection, but this will make you stronger and more determined to succeed.

You need to have a positive outlook because negativity won’t achieve anything. There are a lot of women in business that I respect and learn from. Lady Karren Brady being one of them as she is supporter of my business, her outlook and message is clear and incredibly powerful. We can all succeed, it’s up to us to determine our future and our success.

  • What should it be?
  • Will my audience love it?
  • How do I make it attractive?

The key to a successful brand is understanding your target audience. Dig deep into this, don’t take shortcuts. Your audience will determine who you are.

You can achieve much more if you get very specific. Write down detailed information about your potential customers. These can include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Age
  • Location
  • Gender
  • Education
  • Interests
  • Goals

To learn how to build a brand for your business, you might not need all of the above details. But they will be crucial to some businesses. Other businesses might require even more details.

If I had a business of selling pet toys and I wanted to turn it into a brand, here’s the info I would gather.

3. Determine Your Position in the Market

Just as Adidas can’t be a source of laptops for tech geeks, your brand can’t be everything to everyone.

The most important thing is to find something to focus on and do only that. For Adidas, this is sporting gear. The main question you need to answer in order to build a successful brand is – What’s your position in the market?

The answer is usually very simple. The first part of the answer is about what you can offer to the market. “We’re selling pet toys for pet owners to entertain their dogs.”

The second part of the answer is how you’re different from the competition.

“As opposed to most other pet toy retailers, our pet toys are made with materials that will not harm the pet, even if it eats the toy.”

This is important because this is what you’ll be pushing to consumers. What makes you different is what will be your selling point.

You can also write this as your mission statement if your business type allows it. It won’t always fit, but it might be nice to have.

4. Build Your Brand’s Personality

The brand’s personality is how you’ll be interacting with customers. It’s different for every business and factors like target audience will make a huge impact on brand personality.

This step is crucial to learning how to start a brand. It’s even more important for growing that brand.

But it doesn’t have to be hard. It can be as easy as using “I” or “You” in blog posts. That sends a personalized tone, which resonates with the reader. This would be better suited if you’re selling to consumers, but not to other businesses.

Other examples of building a brand personality can be:

  • Sharing videos of the manufacturing process
  • Posting stories with real experience
  • Posting about your products in an unconventional manner

5. Integrate Your Brand Everywhere

It’s important to note that no matter how many points of contact you have, you should implement your brand in the same way. Remember when we said that consistency is key?

This is where it plays a huge part. In order for people to recognize your brand, they need to see it in all your contact points. That way it’ll be easier for customers to affiliate the colors or conversation tone with your brand.

Include your brand’s visuals, tone of speaking in all the outside communications – email, chats, propositions, etc

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what inspired you to start Butter Me Up Organics?

I grew up in a very natural minded household where we were bringing our own takeout containers, water bottles,and recycling long before it was cool. It was quite the opposite then. As an adult, I grew into my own conservation mindset and knew that if I started a business, it would need to include those elements.

I startedButter Me Up Organics in response to the lack of natural products on the market. I would shop at natural grocery stores as they were the only places that had items without all of the toxic ingredients.Even then I would leave with items I didn’t really want, as they were the only ones that didn’t have the ingredients I avoided. When I spent way too much money on a body butter that I didn’t want just because it fit my criterium, I decided then and there, I can do this and Butter Me Up Organics was born. The name pays homage to that body butter moment; and that that was the first item I made.

I vowed to create a brand that was organic, zero waste and contained no synthetic anything. I use only organic oils, butters, herbs, essential oils and botanicals to craft each item. All items are handmade, small batch and well researched. I stand behind all of them!

Butter Me Up Organics is all about all natural and organic products. Could you run us through how your products are made?

Absolutely! First, when I’m creating a new product, I spend a great deal of time researching and formulating. Every product I’ve ever made is my own unique recipe; and each item is designed for a therapeutic purpose. I use a combination of herbs, oils, butters, and essential oils for maximum effectiveness. When its time to actually make the items, I personally hand make each one. Some items take months to make as I infuse my own oils and time creates the potency. Each item is made in a small batch in my studio, which has its own commercial kitchen. All items are hand mixed, poured, and manufactured by me so that I can guarantee the quality and effectiveness of each item that gets into your hands.

How important is sustainability to your brand? Could you tell us a little bit about your sustainable practices?

This is one of the core pillars of my brand and has been since its inception. I was organic before people really knew what that was and have been zero waste since the beginning. Almost all of my containers are glass and are made of at least 30% post recycled material. All items are recyclable, labels are printed with soy inks on recycled papers, ALL of my packing materials are either up-cycled or recycled materials. I utilise paperboard tubes instead of plastic for lip balms and eyeshadows and will always choose the most Eco-friendly packaging, materials, and options for the least amount of negative earth impact.

In terms of ingredients, (which is my passion), all are organic, cruelty free, and sustainable as a whole. I am super picky about my ingredients and how/where they were sourced from. I ensure that all of my suppliers maintain the same practices I demand from mine. I was asked so many times in the beginning if I would make things non-organic and in plastic, because people didn’t really understand it. I held true to my core values and luckily we’ve moved into a time where people are waking up to the importance of sustainability and conscious brands.

What has been the biggest challenge you have faced as an entrepreneur so far?

Learning all of the things I’m not good at. Owning your own business comes with so many different elements; some which play to your strengths and some that don’t. I love the creative side where I get to make and create; and I love interacting with my customers at shows and online. However, all of the technical things that come with my business are such a challenge for me, my brain just doesn’t work like that! Luckily, there are experts who are good at those things and I defer that to them.

What advice do you have for women who would like to become a GirlBoss like yourself?

Find what makes your heart sing. It’s easy to be inspired by people and think that you should do what they do. Be inspired by them, but figure out what truly makes YOUR heart happy and don’t emulate someone else. Find YOUR calling. It’s such a gift to your soul to be doing exactly whatyou should be doing and that passion will always inspire others. It’s really true what they say, find what you love and you won’t work a day in your life. It’s so true, but be prepared to work some crazy hours!
