Hayley Bieber, Kendal Jenner and Selena Gomez are big fans, Chrissy Teigen raves about it, so what is the buzz around lymphatic drainage therapy? I booked myself onto a course at SHE Studio to find out more about the latest celeb wellbeing trend and discover if it can improve your health.

Your lymphatic system is part of your immune system. It is essentially a network of tissues and organs that help rid the body of toxins, waste and other unwanted materials protecting you from disease by transporting infection -fighting white blood cells throughout the body. When the system gets blocked you hold onto toxins that the body does not want. Drinking plenty of water and exercise help keep your lymphatic system heathy but lymphatic drainage therapy helps move the fluids around the body and rid it of toxins quickly.

SHE Studio offers Lymphatic drainage roller treatment, Roll Slender, that delivers a 60-minute massage targeting the body in key areas. Four times more effective than a manual lymphatic massage, the Roll Slender activates the lymph system, breaks down fat tissue and tones the skin. Owner and lymphatic massage expert, Alex Martin recommended I start with two to three sessions a week for four weeks to notice a change. The treatment involves straddling and moving over the roller in various positions for a couple of minutes at a time to hit the key spots and encourage fluid to move around the body more effectively. The rollers rotate gently across the area mimicking the same technique as a massage. The treatment encompasses the whole body, massaging the back and front of your legs, tummy, arms and bum. At the same time the infrared light helps to heal your skin and muscles as well as increase collagen production to improve your skin’s strength and elasticity. My first session left me feeling a little itchy. “That’s great, it means its working” exclaimed Alex. The itching is a result of the toxins breaking down and moving about the body so its important to drink plenty of water during and after the treatment.

The lymph is connected to immunity, digestive wellbeing and even mind health. A sluggish lymphatic system can result in fatigue, poor digestion, brain fog, bloating and frequent headaches. Roll Slender treatment circulates immune cells around the body, improves the absorption of excess fluid which flushes out the toxins, helps balance your nervous system and prevents inflammation. As well as health benefits, when coupled with a healthy lifestyle it can support weight loss, reduce cellulite and tone the skin. According to Alex “The main benefits of the rollers is to stimulate the lymph nodes, distribute nutrients around the body and eliminate toxins. Regular weekly sessions can boost your over health and wellbeing.”

While lymphatic drainage therapy is big with the A-listers in Hollywood it is also nudging its way into the wellness routines of the UK’s rich and famous. Alex is discreet about her clientele but while I’m there a well know TV personality drops by to roll and I overhear another client talking about a famous singer who lives close by and regularly comes to the studio. SHE Studio is also filling the feed of the Instafamous who live in the surrounding area, with their posts and stories capturing their roll.

I was eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly while undergoing the Roll Slender course, but I noticed a change in my body shape and the texture of my skin. My tummy is a stubborn area I struggle to lose fat from but after using the roller it was visibly flatter and more toned. My bum and thighs were also less dimpled. At the end of my four-week course I had lost a total of 19 inches across my body. All I need now is a holiday to show off my new bikini bod.

To book a course of treatments or enquire about purchasing a Roll Slender contact Alex at SHE Studio.

LA does roof top bars like no other city. A combination of warm balmy nights and Instagrammable views of the Los Angeles skyline make it the perfect place to take in dreamy, tangerine sunsets and cocktails.

Here at House of Coco, we’ve sussed out the best bars for sky-high views, delicious drinks, good tunes and a sprinkle of that cool Cali-vibe.

Skybar at the Mondrian, West Hollywood

If you are looking for that hip, Hollywood glamour then the Skybar at the Mondrian is the place to visit. During the day it’s a chic poolside lounge, perfect for soaking up some rays and relaxing and, at night, it turns into one of the hottest party spots in LA. World-class DJs pump out the tunes while guests hang out sipping on champagne, signature cocktails, spirits and beers. Boasting some of the finest views of the city, this popular rooftop bar is the place to be seen; so, dress to impress.

Mama Shelter, Hollywood

Take in the sweeping views of Hollywood at this casual, chilled rooftop bar. Settle down on one of the bright, cosy sofas and sample the rustic, home-cooked food. Think baby back ribs that just drop off the bone and home-made cookies; just like mama would bake. This is a great venue to meet up with friends, grab a bite to eat, sample a cocktail from their infamous Moscow Mule menu, lounge on the day beds or have a go at the table games and foosball.

Hot tip: Mama’s has a first come, first served policy so try and get there early in the evening.

Above SIXTY, Beverly Hills

Located on the rooftop of the SIXTY Beverly Hills, Above SIXTY was named LA’s best rooftop al fresco bar and restaurant. With an extensive bar and 360 views of the city, it’s easy to see why. There’s a contemporary and stylish split-level terrace; the lower has a bar and lounge seating while the roof terrace has a pool, lounge areas and cabanas. Hot tip: Even if you are staying at the hotel, make a reservation as it gets busy.

Petit Ermitage, West Hollywood

You might well believe that you are in the Mediterranean, rather than Hollywood, when you arrive at Petit Ermitage. This beautiful boho bar is like an Italian secret garden. The pool and bar area is flanked with citrus trees, scattered with twinkly fairy lights. Sip on cocktails created by the Spirit Master in the Butterfly Bar and escape the ordinary. This Hollywood hideaway is humming with birds and butterflies. On an evening, step in the gypsy wagons and have your tarot cards read or snuggle under a blanket and watch an exclusive film premiere on the fire deck.

Hot Tip: This is guest-only, so you need to be staying at the hotel to get in.

With the new year comes Hollywood’s awards season. It kicked-off with a glittering bang last weekend with the 77th Golden Globe Awards- thank you for the laughs, Ricky Gervais! – and if you’re anything like me, with that comes the anticipation of who is wearing what and generally, just basking in the fabulousness of it all. But how do the stars get red-carpet ready? From sweat lodges to vitamin injections, #TeamCoco got the scoop on on how they make the most of West Hollywood’s world-famous wellness and shopping experiences, in the heart of Los Angeles.

Sweat it out at the ‘Urban Sweat Lodge’: Join one of West Hollywood’s alternative sweat sessions at the Shape House, offering a sweating experience wrapped in a heated blanket whilst watching Netflix. During the sweat session, the heart receives a workout similar to that of a ten-mile run, resulting in an intense, detoxifying, health-boosting sweat, burning 800-1,600 calories. Individual sweat sessions cost $65.

Revitalise with vitamin injections: Rehab Wellness is a medical wellness centre, offering a variety of healthcare and aesthetics to help guests feel better, look younger and live longer. One of the most popular treatments on offer is the vitamin injection, with shots starting from $24. Benefits include increased energy and metabolism, improved digestion and skin health.

Give your face a workout: Opened inside the 1 Hotel in September, FaceGym has made its way to LA following the opening of six locations in the UK and one in New York City. The concept is for ‘Trainers’ to perform a range of non-invasive workouts for your face and employ the latest cutting-edge technology and high-performance skincare products.

Pause, breathe and unplug: Unplug Meditation, the world’s first drop-in, secular meditation studio, opened its doors in West Hollywood in April 2014. The wide variety of simple and eclectic classes are led by top experts, inspiring visits to pause, breathe and unplug daily, to get calmer, healthier and happier.

For #TeamCoco the word ‘road-trip’ instills excitement in our hearts, let a lone the words ‘Californian road-trip’. Our minds are instantly turned towards the adventure that lies ahead, embodying everything we stand for, freedom, exploration, fun, and of course a little dose of luxury. Road-trips require, a lot of planning, a lot of organising and a lot of research. From where you will start to where you will end, from what car you will drive, who will drive and of course your budget. It’s essential to be prepared for each destination and every incident (good or bad) that could potentially occur. With that said, we’ve rounded up our top stops for a Californian road-trip so you can truly make the most out of your trip and ensure you see as much of what this state has to offer as possible. Flying in to LAX is a good idea to start (queue Miley Cyrus ‘Party in the USA’ lyrics) and once you’ve collected your car/campervan/cadillac, its a one hour drive to Newport Beach. There are so many things to do when it comes to the ocean from sunset cruises, paddle boarding and with the local beaches being known for their waves its great for surfers or if you fancy giving surfing lessons a go. The beaches are essentially the centre of a stay here, the harbous, the hiking and even some wine tasting have uncomparible views of the ocean. There is so much scope for luxury too, from spa treatments to shopping and even where you stay, there is a sophisticated and aspirational atmosphere here that makes you want to stay.

After a 2 hour drive the next stop is Santa Monica, a coastal city west of LA. Staying here gives you the option to stay by the beach or venture into downtown LA. Santa Monica is known for its Pier, with the the only over-water ferris wheel in California, arcades, places to fish, restaurants, shopping and of course the original muscle beach, the pier is a destination in itself. It is also home to the Pacific Park amusement park, Santa Monica is the perfect place to unwind but also let loose; the city changes in the evening and the vibe shifts from relxaing at a rooftop bar to dancing all night at a club.

Energetic, cool, creative and urban, are just a few words to describe West Hollywood, just half an hours drive away from Santa Monica.. With a nightlife that has pushed boundaries since the 1920’s the Sunset Strip now features Chateau Marmont and comedy clubs, all of which are a must and with a number of renowned restaurants, your evenings here are pretty much sorted. In the day time its time to both recover and explore; shopping on Rodeo Drive, a hike to the Hollywood sign, a stroll along the Walk of Fame and a day at Universal Studios are just a few ways in which you can spend your days. it’s safe to say you will most likely need a few days here to truly make the most out of this eccentric place.

After a fun-packed few days in West Hollywood, a 2 hour and 10 minute drive allows you escape to Palm Springs. You can spend your days here lounging in luxury by a hotel pool, shopping on golf courses or in the spa. If you still fancy exploring then Palm Springs has a lot to offer, as this isn’t just the home to Coachella; with hot springs, hiking and biking trails with incredible views of the valley are well worth doing, just be sure to be equipped for the intense seasonal heat. There are also an array of vintage boutiques, bars, restaurants, botanical gardens and wonderful architecture, Palm Springs is an ideal stop on a Californian road trip.

Rugged rock formations, cacti, twisted trees and an expansive landscape; Joshua Tree National Park is worlds away from the city of Palm Springs despite it being just an hours drive. Situated between the Colorado and Mojave Deserts with views over Coachella Valley and the San Andreas Fault, Joshua Tree is a must. You can leisurely drive through the park in around 4 hours but ensure you make it to Key’s view in time for sunset or if you’re an early bird, sunrise. Lately the park has been vandalised and the recover from this damage is said to take 200-300 years, so if you do visit, it is important to stick to set routes and appreciate the park, the nature and the wildlife within it.

Around 20 minutes away is your next destination, Pioneer-town; originally built by Hollywood in the 1940’s as a film set but also as functioning town where workers could stay and live. The town looks and feels like you have been dropped off in an old western film, with no pharmacy, no supermarket, one restaurant and a few places to stay, it is un-liveable for some, for others however its a haven. A mix of old and new residents with a scattering of tourists, living here isn’t easy, the hostile desert environment, cacti, scorpions, snakes and wild animals along with the fact your immersed in complete darkness at night, staying here is most definitely an adventure, probably the most surreal one in your life.

Another once in a lifetime stop is up next and is a good 4 hour drive away, so ensure you have a good playlist lined up, plenty of snacks and most importantly enough gas to get you from A to B in the desert. Death Valley is one of the hottest and driest places in America but is one that can’t be missed. In just three days you are able to explore, the ghost town, colourful rocks, sand dunes, the Devils golf course, Titus Canyon and Badwater and Basin’s Salt flats. A stay here is well worth the extreme conditions.

Would this road-trip be complete without a stop in Las Vegas? Not only does it have an international airport but it is a complete contrast to the last few stops. We would say it immerses you back into a cosmopolitan reality but lets face it, Vegas is anything but that. The crazy night life and entertainment, fine dining, gambling and pool parties are all something it’s necessary to experience here yet the Nevada has way more to offer too. The stratosphere is a great place to go for thrill seekers, the Bellagio has its own botanic gardens, the Venetian can transport you to Venice in a gondola and a helicopter ride to the Grand Canyon allows you to experience one of the natural wonders of the world. Making Vegas the ideal way to end your trip but you may need another week or so to recover.

Los Angeles, city of angels, city of lights; this sprawling metropolis captures hearts and exports you into its eclectic lifestyle. With a population of over 4 million, L.A is as chaotic as it is beautiful. Full of diversity in every way, a to do list in Los Angeles varies from Disney to Venice Beach. There is so much to do, so much to see and so much vibrancy that it’s possible to run yourself into the ground trying to do it all in one trip. With that said it doesn’t mean a trip has to be jam-packed. It is possible to experience the city’s unique quality of life, thats why #TeamCoco have selected our top five things to slot into your itinerary, in order to have the full Los Angeles experience. Let’s face it, if you don’t include the below in your trip (and Instagram it) did you even go to L.A?

In 1958, eight stars were revealed on Hollywood Boulevard, now there are over 2,645 (Jack Black being the latest addition), so you are sure to find at least one of your favourite celebs on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. If you don’t fancy traipsing the 18 blocks, or you’re short for time, you can search online for the person’s star you are looking for to find its exact location. Otherwise we definitely recommend strolling the Blvd, it’s a good 1.3 mile walk so stopping in the quirky cafes and bars as you go, is necessary. Also fun fact, its a sponsorship of $30,000 to have a star on the Walk of Fame!

Next up, a landmark and cultural U.S icon; the Hollywood sign. Situated on Mount Lee, the 45 foot tall and 352 feet long sign, which was originally used as a real estate advert in the 20’s reading, “Hollywood Land’ and later restored in 1949 with the last four letters removed, may be a cliche to do for L.A but it is essential. There are various views where you can see the sign in all it’s glory, like from the boulevards and Runyon Canyon. However, nothing beats the view from above the sign, the size of the letters are put into perspective and the panoramic views of L.A are a sight to behold. It’s a 2-3 hour hike up to the Griffith Park Observatory to get this view but it’s so worth it and whilst you’re up there you may as well pop into the observatory.

À la Pretty Woman, Rodeo Drive is up next. A two-mile long street in Beverley Hills that has been the epitome of luxury since the 60’s. From Armani to Harry Winston it’s a designer dream. If these aren’t quite exclusive enough for you, there are couturiers where you need an appointment before you can even step foot through the door. If shopping isn’t your thing or these are way out of your range (we hear you) then window shopping and people watching are just as much, if not more fun. After an $18 million renovation in the early 2000’s, there is also a Walk of Style, where fashion icons are honoured for their work in style and fashion. So it’s definitely worth a trip to get lost in the splendour one of the most famous roads in the world.

Baseball, may not be one or even any of the things you first think of when planning a trip to L.A but it’s one of the most popular sports in America for both spectators and the participants, so it’s a worthwhile experience. Home to the Los Angeles Dodgers the Dodgers Stadium is the largest ballpark in the country, with a capacity of 56,000 seats, this is definitely the place to try a baseball game. If your trip is seasonal to the game, book tickets, you wont regret it, whether you enjoy the sport or not. The atmosphere is unbeatable, the merchandise is everything you imagine and the food, well, mac n’ cheese, nachos and infamous Dodger Dogs… it’s the American Dream and you’ll be a baseball convert before you know it.

If you’re truly short for time on your trip and your good with heights/flying we couldn’t recommend a helicopter tour more. A perfect way to escape reality yet take in everything Los Angeles has to offer, especially if you can nab yourself an open door ride. The pilots know L.A inside out and even better than some locals, they are a mind of unique information. With breathtaking views of the Pacific coast, Malibu beach mansions, the city skyline, the Dodgers Stadium, Universal Studios, Disney, Griffith Observatory and of course the Hollywood sign; a helicopter ride is the ideal way to see absolutely everything Los Angeles has to offer from a completely different perspective.

There’s so many exciting happenings in beauty and beauty tech and Glam Doll are right there, in the spotlight! We sat down with Andrea, founder of Glam Doll, about her journey from aviation to Hollywood glam!

HOC: Great to meet you, Andrea; what’s your elevator pitch for Glam Doll?

Andrea: Glam Doll is the leading supplier of Hollywood inspired beauty products for homes and professional salons. Specialising in Hollywood Glam Mirrors, Speciality Lighting, Cosmetic Organisers, Vanity Tables and more Glam Doll’s goal is to help everyone ‘Bring Hollywood Home’. Our aim is to provide top quality products, attentive and personalised service that provides our customers long term value.

HOC: How awesome! What was your journey to starting your business?

Andrea: I was born and raised in Seattle and started my career in the Aircraft Leasing Industry which brought me to Miami and eventually to Ireland over the course of 15 years. Aviation is an interesting industry and I gained a wealth of experience including, commercial negotiations, managing technical specifications, cross border logistics and global marketing while travelling the world!

Given the experience I had gained I always wanted to build a company and brand that was received by customers as excellent, so when I came to a point in my life where I could take this step, I took it but it was not in the direction I had anticipated. While redesigning our daughter’s bedroom I identified a gap in the Irish & UK market for quality beauty products that provided customers a new experience with lifelong products. I set about researching, designing and manufacturing our innovative range of Hollywood Mirrors, Speciality Lighting and more.

HOC: We love when new business ideas pop up from unexpected places. Tell us more about what it was like when first starting up?

Andrea: Starting this business was a big leap of faith and I had to trust my instincts. We made a decision to position the business in such a way that we could protect ourselves in the beauty industry by providing scale. We decided that rather than initially investing in infrastructure or staff we would invest in a variety of quality products that would span the market and be available immediately. This meant designing for the future and placing large orders to satisfy our anticipated future demand at a price point where we could remain strong even with potential new entrants.

HOC: What does the team at Glam Doll look like?

Andrea: We are building an incredible team of strong, creative and brilliant women where we encourage each other and foster a sense of community. It’s important to me that we create a culture at Glam Doll of leading our market which I believe requires mutual respect, hard work and real customer-oriented innovation so that Glam Doll stays at the top of our market while developing new markets.

HOC: We’ve in awe of a strong female team! How has your business grown since starting?

Andrea: When I launched the business 18 months ago it was from my kitchen table in the Irish countryside! We had a small storage facility close by for our stock which was quite unglamorous, and we worked hard on building our brand and getting the word out about what we are doing and our Hollywood inspired products. We were fortunate in that word of mouth really spread as more and more clients purchased our products and connected with the Glam Doll brand. We grew from strength to strength and worked in getting our products into salons, training academies and client’s homes throughout the Ireland and the UK.

Due to our rate of growth and customer demand, last September we set up our HQ in a modern 3-storey warehouse in Celbridge, Co. Kildare. We have a showroom where clients can come and see the quality of our products first hand and I designed an elegant office space with future growth in mind.

It’s come quite far from the kitchen table and I’m just so proud of what we have achieved!

HOC: So inspiring! How can someone prepare themselves for entrepreneurial life?

Andrea: It really requires a leap of faith, to me it was an unknown frontier and I just jumped in and grabbed the reins, determined to succeed and I believed in my capabilities. To me, being an entrepreneur means very long days, sleepless nights, challenges that sometimes seem insurmountable but always persevering, pushing through with the next goal in mind and most importantly having an incredible team and network of supporters. To see our ideas come to life and be appreciated by so many people is the positive outcome from all the hard work and this fuels my passion to keep going and growing.

HOC: Alongside fueling your passion; how do you take time out, do you ever find it difficult?

Andrea: Life can be quite hectic and trying to find balance between running a business, a home, 4 children and pets is a lot to juggle. I have found that it really helps to try and be in the moment and not worry too much about what happened yesterday or what is on tomorrow just being mindful now, otherwise it can be overwhelming.

We do try to get away when we can whether it be a local getaway or something further afield, it’s important to take time out and recharge. We have lovely wooded paths near our home and just getting outside with our 2 dogs helps calm the craziness of the day!

HOC: What’s your ambition for your brand?

Andrea: When I created Glam Doll, it was important to me that we develop a brand that is synonymous with high quality, innovative yet affordable products. Our decision to build an ecommerce business rather than a brick and mortar high street shop was that we wanted to ensure our products were accessible to everyone no matter where you live. The on-line distribution costs we believe provide the best value for our customer and is the 2nd part of how we plan to protect our market position as we grow. We want to provide that Hollywood feeling for clients & salons so they can create their own Glam Stations at home or in their business. We hope to become a household name and continue to grow our business in the UK & Europe, Bringing Hollywood Home.

HOC: With your brand being built around the idea of Hollywood, we have to ask, do you visit LA much, where are your favourite spots?

Andrea: I absolutely love California, LA in particular, and the backdrop of Hollywood was my inspiration for the brand. I visit LA once a year and am going next week. I love staying in Santa Monica at Shutters on the Beach, it has such a laid-back vibe, it provides instant relaxation. A favourite is taking the bicycles and riding along the shore down to Marina del Ray for fish tacos. Shopping provides something for everyone from the open-air market on Melrose to all the glitz and glamour of Rodeo Drive. Dinner at Nobu in Malibu is always on the list; the food, cocktails and the views are amazing!

HOC: Let’s finish with a classic question! The ’10 years ago’ challenge is all the rage on insta at the moment, what advice do you have for the 2009 you?

Andrea: In 2009, I was a single mother living in Miami working very hard to advance in my career while balancing family life. Looking back, I would tell myself to relax, enjoy each day and all will work out. Everything happens for a reason and these experiences makes us the person we are today. I would also advise how important it is to build a supportive network around you, the greatest feeling is when you can trust that someone has your back and you can hold each other up.

Wonderful to speak with you, Andrea!

There’s nothing better than slipping into some gorgeous nightwear, especially if you’ve just checked into a 5* hotel. As #TeamCoco are constantly travelling and are lucky enough to lay our head at some of the most prestigious hotels and resorts around the world, luxury nightwear is usually top of our packing list. However, as some of us are blessed with killer curves it can be hard to find nightwear which is high quality and has a fit that makes us feel a million dollars. One brand that champions the fuller figure and takes influence from Hollywood starlets is Bustoire. Our writer Jenna got behind the brand to chat to the CEO Joyce, to discover more about the brands history and how she transitioned from a career in Banking to designing glamorous slips…

________________________________________________________________

JC: So firstly, what was it like transitioning from working in banking to owning your own nightwear brand? Must have been quite a change of pace!

JL: Yes, definitely quite the change. I’ve worked in banking since I graduated with a mathematics degree. And although banking and fashion seem like polar opposites and in many ways they are, there are still similarities in skills that apply to both. I enjoy the whole process of designing and selecting the fabrics for each piece and love the detail and craftsmanship that goes into every garment. Seeing my designs come to life is very exciting. I like to work very closely with my manufacturer who is based in London and be present during the production phase. I source all the fabrics from the UK and only use the highest quality silk satin, silk chiffon and lace. I think it’s important to use natural, breathable fabrics, so that our garments are not only perfect for lounging but also sleeping in.

What makes my garments unique is that each piece has hidden bra support. The hidden bra support is made from Powernet a durable, strong, stretchy fabric that provides that much needed support for a bigger bust while still feeling comfortable and free. There is great attention to detail even down to the bra strap adjusters, which are gold plated. It was important to have our garments made in the UK and be an authentically British brand that is sustainable and ethical.

JC: We love the retro Hollywood vibe of your collection – was there a Hollywood pin-up who inspired some of your designs?

JL: My debut collection is inspired by Hollywood glamour and powerful, strong women whom I admire. The Josephine Babydoll for example was inspired by none other than Josephine Baker’s famous banana skirt which she first wore while performing in her show La Revue Nègre in the 1920s. The iconic skirt influenced the silk chiffon gathering and stitching. It drapes so elegantly against the skin and flows with such beauty.

JC: Why did you choose to focus your collection on larger busted women?

JL: I decided to focus on nightwear for fuller busted women because of my own experience of not finding beautiful, feminine and supportive nightwear for a larger bust. There has been some progress over the past 10 years with bras and swimwear for bigger cup sizes, however nightwear is still a very underserved market for DD+ women. I initially had the idea a few years ago while on day trip to Cambridge with a friend. While shopping we went into a well-known lingerie shop where my friend proceeded to purchase a red lace slip that came in the usual small, medium and large. I stood around knowing there was nothing in the shop that would fit me and just waited for my friend to pay.

On the train back to London I kept thinking about the red lace slip and why I was so used to seeing nightwear that didn’t come in larger sizes that supported a fuller bust. I felt frustrated and at the same time inspired. I decided there and then there needed to be a change. I eagerly brought out a notebook and pen and started sketching designs. I remember how empowering and freeing it felt. As soon as I reached home I took out my sewing machine and made my first prototype and that’s how the brand started.

JC: Who would be your dream stockist of Bustoire?

JL: I would love to see my brand in Selfridges, Harrods and Harvey Nichols in the UK, Barney’s, and Neiman Marcus in the US and luxury department stores in Australia, Dubai and Canada. Currently we are selling direct to customers through our online store and pop up shops.

JC: Can you tell us about a recent ‘Girl Boss’ moment?

JL: A recent Girl Boss moment was launching my first pop up shop in Islington over the Christmas holidays. It was amazing to see the customer’s reactions to the garments and being able to provide a physical retail as well as an online experience. We will be doing more pop up shops this year.

JC: We can’t wait to see one of your physical stores to come to life! Aside from all the excitement, what has been the hardest part of running your own clothing business?

JL: The most challenging part is splitting my time between my full time banking job and running a business. When people ask me how I do it, I say I don’t know what sleep is anymore which usually gets a few laughs. But in reality I try to stick to a schedule and plan ahead of time what needs to be done in the evenings and weekends. This helps me to stay focused. I am also a big believer in morning and night routines, which also helps. I don’t try to do everything myself and I’m lucky to have a fantastic and talented team to work with.

JC: What’s in the pipeline for 2019?

JL: You can look forward to Bustoire garments being stocked in luxury retail stores and boutiques in the UK and a new collection coming soon.

You know by now that we love a bit of luxury and we’re always so thankful to those front of house and behind the scenes who make our travelling experiences so incredible. To gain an insight into the, often crazy, world of delivering high end experiences, we were delighted to sit down with Priya Malhotra, the Head of VIP at Heathrow Airport.

HOC: So great to meet you, Priya, can you tell us about your role?

Priya: Heathrow is Europe’s biggest international airport. We fly to 190 destinations across the world and my role is to ensure that we give a world class service that exceeds our VIP customers’ expectations. The VIP service gives passengers a level of privacy they won’t receive anywhere else in an airport.

Our VIP team take care of everything; from security procedures to fine dining, we ensure the journey is effortlessly smooth. Customers are at the heart of everything we do and it’s my job to make sure we to deliver a luxurious and seamless airport experience. As well as making sure everything runs smoothly, my role also includes working behind the scenes to direct the vision of Heathrow VIP, strategic planning to enhance the service and building and nurturing internal and external partnerships.

HOC: What attracted you to this role and what steps have you taken in your career to get to this place?

Priya: I’ve worked in the luxury sector for over fifteen years and it’s an industry I’m extremely passionate about. Throughout my career I’ve always strived to have a good understanding of competitors and of clients’ needs to ensure I am always delivering the best possible service and quality in whatever I deliver.

Previously I worked in financial services, dealing with HNW (High Net Worth) stakeholders so I know high standards and what it takes to meet them. This helped me in my career change to Heathrow VIP and in my day to day role ensuring my team deliver bespoke experiences for each customer.

HOC: You must look around somedays and think ‘how on earth did I get into this?!’ Can you share any of your most surreal and amazing experiences?

Priya: I must admit I’ve had some memorable experiences however one of my most surreal (and proudest) moments was securing a partnership with Michelin-starred chef JasonAtherton. I’d only been in the job one month and Heathrow VIP didn’t even have a kitchen at that point. Within eighteen months we were serving seasonal dishes from the menu of his restaurant, Pollen Street Social.

HOC: Providing such an exceptional experience for your clients must be hard work and exhausting! What top tips do you have for unwinding in the evenings and self-care?

Priya: I am definitely a fan of luxury living and for me that doesn’t come in the form of things! Some days can be more exhausting than others however I always take a minute for myself in the evenings to think and breath. For me it’s about finding balance in life so I try to switch off from technology as much as possible, eat well and spend quality time with my family. As I have such an early start in the mornings (yep, 4am!) at weekends I make sure I’m refreshed and well rested for the week ahead.

HOC: We know there’s probably no such thing as a typical day but can you give us an insight into what a day would entail for you?

Priya: A typical day for me starts with a 6.30am with a briefing on the clients will be joining us that day and making sure we have everything prepared for their journey. After that I’ll usually spend about an hour catching up on emails before heading into a variety of meetings with partners, stakeholders and potential guests.

I also attend internal meetings on our long term strategy and direction of Heathrow VIP to make sure we’re all aligned and working towards the same goals. I usually finish the working day at around 4pm and start the commute home if I am not out networking with stakeholders or tasting delicious food.

HOC: What’s the most rewarding element of your job?

Priya: My favourite part of the job getting to choose what luxury items are available through the service. Recently I was lucky enough to get to taste test 10 different cheesecakes and decide which one was best. I get the final say on everything from the flowers in the lounges to the interiors of our cars. I love to see our guests savouring their time with us in their comfortable and quiet haven before they embark on their onward journey – many see this as an incredibly important part of their lifestyle.

HOC: Are there any quirky trends you are seeing in what your clients ask for – food, treatments etc? Any predictions for the future of VIP?

Priya: The world of luxury travel is ever changing and will continue to evolve as we transform the way we interact and engage with our clients. As part of this, we’ve seen our clients really respond to the growth of personalised experiences tailored to each travellers’ needs. We ensure we provide customers with whatever they need – from offering them a chance to choose whether to board first or last on their flight or making sure their magazines of choice are ready for them as they arrive, to giving them the opportunity to select a meal of their choice from a seasonal menu from world renowned chef Jason Atherton – it’s about making sure every individual experience is unique and enjoyable.

HOC: If you weren’t in this field, what else would you be doing?

Priya: I’d still be in the financial services!

HOC: Any tips for anyone looking to get into this field?

Priya: The luxury travel industry is a complex one however it’s absolutely worth it! I love my job and would encourage anyone who is interested in pursuing a career in this industry to keep on working to achieve their goals.

HOC: What’s the most common false assumption about the work you do?

Priya: That the term luxury only refers to how expensive something is. Luxury is the time, peace, quiet and space our customers receive, helping them to relax and unwind during their journey. It’s all about delivering a high-quality experience for our customers which is much more important than a price tag.
