Travel has undeniably been one of the hardest-hit communities during the pandemic crisis. Now that we’re finally seeing the light at the end of the COVID-19 tunnel — and with the UK announcing the list of ‘air bridge countries’ in Europe and beyond — here’s a roundup of all #TeamCoco’s favourite hotels that have reopened their doors this month, safer and better than ever.

The Mandrake, London

Don’t be fooled, this isn’t some lush tropical oasis in the middle of Bali, but instead the Jurema Terrace at The Mandrake London. From its famous glasshouse-inspired courtyard to the lavish jewel colours and golds swirling throughout its interiors; the Mandrake offers an artistic escape from the city beyond the walls — and escaping is just where it starts. The journey begins at the reception and you’ll definitely be feeling a sense of creative wonder right up until the minute you leave. Undoubtedly, The Mandrake offers a multi-sensory experience unlike anything else on the scene, and the great news is – it reopened its doors this month.

The Dixon, London, UK

This handsome boutique hotel has certainly inspired some last-minute staycations this summer. The Dixon may have been named after its Edwardian Architect, but everything else about it is as contemporary as it gets. Part of The Autograph Collection, the Dixon occupies a former Magistrate’s Court and has a unique aesthetic that blends old and new. Think wood panelled interiors, contemporary art, and a stunning entrance hall. With 193 rooms, a stunning restaurant, and the wealth of Southbank’s cultural scene within reach, we’ll soon be booking our staycations at The Dixon too.

Treehouse Hotel. London, UK

The Treehouse Hotel London — ‘little brother’ of 1 Hotels, — reopened on 4th July and is the perfect spot to book your next staycation. This sustainable gem is now offering a new wellness programme and revamped safety and hygiene measures which include Liberty-print face masks, created by Sheila Wright Akinsete. The hotel’s eclectic rooftop bar, The Nest, has also reopened its spacious terrace, and is the perfect Friday night spot for some socially-distanced cocktails while watching the sun set over London. Not to mention, the Cali-Mexican restaurant Madera and ground floor coffee shop Backyard have also reopened their doors, equipped with new al fresco and in-app ordering systems too.

Maslina Resort, Hvar, Croatia

Maslina Resort is a brand-new Relais & Chateaux property that combines luxe living with impeccable eco-credentials. The hotel is set to open in August and has already been selected to become a member of eco and sustainable tourism company, Green Pearls.

Maslina is located on the idyllic Maslina bay in Hvar Croatia and boasts a suite of mindful and holistic activities. From the kitchen’s locally-sourced Michelin-star menu to the hotel’s ‘garden-to-skin’ beauty ethos, everything at the Maslina Resort brings you closer to nature, which is exactly the kind of luxury escape we’re dreaming about to beat the lockdown blues.

Anantara Villa Padierna, Andalucía, Spain

The palatial Anantara Villa Padierna reopened its doors in the beginning of July, and we already can’t wait to hop on a plane to Spain. To celebrate its reopening, the hotel has launched a wanderlust-inducing three-night package which includes a three night-stay in a Junior suite, a 60-minute massage, flamenco lessons, and a traditional tapas dinner in Marbella old town.

The Anantara Villa Padierna Palace was designed by renowned British architect Ed Gilbert in 2003. Each luxury room in the breath-taking hotel was individually designed. Over 1,200 priceless works of art are displayed all over the property which also has a large swimming pool surrounded by manicured gardens, so you can lounge like a true Spanish princess.

Glenapp Castle, Ayrshire, Scotland

This stunning 17-bedroom Relais & Chateaux hotel is nestled in Scotland’s majestic Ayrshire coast. The castle features boasts 110 acres of picturesque Scottish countryside, perfect for long walks with plenty of physical distancing.

There are plenty of activities to lose yourself in at Glenapp Castle including perfume making, archery, clay pigeon shooting, and even tank driving. The highlight is the bespoke Hebridean Safari, which takes guests on a four night adventure getting up close and personal with Sottish wildlife. The hotel is reopening tomorrow (15 July) equipped with a new ‘Stay Safe’ policy to ensure that guests can rest assured that they can enjoy their stay in Glenapp Castle safely.

Roseate House, London, United Kingdom

The Roseate London is a handsome mid-century Grade-II listed townhouse that reopened on the 6th of July. The hotel — which was originally built in 1842 — has been restored to its original Victorian style featuring classic furnishings and oil paintings originally created in a bygone era. The hotel is just a short walk away from Hyde Park, which makes it the ideal spot for a sunny walk and some afternoon tea at the Hyde Restaurant, which is probably the perfect place to splash out for a post-lockdown treat.

Grand Hotel Dei Dogi The Dedica Anthology, Venice, Italy

Grand Hotel Dei Dogi, The Dedica Anthology, is a noble Venetian palace that exudes old world luxury. While the hotel is just twenty minutes from St. Mark’s square, it is an intimate oasis covered with private gardens, opulently decorated rooms, and plenty of grandeur.

The hotel’s new contemporary La Voga bar is also the perfect spot to indulge in a bit of local cuisine and enjoy a cocktail canalside. The hotel features 64 luxurious suites boasting high ceilings and garden views, offering a curated palazzo experience that’s certainly fit for royalty.

The Longevity Cegonha Country Club, Vilamoura, Portugal

The Longevity Cegonha Country Club reopened on the 4th of July and is the perfect place destress, relax and get back in touch with nature. The hotel is offering a ‘Feel De-Stressed and Rebalanced Package’ which includes guided meditation, healing therapy, balance therapy, massages, reiki and even a floatation session. How soon can we book a flight to Portugal?

The Magnolia Hotel, Quinta do Lago, Portugal

Located in the Quinta do Lago, the Magnolia Hotel is a mid-century paradise that is absolutely brimming with personality. The hotel opened in the beginning of July and even launched the Algarve’s only poolside open-air cinema, perfect for sipping Pina Coladas and spending an afternoon soaked in the sun.

That glittering ray of light at the end of the long lockdown tunnel is finally here, and most of us (especially us at #TeamCoco) are wasting absolutely no time in getting our travel plans in order.

Although we have a list of pre-approved travel corridor countries to choose from, now more than ever, a beautiful British staycation seems to be one of the best bets. Did you really want to wear a face mask on a thirteen-hour flight to St Barts anyway? Think about it, no long flights, easy to organise, and the opportunity to make a banging road trip playlist. We’re not quite suggesting Skegness become the new Marbs, but we’ve got plenty of UK hotspots for you to explore. We apologise in advance for any questionable weather.

Rockliffe Hall is a 5-star Victorian redbrick mansion hotel and spa in a little patch of nowhere not too far from Darlington in the North East. The idyllic location is just one of many appeals, which you’ll soon appreciate when you’re relaxing in the spa with nothing but the sound of the birds and cascading water to disturb you.

You can really make anything of a trip here. Romantic couple for two? Sure. Small family break? Great idea. Spa weekend away with mates? Literally, count us in. Of course, depending on when you’re reading this, we recommend to check in with any hotel about what services they can offer under government lockdown rules. These are crazy times.

Anyway, depending on what you’re after, our guess is there’s a package to suit (usually that means a couple of cheeky extras thrown in to tempt you). To give you an idea, here’s what we got up to.

Our first tip is to arrive as early as you can. Don’t beat the door down at the crack of dawn, but definitely leave yourself enough hours to make the most of the place.

Start with the spa in a box, it’s delivered to your room ready for your arrival and will guarantee to have you feeling zen faster than you can say ‘check in.’ With full sized Neom products, think candles, bath oil and face masks, you will easily while away many hours in the oversized bath complete with built in TV to guarantee you don’t miss you latest Neflix marathon.

In this brief period between the end of lockdown and the world getting back to normal, Rockliffe Hall have done a very good job at providing their famous 5-star service at a very sensible social distance. The spa team, for example, have put together in-room spa boxes, with all the products you need to pamper yourself silly, and even mini video tutorials on how to use them properly.

Imagine, robed up and facial-ed out and you hear a knock at the door. What could it be? Of course, it’s the new Champagne and Cocktail Trolley Service, serving up their best cocktails fresh at your door to enjoy on your own private terrace or balcony.

Social distancing aside, for most of the part it’s business as usual. A lot of the perks people enjoy at Rockliffe Hall, like taking in the grounds on a bike ride or enjoying a seven-course tasting menu in the restaurant are still readily available.

One of the things we absolutely love about Rockliffe Hall are their picnic hampers. A beautifully crafted lunch menu available to go (with the option to upgrade for this to include Champagne, which we obviously recommend) and their concierge will even point out some of the most picturesque spots on the estate to enjoy it.

Not sure about you, but the more we consider this different way of life, the more we’re actually loving it. Outdoor bike rides, relaxing in your own private spa, private picnics and cocktails literally made fresh for you at your door? Now, this is a ‘new normal’ we can really get behind.

Update: Rockliffe Hall has been certified as “good to go” by Visit Britain, and has also launched a Healthy Hospitality Charter so you know you can stay safe. Plus, if you check ahead of time to make sure their spa is open, you won’t be disappointed. – there are five treatment rooms, monsoon showers, hydropool, outdoor hot tub and foot spa. If you’re not already wet, the heated outdoor infinity pool is the serious icing on the spa cake, especially if you’re experiencing some of that questionable British summer weather we mentioned earlier. The spa has the absolute feeling of luxe – whatever treatments you take. They use only top brands like Neom and Caudalie which leave your body feeling truly taken care of, and oozing with the scents essential oils.

A winemaker guides guests through the vineyard, uncovering the winery process along the way. Visitors can also enjoy a five-wine tasting session, starting with Camel Valley’s most famous wine, Cornwall Brut. For a true Cornish experience, guests can stay in one of the holiday cottages. You have watched many people go scuba diving and have seen how fantastic it is. However, seeing it and doing it are two different things. You have now decided to brave it up and take up your first scuba diving trip. However, you are scared to death about it. If this is you, then worry not! You have come to the right place. Below are some of the scuba diving tips for beginners that you need to know as you embark on this fantastic adventure. Read on.

Be Comfortable In The Water.

One of the first things that you need to tick off your list before learning how to scuba dive is to be comfortable in the water. It does not make sense to go swimming in the ocean if you cannot swim 200m in the swimming pool comfortably. You should know how to float in water for about ten minutes, and also enjoy the water. Once you are comfortable swimming in the pool, it is time to take the challenge to the blue ocean waters!

Choose a Dive School.

You will need to choose an appropriate scuba diving training for you, where you will undertake your training. You will need around three full days of training to get your open water certificate. However, it is essential to choose a good dive school for you. Some of the things you should check out for are online reviews. Check these to see what other divers have said about them. If they are complaining about issues such as bad customer service, faulty equipment, and disorganization, then avoid them at all costs. You also need to choose a safe diving school that will ensure that your safety is their priority. Also, check to see that their student to instructor ratio is low, to ensure that the instructor has time to focus on you.

Check Your Equipment.

When scuba diving, it is crucial to ensure that all your equipment is in good working condition. Some common signs of faulty equipment include air leaks, broken buckles and foul-tasting air when you breathe out of your regulator. Also, avoid going diving with your camera as a beginner, no matter how tempting it may be. This is because you might find yourself getting distracted with it, by checking if it is capturing all the wonderful moments and end up ascending to the surface. Also, avoid diving when you are suffering from a cold as it will interfere with your ability to breathe underwater.

Do Not Panic.

You may be the best scuba diver in the world, but if you panic, then you might get an accident. It is therefore advised to keep calm to ensure that you can deal with any unforeseen issues head-on. An excellent way to keep yourself relaxed is to practice mindfulness and yoga.

Follow Your Instructor.

When scuba diving, it is essential always to listen and follow the advice of your instructor. They have been doing it for years, and they know what they are doing. You will note that some divers will opt to wander away, but it is not recommended as you are a beginner, and you need all the advice you can get.

Scuba diving is a beautiful experience, whether you are doing it to overcome your fears or to see the wildlife underwater. With the above tips, you will be ready to embark on this thrilling adventure and have the time of your life. Also, remember that diving is no joke and should be taken seriously. Therefore, ensure that you are not drunk while doing it, and have eaten well. So, what are you waiting for?

The Golden Mile is the apt name given to the stretch of heaven to be found on the south coast of Spain – between Puerto Banus in the west, and the edge of Marbella in the east. Sitting pride of place is the ‘Andalucian village’ of Puente Romano.

The O-G luxury destination, the Puente Romano Beach Resort Hotel, opened back in 1979 before ‘Marbs’ got the heyday it deserves. The area has been known for its flawless service and for changing with the times since then, welcoming Nobu in 2018 after its success in other party towns like Vegas and Ibiza.

The two hotels are centred around La Plaza, a buzzy open-air courtyard surrounded by Michelin stars, lush gardens and private villas. La Plaza is the place to see and be seen in Marbella.

Puente Romano Beach Resort

Puente Romano Beach Resort has its roots firmly planted on the Marbella scene, known as a destination in its own right.

The architecture is inspired by a quaint Andalucian village, with timeless blue and white tile patterns, terracotta rooftops and green palms, swaying against whitewashed walls. The hotel is formed of clusters of suites and villas – each of them unique in size and offering, from a simple room-for-two to an all-out five-bedroom mansion. The only problem you’ll have here is the amount of choice. Our hint? The Imperial Suite has a sauna and jacuzzi on a private terrace, with views down to the Med.

If you’ve got more mates than you know what to do with, each villa (there are three in total) has a private pool and ocean views. The interiors were designed by Andrew Martin – one of the most sought-after interior designers in the world. He’s won so many awards that there’s now an award named after him.

In between these clusters are the vast gardens that make up the resort, and in between you’ll find secluded swimming pools. Paths weave in and out, linking the resort directly down to the famous Marbs beach. Tip, whenever you venture out of the ‘village’, speak to the concierge and make sure you get the insider access. It’s one of the perks of being a guest here, and you won’t regret it.

One of the things that gets us every time at Puente Romano Beach Resort is the exquisite choice of food and drink that is so readily available; 14 restaurants to be exact. You can tell when people have been to Marbella and stayed at Puente Romano Beach Resort based on the amount of influencer-friendly food shots on their Instagram grid popping up in the weeks after. Their feeds are all about throwing back to a better time when they were sitting in El Chiringuito snapping seafood and sipping sangria, or down at the beach listening to DJ sets over a round of oysters and champagne at the Sea Grill watching the sun go down.

NOBU

If Puente Romano Beach Resort is the classic flagship destination in Marbella, Nobu is its naughty little sister.

Nobu arrived in 2018, some 40 years after Puente Romano Beach Resort, and has become an instant success, and one of the most exclusive locations in southern Spain.

Imagine, you’ve spent the day hanging out in the Mediterranean gardens, by one of the secluded pools, had lunch in La Plaza – washed down with an expertly crafted sangria – and caught a DJ set on the beach. You’re relaxing on your private terrace after a spa session wearing your Nobu gown taking in the last of the evening sun, and there’s a knock at the door. Who could it be? It’s obviously your pre-dinner drinks service. Nobu is calling, and this is where your night gets really interesting.

Nobu simply radiates exclusivity. But remember, exclusivity isn’t always a good thing, and it’s annoying when your go-to dining spot is packed out. There are too many privileges for us to list here about being a guest at Nobu Hotel, but one of them is ‘first in line’ access to the restaurant.

Nobu, that kind-of-a-big-deal restaurant sensation, is settling in well in Marbella, with a clientele who demand the best. Chef Nobu Matsuhisa cooks up Japanese dishes with Peruvian flavours, a cooking style that has brought him international success. His signature dish is the black cod miso. Given Marbella’s golden beachfront location, expect plenty of other seafood bites here too. Instagram your food as much as is socially acceptable.

The night continues into the Nobu Lounge with menus of sake and well-crafted cocktails, served with flair by resident mixologist Rodrigo Tartaglia. Your presence at the Nobu Lounge means more exclusive access, this time straight into La Suite, the most refined nightclub on the south coast, and the party continues until the sun comes back up.

Before you know it, you’ll be back on the balcony in your Nobu robe, waiting for the knock on the door and the night to start all over again.

Canada is one of the best countries to move and settle. It really has everything one could look for. From a comfortable lifestyle to quality education and plentiful work opportunities, this country never disappoints. If you are planning to move to Canada, here are a few things you should know about it.

Canada Welcomes Everyone

It is home to millions of immigrants. Canadians like to help people in need; that’s why you will find many Syrian refugees here. They are not the kind of people that despise foreigners in their homes. They welcome everyone with open arms and you will see it in their behavior. You will be surprised seeing how cheerful, kind and polite Canadians are towards newcomers. That’s definitely a great environment to start your new life, surrounded by welcoming and supportive people.

It is a Big Country

Canada is the second biggest country in the world. Even bigger than the United States. Compared to its size, it has a very low population, which makes it a perfect place to live. This could be one of the reasons Canadians are not very strict with their visa policies. If you have a good visa score and some value to offer to this nation, you won’t have any trouble. To learn more about visa, immigration, and citizenship, check out CanadaCIS and consider hiring a qualified immigration consultant to smooth your process and guide you through.

Pack All Your Sweaters

Everyone knows it’s a cold country. But I mean, it’s really really cold. At the beginning, a person not used to such weather will have a hard time adjusting. However, Canadians know how to make the best of every situation. That’s why you will find plenty of ice sports. For example, they are crazy about ice skating. Even in the coldest days, you’ll get to enjoy family time outside, choosing among various outdoors activities that Canada has to offer.

Top Five Countries for Higher Education

Canada is home to some of the world’s top-ranked universities. A degree you acquire from one of its institutes will be recognized and even preferred all around the world. For example, the University of Toronto is ranked twenty-fifth best institute in the world. The quality of education and lifestyle that Canada provides to its students is exemplary. That’s why it stands in line with the USA and UK as one of the five best countries for higher education.

It Has Two Official Languages

It’s mostly known as an English speaking country, and most of its population speaks only English. However, not many know that it has two official languages: English and French. Over seven million people in Canada can speak French. Incroyable, non?

English is a Little Different

We’re gonna go tobogganing today, eh?

Unless you have heard it in a movie or something, you probably didn’t understand this sentence. Canadians use a lot of slangs that only its natives understand. So, there are going to be some confusing conversations at the beginning, but you will get the hang of it with time. Their accent can also cause some confusion. So, you might want to practice some Canadian before you move.

Canada Has an Amazing Healthcare

While in the United States it has been made compulsory to be rich, in order to live a healthy life, Canada demonstrates a different mindset. Unlike its neighbor, it offers a great Medicare system to all its people. It’s not a problem, even if you are poor. The government is there to take care of you. Canadian health care is funded by the government. Yes, they actually use YOUR TAX on YOU instead of buying weapons.

Nicest of People on Earth

Canadians are known for their good manners. They are just as nice as shown in the series How I Met Your Mother. Yes, they love sports and they are not afraid of fights, but they treat everyone with respect. It is said that “Sorry” is the most favorite word of Canadians. While not all five fingers are equal, you will see that their culture promotes only good things, and that matters a great deal.

So Many Beautiful Places

Heard of Niagara Falls? It’s in Canada. There can’t be anything better than living in a country ranked one of the top tourist destinations. Wanderlusters can be forgiven for believing the well beloved islands are the very best Greece has to offer. The mainland is teeming with the ruinous structures of ancient civilisations, hilltop forts and picturesque seaside towns built during the old years of foreign rule. Whether you have a few days to spare before island hopping commences or it’s a city break you’re seeking, we have the ultimate itinerary for experiencing some of the country’s best bits.

Day 1

Arrive at Athens international airport with Aegean airways, who offer regular direct flights from Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester, followed by 31 domestic flights across Greece from Athens if you are looking to hop to an island as part of your trip.

Take a short taxi ride to the heart of Athens’s old town and check in to the A77 Suites by Andronis. Offering a collection of twelve suites, the hotel is an urban sanctuary located in the old town of Plaka, or the Neighborhood of Gods, as locals know it.

Located on number 77 of Adrianou, one of Athens’ most iconic pedestrian streets, the boutique residence is housed in a 19th century, listed building; each suite is eclectically designed to enhance the building’s neoclassical architectural features. Think marble bathroom surfaces, brass features, spacious and airy interiors and fluffy white robes! The hotel is perfectly located to act as a launchpad for exploring the rest of the city on foot while providing a quiet sanctuary after a long day of exploring. Breakfast is served in your room, with guests choosing from traditional English, Mediterranean, Vegan or classic Greek breakfast menus the night before with a full spread delivered to your door at a time of your choosing.

Spend the late afternoon getting acquainted with the winding streets of Plaka, followed by dinner at Ergon House, which blends modern architecture and growing technology (think 25-metre glass atriums, a sprawling vertical orchard, and Greek graffiti murals), with the traditions of a Greek Agora. Bringing together a bakery, coffee house, wine bar, butcher’s stall and deli, guests essentially dine in the midst of an urban cool marketplace!

End the night with cocktails at Couleur Locale for otherworldly views of the Acropolis lit up and glowing above the city. Rooftop DJs and a local scene offer a perfect introduction to the city’s vibrant nightlife.

Day 2

After breakfast, walk through the city to the up-market Kolonaki district for a little TLC at the Apivita Experience Store.

Inspired by the Hippocratic philosophy, Greek nature and the power of aromatherapy, Apivita’s Beehive spa offer a range of holistic treatments inspired by natural be products. The store is a place of total wellbeing, with an in-house juice and smoothie bar, hair salon and a “Nature’s Pharmacy”, where Apivita experts mix and blend fully customized products according to your skin needs.

We opted for an aromatherapy massage where guests can choose their own essential oils (lavender for us!) for 50 minutes of total relaxation. Well-priced (50 EUR) and indulgent, (full treatment list can be found here), we can think of no better way to set ourselves up for a day of exploring the city on foot.

Up next is an authentic “Athens Heart” tour with Be a Greek, a 4-hour private walking tour through the city. This is an ingenious option for anyone privy to aimless wanderings with zero sense of direction, and the addition of an Athenian guide ensures a view of the city from local eyes where hidden treasures, ancient history, and mythology would be lost to those exploring alone. The tour takes you through all the must-see sights in Athens, including the Panathenaic Stadium, The Zappeion and the National Garden, the beautiful Anafiotika neighbourhood and of course culminating at The Acropolis of Athens and the Acropolis Museum (entrance to the ancient site is not included within the tour, but views from the lower outcrops are a sight to behold).

We combined our walking tour with a Dionysian Grapes Wine Tasting experience, where an expert sommelier leads guests through a private tasting session of 8 Greek wines, paired with delicious Greek cheeses, meats and bread. We munched and sipped our way through the afternoon while enjoying a whistle-stop tour through the history of Greek winemaking and the country’s wine regions.

Day 3

Check out of A77 Suites mid-morning and head to the nearby Hertz office to rent a car for the remainder of your trip. No trip to Greece is complete without a trip to the ocean, and the picturesque town of Nafplio offers a beautiful island town feel just 2.5 hours from Athens.

Make sure to stop off at the Archaeological sites of Mycenae Tiryns and roam the ruins of the two greatest cities of the Mycenaean civilisation, dating back to the 12th Century BC, before arriving in Nafplio.

Check in to the Adiandi Boutique Hotel, situated in the heart of old town, 50 meters from the beach and a stone’s throw from the town’s main parking lot. Spend the afternoon exploring the winding cobbled streets, boutiques and eateries set above coloured Venetian style houses with quaint coloured shutters and climbing ivy. Head to the historial “Platia Syntagmatos” (Constitution Square) for wine and gelato in the sun, before heading up the 900 steps of Akronafplia. The Acropolis of the Argolic Gulf was erected by the Venetians and later passed on to the Byzantines and Ottomans. Sat atop a rocky cliff that plunges into the see, those who climb to the top will be rewarded with panoramic views of the ocean and mountains beyond.

Head beyond the historic streets to new town, and dine at Menta restaurant – a contemporary eatery that recreates a traditional Greek kafeneio (coffee house) with a modern touch. The menu is distinctly Mediterranean, blending traditional ingredients with a twist. After dinner, head back to Old Town for an evening abuzz with Taveras and wine bars.

Day 4

Breakfast is hosted in the beautiful Wild Duck restaurant opposite the Adiandi hotel. The interiors are effortlessly chic and modern and the traditional Greek breakfast spread will leave you bursting. Following a Greek coffee and many sweet traditional pastries, check out with your luggage and drive to the beautiful Karathona beach.

Spend a morning with Tribal Kayak – the best way to enjoy the azure waters and coves, which pepper the town’s coastline under the gaze of the Akronafplia. In the summer months, there is plenty of time for snorkelling, swimming and sunbathing to break up the heavy (but rewarding) arm workout.

A few hours spent at sea is thirsty work! Head back to the town for lunch. If you are a sun worshipper like us, there is time for one last ocean swim at Arvanitia Beach – a perfect pebble cove frequented by locals for a daily dip in the clearest blue.

Back on the road; begin the drive back to Athens in the early afternoon, but not before stopping at the Ancient Epidaurus amphitheatre located 35 minutes from Nafplio town. The structure itself is the best-preserved theatre in Greece and a must visit for its sheer impressiveness and hypnotic acoustics.

Arrive at Athens international airport and return the car to the Hertz drop-off centre, conveniently located near the departure gate. Check into the Sofitel Airport hotel just a hop, skip and jump away from the Hertz carpark, for a final night spent in quiet luxury before an early morning flight. The hotel itself is an expansive oasis of complete calm and much needed after a few hours on the road, with an indoor pool area perfect for soaking off the day. We sipped G&Ts at the Artemis bar to unwind before dinner in the hotel’s Instagram worthy restaurant. With a stunning design and some of the best dishes we had tasted during our stay, it’s easy to forget you are at the airport, honestly.

Rest easy, followed by a quick but delicious breakfast buffet before checking out. Cross the street and voila! You’re in the airport, and ready to depart on the next adventure.

Now we know we’re only just edging in to summer and the last thing we want to do is wish away the year after the time we’ve been having lately, but given that this year’s ski season was cut short by a good couple of months you’ll surely forgive the snow bunnies among us for already getting excited at the prospect of hitting the slopes come November and packing in as much piste time as we can over next season. While we may not be travelling right now there’s nothing wrong with planning future trips…

One man who’s undoubtedly already counting down the days until the snow starts to fall again is alpine artist Adam Attew, whose dramatic landscapes are so strikingly realistic you’d be forgiven for thinking they’re photographs. While Attew works from his own photography, each painting is painstakingly recreated and his work instantly transports you to a chilly mountaintop. Childhood visits to the Alps every summer and winter throughout childhood ignited a lifelong passion for the mountains and with BASI Alpine Ski and Telemark instructor qualifications under his belt, Adam’s winters are now spent, accompanied by a sketchbook and camera, ski touring throughout the Alps capturing his experiences and translating them to canvas.

This winter saw Attew spend time in Obergurgl in the Austrian Alps where he took up residence for several days painting live at one of the resorts mountaintop restaurants, as well as hosting a solo exhibition of his work at the brand new Gurgl Carat exhibition centre. We caught up with him in between painting and skiing over a Glühwein to find out more about the multi-talented Alpine action man…

What inspired you to first pick up a paintbrush?

It was such a long time ago during my early years of childhood that I don’t remember, though I do have early memories of Christmas presents consisting of special brushes that held paint in the handles, probably to reduce the mess, though I probably make more mess now! How Santa Claus knew I would be an artist, I have no idea. Clever man.

When did you know you had a talent?

I do remember art teachers at school discussing with my parents that I was drawing detailed people with features, bodies and limbs whereas my friends were still drawing the classic ‘round blob person’; I was obviously driven by detail even back then.

What path led you to painting for a living?

Following my dreams. I owned and ran an animation studio in London and Chicago for about 12 years, but as my role had changed and lost its creativity I no longer enjoyed it. So I packed it in and went in search of what I really enjoyed; skiing , mountains and painting mountains is pretty much what I arrived at. I had been painting mountains as a hobby since 2000, having been a ski instructor for several years, and I was writing for the ski and winter section of TheBespokeBlackBook.com. Clearly I was being drawn back to the mountains again and again. Being a driven and not to mention rather stubborn human, it made sense to follow my passion and make it happen.

How long have you been painting professionally?

It’s difficult to say, as it depends on one’s definition of ‘professional’. I had previously worked with Ray Mears creating art for his business and we released some limited edition prints of Arctic Lapland back in the early noughties; I also took on the odd commission piece over the years. However, I would say that I have been painting full time for the last three years.

Do you have a favourite landscape or location you’ve painted?

Although I am known as an Alpine artist, I love any scene if it is covered in snow and the lighting is spectacular. The Alps are of course my spiritual home, but I feel equally at home in the snows of Scandinavia or Canada.

Painting can obviously be a solitary lifestyle. Do you enjoy your own company or do you sometimes struggle with not having others around?

As much as I love spending time with others I also love my own company. I had so much fun meeting all my fellow mountain lovers from around the world at my recent Artist Residency at the Hohe Mut Alm in Obergurgl, but I also love the solitary time spent painting in my studio listening to music, though it is good to break it up now and again with a cuddle with my partner or a coffee with the cat… or was that the other way around?

A lot of people would use painting as an escape or relaxation, what do you do to relax?

This is why I feel like one of the luckiest people, I can still escape and relax whilst painting, unless the painting is going wrong! Outside painting, I find weight training relaxes me and sets me up for the day, generally being in nature is important and of course any pursuit in the mountain can reset the mind and soul. I discovered the ‘Wim Hof method’ cold water immersion many years ago and as a result now find that cold water immersion is important in my daily routine producing a feeling of well-being… nothing like swimming with Endorphins!

How long do you spend in the mountains each winter?

As much time as I can. Obviously this winter things ended with bit of a sudden bump sadly, but I still managed to spend about 30-40 days on snow in the mountains.

Tell us about a typical day…

I’m not sure that I have typical days anymore. In the winter I spend much of my time reviewing ski resorts, hotels and ski equipment all whilst collecting reference material for my painting through photographing and sketching the mountain landscapes. I intend to take part in more artist residencies in the mountains and more ski touring and sleeping at altitude in the future. When not in the mountains, my days are spent mostly painting, working on my social media or writing reviews.

How long does one of your paintings take?

It really depends on the size, but I would say anywhere between 40 and 140 hours.

What advice would you give to someone scared to pick up a paintbrush?

Don’t worry, brushes don’t bite! As a child we have no fear to give it a go, every child paints…so what happens? Do we become self-conscious or worried about what other people might think? Or perhaps we are scared of failing.

Well….who cares what others think? Just give it a go, make a mess and most of all enjoy it and be proud of your accomplishments.

What does 2020 look like for you since ski season ended early?

It really saddens me that so many Alpine resorts, hotels, businesses and pistes fell totally silent! For me though it was a case of getting back to painting and building my portfolio in readiness for next winter season; I am in talks with various ski resorts concerning my next exhibitions and artist residencies, so watch this space for where to see my work in winter 2020/21.
