Located along the southern edge of the Californian Central Coast is the super scenic, Monterey County.  This beautiful seaside city was made famous by writer, John Steinbeck whose novel, Cannery Row was inspired by the renowned, waterfront thoroughfare lined with former sardine factories that is now home to hotels, shops, and restaurants.

What makes Monterey worth a visit is the plethora of things to do.   Whether you are looking for adventure, want to explore the local marine life, enjoy a taste of the local wine or kick back with a book on the beach there is something for everyone.

Just further along Highway 1 (which reopens in April) is the neighbouring town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, a charming picture postcard destination that packs some punch for its size.

Carmel’s romantic cobblestone streets are brimming with art galleries, great places to eat and boutique shops.  The main stretch of road runs from downtown directly to the sugar-white beach.  The town is jam packed with culture, unique backstories and film buffs will also be excited to discover that Clint Eastwood who served as mayor of Carmel resides here, and is often seen dining in Michelin Starred, Aubergine restaurant.

One of the best times to visit is towards the end of summer. It’s less crowded and you can still expect balmy weather.  Start in Carmel before exploring Monterey Bay and the surrounding area.

Where to stay

Just a stone’s throw from the beach and a short stroll from the shops and restaurants, is the Carmel Beach Hotel.  The hotel opened in 2023 and is one of six new boutique hotels in the town.  The vibe here is laid back luxury, this intimate property has just 26 rooms and three suites.  My room was contemporary and spacious, with fresh whitewashed walls and bedding with accents of marine blue taking inspiration from the ocean.  The large bathrooms comprise of double vanity units, shower and a free-standing roll top bath.  There’s a pretty courtyard restaurant, cocktail bar, spa and gym.  The staff are friendly and deliver a personal seamless service you don’t get from big faceless chains.  During my stay I was running late for a dinner reservation and the manager personally drove me to a local restaurant.

The breakfast here is fabulous, both mornings I had it delivered to my room.  A cute basket of continental delights are served alongside your preferred hot dish.  The eggs were cooked to perfection, toast still warm and bacon crispy.

The location makes it ideal for sunset walks and picnics on the beach.

The Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa sits on stilts directly above the crashing surf of the Pacific and in the prime location of Cannery Row.  The hotel is plush with lots of polished marble, soft carpet, dark wood and large ceiling to floor windows that look out over the bay.  The rooms are spacious and have a similar classic design and décor that continues throughout the hotel.

When it comes to dining you are spoiled for choice.  There’s lobby café’s, excellent room service and for more casual cuisine guest can head to Schooners, there’s a heated deck and uninterrupted views of the ocean.   The menu includes classic American staples making it the perfect choice for breakfast or a light bite. Coastal Kitchen offers fine dining.  Executive Chef Michael Rotondo serves an ever-evolving tasting menu that showcases the culinary treasures from the region.

The adult only spa is decadent retreat for those looking to relax after a day exploring.  Located on the roof, with dramatic panoramic views from the sundeck, there are two outdoor hot tubs, a steam room and indoor sauna. There is also a gym.

Eat and drink

Chez Noir’s French inspired menu showcases innovative, seafood-centric dishes that have earned them a well-deserved Michelin star.  The menu boasts a fusion of flavours, from tantalizing appetizers to decadent desserts. Highlights include their perfectly seared scallops and the melt-in-your-mouth chocolate fondant. The staff’s knowledge and passion for each dish add a personal touch, making Chez Noir a must-visit for those who appreciate culinary artistry.

Lucia restaurant at Bernardus Lodge and Spa is nothing short of spectacular.  Situated in the Carmel Valley it’s nestled on the grounds of rolling vineyards, olive orchards and 28 acres of fragrant lavender.  With beautiful vistas, tables at Lucia are sought after.  Slick service and a menu dedicated to delicious farm to table fare is what sets Lucia apart from other restaurants.  The wood brick pizzas are divine, the seasonal salads are served like a work of art and the larger plates source prime cuts of meat and market fish. Choose from a selection of wines from the Bernardus vineyard to accompany your meal.

For a seafood feast that celebrates the bounty of the ocean, Salt Wood Kitchen & Oysterette is the place to be. This award-winning upscale seafood restaurant is a short drive from Monterey Bay, and exudes coastal charm with a menu that pays homage to the region’s maritime heritage. The raw bar is a standout, featuring an array of oysters and an abundance of seafood. The wood-fired grill adds a smoky richness to dishes like the grilled octopus and honey glazed duck. The casual yet sophisticated atmosphere, coupled with the welcoming staff, makes Salt Wood Kitchen & Oysterette a go-to spot for those craving a seafood extravaganza.

What to do

While staying in Monterey you must pay a visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium who are celebrating their 40th anniversary in October.  Here, you can see leopard sharks meander through kelp forests and sea turtles bobbing amongst schools of colourful fish.  Floor to ceiling tanks span two floors at one of the largest aquarium exhibits in the world.  There are interactive experiences, a variety of behind-the-scenes tours (some of which allow visitors to feed penguins) and touch pools, where you can get close to sea cucumbers, bat rays and tide-pool creatures.  This is no run of the mill aquarium, and it’s easy to see why it’s one of the biggest tourist attractions in the region, it showcases more than 35,000 animals and plants representing over 550 species.

Embark on a wine adventure like no other with Kombi Wine Tours, where vintage style meets exquisite vintages. Board the classic VW Kombi, ‘Sweet Pickle’ and journey through the scenic vineyards and wineries of Monterey, indulging in a curated selection of wines from the region. You’ll be collected from your hotel by their knowledgeable guide, Steve who will keep you entertained with the inside track on all things Monterey.  Expect to stop off at some of the finest wineries along the coast, make sure you call in to Galante Vineyards tasting room to see Jack!

Monterey Bay is California’s best location for viewing whales, great white sharks and spotting an abundance of marine life including dolphins, jellyfish and sea lions.  Discovery Whale Watch trips depart from Fisherman’s Wharf daily and the team onboard are the best in business for spotting and guaranteeing whale sightings.   The three-hour tour is an extraordinary experience that allows you to get up close to these amazing creatures, I got to witness a humpback breech and a pod of dolphins escorted our boat out of the bay.   Throughout the trip the crew tee up sightings, impart knowledge and facts with passion, ensuring you have a memorable experience.

If tasked with finding someone who loves Switzerland more than our Editor in Chief does, you’d be searching for quite a while. With 12 visits to the country already, Laura Bartlett’s passion for exploring Switzerland shows no signs of waning. Each visit presents something new, and her latest adventure was no exception. During her three-day stay at Hotel Adula in Flims, Laax, Laura immersed herself in a magical experience, solidifying Switzerland’s position as her top favourite destination. Here’s her lowdown…

Each time I board a flight bound for Switzerland, I find myself contemplating whether it might be my final visit to the country. I question whether my love affair with Switzerland might eventually fade, if I’ll reach a point where I feel I’ve explored all it has to offer.

Yet, the moment the plane touches down on the runway, with the majestic view of the Swiss Alps surrounding me, I quickly dismiss those ludicrous thoughts. It becomes clear to me that this could never be the end of my journey here. There is something that lures me back time and time again and honestly, I’m not mad about it!

Touching down at Zurich airport, I embarked on a journey that always manages to take my breath away. Jumping aboard a couple of seamless trains, I ventured through the picturesque Swiss countryside, bound for Chur because it really is about the journey and not just the destination.

While some folks swear by therapy, for me, Switzerland is my ultimate soul-soother. There’s something about the crisp mountain air and the serene beauty of the landscape that instantly hits the reset button on my soul. And let me tell you, this trip promised to be no exception to the rule.

Checking in

This time, I found myself headed back to the enchanting area of Flims, Laax – a place that seems to beckon me with its irresistible charm every time. Checking in to Hotel Adula, I was all set in my oasis of wellbeing in the heart of Flims ready for three days to disconnect from the world, unplug from technology and reconnect with myself and nature. Aka, pure bliss.

Ah, Hotel Adula, where history meets hospitality in the heart of the Grisons mountain landscape! As someone who never quite fancied themselves a history buff, I was unexpectedly captivated by the rich tapestry woven into the very walls of this 140-year-old gem.

Nestled on the sunny (or snowy) slope of Flims, this charming establishment has been extending its warm Swiss welcome for over a century. With 93 spacious rooms and suites, 2 tantalising restaurants (I’ll get to them later), a lounge and bar beckoning with tales of laughter and camaraderie, and not to forget, their weekly DJ who offers nothing but good vibes and great beats.

Where it all began

But let’s rewind to where it all began, shall we?

In the quaint year of 1890, the Kurhaus Adula, as it was then known, opened its doors to the first wave of curious travellers seeking respite in the summer months. Back then, it was all about basking in the warmth of the season. But oh, how swiftly the tides of demand changed with the advent of winter sports and the lure of adventure! Soon, the clinking of skis and the laughter of snow enthusiasts echoed through the corridors.

Fast forward to 1939, and guests were still being whisked up the mountain on transport sledges. Can you imagine the thrill of that journey? By 1945, the pioneering spirit of the region reached new heights with the inauguration of the first detachable chairlift from Flims to Foppa – a game-changer in the world of alpine exploration.

But the Hotel Adula didn’t just witness history; it played an integral role in shaping it. With each passing year, the main building expanded, evolving to meet the ever-growing demands of its discerning guests.

Right up to this very moment, the Hotel Adula has stood as an emblem of enduring grace and unmatched quality. With their most recent refurbishment sparking whispers of further enhancements on the horizon, it’s clear that they’re not just keeping up with the times but setting the pace in their industry.

The Rooms

My first two nights were spent in the cosy comfort of a Lodge Room, which was already magical enough. However, it was my final night in the 1001 Steilas suite that truly stole the show, transforming this already stellar 4-star hotel into a celestial oasis. This truly takes glamping to a whole new level.

As I awoke from a night of blissful slumber, with a gentle tug on the canopy, I pulled it back, revealing a sight that left me breathless.

Before me stretched an awe-inspiring panorama of mountains bathed in the soft hues of dawn. The sun, a golden orb rising majestically over the horizon, cast its radiant glow upon the snow-capped peaks, painting the sky with a palette of colours so vivid and vibrant that it seemed almost surreal.

In that moment, as I stood transfixed by the sheer magnificence of nature’s canvas unfolding before me, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude and awe wash over me. It was a sunrise unlike any I had ever witnessed before – a dance of light and colour that seemed to tip toe across the sky, filling me with a profound sense of wonder and reverence for the world around me.

As I lingered there, basking in the warmth of the morning sun and drinking in the breathtaking beauty of the mountains, I knew that this was a moment I would carry with me always. It was a reminder of the incredible power and majesty of the natural world, and a testament to the transformative magic of Hotel Adula’s 1001 Steilas suite. Gosh, let me tell you, it was an experience that went way beyond the usual hotel stay and etched itself right into my heart and soul.

Where to eat

At Hotel Adula, dining isn’t just about filling your belly – it’s a journey for your taste buds that spans continents! With two exquisite restaurants to choose from, you’ll embark on a culinary adventure that will leave you craving more.

As someone who was dining solo, I was enthralled by the endless books on the shelves throughout Adula Kitchen and bar, giving me something to read in between my moments of people watching. The restaurant gives off a ‘home away from home’ vibe and you can’t help but relax like you’re in the comfort of your own living room. The only thing missing were my slippers!

(Top tip, order the affogato. It’s not officially on the menu but if you ask the team nicely they will whisk up their own concoction of my favourite dessert. Thank me later.)

Now, let’s shift our focus to La Muña – a place where Japanese and Peruvian cuisine come together in a delightful fusion of flavours. Prepare your taste buds for a mouthwatering journey like no other as diverse ingredients from Europe meld seamlessly with Japanese and Peruvian techniques.

From delicate ceviche to mouthwatering teriyaki beef tenderloin infused with truffles, each dish is a work of art designed for sharing (whatever sharing means). And the name? It’s inspired by a Peruvian plant known for alleviating altitude sickness – a fitting tribute to the adventurous spirit that permeates every bite.

Nab the table near the crackling open fire, and you’re all set for a delightfully cosy evening, with prime viewing of the chef in action in the open kitchen. Witness with awe as the chef works his culinary sorcery, turning basic ingredients into gastronomic masterpieces right before your very eyes.

Location, location, location

Hotel Adula could not have a better location if they tried. Flims is like Mother Nature’s treasure chest, bursting with wonders waiting to be discovered and everything is within walking distance from the hotel. One of the wonders is Lake Caumasee, the crown jewel of Flims, also known as ‘Lag la Cauma’ in the charming Romansh tongue, which translates to the whimsical ‘lake siesta’.

Whether you’re up for a splash, a chill-out session, or catching some rays, this stunning lake has got you covered! If you’re strolling on foot or pedalling away on your bike, a pit stop at this majestic oasis is an absolute must for your itinerary. The lake is surrounded by lush forest on three sides, with a cosy wooded island smack bang in the middle, where tranquility reigns supreme.

During my evening meal on my final night, one of the staff members, Branko Čavić, regaled me with tales of early morning swims in the pristine lake. His enthusiasm was contagious, and despite the chilly prospect of snow, I found myself agreeing to the adventure. The next morning, as the sun timidly peeked over the horizon, I plunged into the icy waters, the snowflakes dancing around me like delicate ballerinas. It was a surreal moment, one that will stay with me forever.

Branko’s infectious spirit and his insistence on seizing the moment turned an ordinary day into an extraordinary adventure, reminding me of the magic that happens when we embrace the unexpected.

It also reiterated my love for travel, knowing that exploring new destinations opens up the possibility to meet people from all walks of life, fostering connections and enriching experiences that I wouldn’t have encountered otherwise.

So ‘proscht’ to Branko, the unsung hero of my Swiss escapade, for making my visit truly special and unforgettable.

What I experienced in my three days at Hotel Adula was more than just a fleeting moment – it’s a testament to the enduring allure of this remarkable hotel. And as I bid adieu to this slice of heaven on earth, I knew one thing for sure: my love affair with the Hotel Adula had only just begun.

Kintsugi is a new global wellness brand, drawing inspiration from the ancient Japanese art of repairing ceramics with gold and with the intention to raise frequencies for increased joyful and healthy lives. The first Kintsugi Space launched in Al Reem Island, Abu Dhabi, in November 2023, an entirely new concept for the destination. This will be followed by online membership and the launch of the lifestyle product line in 2024 and other exciting spaces internationally.

To experience the magic of Kintsugi first-hand, Team Coco’ very own Hannah Tan-Gillies ventured into bustling Charlotte Street to get a taste of what the innovative wellness concept has to offer.

Kintsugi, led by the gentle genius of acclaimed spa creative Patrizia Bortolin is all about inspiring people to embrace their imperfections, while being surrounded in a new kind of luxury. During the London event, Patrizia, who is also the founder of the Glowing Flow Spa Consultancy, was recognised by The New York Times for her work at Preidlhof Luxury DolceVita Retreat* and celebrated by Conde Nast Traveller as creating the ‘Best Life Changing Spa Experience’.

She brings all this goodness to the Kintsugi experience, which adeptly combines ancient Eastern healing techniques with modern Western methodologies based on a holistic approach of wellness using innovative Quantum Healing methods.

What is Quantum Healing you say? Well it is an ethos that is based on the premise that our thoughts and intentions can have a powerful influence on our health and wellbeing, to bring the body and mind into a state of balance and harmony. It involves the application of quantum principles to a holistic, integrated wellbeing approach. At its core, it leverages the idea that particles exhibit both wave and energy properties in the human body and when this energy is in equilibrium, the body can heal itself.

Patrizia leads a team of experts including celebrity Facialist Anastasia Achielleos who is a Kintsugi Wellness Community Ambassador focused on fascial wellness and high consciousness. She is also joined by famed Italian architect Emanuela Beneneddeti who created the Kintsugi space in Al Reem Island, Abu Dhabi.

The Kintsugi method guides its members towards a new, higher frequency where life feels more joyful and nourishing. Laughing and crying are both welcome, a celebration of the body is encouraged through dancing, massage, community and purifying. It also stimulates the mind to create healthy routines, change perspectives, think less and observe more, care for details and rituals and appreciate the beauty all around.

Situated on the sought after Al Reem Island in Abu Dhabi, the seven-floor pale pink building houses a wellness space exclusively for female members (unlike other aspects of the brand which are open to all). In addition to 3, 6 and 11 months membership options, there is also a six-day retreat offering, with membership existing for the duration of the programme, as well as an international membership for four days a year*. Kintsugi partners with Ember Lifestyle Travel for all arrangements to ensure an unforgettable and seamless wellness retreat.

Shutters on the Beach or ‘Shutters’ as coined by its nearest and dearest marries the elegance and charm of an East Coast beach house with the laid back energy of its West Coast surroundings. A perfect blend of interiors that wouldn’t look out of place on the Cape with a view that takes in the Santa Monica pier and beyond, a stunning contrast of old meets new.

Setting the scene

Beginning a trip up the Californian coastline, the iconic Shutters Hotel – named on account of its multitude of rooms boasting white wooden shutter doors that open onto sun drenched balconies with views of the ocean – seemed like the perfect starting point. Having had it saved on my ‘one day I will stay here’ list for a number of years, I was beside myself to see if she was as beautiful in the flesh as the many influencers and socialites depicted her across social media.

Pulling into the valet of the hotel, eyes already on stalks at glimpses of the iconic white woodwork and the blue ocean beyond, I felt as if I were entering another world, one of luxury, slow paced living and five star hospitality. Having spent the previous night in a very cool yet incredibly urban (think blocks of raw concrete in the middle of bedroom) hotel in downtown LA, this was the exact contrast I needed. Scooting around important media types who were taking important phone calls on the terrace, I entered into the lobby of the hotel, this couldn’t be further from the brash brutalism of the night before. Dark wood floors draped in exquisite rugs, roaring fires, sofas that invite you to fall into them and wood paneling and low lighting that created an ambience of being in your friend’s (albeit a very wealthy one) living room, which I later found out is what the hotel refers to the lobby as given its relaxed nature and palpable warmth.

The room

I mosied my way through the lobby, people watching on route, finding my way to my room, a further extension of the aforementioned friends’ Cape Cod home. Curated books and artwork line the shelves, accents of blue to mirror the ocean a mere few meters away bring the outside in, hardwood floors adorned with Tibetan rugs, soft billowy comforters placed on top of luxurious linen sheets create an extra layer of cosines. Well thought out details such as an elevated mini bar and a couples kit show why this hotel is considered one of the best in the area.

A huge bathroom housing a whirlpool tub and flat screen TV sits beneath shutters opening into the room allowing for the most romantic of evenings and outdoor views. Touches such as Dyptique shower products mean you will smell as expensive as the hotel itself.

As eager as I was to jump on the enormous bed that needed a step ladder to go with it, I was even more eager to throw open the iconic white shutters open and see what lay beyond – as natural light flooded the room, the breeze of the Pacific whipped around me, I squealed at the miles of white sandy beach back dropped by the Santa Monica pier stretched out in front of me.

This is where things got tricky – with only 24 hours to take in this incredible place, how is one to choose between lounging at the roof top pool that boasts some of the most incredible views across Santa Monica beach, ambling up the Venice boardwalk, running straight into the ocean or sipping a cocktail at one of the hotels stunning bars. You need a good few days to drink this all up.

Opting for a walk along the beach to settle into our new surroundings, this is where the hotel came into its own. As I walked down to the soft white sand, waves crashing ahead, I turned to see where we had come from. The majesty of the hotel proudly opening itself up to the beach below genuinely took my breath away.

Bars & Restaurants

The hotel has three F&B offerings, 1 Pico the more formal of the family draws influences from Italian menus and is a seafood forward menu – perfect as the restaurant boasts even more views across the ocean. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, this is the place to head for some Coastal Californian dining at its finest.

Coast is the more laid back of the bunch, the perfect place to head for breakfast after a spot of morning yoga (more on that later) for great eggs and the most beautiful chia pudding I have ever seen. Outdoor seating is right on the boardwalk so prepare to watch the world go by as you sip your morning cup of Joe, we were even treated to some top notch busking on our visit. There is also a communal table inside, further cementing the laid back family dining vibe.

Lastly, the Living Room, redefining hotel lobbies for its guests – a meeting place, a spot to have a cocktail or a coffee, somewhere to read in front of the fire or enjoy live music in the evening. Sipping a Pina Colada on the Living Room balcony, I was treated to one of the most epic sunsets as I have ever seen, as the sun slips behind the Santa Monica pier, the bar comes to life, cocktail shakers shake, guests congregate for supper, the energy is bustly yet refined, the perfect spot to start your evening – or any other part of the day for that matter.

The pool

The pool at Shutters is nothing short of iconic. Sitting atop the roof terrace and stretching nearly the entire length of the hotel, it is flanked by cabanas and sun loungers alike, all boasting the striking white and blue colour palette like a precisely turned out army.  If you can get there early doors to secure a front row lounger with uninterrupted views of the beach below, even better but truth be told, there isn’t a bad spot here.

The beach

Santa Monica beach is known for surfing, volleyball and beautiful people. The beach concierge team is on hand to provide you with anything you might need, from parasols to bicycles. The hotel also offers beach fitness and yoga classes. Booking on to the latter the following morning as I really tried to lean into this California way of life, when my alarm rang bright and early, I was more than a little tempted to hit cancel and roll back into my memory foam supported slumber. However, a promise had been made and so I  heaved myself out of bed and onto the beach. Toes buried in the sand still cold from the night before, waves crashed, sun warmed my skin, occasional dogs ran past in a blur and surfers could be heard discussing whatever it is surfers discuss – it was truly a special moment, as the mist rolled in off the ocean and the rest of the world was near still, there was something ethereal about breathing in tandem with the ocean. I would urge anyone to do it.

Surrounding area.

If you can drag yourself away from the hotel (near impossible but doable), walk up the boardwalk to Venice Beach which is a lovely way to spend a day. More people watching, lots of coffee sipping, oodles of shopping. A turn around the Venice canals and some serious properly lusting is an absolute must. Walk back down Abbot Kinney, a street full of independents and the chicest stores. From here we grabbed a cab back to the hotel but the walk is pleasant and takes about an hour.

Of course, no stay here is complete without a turn around the pier – we found the best way to do it was tipsy from our cocktails, laughing our way across the beach and up on to the ferris wheel complete with candy corn and corn dog. Perfection.

I can happily confirm that Shutter’s is just as beautiful as I had been led to believe and what those little squares on instagram don’t depict is the level of service and hospitality of everyone that works here. You truly are made to feel like you are entering a home to share with the friendliest of families.

With the demands of the digital world forever forcing their way in to our lives, we are all craving time away from our devices more than ever. Where better to get away from the noise of online than a night at Hoar Cross Hall. Nestled within thousands of acres of Staffordshire countryside, our Editor in Chief Laura Bartlett explored…

Nothing says ‘perfect girls day out’ more than a visit to the spa. Especially if the spa on your hit list is Hoar Cross Hall. This puts most spas in the UK to shame, think of a spa you have visited that has the most facilities and then times that by ten and you won’t even come close to what Hoar Cross Hall has to offer.

The minute I drove in to their driveway, which is glistening with fairy lights, I knew we were in for a treat. I was visiting with our Interiors Editor Siobhan Murphy and there’s always one guarantee when we are together and that is lots of giggles. They don’t call us the cackling fish wives for nothing!

We arrived late afternoon and we headed straight to our room to get ready for dinner. I say room, it was so big I wouldn’t have been surprised if it had its own postcode. Think two floors, landing area, chandelier, two beds and an entire rooftop area with a hot tub. That’s before you even step foot in to the bathroom. Sign me up!

After snapping a few photos in our not so humble abode, we headed down to The Ballroom for dinner. Now we could have easily been mistaken for being on board the Titanic because this room was so grand, it definitely felt like something out of a movie scene. Fortunately, it was less sink and more swim when it came to this dining experience though. The AA Rosette-awarded restaurant has well and truly earned their stripes. The treacle cured ham with yuzu curd is a winner all day long and you’ll not get food envy if you follow that up with the breast of Staffordshire chicken because the chorizo crumb with charred corn, tender stem and gnocchi will have you wanting seconds.

We skipped out on dessert because you know, self control and all that. Instead, we headed back to our suite and laughed our heads off with a private hot tub party for two. There was a robotic owl perched on the ledge which added an element of surprise slash fear so don’t say I didn’t warn you!

After laughing our way in to the night we were well and truly tucked up and in bed by 11pm like the adults that we are, the earlier to bed then the earlier to rise and enjoy the facilities, that’s my motto. I was up bright eyed and bushy tailed (quite like the owl from the night before) and in the gym by 7am. I’ve seen a lot of hotel gyms in my time but very few that offer what Hoar Cross Hall does. It has every machine you can imagine and I was very quickly reminded that the devil is real and he’s called the StairMaster.

Workout complete, Siobhan came to join me and we headed for breakfast before spending the rest of the day like a pair of sloths moving through the spa at the slowest possible pace so that we could savour every moment.

This is a spa on steroids, it’s an adults playground and the ultimate destination to disappear from the world and cater to all of your senses. From the sights of the tranquil Sanctum, to the smells of the spa shop selling Elemis products, the touch of the water in the saltwater pools and the taste of the food across their different restaurants. I am not exaggerating when I say that you could spend an entire week here and still discover something new. After having our treatments (one word, divine), we hung out in the Snooze Room before whiling away the entire afternoon in a constant state of zen.

The entire 24 hour experience was truly faultless. The staff were all super pleasant and helpful, the facilities were endless, the food was delectable and I guess the company wasn’t bad either!

When it comes to spa hotels, Hoar Cross Hall is the GOAT! The only problem is, if you stay here, one night just isn’t enough.

Hoar Cross Hall is an award-winning Hotel and Spa located in rural Staffordshire. Set within 43 acres of beautiful English countryside, the hotel boasts one of the largest state-of-the-art spas in Europe, 104 stylish suites and bedrooms, spectacular grounds, and decadent dining at its AA Rosette-awarded restaurant, The Ballroom.

From £139 per person, bookings for Dinner, Bed and Breakfast can be made here.

When you think of the Maldives, what comes to mind? Crystal-clear waters, pristine white sand beaches, and overwater bungalows perfectly tailored for romantic getaways, right? While it’s true that the Maldives has long been synonymous with honeymooners and couples seeking a romantic escape, there’s so much more to this tropical paradise than meets the eye.

While it’s great for relaxing and taking time out, each resort has unique experiences to spark your sense of adventure, stoke your senses and light your imagination.   Two resorts that excel in personalised experiences and deliver in abundance are Gili Lankanfushi and Six Senses Laamu.  Both resorts serve up lashings of luxury, plum sunsets, pink skies and azure waters but what sets them apart from their Maldivian neighbours is the exceptional experiences.  Here’s my favourite things to do in the Maldives.

Discover an underwater world at Six Senses Laamu

One of the things that sets Six Senses Laamu apart from the other resorts is the spectacular house reef that hugs the edge of the island, coupled with a state-of-the-art immersive research facility and you have a unique marine experience that lets you take a deep dive into ocean life.

The Maldives Underwater Initiative (MUI) by Six Senses Laamu is a collaboration of marine biologists from the resort and three partnered NGOs; the Manta Trust, Blue Marine Foundation and the Olive Ridley Project. The Sea Hub of Environmental Learning in Laamu (SHELL), home to MUI, is a stunning visual and interactive experience that showcases the marine environment.  Here a cool team of marine biologists conduct innovative research in the lab facilities and take guests on an extraordinary journey into the ocean.  This awesome facility wouldn’t look out of place at the Science Museum.  Full sized manta’s hang from the ceiling, while a series of dedicated informative stations are dotted around, jam packed with fun facts and statistics on the mysteries of the ocean and those who inhabit it.

The SHELL is home to an interactive room designed for guests to discover the secrets of Laamu and the underwater world. Highlights include an augmented reality sandbox which allows you to change and redesign habitats and topography using projection mapping technology. There’s a nifty little piece of animation kit that lets you get creative and watch your favourite marine creatures come alive on a large screen and watch them swim in a virtual world.  I came away with a plethora of facts and a better understanding of the ocean.

Following some time exploring the SHELL you can get up close and personal with sharks, parrotfish and green turtles at the house reef.  Private tours are available for beginners as well as seasoned divers and snorkelers.

The coral reefs of the Laamu atoll are rich in colour and brimming with marine life. I took a snorkel tour with the resident marine biologist who knows all the best spots along the reef to get a glimpse of Nemo and the impressive eagle rays.  I spent over an hour exploring the stunning coral garden coming face to face with oriental sweetlips, a moray eel, schools of needlefish and pretty Moorish idols.  It’s easy to get lost in this breathtaking world.

Whether you are a marine enthusiast or a novice, I’ll guarantee you’ll quickly fall in love with the ocean and this is without a doubt the most impressive snorkelling sites of the atoll.

Upon arrival at Gili Lankanfushi you are assigned your own Mr Friday, a dedicated butler service to ensure that your stay and experience is second to none.  I can vouch that this is very much the case, with my Mr Friday going above and beyond to make sure my stay was nothing short of incredible, recommending a series of unique experiences to enhance your stay.  My Mr Friday arranged for a slice of movie magic under the stars, a fantastic way to spend an evening.  Nestled in the middle of the island ensconced in your own private leafy jungle is an outdoor cinema like no other.  Ahead of my private screening I got to request my movie of choice and select from a mouthwatering barbeque menu.  This wasn’t your run of the mill burger and sausage menu, instead it comprised of succulent lobster and fresh seafood with wagyu beef and premium cuts of meat, accompanied by delicious sides and salads.

After drinks on the beach watching the sun go down, I was whisked to a quiet nook of the island where flanked by tress and foliage was the most fabulous outdoor cinema.  I was greeted with a glass of champagne while a private chef was getting to work on dinner discreetly in the corner.  The set up was nothing short of spectacular.  A large screen played out an action-packed Denzel Washington movie while my date and I were served starters, and our champagne was topped up at an intimate candle lit dining table.  After our main course we retreated to a cosy lounge area, with reclining beds and blankets.  Here we sipped more champagne, indulged in a delicious chocolate treat for dessert and enjoyed the rest of the movie.

Be warned, once you experience the private jungle cinema at Gili, popcorn and a slushy at the local Odeon just won’t cut it.  It has ruined the regular cinema experience for me!

LESSON ONE: SPANKING AND BEYOND – WEDS 6TH MARCH

In the first of the season of events – Spanking and Beyond – which will take place on Weds 6th March, Sophie will introduce curious singles and couples to corporal punishment for sexual pleasure.

In this intimate setting, couples and singles will learn how – far from being entirely about pain or humiliation – spanking when done properly between two consenting partners can be intensely pleasurable, stimulating the nerve endings in the skin, releasing endorphins and adrenaline, and creating a sense of connection and trust with your partner. They will learn how pleasurable pain can enhance the arousal and excitement of sexual activities, as well as provide a sense of dominance and submission, which many people find erotic as part of their sexual adventures.

At the event a small group of guests of no more than 10 couples (singles are also welcome!) will be welcomed with a glass of bubbles.

This will be followed by a demo with a live model, as Sophie demonstrates how to warm someone up, use a hand to spank, use a flogger, paddle, riding crop and cane. Guests will then be invited to learn, and depending on their personal preference, couples can practice on each other and singles can try spanking on the model or experience being spanked by Sophie.

Time will be set aside for questions allowing people to leave the sessions, fully confident in their new-found skillset.

If you’re looking for a hotel in central Stratford-Upon Avon that goes the extra mile, Hotel Indigo is a boutique option with some fantastic extras. Lauren Kate Hughes checks in for the weekend…

Living in London, I’m used to paying premium prices for hotels – and sometimes ones that don’t seem worth the price tag at all. So it’s refreshing to find a hotel in such a sought-after destination that over-delivers on its affordable price tag, with attractive extras like the free-of-charge mini-bar full of snacks and soft drinks, as well as a mini bottle of prosecco for a celebratory touch.

There’s also the acclaimed on-site restaurant The Woodsman, which is well worth a visit. Chef Mike Robinson works with local estates, food producers and foragers to craft his game-based menu. It’s exactly the kind of comfort food you crave in an old-world pub on a cold winter’s night, washed down with an excellent wine choice from our waiter. The staff were knowledgeable and attentive; I couldn’t fault the choices. This is a restaurant where every last detail has been considered. And, with its low ceilings and roaring fires, it’s a particularly cosy place to go in the winter.

What makes the flavours so distinctive at the Woodsman is that the meat is cooked over oak and alder wood for a deliciously smokey finish. Its reputation speaks for itself, with the venue packed out on a Saturday night. Staying at the hotel, you don’t even need to leave the building to reach this much-coveted spot – and you can enjoy a drink in the adjoining cocktail bar beforehand, too.

Breakfast is also worth mentioning, with a huge buffet packed with fresh fruit, juices, cereal, pastries and cakes, as well as a hot breakfast option included in the price. One of the better hotel breakfasts I’ve tried in a long time (and that’s coming from a frequent hotel visitor).

There’s also free parking available on sight for guests – a rarity for such a central hotel and a great asset when it comes to exploring the local area. If you do want to see the area on foot and leave the car safely tucked away, the front-of-house staff offer a map of the local area as well as advice on some local walks.

The rooms are also very spacious, with big, comfy beds ideal for hunkering down after a packed day’s sightseeing. Rooms fall into three categories of design; Tudor, Georgian, and Contemporary.

The bathrooms are fully stocked with aromatic toiletries that add that extra sense of luxury to a weekend away. Each of the rooms also comes with a Nespresso coffee machine, a kettle, mini-fridge, iron and ironing board, a hairdryer, a 40-inch flat-screen TV, and Wi-Fi – essentially anything you might need to stay comfortable and connected during your stay.

There’s so much to do on your doorstep, with the hotel right in the middle of the small 14km town – you’re just a five-minute walk away from the Royal Shakespeare Company itself. You can also pay a visit to where the women in Shakespeare’s life – Anne Hathaway’s Cottage and Shakespeare’s mother, Mary Arden’s, Farm are two must-dos on your Stratford list.

Food and drink at Amano

Penelope’s

An Israeli-Spanish fusion restaurant, Penelope’s serves up innovative dishes for its diners. With an extensive cocktail and wine list, the premium plates we recommend would have to include the nduja pork belly and the black challa calamari (this might be the tastiest calamari we’ve had in London). The beef short rib is an excellent main course – while the ‘seafood on fire’ makes for an impressive dish if you’re looking for some dinner theatre.

Penelope’s at Hotel Amano offers dinner and a show

Speaking of dinner and a show, Penelope’s is known for its sophisticated decor, which provides a glamorous ambience. As well as contemporary dishes, the dining experience itself is immersive – particularly come the weekend, when the restaurant hosts its famous Isramani nights. You’ve not been to a dinner party like it, with sparkler-garnished cocktails, shots straight from the bottle and belly dancers galore.

Amano Rooftop Bar

London knows a thing or two about a rooftop bar – and the terrace at Hotel Amano Covent Garden offers a gorgeous skyline view as you sit back and sip a cocktail. A unique panorama of the city, it’s the perfect place for an aperitif or post-dinner drinks. For anyone who needs a snack with their drink (our hands are raised), there’s a selection of bar bites available (coming from the kitchen at Penelope’s) so you can enjoy that gorgeous black challah calamari alongside your cocktail.

Hotel Amano also has a hidden rooftop terrace bar

Overall, Hotel Amano is perfectly-located the for typical tourist or traveller visiting London. In the heart of the West End, the hotel is just a five-minute walk from Covent Garden tube station (seven minutes from Holborn and 10 minutes from Temple). In addition to good transport links, guests will find themselves literally nextdoor to attractions such as the Lyceum Theatre, the Royal Opera House, London Transport Museum and a short stroll from Leicester Square. If Penelope’s isn’t the preferred dining choice, guests are spoiled for choice with restaurants and bars in the West End.

The hotel is a small boutique style – so if you’re looking for somewhere with a spa, gym and the whole works, Hotel Amano might not be for you. However, what this hotel does deliver is gorgeous decor, comfortable beds in stylish rooms, good food and a rooftop bar – on the doorstep of one of the most popular areas of London. So, what are you waiting for?

Join Laura Bartlett as she explores a reggae-infused retreat at Landal Dylan Coastal Resort, Wales…

As the weekend sun dipped below the horizon, my friends and I arrived at Landal Dylan Coastal Resort in Wales, eager to indulge in a unique escape. Our Friday night kicked off with a soulful reggae welcome at Milk Wood House’s restaurant, where a talented singer serenaded us as we enjoyed a sumptuous dinner.

The ambiance was set against a backdrop of a serene sunset, casting a warm glow over our first night. The restaurant and bar boast stunning views of the River Taf, making our delightful meal even more memorable.

Our lodge at Landal Dylan Coastal Resort was nothing short of spectacular. The well-lit, modern lodge provided breathtaking views from both the private terrace and hot tub. Fully equipped for self-sufficiency, they ensured optimum comfort throughout our stay.

Being a teetotaller, I was pleasantly surprised when my friends decided to embrace the spirit of our Welsh retreat by opting for 0% fizz, effortlessly aligning with my sober preferences. With our glasses filled with the non-alcoholic effervescence, we embarked on a journey into the enchanting night.

Our chosen post dinner haven for the evening was the open-air hot tub, strategically positioned to provide a front-row seat to the celestial spectacle above. Under the moon’s gentle glow, the atmosphere transformed into a realm of magic and peacefulness. The moonlight danced upon the water’s surface, casting a silver sheen that accentuated the natural beauty of our surroundings.

It was a night where time stood still, and the ordinary became extraordinary under the celestial canopy. In those magical hours, Landal Dylan Coastal Resort became more than just a destination; it became a sacred space where the moonlit memories forged a connection that would linger in our hearts long after the weekend had passed.

In this tranquil setting, surrounded by the rugged beauty of the landscape and the soft caress of the evening breeze, we found solace in each other’s company. Conversations flowed effortlessly, fuelled by the shared warmth of the hot tub and the serenity of the moonlit night. We reminisced about moments long past, exchanged stories, and revelled in the simple pleasure of being present in that moment.

The next day unfolded with a journey into luxury at the spa, where we were captivated by the state-of-the-art facilities. Milk Wood House offered an unrivalled experience, from herbal steam saunas to Roman baths and an indoor infinity pool. The spa’s ambiance was rejuvenating, providing the perfect escape.

The spa, with its seaweed-based ishga treatments and outdoor hydrotherapy pool, was a true oasis of calm. The resort’s indoor swimming pool and a fully-equipped gym added to the allure. State-of-the-art equipment motivated us to embark on fitness goals before a second night in the hot tub taking in the views for one final time.

Waking up in luxury very quickly became a routine, with the north side showcasing green hills and the south side offering an extended coastline view. The resort’s commitment to providing an unforgettable getaway was evident in every detail.

Landal Dylan Coastal Resort was more than a destination; it was an immersive experience, blending relaxation, entertainment, and stunning scenery. So, whether you’re a fan of reggae beats, a spa enthusiast, or a fitness buff, this Welsh retreat promises an unforgettable and diverse getaway.
