In the enchanting realm where artistry meets gemstones, there exists a visionary force named Sonya Konstantinovsky. With a heart captivated by the rare brilliance, Sonya embarked on a journey that would lead to the creation of SONYA K., a jewelry brand that transcends the ordinary. Her story is one of passion, resilience, and a relentless pursuit of dreams that emerged even stronger in the face of adversity.

Sonya’s odyssey began with a serendipitous discovery on Instagram—an encounter with a green stone that ignited a profound love affair with Tsavorite. What started as a personal fascination blossomed into a transformative exploration of rare gemstones, unraveling a world of unique beauty she was determined to share. SONYA K. was born not just out of a desire to craft jewelry but to curate a collection that embodies elegance, individuality, and empowerment.

In the tapestry of Sonya’s narrative, every gemstone, every creation, and every triumph is a testament to the power of dreams, the resilience of the human spirit, and the enduring allure of timeless beauty. Join us on this inspiring journey into the luminous world of SONYA K.—where dreams crystallize into gems, and jewelry becomes a reflection of life’s most precious moments.

Your journey into the world of jewelry started with a deep love for Tsavorite. How did this love affair with gemstones inspire the creation of SONYA K., and what sets it apart from other jewelry brands?

In 2018, while scrolling on Instagram, I came across a green stone that immediately captured my heart. The gemstone dealer selling it informed me it was called tsavorite but couldn’t provide much more information. Intrigued, I began researching the stone, unveiling other unique gems in the process. It felt like I had stumbled upon a magical world of rare gemstones that I didn’t want to leave.

I began purchasing gemstones through Instagram, building a small collection of rare specimens. Though I desired to create jewelry, I lacked a clear vision of its appearance. With the onset of COVID, I put my dream on hold during the uncertain times. However, my perspective changed in December 2021 after contracting the virus. I realized life is unpredictable, prompting me to pursue my dream.

Seeking manufacturing in New York City to support the local community amid job losses, finding the right manufacturer proved challenging. Yet, once secured, everything started falling into place. I firmly believe in the notion: start walking, and the road will appear. Starting any venture involves a lot of uncertainty, but with faith, light gradually emerges.

What sets SONYA K. apart is our focus on crafting jewelry with rare gems, not limited to the three most popular colored stones—emerald, ruby, and sapphire. Tsavorite, for instance, is 300 times rarer than emerald. Introducing clients to truly unique gems distinguishes us.

We prioritize top-quality products, meticulously attending to every step of the creation process, from gem selection to craftsmanship. Our jewels are simple, elegant, and eye-catching. Versatile enough for jeans yet elevated for a red-carpet event, many pieces can be worn in multiple ways, reflecting our core values of versatility and wearability.

The Taylor necklace stands out, transforming from a tennis necklace to a more elevated look. Can you share the creative process behind designing versatile and wearable pieces that adapt to our fast-paced lives?

The Taylor necklace comprises a classic diamond tennis necklace base with a seamless lock for adding pendants. Wear it on its own as a timeless diamond necklace or with a colorful gemstone pendant. I envisioned a piece that transforms on the go—start your day with a simple diamond layer and, later, for a power lunch, business meeting, or dinner event, attach a pendant for a unique style. It’s a staple for any jewelry lover.

Ideal for travel, the Taylor necklace allows endless customization with various pendants, eliminating the need for multiple necklaces for different outfits. Similarly, I enjoy creating earrings with ear jackets, providing multiple ways to wear the same piece.

SONYA K. focuses on creating modern, timeless pieces. How do you balance the contemporary aesthetic with the timelessness of your designs to ensure they remain relevant in the ever-changing world of fashion?

I ensure our designs remain relevant by steering clear of chasing trends or fashion. Instead, I focus on creating minimalistic styles that are easy to wear, elegant, and unique. The gemstones I use are beautiful and unique, requiring minimal embellishment to stand out. They are akin to women who use makeup to highlight their natural beauty rather than obscure it.

Empowerment is a central theme in your design philosophy. How do you aim to empower individuals through your minimalistic designs and vibrant gemstones, encouraging them to wear their jewelry every day rather than saving it for special occasions?

I believe jewelry should be worn, not left to languish in a jewelry box. Gemstones, like sapphires, lose vibrancy if not exposed to light for extended periods. Your jewelry becomes despondent from neglect.

On challenging days, when you may want to retreat, a vibrant gemstone can serve as a reminder of strength. Whether it’s a green tsavorite or a bright Barbie-pink rubellite tourmaline, the gemstone smiles back, saying, “You’ve got this.” That’s how I want my jewelry to empower women—with vibrant, uplifting colors.

The idea of building a jewelry collection that portrays one’s unique style is intriguing. Can you share tips on how individuals can curate their collection to reflect their personality and evolve with their style over time?

Similar to building a wardrobe with staple items, a jewelry collection should include essentials. A classic Taylor diamond necklace is versatile with endless customization possibilities. Studs, hoops, and earrings with jackets offer varied looks. Rings are essential, and like a wardrobe, continuously build your collection over time.

In the fashion industry, some things are relevant in the moment, while others are timeless. My pieces fall into the timeless category, akin to an Hermès Birkin bag or a classic YSL blazer.

The vibrant colors of your gemstones are meant to brighten each day. How do you choose the gemstone colors for your pieces, and what emotions or experiences do you hope wearers derive from them?

Choosing gemstone colors involves encountering numerous stones daily. Some speak to you instantly, while others don’t. Vibrancy, cleanliness, and cut quality are crucial. I look for stones that excite me and will excite my customers, lending strength on gloomy days or heightening joy on great ones.

As a founder, how do you stay true to your brand’s vision while also incorporating new trends and technologies into your designs and business practices?

When designing new pieces, they must align with our core values rather than solely following trends. If they happen to align with a trend, that’s a bonus. As for technologies, I welcome any that contribute to creating the best product.

Your journey involved hands-on experience and self-learning about gemstones. What challenges did you face in establishing your brand, and how did those challenges shape the values and ethos of SONYA K.?

The most challenging aspect was manufacturing. It’s challenging to find individuals who excel in their craft, go the extra mile, and are genuinely good people. These challenges reinforced the importance of perseverance and excellence.

The concept of passing down jewelry to the next generation is beautiful. How do you envision SONYA K. becoming a part of family legacies, and what significance do you hope your pieces hold for future generations?

I am sentimental, and stories of individuals wearing their grandmother’s earrings to significant events move me. I envision my jewelry carrying similar significance. I hope my pieces become treasured heirlooms, connecting generations with shared memories.

Can you share a memorable story about a customer who felt a strong connection to one of your pieces, and how that experience reinforced your commitment to creating meaningful jewelry?

In May, a customer purchased a 7-carat, one-of-a-kind ring for his wife’s birthday. He had been searching for a top-quality tsavorite, and after viewing videos of the stone, he knew it was perfect. Sharing the passion for a stone with a client is profound, like translating the beauty of a gemstone into someone else’s language.

The intersection of finance and jewelry design is unique to your background. How do you think this combination enhances the value proposition for your customers, making them view their purchases as both aesthetic investments and financial ones?

I prioritize quality over quantity. Gems meeting specific criteria—untreated, top-color, well-cut—become appreciating assets. Besides financial value, owning such a gem means possessing a unique, appreciating asset.

Your emphasis on quality gemstones and craftsmanship is evident in your designs. How does your background in the financial field influence your approach to sourcing the best-quality gems, turning these pieces into not only adornments but also investments?

Observing rare and unique stones appreciating in value over time at jewelry auctions informs my approach. The emphasis on quality stems from a desire for gems that will command higher prices in the future.

Looking ahead, what excites you most about the future of SONYA K., and what goals or aspirations do you have for the brand in the coming years?

I started the brand during COVID, purchasing colored gemstones through videos. I look forward to traveling to Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Tanzania to meet suppliers in person and witness mining operations. I aim to expand the color palette of gems, working with Paraiba, Chrysoberyl, and Vietnamese Spinel. Additionally, I have exciting projects for the brand and aspire to see SONYA K. represented on platforms like NET-A-PORTER and Moda Operandi.

Our readers love to travel; what destination is at the top of your bucket list?

Outside of gemstone travels, I’d love to visit Mauritius, Costa Rica, and the Amalfi coast for pleasure in the near future.

When lacking motivation, what’s your go-to quote?

I don’t lack motivation; if anything, I struggle with controlling the urge to bring all my ideas to life simultaneously.

A lesson I’ve learned since starting my brand is that hard work yields rewards. Taking a leap of faith resulted in a radical career change, and seven months after launching, we had our first trunk show at Nordstrom flagship. In November 2021, we released our holiday capsule, “Passion & Strength,” during a month-long trunk show at Bergdorf Goodman, reinforcing that passion shows in what you do.

Welcome to the extraordinary world of Lachesis London, where luxury is not just a statement but a testament to the power of conscious, purpose-driven fashion…

The story behind Lachesis London is truly intriguing. What was the initial inspiration that led to the creation of Lachesis London?

The vision behind Lachesis London was to redefine luxury fashion, breaking away from the conventional high price points and mainstream brands. We aimed to introduce a concept where luxury could be celebrated in a new way, emphasising handmade products, meticulous craftsmanship, and the use of high-quality materials.

Time, as the most valuable commodity in the modern world, became a focal point for us. We wanted to showcase products where time and care were dedicated to creating beautiful items, where craftsmanship was at the core.

Additionally, we were passionate about integrating environmental and social responsibility into our concept, engaging with suppliers, brands, and charitable projects to make a positive impact.

In your opinion, how has the concept of luxury in fashion evolved over the years, and where does Lachesis London stand in this changing landscape?

The concept of luxury in fashion has undergone significant evolution. Traditionally associated with exclusivity and high price points, luxury now encompasses elements like sustainability, inclusivity, and design innovation.

At Lachesis London, we embrace these values while championing craftsmanship, ethical production, and unique designs. Our meticulous selection process ensures we work only with suppliers sharing our values, focusing on fair trade, sustainability, and a clean supply chain. We believe this approach sets us apart in the evolving fashion industry.

The name Lachesis is deeply symbolic for your brand. How does the concept of fate and destiny influence the curation of products at Lachesis London?

The name Lachesis was chosen to emphasize the powerful role fate played in bringing our business to life. It signifies our commitment to shaping our destiny within the fashion industry, weaving a unique narrative in luxury fashion.

In curating our products, we adopt a purposeful and meticulous approach, carefully selecting items that align with our brand’s story as if they were destined to be part of our collection.

Craftsmanship, superior quality, design empowerment, and social and environmental responsibility are integral to Lachesis London. Can you shed light on the process of curating products that align with these values? How do you ensure each product meets these high standards?

Our meticulous curation process involves extensive research to identify brands, artisans, and craftspeople who share our values. We assess and select products that showcase exceptional handcrafted quality.

A stringent due diligence process examines the supplier’s commitment to fair trade, sustainability, and transparency. If a supplier falls short of our high standards, we do not engage with them, emphasizing our unwavering commitment to quality and ethical practices.

Lachesis London collaborates with suppliers committed to Corporate Social Responsibility, philanthropy, and sustainability. Could you share some examples of these collaborations and the positive impact they’ve made on local communities and the environment?

A notable partnership is with Luxury Handbag Designer Zanir Furtado. Their handcrafted bags, made from sustainable full-grain leather, exemplify quality and ethical production. Beyond creating jobs and embracing fair trade, they plant trees for each bag sold, contributing to environmental conservation. Additionally, a percentage of our sales revenue supports two charities in Brazil, furthering our social responsibility initiatives.

In today’s market, how does Lachesis London distinguish itself as a platform for exclusive high-end products?

What unique experiences or offerings set Lachesis London apart for your customers?

Our distinctiveness lies in valuing craftsmanship, celebrating uniqueness, and supporting emerging designers worldwide. Amidst mass-produced fashion, we champion new talent, giving them a platform to showcase their creations.

We maintain exclusivity by carefully selecting a limited number of pieces for each product category, ensuring a streamlined and premium shopping experience. Our commitment to high quality and limited supplier engagement reinforces our dedication to exclusivity.

The broader definition of luxury now encompasses elements like time, craftsmanship, and environmental consciousness. How do you think this expanded notion of luxury influences the fashion industry, and what challenges and opportunities does it present for brands like Lachesis London?

The awareness surrounding concepts like sustainability and craftsmanship has empowered consumers, who increasingly choose brands aligned with their values. This shift challenges the industry to embrace positive changes, fostering innovation and ethical practices.

Lachesis London aims to inspire these changes by championing craftsmanship, supporting new designers, and promoting sustainable luxury. While challenges exist, the opportunity to make a positive contribution to the industry and society is immense.

Lachesis London sources products globally. Could you share intriguing stories about the artisans or craftsmen behind some curated products? How do these cultural influences enrich Lachesis London’s offerings?

One of our suppliers, Catarina Mina, designs handmade crocheted bags, each carrying a unique QR code revealing the artisan’s story. Another captivating product is the Golden Grass Jewelry Collection from Brazil, crafted from the plant “Capim Dourado.”

This sustainable material, available only for a short period annually, is transformed into exquisite bracelets, earrings, and necklaces, showcasing the beauty of cultural diversity and sustainability.

Corporate Social Responsibility and sustainability are core to Lachesis London’s values. How do you foresee the future of sustainable luxury in the fashion industry? What changes do you hope to inspire through your brand’s initiatives?

Sustainability must be ingrained in a company’s DNA. Awareness about its impact on our lives and future generations compels consumers to choose ethical brands. Mainstream companies are already taking steps, indicating a positive trend.

Lachesis London hopes to inspire a focus on craftsmanship, supporting new designers, and championing ethical practices. By showcasing the beauty of sustainable luxury, we aim to encourage others to embrace positive changes.

What exciting developments or projects can we expect from Lachesis London in the future? Are there upcoming collections or collaborations that you’re particularly excited about?

Lachesis London has exciting plans ahead! We anticipate expanding to Europe and introducing children and menswear next year. While I can’t reveal many details yet, we have some thrilling collaborations in the pipeline, promising unique and exceptional offerings. Stay tuned for more updates from Lachesis London!

Lastly, what does self-care mean to you, and do you have a go-to quote for motivation when feeling uninspired?

Self-care, to me, involves achieving balance between physical health and mental well-being. Regular exercise, including Pilates and Tennis, coupled with a balanced diet and quality time with family, help me maintain this equilibrium. When lacking motivation, I reflect on the root cause, seeking clarity. While I don’t have a specific quote, understanding the underlying issue often reignites my motivation.

Meet Ileana Djujic, the creative force behind Foxy Pearl Jewelry, a brand that dares to redefine the conventions of jewelry with a perfect blend of authenticity, elegance, and a touch of rock ‘n’ roll spirit.

Ileana’s journey into the world of jewelry design is not just a tale of crafting stunning accessories but a narrative of passion, resilience, and a commitment to authenticity.

Explore the influences that shape Ileana’s designs, from the legacy of rock icons like Jimi Hendrix to diverse art forms, cultures, and historical periods. Join us as Ileana reveals her aspirations for the future of Foxy Pearl Jewelry, upcoming collaborations, and the exciting projects that lie ahead.

Get ready for an inspiring journey into the world of Foxy Pearl Jewelry, where each piece tells a unique story, and authenticity is not just a design choice but a way of life…

Your passion for pearls and the idea of authenticity is at the heart of Foxy Pearl Jewelry. Could you share a specific moment or experience that ignited this passion and led you to start your jewelry brand?

I don’t think it was a specific moment, but rather a series of little moments and a steady, burning passion for jewelry. It began with my interest in jewelry as far back as I can remember.

Slowly, I discovered the appeal of pearls in my adolescence, wearing them as a young teen to various events and non-events. This led to a reputation for having a style “too old for my age.” As my curiosity for jewelry art form grew, I delved into its background, exploring its origin, history, and evolution.

Educating myself on jewelry and pearls became a journey, discovering different authentic brands in local shops, jewelry fairs, road shows, and during my travels. Once armed with enough knowledge, I felt the need to share it, leading me to start blogging about jewelry.

However, in my naivety, I decided to build a website without even writing a single blog post. I hadn’t realized you could blog without a website, a humorous oversight. People began assuming I was creating my own brand, sparking the idea that eventually led me to Foxy Pearl Jewelry. It was a turning point.

Although I initially hesitated, citing a lack of time, the COVID-19 pandemic provided the opportunity to reassess, leading me to draw, create, and research potential partners who believed in my vision during those challenging times.

Pearls are often associated with tradition and elegance, but you describe them as enigmatic, playful, and striking. How do you incorporate these unconventional qualities into your designs, challenging the traditional notions of pearl jewelry?

Beyond their familiar associations with tradition and elegance, pearls are sometimes unfairly labeled as “boring,” “outdated,” or “old-fashioned.” This is far from the truth.

Pearls, with their diverse colors and shapes, including round, semi-round, drop, baroque, and circle-baroque, offer endless possibilities. Keshi pearls, flat and with a cornflake shape, exemplify pure nacre and fascinating luster.

The value of pearls, determined primarily by their luster, extends to considerations of their origin, whether freshwater or saltwater, and regional denominations like Tahitian or South Seas. Their vulnerability to environmental conditions adds to their appeal, reminding us of the immeasurable value of passing beauty.

To me, pearls are playful due to their versatility, enigmatic as they exude appeal without being imposing, and striking not through extravagance but impenetrability. While other gemstones require labor to achieve maximum effect, pearls achieve it naturally.

The vulnerability of pearls, easily altered by various factors, highlights their immeasurable value. I incorporate pearls into my designs by combining them with other materials, symbolic elements, and creatures, creating contrasts and highlighting their unique qualities.

The concept of authenticity is central to Foxy Pearl Jewelry. In a world driven by trends, how do you maintain authenticity in your designs, and what steps do you take to ensure that your creations stand out as genuine and unique?

Authenticity is crucial, keeping me true to myself and reflecting the belief that authenticity is beauty. While it’s easy to follow trends, it requires no imagination or creative thought. Authenticity, on the other hand, involves understanding what you like, why you like it, and expressing it courageously.

Jewelry, as a form of communication, becomes a reflection of oneself without words. Trends are rules; style is freedom. In my designs, I maintain authenticity by seeking what is aesthetically pleasing to me and determining what I want to communicate. I find beauty in contrast, combining elements of femininity with masculinity, light and shadow, fragility and strength.

For example, I mix pearls with chains, highlighting the contrast between feminine and masculine energies. In the Naga collection, I use pearls on snakeskin, symbolizing renewal, as snakes shed their skin, representing resurgence and longevity. The contrast between the fragile nature of pearls and the symbolism of snakeskin showcases authenticity.

The name “Foxy Pearl” pays tribute to Jimi Hendrix and his song “Foxy Lady.” How does music, especially the legacy of rock icons like Hendrix, influence your creative process, and how do you translate musical emotions into jewelry designs?

Music to me is the highest form of art. It embodies pure emotion that cannot be touched or defined. It is a transformative journey that reaches the deepest corners of your soul. You can see a painting, you can touch a sculpture, but you can’t do that with music. There is no physical element to it, only imaginative.

Jimi Hendrix’s influence on my creative process stems from his groundbreaking entry into the music industry without formal training, inability to read or write music, yet achieving the highest peaks in the electric guitar sound.

Beyond his indomitable guitar skills, Hendrix’s authentic style, marked by mystery and uniqueness, serves as an inspiration. The connection between music and jewelry lies in the transformative, imaginative, and emotional aspects shared by both art forms.

Sustainability and ethical practices are becoming increasingly important in the fashion industry. How does Foxy Pearl Jewelry contribute to sustainable fashion, and what initiatives do you undertake to ensure your jewelry is environmentally conscious?

Foxy Pearl Jewelry contributes to sustainable fashion by using recycled silver for its designs. All pieces are responsibly crafted in a small production studio, exclusively handmade, avoiding mass production.

The business follows a small batch, slow-fashion model, focusing on quality over quantity. By utilizing recycled materials and adopting ethical production practices, Foxy Pearl Jewelry aligns with environmentally conscious principles.

Creativity often blossoms from diverse sources of inspiration. Are there any other art forms, cultures, or historical periods that influence your jewelry designs, and if so, how do you incorporate these influences into your creations?

Various art forms, cultures, historical periods, and personal interests influence my jewelry designs. Performing arts, such as opera and theater, history, geography, mythology, and nature elements all play a role.

Although not all influences are incorporated into current designs, they provide a foundation for future collections. For instance, mythology aspects are evident in the Naga collection, nature elements in the Sunflower collection, and geometry and symbolism in the Infinity Link collection. Each collection represents a unique combination of influences, creating diverse and meaningful jewelry pieces.

Each piece of jewelry tells a story. Can you share the story behind one of your favourite creations, detailing the inspiration, materials used, and the emotions you aimed to convey through the design?

A notable creation is the Infinity Link collection. This collection reflects my appreciation for contrast, combining opposites that meet and unify in a circle. Pearls, fragile and alterable, are paired with the everlasting circle, representing continuity and infinity.

The mysterious nature of both elements adds depth to the design. The choice of using brass instead of silver imparts an ancient feel, while hammered brass provides dimension, richness, and sparkle.

The lightness and ease of wearing the necklace and earrings, despite their grand appearance, demonstrate that boldness need not compromise practicality. The design aims to convey the idea that, while life as we know it ends, it never ceases, symbolized by the enduring circle.

As the founder of Foxy Pearl Jewelry, what do you consider your proudest moment or achievement in your journey so far, and how has it shaped the direction of your brand?

My proudest moment has been starting a business and taking risks. Conquering fear and embracing vulnerability have defined my journey. With no background in entrepreneurship or formal jewelry training, my passion and determination became the driving force.

Learning through reading, watching, asking, and attending small classes shaped my approach. The variety in my designs, ranging from bold, to raw to detailed, reflects the diverse experiences and challenges encountered along the way.

Building a successful jewelry brand requires a balance between creativity and business acumen. How do you manage the creative aspects of designing jewelry while also handling the business side of running a brand, such as marketing and sales?

Balancing creativity and business is challenging, and I’m still navigating the process. Creativity requires isolation and dedicated time and space for thinking and imagining. On the business side, I’m continually learning about marketing and sales through courses, reading, consultations, and industry peers’ advice. Juggling both aspects simultaneously is demanding, with one often taking priority depending on the situation. Managing the dynamic between creativity and business remains an ongoing effort, and I strive to find the right balance.

Personal style often evolves over time. How do you envision Foxy Pearl Jewelry evolving to cater to the changing tastes and preferences of your customers while staying true to the brand’s essence?

Customer feedback is essential in guiding the evolution of Foxy Pearl Jewelry. I value suggestions and recently received useful insights that will be considered in future designs.

While pearls remain a focal point, I envision incorporating more gemstones into Foxy Pearl. I appreciate colourful, mixed, and experimental designs. The focus will remain on keeping the designs elegant, bold, and authentic, reflecting the essence of the brand.

In the process of creating Foxy Pearl Jewelry, what valuable lessons have you learned that you believe aspiring entrepreneurs, especially in the creative field, should be aware of?

I’ve learned that making mistakes is inevitable and should be embraced. The journey of running a business is often a trial-and-error process rather than a straight line. Strategic aspects of running a business may involve setbacks, but overcoming them contributes to growth.

From a creative perspective, I’ve realized the importance of narrowing focus and starting small. Instead of attempting too much simultaneously, selecting a collection or two establishes recognition and familiarity with customers. This has been a personal challenge, given my tendency to be consumed with various ideas. Recognizing the need to learn from mistakes, narrow focus, and start small can guide aspiring entrepreneurs, particularly in the creative field.

Looking into the future, what are your aspirations for Foxy Pearl Jewelry? Are there any upcoming collections or projects that you are particularly excited about and would like to share with your audience?

I appreciate collaborations and have recently partnered with a clean skincare brand, Jasmina Beauty, for a holiday campaign featuring unique gift sets. Both brands share values of sustainability and ethics, making the collaboration meaningful.

Additionally, there is a potential collaboration with a New York-based clothing company in discussions. These ventures align with Foxy Pearl’s commitment to sustainability and authenticity. As for upcoming collections, I envision incorporating more gemstones while maintaining the brand’s focus on elegance, boldness, and authenticity.

Our readers love to travel. What destination is at the top of your bucket list?

Two destinations top my bucket list. Alaska, with its secluded, unspoiled nature, fascinating wildlife, and the allure of the Northern Lights, appeals to my sense of adventure.

The dream of being pulled on sledges by Siberian Huskies in a mystic and cozy setting makes it a fairytale destination.

Madagascar, with its unique flora and fauna, particularly lemurs, captures my imagination.

The desire to experience an uncommercialized island escape, coupled with childhood memories of watching a travel channel episode about Madagascar, makes it a long-cherished dream.

When lacking motivation, what is your go-to quote?

“You do what you can for as long as you can, and then when you finally can’t, you do the next best thing. You back up, but you never give up.” – Chuck Yeager

This quote emphasises the importance of perseverance in business. Acknowledging that mistakes and setbacks are part of the journey, the quote encourages accepting, embracing, and internalising challenges. It underscores the notion that success often results from accumulated hard work and determination over time.

Get ready for an inspiring journey into the world of jewellery design, guided by the Presidente of Elegance herself, Gloria Bass…

Can you share a defining moment in your 45-year journey as a jewellery designer that has significantly shaped your approach to design and craftsmanship?

A defining moment, like “an overnight success,” can sometimes take a while to evolve. My encounters with those few people who became my mentors certainly shaped my approach to design and validated the importance of good craftsmanship. Their belief in me propelled me forward.

Your creations are known for evoking sensuality and elegance. How do you balance these elements to create pieces that are not only visually stunning but also comfortable to wear?

No matter how stunning a piece may be, if it isn’t comfortable, the thrill of wearing it is diminished, and it will remain in the drawer. When designing a piece of jewellery, comfort is one of the main factors I take into consideration.

With an international clientele, how do you navigate cultural influences in your designs to ensure they resonate with a diverse range of customers?

I often find something that visually inspires me when I travel. That inspiration, to varying degrees, becomes incorporated into my design sense and shows itself in my work. There is a universal appeal to something that is familiar, yet at the same time different.

The combination of voluptuous pearls, breathtaking gems, and distinctive goldsmithing techniques sets your designs apart. Could you elaborate on your creative process when working with such exquisite materials?

The wonderful materials I have been fortunate to find are exciting on their own, and by the time I have them in my hands, I’m already beginning to formulate what I would like to produce. At times, the materials themselves dictate what needs to be done.

As the soul of Gloria Bass Design, how do you infuse your personal sensibility into each piece of jewellery, and how has this evolved over the years?

I think it just comes naturally at this point, and I won’t make anything that I do not like. The focus is on the beauty of the gems, and the structure of the piece is infused with my own sensibilities. Occasionally, a client comes in with a piece that I made for them 30 years ago. It gives me great pleasure to see it again and know that the design is still as relevant today.

Precision and attention to detail are evident in your work. Can you share a specific instance where your commitment to these qualities resulted in the creation of an extraordinary piece?

I was once commissioned to make a necklace for a client using her pearls and diamonds. She wanted to have a “multi-purpose” piece that could be worn in several different ways. The end result was a “Swiss Army” necklace which could be separated and worn as 4 different necklaces. The textured gold and diamond clasp sat in the centre of 4 short strands of pearls. It could be split apart to be worn as a long double strand with two clasps, or as two separate necklaces with smaller clasps. It was an immensely satisfying and challenging engineering project.

Custom-made pieces play a significant role in your portfolio. How do you collaborate with clients to ensure their individual needs and preferences are seamlessly integrated into the design?

Custom-made pieces are difficult in that the commission often includes the client’s stones, which have been removed from old jewellery. I appraise the individual client’s personality, profession, and lifestyle in producing designs that will work for them while still maintaining my design aesthetic. I like to push the client’s comfort zone a bit, and, thankfully, they trust me enough to go with it.

Montreal serves as the backdrop for your workshop. How does the city’s culture and ambiance influence your creative process and the overall aesthetic of Gloria Bass Design?

Montreal is a very cosmopolitan city, and we benefit from diverse cultures here—predominated by French and English. There is a European sense of sophistication and elegance that infuses itself into everything. As a result of this, my work needs to have a brand appeal, and I am aware of this factor.

In an industry where trends can change rapidly, how do you maintain a timeless quality in your designs while staying innovative and relevant?

I am always aware of trends but don’t necessarily agree with or follow them. I think my work transcends trends and is timeless in itself.

Over the years, you’ve built a team of highly skilled assistants and craftsmen. How do you foster a collaborative environment that allows for the seamless execution of your creative vision?

I have been blessed to build a solid relationship, over many years, with craftsmen and suppliers who understand my sensibility and can deliver the level of quality I require in my work. In the end, every piece that comes out of my workshop has my name on it and reflects that creative vision.

Your creations often become wearable works of art. Can you share an anecdote where a piece of jewellery took on special significance for a client, turning an ordinary day into an extraordinary one?

I often work with a client’s inherited jewellery and turn it into a relevant and wearable piece. The joy expressed by the client upon seeing the work is always extraordinary. I once remodelled a diamond ring given to my client from her late husband. She could not wear it as a ring but was reluctant to get rid of it. I turned it into a very wearable and casual necklace that took on a very different meaning. She was blown away.

Jewellery is often associated with special occasions. How do you envision your pieces becoming a part of everyday life, beyond the traditional realms of celebrations and events?

Tastes in jewellery have changed over the past few years, and COVID has accelerated that process. For many years even before COVID, my clients have been asking for a piece “that I can wear every day.” That means office, evening, dressed up, or jeans. I get immense pleasure from bumping into clients (in the course of a day or at an event) and seeing them wearing a piece they proudly proclaim they rarely take off. And I still enjoy designing a spectacular piece of jewellery for that special celebration!

As a goldsmith and designer, technology must have played a role in the evolution of your craft. How do you balance traditional craftsmanship with contemporary tools and techniques?

I must admit that I am not a fan of computer-assisted jewellery pieces. I find that they have no soul. We still rely on traditional jewellery craftsmanship, which, sadly, is a dying art. I am all for any process that can shorten the time it takes to hand fabricate a piece of fine jewellery, but I always come back to traditional handwork.

The use of the finest materials is a hallmark of Gloria Bass Design. How do you source and select materials to ensure the superior quality that your brand is known for?

I have a network of gem dealers I trust and have worked with for many years. After all these years, I have developed a very good eye and can instantly spot something extraordinary and exciting to work with. I am also aware of the problems the gem industry is facing, especially since COVID shut down mines and reduced the labor market significantly. I must ensure that the pieces I buy are from trusted sources that can supply the quality I use.

Looking ahead, what excites you the most about the future of jewellery design, and how do you see Gloria Bass Design continuing to make its mark in the ever-evolving world of fashion and art?

There are many young jewellery designers who are bringing a new focus into the industry. It is always exciting to see a different way of looking at things. GBD will continue to evolve alongside the fashion and art world.

In this exclusive interview, House of Coco sits down with Sofie Andersson, the visionary founder of Anekdot, a groundbreaking brand that is redefining sustainable fashion. Dive into the inspiring narrative as Sofie shares the captivating journey behind Anekdot, her commitment to ethical practices, and the fusion of exquisite nostalgia with modern design that sets her lingerie, swimwear, loungewear, and accessories apart.

Join us on a journey through the brand’s sustainable mission, empowering local craftswomen, and the unique design process that shapes each limited edition piece. Discover the fascinating stories behind Anekdot’s upcycled materials and how the brand is making waves in influencing the broader fashion industry towards a more sustainable future.

As Sofie unveils her future sustainability goals and the vibrant Anekdot community, readers are invited to delve into the world of conscious fashion, where loved clothes last and every piece tells a story…

Origins and Inspiration:

Can you share the story behind the inception of Anekdot? What inspired you to start a brand that focuses on transforming surplus materials into high-quality fashion pieces?

I wasn’t happy with the social injustices and environmental crisis caused by the fashion industry and I could not find lingerie that reflected my values while also having the aesthetic, quality, and comfort that I was looking for to wear myself. I felt an urge to create lingerie in sensual and special materials sourced in Italy where I studied, and design them in a way that celebrates the female form.

I wanted to empower women from within, knowing that the item worn close to the body is made with love and ethics. Lingerie that makes women feel comfortable in themselves and live their values. By using surplus materials each item also comes in limited edition that’ll make you feel as special as when you are thrifting quality vintage.

Sustainable Fashion Mission:

Anekdot has a strong emphasis on sustainability. How did the idea of upcycling surplus materials come about, and how does it align with your vision of fashion and environmental responsibility?

As a designer, I have always been inspired by the fabrics themselves and been the most creative when looking at the fabrics available and do the best out of them. After I graduated in Florence and relocated to London to work with sustainable fashion pioneers, I understood better the massive environmental problem caused by the fashion industry due to the crazy amount of pre-consumer waste in the production chain, and I got utterly committed to continue to source and work with these materials to save precious resources.

In my opinion, to use already existing materials that would otherwise get thrown away is the most sustainable material to use, since even recycling them into other materials would require more energy and water resources. To create underwear and swimwear out of surplus materials is perfect since we can easily cut around potential defects and use smaller off-cuts and smaller quantities and still make designs without necessarily showing a patchwork aesthetic. It’s more work to source the materials and more time-consuming to produce from them, and when we finish a loved product unfortunately we can not reproduce it. But as a small responsible brand, we are highly committed to working in this way for a sustainable future.

Local Craftswomen Empowerment:

Your production involves collaboration with small woman-owned factories in Poland. How has this partnership empowered local craftswomen, and why is supporting women in the manufacturing process important to Anekdot?

We are producing partly with local seamstresses in Berlin and partly with small woman-owned factories in nearby Poland, to save CO emissions by local production, and by having a close relationship with our craftswomen we make sure that each person gets paid fairly. We want to avoid blood, sweat and tears in the production of our collections, which sounds like something to take for granted, but unfortunately is not easy to control if producing far away or even worse outside Europe.

We want that the women who produce for us can actually live from it, and even better, also enjoy the process. It is important for Anekdot because me as the designer and owner of the brand would not be able to sleep at night if I knew that the people who produce for us were not treated well. There have been many catastrophes happening in the fashion industry which shine a light on the problem, like the Rana Plaza disaster in 2013, and unfortunately child labor and extremely bad work conditions are keep on happening. If I want to continue work in fashion, I want to avoid being a part of this problem, at any cost.

Unique Design Process:

Anekdot’s designs are described as a fusion of exquisite nostalgia and sleek comfort. Can you walk us through the design process, particularly how you balance the historical and the modern in creating your lingerie, swimwear, loungewear, and accessories?

First of all, I´m inspired by the material that I source. A decorative floral lace, a minimal sexy mesh, a classy silk.. once I have the materials that I fell in love with in front of me, I imagine how they would best fit the female body and the everyday life of a modern woman. I want the woman to feel comfortable, sexy and special and to bring a touch of nostalgia in the way that the lingerie is shaped or having special details that´s inspired from vintage lingerie.

The amount of vintage feel needs to be balanced with the fabric and to fit into the modern life. For example, if the fabric already is vintage style, I would do the style more minimal and Scandinavian style details, meanwhile if the fabric is modern-looking, I would prefer a high waist vintage style panty and small front hooks on the bra like a vintage corset. Anekdot lingerie should not be pieces to hang and create dust in your wardrobe; they are created to be lived and loved in the everyday life and this harmony and a good amount of comfort is, therefore, super important.

The Upcycling Concept:

Anekdot is an upcycle brand, focusing on using leftover materials. How do you ensure that the upcycled materials meet the high-quality standards expected in the fashion industry?

Most of our leftover materials are sourced directly from the fabric supplier and they have all the quality composition tags on them where the quality is tested as usual on their production. The reasons why they are leftover vary; it could be a defect every 10 meters like a hole or stain, or it could be that the color turned out a bit different than what the original client order, or it could be that the elasticity or width of the fabric became different than what it was supposed to be.

It could also be that they produced too much or too little.. or because it was produced a long time ago and not in their latest catalog. The quality is still perfect. When we source from other designer leftovers or deadstock in other ways when there is no fabric composition tag on them, I quality control the fabric personally by burning them to know the composition (I studied fabric science) and test washing them to know if any defects appear.

Limited Edition Philosophy:

Anekdot’s products are described as limited editions. Can you elaborate on why this approach was chosen and how it aligns with the brand’s values and commitment to sustainability?

I wanted to create pieces that make women feel special and not look like everyone else. I always loved shopping vintage because when you find a treasure you know it´s only you who will wear that unique piece. For hygiene reasons, I don´t want to shop vintage lingerie, and therefore I wanted to create a collection of lingerie and swimwear that is produced in limited edition and feels as special and fun to shop as vintage.

At the same time, by producing from surplus materials, we have no other choice than to produce limited edition, since once we finish the fabric of a certain piece we cannot buy it again.

Championing Slow Fashion:

Anekdot’s commitment to making sure “loved clothes last” reflects a slow fashion philosophy. How does the brand encourage consumers to adopt a more mindful and sustainable approach to their fashion choices?

Our lingerie and swimwear are meant to be lived and loved for many years, and therefore many of our items are versatile to be able to wear them in many different ways to not get bored of them. Many of our items also fit to wear to different occasions; like our robes, they fit to wear from the beach to the bedroom to a restaurant.

And our swimwear also fit well to wear for sport like yoga and as tops for clubbing (Berliner style hehe), and our swimwear are also sold as separate items, so you can mix and match top and bottom to have a lot of variations, if you one year want to buy just 1 new item to get more variations of your already existing Anekdot items.

We also encourage to repair your Anekdot items if they break in any way. Laces are delicate materials so if you get stuck in your pants zipper for example, we are happy to repair them for you!

Empowering Anekdot Community:

Anekdot seems to build a community around its brand. How do you envision the Anekdot community evolving, and how can individuals become more actively involved in supporting the brand’s mission?

We love to treat our community with exclusive deals and exclusive limited edition product launches, and also offline and online events to mingle together in person. The best way to know about everything Anekdot is to sign up for our newsletter!

We also have a Rewards program where you can Earn points (=discount) by placing orders and on your birthday, for example, and you can also Earn discounts by spreading the word about Anekdot to your friends. All of this means the world to us and supports our mission in the best way. And the more people we have onboard, the more amazing products and events we will be able to offer!

Our readers love to travel, what destination is at the top of your bucket list?

In the dynamic world of fashion, where trends evolve and styles emerge, there are those rare individuals who embark on a mission that transcends the ephemeral nature of design. Simon Ngu, the visionary Founder and CEO of Each x Every, stands at the forefront of a revolution in footwear – a revolution that fuses the realms of comfort and style into a seamless, harmonious whole.

As we delve into this exclusive interview, we uncover the profound philosophy and unwavering commitment that fuel Simon’s journey. Each x Every is not merely a brand; it’s a manifesto challenging the norms of an industry that often demands a compromise between fashion and functionality.

Simon’s vision, articulated through the brand’s compelling philosophy, seeks to reshape the narrative of sizing diversity in the luxury and designer segments, where conformity has long overshadowed inclusivity.

With meticulous attention to detail and an acute understanding of the intricate dance between aesthetics and wearability, Simon Ngu has orchestrated a symphony of elegance and comfort in the world of footwear. As the custodian of a brand that champions not only individuality in style but also the fundamental right to perfectly fitting shoes, Simon shares insights into the origins of Each x Every and the challenges and triumphs that have defined its journey…

Each x Every was born out of a desire to seamlessly combine style and comfort. Could you share the defining moment or inspiration that led to the brand’s creation?

During my time as a young lawyer, I observed a curious trend among my female colleagues – a meticulously planned daily ritual of calculated footwear changes. It was not uncommon to witness them walking in the front door with their trainers, swapping to flats within the office, donning pumps for meetings and events, and even stashing ballet pumps in their purses for the commute home.

Their elaborate efforts to coordinate footwear with their outfits and daily activities intrigued me to explore the gap between designer footwear and the practicalities of wearing them.

This intricate dance between the practical demands of a corporate woman’s life and the desire for stylish footwear offered me a unique perspective. It was evident that there was a stark division between fashion and comfort, and lifestyle brands in their approach to comfort and wearability. The consumer was being forced to choose between style and comfort, and I wanted to create a product that could deliver both.

While aesthetics are paramount for a luxury brand, the design and construction techniques often lead to poorly fitting shoes that induce discomfort and pain. Each x Every emerged as a response to this dissonance. We launched the brand with the vision to create elegant and exquisite shoes described as beautiful but also offering perfect fits and exceptional comfort.

Throughout our process, we strive for the wearability of our shoes, incorporating cutting-edge comfort technology without compromising the inherent striking elegance and beauty of our footwear. With Each x Every, our goal is for women to no longer need to choose between fashion and comfort – they can have both.

To deliver on that mission we help women who really value both fashion and comfort to navigate footwear choices with tips and advice on buying to meet their busy lifestyles such as finding comfortable shoes for work and the ultimate comfortable heels for weddings.

The concept of infusing comfort into modern footwear is both groundbreaking and compelling. Could you elaborate on your approach to this challenge and the key principles that have guided your design process?

Achieving optimal comfort begins with one fundamental principle: ensuring the right fit. Unfortunately, the prevailing approach within the fashion footwear industry is to accommodate a single standard width fitting. This means that if your foot deviates slightly from the standard width, compromises to comfort are inevitable. At Each x Every, we embark on a different journey.

Our approach centers on achieving the perfect fit. To achieve this, we offer three distinct fittings, enabling us to cater to a diverse range of foot shapes and sizes. From this foundation, we employ intelligent methods to seamlessly integrate comfort technology into our shoe designs, resulting in footwear that not only looks stunning but is also a dream to wear.

What sets us apart from traditional comfort brands, however, is our ability to achieve fit and wearability without compromising the aesthetic allure of our silhouettes. We rigorously test our designs to ensure that, from a visual standpoint, there is no perceptible distinction between the different widths we offer. To be truly size-inclusive, we believe that our shoes need to look the same no matter the width.

Ultimately, the litmus test for us is simple: every shoe we craft, irrespective of width, must embody timeless beauty. At Each x Every, aesthetics and comfort coexist harmoniously, ensuring that every step you take is a testament to our unwavering commitment to excellence.

The dedication to offering an extensive range of sizes and widths is truly commendable. Could you elaborate on the intricate process involved in accommodating the unique shapes and sizes of individual feet?

The fashion and luxury footwear landscape currently offers shoes in a single-width fitting, often favoring a narrow width, which is generally thought to be more pleasing to the eye. However, this approach fails to cater to the diverse range of foot shapes and sizes that exist, particularly considering that the average British and American woman tends to have a slightly wider foot than her European counterparts. Recognising the pivotal role that fit plays in the overall footwear experience, Each x Every takes a different approach.

In order to deliver multiple width fittings, we needed to create our own fitting system. We started by selecting a standard width fitting that more accurately reflects the average British foot, ensuring a comfortable starting point. From there, we extend our range to include narrower and wider fittings on either side of the standard, meticulously designed to capture the nuances of various foot shapes. This comprehensive spectrum ensures that we are poised to accommodate a significant proportion of the British population.

To validate our sizing precision, we have undertaken an array of tests involving different foot shapes and sizes. This process has enabled us to fine-tune our offerings and ensure that each shoe is designed with thoughtful consideration of individual foot characteristics. Beyond size, we meticulously analyze strap placement, adjustable hole positioning, and other intricacies to facilitate breathability, flexibility, and comfort.

It’s important to note that a foot changes size during the day as it swells as a result of activity and heat. These intelligent design considerations allow our footwear to “grow” with your feet during the day.

For most women, finding the right fit can be confusing and quite often, a lengthy time-consuming process of trial and error. There are however, some really useful tips that no-one ever tells you that you can use to find the right fit so if you do find this challenging we’ve summed them up in our guide to buying shoes for narrow feet and advice on buying shoes for wide feet.

The concept of customization holds a significant place in Each x Every’s offerings. How does this personalization contribute to enhancing the overall comfort and style experience for your valued customers?

In a world where discerning consumers demand exclusivity in their apparel and footwear, Each x Every has redefined personalization on two pivotal fronts. We’re dedicated to ensuring that our customers receive the best shoe-wearing experience possible, and this begins with crafting footwear that fits perfectly with your foot’s unique contours. Unlike conventional luxury brands, our extensive array of sizes and widths ensures a bespoke fit that transcends the ordinary. This personalized foundation sets the stage for unparalleled comfort, addressing the very essence of luxury.

Yet, personalisation goes beyond fit. Our latest collection celebrates the power of individual style transformation. We understand that today’s luxury purchases are driven by the concept of “Cost Per Wear” – a considered calculation of how much wear will we get out of each of our purchases.

This insightful perspective has inspired us to empower our customers with the ability to modify their shoe silhouettes. Take our Sasso sandal, for instance – a single shoe offering up to five distinct styles – thanks to adjustable straps. This innovative approach redefines the equation, giving you more without having to acquire more.

Furthermore, we’ve woven a tapestry of elegance and versatility by introducing the captivating synergy of jewelry and footwear. Now, you can elevate your look by adorning your shoes with exquisite jewelry pieces, turning an elegant daywear shoe into a masterpiece suitable for prestigious events. This fusion encapsulates our unwavering dedication to multifaceted personalization, resonating with your unique preferences and fashion aspirations.

In essence, Each x Every is not just about offering a product – it’s about offering a lifestyle that embraces your individuality, upholds your comfort, and transforms your style. Experience a new dimension of personalisation with us.

Sustainability and Longevity, are crucial factors in today’s fashion industry, how does each address these aspects?

In today’s dynamic fashion landscape, the pursuit of sustainability and longevity resonates deeply with Each x Every’s ethos. While most brands are making commendable strides in developing environmentally friendly materials, we believe it’s equally crucial to address the fundamental issue of overconsumption that plagues the fashion industry.

Our perspective revolves around redefining the relationship between fit and aesthetics. The prevailing market norm of limited sizing options often compels consumers to compromise on comfort for style. This compromise inevitably leads to a shortened lifecycle for shoes, as they languish in storage due to discomfort.

We call these shoes, one-time wears. Our mission is to eliminate this compromise by creating shoes that marry impeccable fit with captivating aesthetics. The result? Footwear that is cherished and worn till its fullest potential, dramatically reducing waste.

Additionally, the allure of fast fashion’s disposable nature poses its own sustainability challenges. Here, versatility emerges as a solution. Each x Every’s commitment to adaptable design empowers consumers to transform their shoes, enhancing wearability and mitigating the urge to accumulate more pairs than they need.

By offering shoes that effortlessly transition between styles, we encourage a conscious and mindful approach to consumption that allows the consumer to feel like they’re not “giving up” on something.

Addressing longevity, we understand the precarious balance between material choices and durability. We prioritize quality by utilizing premium leather and partnering with skilled craftsmen in Italy and Portugal. This deliberate approach ensures that our shoes endure, gracefully transcending fleeting trends and making a lasting impact on both style and the environment.

In essence, Each x Every seeks to revolutionize the very essence of sustainable fashion by marrying comfort, style, and durability. Through thoughtful design and a commitment to fostering enduring relationships with our products, we aspire to shape a future where fashion contributes positively to both individual lives and the planet we call home.

The blend of comfort and style is a unique selling point for Each x Every. Can you share some stories or testimonials from customers who have experienced the brand’s transformative footwear?

One of our earliest customers stumbled upon Each x Every through a simple Google search while in pursuit of the perfect pair of heels for an upcoming wedding. What made her search uniquely difficult was looking for elegantly beautiful shoes in a size 9 wide. The lack of sizing diversity from high street and luxury brands offered slim pickings and, due to her size, she was often left feeling excluded from the fashion industry’s narrative of beauty and style.

In her quest, she discovered the Tie Bluebell Mule from Each x Every, a captivating pair that harmoniously blended sophistication and comfort. This mule became the missing puzzle piece to her wedding guest ensemble, filling a gap that had long evaded her. This experience was a transformative moment for her, as she found herself seamlessly included in the world of fashion choices that was rarely ever inclusive.

This story remains etched in our brand’s journey, reminding us of our mission’s impact. To provide a meticulously crafted shoe that not only reflects timeless elegance but also champions individuality and comfort is a source of immense pride. Our ability to grant her the joy of choice, self-expression, and a beautifully fitting pair of shoes serves as a testament to the transformative power of Each x Every’s footwear.

In the fast-paced and competitive fashion industry, Each x Every distinguishes itself by embracing a mission-driven approach. As a brand owner, I believe it’s my responsibility to offer something the world truly needs, not just another version of a shoe that looks a little different.

Our foundation is built on a commitment to solving real problems. We recognise that a significant portion of the population remains underserved, often excluded by luxury and designer brands due to the size of their feet. This forces customers to make a difficult choice between stylish shoes and their dream footwear, often enduring discomfort and pain because of improper fit.

At Each x Every, we are dedicated to championing size diversity. We firmly believe that whether you have wide feet or narrow feet” should not limit your access to high-quality, beautifully crafted shoes. Crafting footwear that accommodates various foot shapes and sizes is not just a goal; it’s a source of immense satisfaction for us.

“It’s not just women with narrower or wider feet that are marginalised by luxury and designer brands but also those with often hidden foot disabilities or “odd” foot shapes. There is a growing population of women who have bunionsplantar fasciitishigh arches and swollen feet (especially during or after pregnancy) to name a few and who feel excluded from wearing beautiful, glamorous, elegant shoes offered by these exclusive brands.”

From a design perspective, our focus is clear: we aim to provide more people with a luxury experience through exquisite shoes that surpass what the current market offers. Our dedication to addressing this need and our commitment to inclusivity are at the core of our values, guiding us in a competitive industry where staying true to our mission is paramount.

Empowerment is often linked to the shoes we wear. In what ways does Each x Every strive to empower women through its comfortable and stylish offerings?

Empowerment lies at the heart of our mission at Each x Every, and it begins with the profound sensation of wearing shoes you adore. When we talk about shoes, it’s often that initial spark of desire, that visceral feeling upon first seeing them on a store shelf or onscreen. It’s challenging to put into words, but we all recognise that powerful allure.

However, one of the most disheartening experiences is when you finally put on those coveted shoes, and they simply don’t fit or prove to be incredibly uncomfortable. Many times, we’re left disheartened, feeling that even though we adore a brand or a specific shoe style, it just doesn’t work for us. In such cases, we might attempt to push through the initial hesitation and purchase them anyway, hoping they’ll become comfortable over time, but we end up with sore and unhappy feet.

Empowerment, for us, transcends the aesthetics of the shoe; it’s about how you feel when you wear them. If we can be the brand that creates products people fall in love with and feel confident wearing because our shoes seamlessly support their lifestyles, then that encapsulates our holistic definition of empowerment in the realm of footwear.

All too often, we witness beautiful shoes worn briefly, only to be kicked off midway through an event or dinner, and replaced by more comfortable options. While this makes sense from a functional standpoint, it sends a clear message that we adore being seen in certain shoes, but they detract from our overall life experience and what we can comfortably do in those moments. Our goal is to bridge these two narratives and experiences so that what you see and fall in love with aligns seamlessly with your experience of being in those shoes.

For us, true empowerment emerges when you’re not just enamored with the appearance of your shoes but also when they enhance your overall experience and confidence, enabling you to fully embrace life in the shoes you love.

Each x Every has a compelling brand philosophy. What legacy does the brand hope to leave behind, and what do you envision for the future of fashion with a focus on comfort and style co-existing without compromise?

Our brand philosophy revolves around influencing the fashion footwear market to embrace sizing diversity. We believe that we’ll have made significant strides if we can inspire more brands, especially those in the luxury and designer segments, to offer consumers a wider array of sizes and widths. In many countries, including the UK, we meticulously measure children’s feet and produce shoes in different widths to ensure a proper fit. It’s perplexing that this approach stops when we reach adulthood.

Within our vibrant community, we consistently encounter individuals with varying foot sizes and shapes. The limitation of adhering to a single predefined foot shape or width set by a brand is inherently exclusionary. Our goal is to encourage the footwear market to take decisive steps towards providing more sizing options and widths, similar to what the fashion industry has achieved with plus and petite sizes. By doing so, we can offer products that cater not only to our fashion desires but also to our foot health, a crucial aspect that’s frequently overlooked.

It’s essential to recognize the long-term repercussions of wearing ill-fitting shoes or those that cause discomfort. Over time, these choices can lead to severe foot health issues, ranging from bunions to neuroses. Hence, our mission is twofold. Firstly, we advocate for shoe companies to prioritize designing their products with versatility in mind. We firmly believe in breaking free from the unsustainable consumer behavior of purchasing shoes, wearing them only a few times, and then discarding them. While addressing the impact of fast fashion on consumer mentality is crucial, it’s equally important for footwear brands like ours to rethink shoe design, aligning it more closely with our consumers’ diverse needs. This shift is something we aspire to influence and instil in future generations.

Embark on a journey through the vibrant world of Marqueeta Hughes, a visionary designer whose footsteps resonate with empowerment and authenticity.

In this exclusive interview, we delve into the transformative moments that shaped Marqueeta’s odyssey from overcoming childhood challenges to establishing her own footwear label.

With a passion for fashion, an unwavering commitment to individuality, and a global perspective cultivated in the diverse landscapes of London and Dubai, Marqueeta shares the compelling narrative of her brand, where each step is not just a stride but a declaration of self-affirmation.

Join us as we unravel the layers of inspiration, resilience, and creativity that define Marqueeta Hughes’ extraordinary journey in the world of fashion…

Could you please share the pivotal moments in your life and career that led you to establish your own footwear label?

I have always had a passion for fashion, especially shoes, but my relationship with it was a love-hate one. Growing up, I faced teasing about my feet, leading me to wear shoes that were too small and avoid certain styles and colors.

A crucial moment occurred during my undergraduate years when I couldn’t find a single pair of shoes that made me feel good in a footwear store. It was then that I decided to channel my energy into building my own footwear brand, using every class to hone my skills. Post-graduation, each career move, course, and relocation was a deliberate step towards creating what I envisioned as the Apple of Footwear.

Your educational background includes a Fashion Marketing and Management Degree from the Art Institute of California and an MBA from Hult International Business School in London. How have these experiences shaped your approach to designing and running your own fashion brand?

My undergraduate studies were instrumental in allowing me to explore every facet of the fashion industry, from design to store operations. As I delved deeper into building my business, I felt the need for a solid business foundation, which prompted me to pursue an MBA.

This decision not only provided me with a sense of security but also opened doors for travel, inspiration, and networking. I realized that even major companies grapple with uncertainties, reinforcing my belief in building my brand step by step. My education taught me to begin with a product meeting essential needs – beauty, functionality, and quality.

Marqueeta, your first collection is deeply personal, inspired by your move abroad and the decision to live life authentically. How does this collection reflect your journey, and what message do you hope it conveys to women worldwide?

Considering a career in law over fashion for its perceived respectability, I struggled with the tension between conformity and rebellion. Eventually choosing fashion, I opted for Marketing and Management over Design. When I moved abroad to study and launch my business, I had to trust my instincts and live the life I desired.

My first collection, the “I am Collection,” names each shoe after my favorite affirmations – “I am enough,” “I am confident,” “I am magic,” and “I am unique.” I want women worldwide to embrace these affirmations with every step they take.

Living between London and Dubai must have exposed you to diverse cultural influences. How do these experiences manifest in your designs, and how do you incorporate a global perspective into your brand?

London and Dubai, with their rich cultural influences and striking architecture, inspire subtle design elements and color choices in my work. For instance, I draw inspiration from the lines of buildings and incorporate meaningful colours, such as the green from the Nigerian flag in my upcoming collection, symbolizing wealth. My intentional choice to study in Dubai and London reflects in my brand’s global accessibility – designed anywhere, shipped almost anywhere, and crafted for all women.

Your brand is not just about footwear; it’s a symbol of empowerment for women. Can you elaborate on how you envision your label inspiring women to break free from societal expectations and embrace their individuality?

While still in the building stage, my goal is to create a community of empowered women who feel a sense of strength when they wear my shoes. I am mindful of comfort and functionality in my designs, steering clear of the pain threshold seen in many beautiful yet uncomfortable shoes. My brand aims to adorn women without suggesting they need my products to feel enough. Future plans include offering custom-made designs and accessories, further enhancing individuality.

In a world where fashion often sets rigid standards, your brand stands out for encouraging women to drop societal labels. How do you navigate the balance between staying relevant in the industry while promoting individuality and self-expression?

Extensive market research and conversations with women have revealed that, while many love fashion, they don’t consider themselves fashionistas. To strike a balance, I infuse my minimalist/modern design aesthetic with trending elements, typically expressed through colour.

I avoid mass production, limiting the number of produced pairs, and implement demand-based production. This approach ensures that designs go into production based on pre-orders and customer feedback, preventing decision fatigue and aligning with the ethos of individual expression.

Your love for art, fashion, and travel is evident in your work. How do these passions come together in your designs, and how do they contribute to the overall aesthetic of your brand?

At this point in my life, my brand is all about vibes. I am building it around the lifestyle I love – art, fashion, and travel. These elements manifest in various ways, whether through imagery, fabric choices, or colors. The first collection served as a live test, and the next one will more prominently reflect these passions in the overall aesthetic.

As a female entrepreneur in the fashion industry, what challenges have you faced, and how have these experiences influenced the mission and values of your brand?

The fashion industry can be exclusive, fostering an environment of “you can’t sit with us.” Rejecting this attitude, I prioritize uniqueness and authenticity, taking a different path by avoiding traditional “paying dues” routes.

Bootstrapping and crowdfunding my business, I faced capital challenges, and at times, gender biases led to a lack of initial support. In response, I aim to collaborate and hire women, emphasising inclusivity. My vision includes building a foundation to support women creatives, providing education and resources for aspiring entrepreneurs.

The House of Coco audience comprises trendsetters and fashion enthusiasts. How do you ensure that your designs resonate with your personal journey and also appeal to the tastes of a diverse and discerning audience?

My primary focus is sharing my passion for fashion and shoes. While staying informed about trends and customer preferences, my mission is to express myself authentically. By doing so, I attract those who resonate with my love, passion, and knowledge. Designing shoes is my true calling, and the magnetic pull of my authenticity draws in those who connect with my ministry of expression.

The name “Marqueeta Hughes” carries a strong personal brand. How do you cultivate and maintain authenticity in both your personal and professional life, and how does this authenticity translate into your designs?

Initially, I attempted to separate my personal identity from the brand, using a different name. However, feedback highlighted the uniqueness and sophistication of my own name, akin to iconic brands like Chanel and YSL.

Realising that I am the secret sauce, I embraced authenticity by intertwining my personal and professional identities. People connect with the real me, and messages of relatability keep me going. As a naturally private individual, I’ve learned to share my authentic self in a way that aligns with my well-being.

In the competitive world of fashion, sustainability is gaining importance. How does your brand contribute to sustainable practices, and how do you envision the role of sustainability evolving in the fashion industry?

Sustainability is ingrained in our brand DNA, evident in our small collections and demand-based production. Full traceability of our supply chain ensures transparency in manufacturing. While acknowledging that certain sustainable practices can be costly for a small brand, we plan to invest in recycled materials, trims, and packaging as capital grows. The goal is to align with evolving sustainability standards in the fashion industry.

As a designer who encourages women to embrace their true selves, what role do you see fashion playing in promoting inclusivity and diversity, and how does your brand contribute to this movement?

Fashion’s role in promoting inclusivity and diversity goes beyond token gestures. True progress involves inclusivity and diversity at all levels of influence and opportunity within the industry. My brand contributes by incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion principles throughout the creative process, hiring practices, messaging, and collaborations. This commitment aims to foster a more inclusive fashion landscape.

Looking ahead, what aspirations do you have for the future of your brand, and how do you hope to continue inspiring women to live boldly and authentically through your designs?

This is just the beginning; I am building the Apple of shoes. Future plans involve physical stores designed as unique experiences, incorporating technology for improved fit and customer experiences. Collaboration with other artists and designers will create a community or tribe, expanding my product offerings into a lifestyle brand.

Above all, I hope to inspire women by showcasing that, despite challenges, pursuing dreams leads to success. My journey from facing obstacles to building a dream brand in Dubai serves as a testament to the power of bold, authentic living.

Step into the serene world of Tia Shamiso as Chantelle Appenteng, the visionary founder, shares insights with House of Coco on the inspiration behind her holistic self-care brand.

In this exclusive interview, Chantelle unveils the heartfelt journey that led to the creation of Tia Shamiso, blending the essence of motherhood, personal well-being, and a commitment to affordable relaxation.

From the unique fusion of candles, affirmations, and handmade crystal beads to the deeply personal stories behind each product, discover the driving force behind Tia Shamiso’s mission to bring spa-like tranquility to the comfort of homes.

Join us as Chantelle reflects on challenges faced, success stories that touched her heart, and the future vision that promises even more avenues for self-care. It’s an intimate conversation with the founder herself, offering a glimpse into the passion and purpose that define Tia Shamiso’s distinctive approach to holistic well-being….

Can you share the inspiration behind the creation of Tia Shamiso and how it aligns with your vision for providing affordable self-care and relaxation?

Tia Shamiso is named after my first child – my daughter Tiana Shamiso. The inspiration initially was built on the foundation of me being a mother, having children, wanting to create products that are safe for the entire family to use. Then Tia Shamiso developed into more of a self-care wellbeing brand as I wanted to create products that were also beneficial for others who were in a similar position to myself.

I found myself in a place where I neglected myself; I was last on the list, and all of the essential self-care needs were just thrown onto the highway. I then discovered my niche: to support others who may be in a similar position and who may not have the luxury to spoil themselves.

What motivated you to combine candles, affirmations, and handmade crystal beads in your products, and how do you believe this combination enhances the self-care experience?

Our ethos is to provide a spa day experience in the comfort of your own home. So automatically, candles are a significant part of the spa relaxation environment. The difference with the candles I create is that each one has a meaning and affirmation behind them, acting as a reminder every time you light a candle of that affirmation. This way, you not only find yourself in a peaceful environment but can also meditate and remind yourself of the amazing person you are.

In a world full of self-care products, what sets Tia Shamiso apart and makes it unique for individuals seeking relaxation and peace of mind?

Tia Shamiso comes from a personal place. I have walked and lived through a lot in such a short space of time, allowing me to empathise with many of my target customers. While many people create candles, skin, and hair care products, Tia Shamiso takes it a step further by crafting meaningful products that are not only natural but also beneficial for your skin, hair, and overall well-being.

Can you describe the process of creating your Affirmative Candle Collection and the thought that goes into selecting specific affirmations to accompany each candle scent?

I recently went through a difficult patch where mentally and emotionally I was not in a great place. As a Christian, I turned to affirmations from the Bible. I chose scriptures that related to what I was going through and pinned them around my room.

Seeing them every day and reciting them every morning, I linked them to key words, which became the names of my candles: Faith, Purity, and Essence. Each candle is also linked to a scent, each with its own meaningful association.

Faith – To have faith that your situation will turn around for the better – Cherry Blossom

Purity – To have a fresh, new pure mind and heart – Lavender

Essence – To build yourself up, your character. That you are a sweet-smelling aroma – Vanilla

How do you believe the ambiance created by your candles and the energy from the crystal beads contribute to mental and physical well-being, especially in today’s fast-paced and stressful environment?

The main objective of our products is to allow you to be in the comfort of your home and create an environment tailored to your liking, away from the busyness of the outside world. The focus of our Crystal beads is for self-love purposes, encouraging individuals to appreciate and adorn their bodies, fostering a positive sense of self.

Tia Shamiso seems to emphasize handmade products. What significance do you see in handmade items, and how does this aspect enhance the overall experience for your customers?

With the use of handmade products, you can be assured that every aspect of the formulation to production process has been conducted and overseen by myself. Every ingredient, essential oil, and carrier oil has been specifically chosen for their beneficial properties. Many of these ingredients have been used on myself, providing firsthand experience of how they feel and the positive outcomes they bring.

Could you share a success story or a testimonial from a customer that truly highlights the impact Tia Shamiso products have had on their relaxation and self-care journey?

Certainly! One testimonial that stood out was from a new mom going through the challenges of post-birth, experiencing sleep deprivation, aches, and the loss of a bit of her identity. She purchased a candle, body scrub, and body butter, and what struck me was her comment about having just half an hour.

That alone changed so much about how she was feeling—able to relax, reflect, and feel human again. This resonates with the core purpose of Tia Shamiso, not just to be another skincare and self-care business but to genuinely impact a community where needs can easily be forgotten.

Considering the increasing awareness around mental health, how do you see Tia Shamiso playing a role in promoting mental wellness and self-care practices?

I aspire for Tia Shamiso to be a brand that constantly reminds, encourages, and nags you to seek self-care, wellness, and wellbeing. Especially with the pressures of day-to-day living, Tia Shamiso aims to emphasize that life with you in it is the most beautiful thing.

The use of crystal beads in your products is intriguing. How do you choose the crystals, and what specific energies or benefits do they bring to the users?

As I briefly touched on before, the crystal beads serve more of an aesthetic purpose, allowing users to feel and look good. Drawing from my own experience, wearing beads makes me feel great. Traditionally, in my family’s Ghanaian heritage, waist beads carry various meanings related to marriage, weight management, and more. However, for us, it’s primarily for decorative, feel-good purposes.

What challenges have you faced while building Tia Shamiso, and how did you overcome them?

With any business, there are peaks and valleys, periods of abundance and scarcity. During challenging moments, it might feel like your brand is not gaining traction or is not worth it. However, I view it as an agenda that Tia Shamiso must make a difference in someone’s perspective on themselves and their lives.

If I can make a positive impact on one person’s life, that’s more valuable than making all the sales in the world. Being a mother of four, with the oldest being eight, brings its own set of challenges. Nevertheless, I see Tia Shamiso as an example to my children, showing them that they can achieve anything they set their minds to, and that prioritizing self-care and wellbeing is crucial from a young age.

How do you envision the future of Tia Shamiso? Are there any upcoming products or initiatives that your customers can look forward to?

We are looking to introduce many more candles and water-based body butters for added moisture. Additionally, we plan to expand our presence on the high streets, bringing Tia Shamiso to local markets, which I am eagerly anticipating.

Self-care means different things to different people. How do you believe Tia Shamiso caters to a diverse range of self-care needs and preferences?

We have a range of products designed to cater to individual needs. Beyond skincare, we also produce hair care products suitable for the entire family. Understanding that self-care can vary among individuals, we have reflected this diversity in the products we offer.

Incorporating affirmations into your products is a unique approach. Can you share how you believe positive affirmations impact one’s mindset and overall well-being?

Affirmations work similarly to how we learn and develop as individuals. From birth, we absorb information from our surroundings, shaping who we become. Affirmations function in much the same way but are targeted toward specific seasons an individual may be going through. When feeling sad, uplifting music may help; when anxious about an exam, affirmations can serve as a reminder that you can overcome challenges. Positive affirmations can have a significant impact on one’s mindset and overall well-being.

Tia Shamiso promotes relaxation and peace of mind. How do you personally incorporate relaxation and self-care into your busy life, and do you have any favorite Tia Shamiso products that you use regularly?

While I love all our products, I have a soft spot for our lemon sugar scrub and cocoa vanilla body butter. These were our first skincare products created, and the feeling I have coming out of the shower is indescribable. I feel like I can slip into my best self and sleep like a baby. I create what I call “relaxation pockets” in my home to prioritise self-care amidst my roles as a nurse and a mother. Self-care is a high priority for me.

Our readers love to travel, what destination is at the top of your bucket list?

I am a summer beach holiday enthusiast, so it would have to be a piping hot destination. I would love to visit the Seychelles, somewhere exotic like Bora Bora, and the Maldives.

Lastly, what advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs who aim to create a brand centered around holistic well-being and self-care, based on your own experiences with Tia Shamiso?

Make it personal, make it unique to your experience, and identify a need or area that has not been prioritized. Work hard to make a difference in an identified community that needs your brand and products. Have fun and have a heart for your brand, and never give up!

In the realm of skincare, where innovation meets tradition, one name stands out—Rezzi Ingemarsson, the visionary founder behind Kanobe. With a spirit fueled by a profound commitment to fair trade, ethical sourcing, and empowering women, Rezzi has woven a narrative that transcends borders.

From the vibrant landscapes of Morocco to the bustling diversity of Brussels, her journey has been a tapestry of cultural inspirations and a celebration of natural beauty traditions. The heart of Kanobe beats to the rhythm of ancient remedies, meticulously selected organic ingredients, and a resolute dedication to cruelty-free practices.

Inspired by the legacy of her grandmother, Rezzi’s brand not only delivers high-quality skincare but also serves as a beacon for women seeking empowerment in the business world. As Kanobe marks its inaugural year, Rezzi shares insights that echo a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, promising a future where skincare is not just a routine but a holistic celebration of heritage, diversity, and self-care…

Kanobe is deeply committed to fair trade and ethically sourced ingredients. Could you share a specific experience or encounter during your travels that reinforced the importance of ethical sourcing in your mind?

Several years ago, I traveled to Morocco with a friend and explored the capital, Rabat, the historic city of Fes, and the breathtaking Chefchaouen, known for its blue mountains. The captivating landscapes of Morocco inspired me to indulge in authentic hammam and massage experiences. These treatments featured pure almond and argan oils, traditional beldi (black) soap, and clarifying clay masks. I also acquired some henna, which proved beneficial for my locs.

Despite the increasing trend of hammams in Europe, I was struck by the purity of ingredients used in Morocco, drawing parallels to the natural skincare routines of Nigerian women. In Nigeria, where I spent my childhood, skincare routines centered around 100% natural and effective ingredients such as shea and cocoa butters, dudu osun (black soap), and coconut oil. While these ingredients gained global popularity, there remained an imbalance in compensating African farmers for raw materials used in cosmetics products and in the food industry, such as cocoa and vanilla pods.

This realisation fueled my commitment, upon founding Kanobe, to spotlight the rich ingredients from Africa and collaborate with local producers and fairtrade suppliers.

Kanobe products focus not only on skin appearance but also on skin health. How do you balance ancient beauty traditions with modern skincare needs to create products that are both effective and nurturing?

The notion that modern skincare is inherently more advanced than ancient beauty traditions is a misconception. Centuries of human history reveal a consistent desire for clear, exfoliated, and moisturized skin. Professor Gad Saad’s insightful video reminds us that our generation often erroneously believes it is the first to experience or solve problems, a perspective applicable to beauty concerns as well.

Kanobe incorporates remedies from diverse ancient skincare traditions worldwide, addressing specific skin concerns. Ingredients like Somalian ‘Maydi’ frankincense and green mandarin oil from ancient China are integrated into our products. Innovation is crucial in natural skincare, necessitating effective, natural alternatives to traditional formulation ingredients and sustainable, non-plastic packaging.

While ‘modern’ skincare may offer quick, short-term effects, Kanobe focuses on reviving and maintaining skin health with a holistic, sustainable approach, prioritizing enduring results over fleeting benefits. Positive customer feedback, especially regarding relief from skin irritation and chronic dryness, reaffirms our commitment to this approach.

Being cruelty-free is a core value of Kanobe. How challenging was it to ensure that your products met this criterion, and what steps did you take to guarantee cruelty-free formulations?

Maintaining a cruelty-free stance aligns seamlessly with our use of food-grade ingredients in crafting fully natural skincare. Since I formulate and hand-make all Kanobe products, maintaining control over ingredients and quantities is relatively straightforward, eliminating the need for animal testing.

For formulations requiring preservatives or other necessary ingredients, substantial effort has been invested in sourcing natural, effective, and cruelty-free alternatives. This challenge, though demanding, has been met by collaborating with like-minded and innovative companies dedicated to cruelty-free practices.

Kanobe products are crafted with organic ingredients. Could you elaborate on the meticulous process of selecting these ingredients to ensure they are pure, organic, and of the highest quality?

Selecting organic ingredients involves a disciplined approach to certification and quality. Whether reaching out to potential producers in Egypt, Morocco, or Madagascar, each ingredient undergoes a thorough evaluation process. Certification by a reputable third party is a non-negotiable criterion, ensuring the organic integrity of the ingredients. The process requires patience and persistence, as certification does not always guarantee both quality and organic standards.

However, I am pleased to have encountered professional and well-prepared suppliers who provide the necessary documentation, contributing to the overall quality of Kanobe products.

Fostering fair relationships with farmers and producers is central to Kanobe. Can you share a story about a farmer or producer whose life was positively impacted by your brand’s commitment to fair compensation and ethical sourcing?

In its first year, Kanobe aims to encourage the companies I source from to continue investing or producing in Africa. Each Kanobe product features a ‘star’ certified organic ingredient from the continent, such as Egyptian jasmine, Moroccan argan oil, Kenyan Baobab oil, or organic Maydi Frankincense.

Additionally, the ‘holy trinity’ of West African butters and oils—shea butter, cocoa butter, and coconut oil—are sourced from Ghana. While finding certified organic producers from Nigeria has proven challenging, I am actively seeking partnerships in the hope of expanding the brand’s reach and impact.

Kanobe is named in honor of your grandmother. How does her legacy inspire the formulations and ethos of your brand, especially in empowering women through your products?

My grandmother, Felicia Akanobe Egbodor, embodied kindness and entrepreneurial spirit. As a savvy businesswoman, her influence, along with that of my great-grandmother and mother, instilled in me the confidence to pursue various goals.

Kanobe reflects this legacy by prioritizing community impact, mirroring my grandmother’s approach of leading with the heart and considering the broader impact beyond numbers. Naming the company after her is a tribute to her memory, and I hope to inspire other women to pursue their business ideas, regardless of scale.

How has the cultural diversity of Brussels influenced the development of Kanobe products, and how do you incorporate this international flair into your creations?

Brussels, with its thriving organic scene and diverse communities, serves as a rich source of inspiration for Kanobe. The city’s mix of influences, from locally sourced food markets to diverse cultural communities, provides a unique environment for product development. The ability to physically interact with a variety of herbs, oils, and essential oils has been invaluable during the formulation process.

While sourcing ingredients globally is possible online, the immediate accessibility in Brussels allows for a more hands-on and experiential approach, contributing to the international flair in Kanobe’s creations.

Kanobe products are described as “food-grade.” Could you explain the concept of skincare as food for the skin and how it reflects in the formulation of your products?

Our skin, being the largest organ, benefits from ingredients that are not only good for our diet but also promote healthy and resilient skin. The scientific correlation between diet and skin health is well-established. Recognizing that harmful skincare products can introduce toxins to the skin, Kanobe adopts a skincare-as-food philosophy.

All products are crafted entirely from naturally-derived ingredients, aligning with the wisdom of traditional skincare practices. No exceptions are made for fragrances or preservatives, ensuring the purity of Kanobe products. Transparency is a core value, reflected in the product ingredients being suitable for consumption—though it’s important to clarify that Kanobe products should not be ingested.

Kanobe products are suitable for sensitive skin. What are the challenges in creating products for sensitive skin, and how do you ensure your formulations are gentle yet effective?

Creating products for sensitive skin involves extensive research, combining traditional remedies known for their soothing properties with organic formulations. Remedies like oat soap and shea butter, renowned for their skin-soothing qualities, are incorporated into the Kanobe range.

The entire product line is free of synthetic fragrances, challenging the norm of sensory experiences often associated with skincare. The careful selection of natural alternatives and a heightened awareness of potential allergens and essential oils ensures that Kanobe formulations are both gentle and effective for a variety of skin types. Essential oils, with their medicinal history spanning millennia, are used judiciously, recognizing their potential benefits for specific skin concerns.

You mentioned using gentle methods to preserve the integrity of organic produce. Could you shed light on these methods and how they contribute to the overall quality of Kanobe products?

Preserving the active qualities and natural fragrances of pure, unrefined ingredients is a priority in Kanobe’s production process. Minimal heat is applied to ingredients, avoiding unnecessary mechanical stress. The traditional cold process, used for all Kanobe soap bars, requires patience as the soaps cure over several weeks.

This method allows organic oils and butters to maintain their unique properties, while retaining glycerin for added moisturization. Embracing the principles of ‘slow’ skincare, the brand ensures that the benefits of organic ingredients are preserved, contributing to the overall quality of Kanobe products.

Kanobe incorporates ingredients from around the world. Can you share a story of a specific ingredient that amazed you with its benefits and became a star component in one of your products?

Wild carrot essential oil, not indigenous to Africa, captivated me with its healing properties and became a star component in several Kanobe body oils and balms. Despite its non-native origin, the oil’s remarkable benefits warranted its inclusion. Another standout is baobab oil, derived from the African ‘Tree of Life.’

Its exceptional healing properties, particularly in soothing skin burns, led to the creation of a dedicated body balm. These ingredients, with their diverse cultural backgrounds, showcase Kanobe’s commitment to incorporating what works from various traditions into its products.

Kanobe draws inspiration from the vivacious women in your family. In what ways does your brand aim to empower women beyond providing high-quality skincare products?

Empowering women extends beyond product formulation for Kanobe. Actively seeking partnerships with and sourcing from women-owned businesses is a consistent effort. The brand ensures that its traditional shea butter, coconut oil, and argan oil are sourced from women’s cooperatives, offering above-market compensation for their contributions.

Additionally, Kanobe approaches skincare as a moment of joyous self-care, promoting positive associations for women. The brand challenges conventional beauty terminology, preferring to focus on nourishing and rejuvenating properties rather than adopting the prevalent ‘anti-aging’ language. This intentional choice aligns with Kanobe’s commitment to empowering women through positive messaging and impactful business practices.

What’s next for Kanobe? Are there any upcoming product launches or initiatives that your customers can look forward to, and how do these align with the core values of your brand?

Passionate about empowering African-based producers, Kanobe is working on an initiative to enhance their competitiveness and facilitate easier exportation. The brand is also committed to connecting with retailers through the Folklore Connect platform, fostering meaningful partnerships and expanding Kanobe’s reach.

Future product launches will include everyday skincare staples, such as raw nut butters, soothing skin lotions, and plant-based shower gels. Responding to customer demand, larger sizes of certain products, like the Ethiopian coffee body scrub and Rich Cocoa Body Butter, will be introduced. As Kanobe continues to explore ideas, the brand anticipates delving into the realms of hair care, natural perfumery, and scented candles, promising an exciting and diverse future.

As we conclude this enlightening journey into the heart and soul of Kanobe with its visionary founder, Rezzi Ingemarsson, we’re left inspired by the fusion of tradition and innovation. In every drop of Kanobe’s skincare creations, there’s a narrative of ethical sourcing, empowering legacies, and a commitment to natural beauty that transcends borders.

As the sun sets on our conversation, we’re left eagerly anticipating the continued growth of Kanobe, a brand that not only nourishes the skin but also nurtures a global community connected by a shared passion for authenticity and well-being. Here’s to radiant futures and the beauty that blooms when tradition meets the contemporary, all within the embrace of Kanobe.

In the enchanting realm of visual storytelling, where emotions unfold through the lens, Katharina Haupt stands as a maestro, weaving tales of love, empowerment, and the celebration of self through her lens.

With an unwavering commitment to capturing the essence of human connection, Katharina’s photography transcends the ordinary, transporting us into the heart of unforgettable moments.

As we delve into her world, we uncover not only a skilled photographer but a compassionate guide, dedicated to empowering her clients and immortalizing their unique narratives. Join us on a journey through the artistry and passion that define Katharina Haupt’s captivating approach to photography….

Katharina, capturing the essence of love and emotion is central to your work. Could you share a memorable moment from your career where you felt you truly encapsulated the emotions of a couple’s special day through your photography?

In 2022, I photographed a truly special couple. Their first look before the ceremony was a moment to remember – they were over the moon seeing each other, and you could feel the love pouring out. They exchanged compliments and tears, setting the tone for the whole day. It was a day full of heartfelt emotions. One of my favourite shots was during the ceremony, capturing the bride wiping away her tears while the groom looked towards her, equally emotional. It was one of those beautiful days where everyone felt the joy and love in the air.

Your approach emphasises making couples feel comfortable and natural in front of the camera. How do you create this atmosphere, allowing your clients to express their genuine emotions during such intimate moments?

Creating a comfortable atmosphere starts with building a strong connection with my couples. That’s why I always meet them personally before they decide to book me. It’s crucial that we’re a good fit; this way, they feel more relaxed and hardly notice me on their big day. During the shoot, I guide them just enough to help express their love – be it through hugs, gentle touches, or kisses.

I love adding a bit of movement to the poses, as it brings photos to life. And, of course, I tailor this to each couple’s unique vibe, whether they’re bubbly and outgoing or a bit more reserved. It’s all about capturing their true selves and the genuine emotions of the moment.

Weddings are filled with unpredictable moments. Can you tell us about a challenging situation you faced during a wedding shoot and how you creatively navigated it to capture beautiful photos?

At one particularly well-planned wedding, the bride, a perfectionist, had everything meticulously organised. This left little wiggle room in the schedule. As often happens, the congratulations segment ran over, cutting into the time for formal photos.

Despite my advice to keep the necessary guests nearby for these photos, they were sent to the reception early. This, combined with an unexpected rain shower, caused some stress. To manage this, I quickly adapted by moving the photo location closer to the reception area. It’s situations like these that highlight the importance of flexibility in planning and listening to your wedding vendors’ advice.

Everything turned out beautifully in the end, but it was a reminder that a bit of buffer in the schedule can be a lifesaver.

Emotional moments are often intertwined with cultural and personal traditions. How do you ensure you respect and honor the diversity of these traditions while documenting the essence of each couple’s unique love story?

I’m passionate about photographing intercultural weddings and their unique traditions. To ensure I capture these special moments, I gather as much information as possible from the couple beforehand.

Whether it’s photographing Nigerian relatives in their stunning traditional attire and enjoying their self-cooked meal or capturing the Polish custom of a vodka shot and glass-breaking at the reception, I’m always ready to adapt. I believe these traditions are a vital part of the couple’s heritage and the essence of their wedding day, and it’s my job to document them beautifully and respectfully.

Your work not only focuses on weddings but also on capturing the journey of couples. How do you approach storytelling differently for weddings compared to other moments in a couple’s life, such as anniversaries or maternity shoots?

Wedding photography for me is about capturing the moment as it unfolds, with a focus on documentary-style storytelling. It’s also a lot about setting the mood and showcasing the location. For anniversaries or maternity shoots, however, the approach shifts. These sessions allow for more creativity in portraits. We can experiment with poses, lighting, and locations, as there’s generally more time than at weddings. During weddings, the time for couple shoots is often limited, so I rely on my trusted poses and techniques to quickly capture professional and emotionally resonant images.

Being inconspicuous is an art in wedding photography. How do you strike a balance between capturing candid moments and being unobtrusive, allowing the couple and their guests to enjoy the celebration without feeling overly observed?

Being on the same wavelength with the couple is key to blending in at their wedding. It helps me to be a natural part of the celebration rather than standing out. My approach is to let moments happen naturally, as I’m there to document the day, not to unnaturally create moments.

This means allowing the couple to fully enjoy their time with loved ones. I mingle with guests and take photos casually, using different focal lengths to capture moments both up-close and from a distance. This flexibility is especially important during the ceremony, as it allows me to avoid obstructing views.

When possible, I even turn off the shutter noise to minimize my presence, ensuring a relaxed atmosphere where candid moments can unfold organically. In fact, I’ve received numerous compliments from couples who mentioned their guests found me very friendly and hardly noticed my presence throughout the day.

Your photography is described as emotional and modern. How do you incorporate modern elements into your work while ensuring the timeless quality of the captured moments?

I blend my personal style, particularly in color grading and creative vision, with an awareness of modern wedding trends. This involves keeping an eye on high-quality wedding vendors both locally and internationally, as well as following wedding blogs.

While I make minor adjustments to stay current, I avoid clichéd, outdated poses like the stereotypical ‘couples hugging trees’. Instead, I draw inspiration from other art forms such as paintings of the romantic era and film noir. It’s about striking a balance: staying fresh and modern without chasing trends, ensuring the emotions and moments I capture remain timeless.

Photography is not just about capturing images but also about understanding people. How do you connect with your clients to truly understand their vision and expectations for their wedding day?

I believe in the power of personal connections, so meeting my couples before they book me is essential. This initial meeting is a chance to get to know them and understand their plans and expectations for their wedding day.

I take detailed notes and offer advice where I can. A few weeks before the wedding, I reconnect with them to go over the final details and any specific wishes they might have. If necessary, we’ll also arrange a quick phone call to ensure everything is aligned with their vision.

Your job allows you to witness and be part of some of the happiest moments in people’s lives. How does this experience influence your perspective on love and relationships?

I’ve always been a romantic at heart, believing in true love for everyone. Being a part of my couples’ special days, seeing their love and their connections with family, only reinforces this belief. It’s truly heartwarming. I recall a few years back, going through a tough break-up. Documenting others’ love stories was challenging, yet it also brought healing.

Listening to couples’ vows, understanding what drew them together and what they cherished in each other, profoundly influenced my perspective on what makes a relationship work. It was a powerful reminder of the strength and beauty of love.

Creative collaboration is often essential in the artistic field. Can you share a story where you collaborated with a couple to create a unique and personalized photography concept that turned out to be exceptionally meaningful?

This year, I had the opportunity to photograph a wedding at a stunning German castle. The couple, already fans of my work from a pre-wedding shoot, trusted my vision completely. Despite the cloudy day, we decided to take their photos inside the castle, with all the lights turned off. The castle’s interior was quite dark, and even a staff member suggested turning on the lights.

However, I felt confident that the natural interplay of shadow and light would create a more romantic atmosphere. The couple supported my decision, and it paid off. We captured one of my all-time favorite shots, a beautiful testament to the power of trusting in a shared creative vision.

Photography has the power to evoke emotions and memories. In your opinion, what makes a photograph truly timeless, and how do you ensure your work stands the test of time for the couples you capture?

In my work, I blend current trends with my unique vision to create timeless photographs. Key to this is my approach to color grading. I ensure the colors in my photos, like the blue of a groom’s suit, remain as true to life as possible while still reflecting my personal editing style.

Additionally, my use of light is inspired by professional photography techniques and timeless styles from other art forms, like the romantic era paintings and classic black and white photography. This combination of authenticity, artistic influence, and technical skill is what I believe makes a photograph truly timeless, resonating with couples for years to come.

Your work involves capturing not just the big moments but also the subtleties of love. What advice would you give to couples about appreciating the smaller, often overlooked, moments in their relationship?

It’s essential for couples to remember that the magic of a relationship isn’t just in the big events like weddings. The small, everyday moments are equally important. For instance, sharing your daily struggles or simply enjoying a book together in silence can be incredibly romantic and meaningful.

I’ve been exploring the Japanese concept of ‘Ikigai’ recently, which stresses the importance of finding joy in life’s little pleasures. This philosophy also suggests that appreciating these smaller moments can lead to a more fulfilling and happier life. My advice to couples would be to cherish these subtleties, as they often form the foundation of a strong, lasting relationship.

Every photographer has a favorite location or setting. Is there a specific place or type of wedding that you particularly enjoy capturing due to its unique atmosphere or challenges?

I have a particular fondness for weddings held in beautiful castles. There’s something magical about having the entire day unfold in one stunning location – from the getting ready, to the ceremony, the couple shoot, reception, and the party.

Not only does this create a relaxed and stress-free atmosphere for the couple, but it also allows more time for them to enjoy with their family and friends. This often results in more natural and emotionally rich documentary photos. And let’s be honest, capturing couple portraits in or in front of a grand castle? It’s breathtaking. The beauty of such a setting really enhances the quality of the photos.

Our readers love to travel, what destination is at the top of your bucket list?

Scotland, particularly the Highlands, is at the top of my travel bucket list. The moodiness of the landscapes, the rich greens, and the breathtaking natural beauty are exactly what I love to capture in my photos. It’s not just the nature that appeals to me; the ancient castles nestled within these stunning scenes are absolutely awe-inspiring.

I’m eager to explore Scotland both for personal travel and to hopefully photograph a wedding there one day. It’s my number one dream destination!

Lastly, what message or emotion do you hope your photographs convey to the couples who entrust you to capture their special moments, and what do you wish for them to remember when they look back at their wedding photos years later?

I hope my photographs serve as a vivid reminder of the deep connection and love my couples share. My wish is for these images to be a source of strength and trust, especially during the tougher times in their lives. Beyond that, I want them to look back at their wedding photos and vividly recall the beauty of the day, the joyous moments, and the precious time spent with loved ones. Essentially, my aim is for these photos to be a timeless testament to their love and the wonderful memories they created together.

What inspired you to specialize in boudoir photography, and how do you believe it contributes to boosting an individual’s self-confidence and sense of value?

My journey into boudoir photography began in 2021 with a client who had a great impact on me. Although I’d always been intrigued by boudoir photography, I hadn’t ventured into it until this client, who loved my work, entrusted me to capture her beauty.

The most rewarding part was seeing how the experience boosted her confidence. She felt empowered and incredibly beautiful, particularly as she embraced her curviness. This resonated with me personally, as I had also experienced changes in my own body. Having my portrait taken by another photographer helped me see myself through new eyes, reigniting my self-confidence. I was captivated by the idea of offering this empowering experience to other women, especially in a world where unrealistic beauty standards have been imposed.

Boudoir photography is a powerful way to help women see their true beauty, regardless of curves, scars, or any perceived imperfections. It’s about celebrating oneself fully and authentically.

In your description, you mention that boudoir shoots go beyond taking photos in underwear and are a personal gift to oneself. Can you elaborate on how you create an environment during the shoot that makes clients feel comfortable and empowered to express their unique selves?

Creating a comfortable and empowering environment for boudoir shoots starts with building trust, much like with wedding couples. This aspect is even more crucial in boudoir photography since clients often share their insecurities with me. It’s a vulnerable experience, confronting aspects of themselves they might not feel confident about.

To establish a safe space, I arrange a video call with potential clients before booking. This helps us determine if we’re a good fit and if they feel comfortable entrusting me with their boudoir photos. This initial interaction is also vital to show them the real person behind the camera, especially as most find me through social media or Google.

I encourage them to approach me with any concerns during the planning process, including outfit choices, fostering a friendship-like rapport. Clients are also welcome to bring a close friend to the shoot for added comfort and support. It’s all about creating a genuine connection that allows them to express their unique selves freely and confidently during the shoot.

Your approach focuses on the experience of the shoot, emphasizing that no posing experience is needed. How do you guide clients to feel at ease in front of the camera and ensure a memorable and enjoyable experience for them?

Having posing experience is a bonus, but it’s not necessary for my boudoir shoots. In fact, part of the fun for clients is watching me demonstrate the poses first! I adapt each pose to suit different body types and consider any areas the client might feel self-conscious about.

You’ll often find me trying out poses on the floor or bed, figuring out the best angles and positions before guiding my clients through them. I’m always there to encourage them, offering simple adjustments and cheering them on. It usually gets a good laugh when I’m sprawled out with my camera, exclaiming ‘Yes! Perfect! This is so beautiful!’ – and I genuinely mean it every time. It’s all about making the experience memorable, enjoyable, and empowering for them.

Offering shoots at clients’ homes is a unique aspect of your services. How does shooting in a familiar environment contribute to the overall experience, and what challenges, if any, do you face when shooting on location?

Shooting in a client’s home offers a level of comfort and ease that a studio simply can’t match. Clients feel more relaxed in their own space, lounging in comfy clothes until their hair and makeup are done. Plus, having their personal belongings at hand means there’s no need to pack or rush to a different location. It creates a memorable experience – imagine looking back and remembering yourself all dressed up in your own bed! However, there are challenges.

The biggest one is when clients don’t prepare their space as advised. A tidy environment is crucial for creating the right atmosphere and getting the best shots. Also, having partners or children at home during the shoot can be distracting. I recall a time when I had to clear a bedroom for the shoot while the client’s partner and child were in the living room, which isn’t ideal. It’s important for clients to understand that while I’m there to capture beautiful moments, a cluttered or busy home can detract from both the experience and the final photographs.

In your boudoir photography work, you primarily encourage women to experience the shoot for their own empowerment and enjoyment. However, if a client wishes to do a boudoir shoot as a gift for their partner, would you still recommend this approach?

Absolutely! A boudoir shoot can be both a powerful act of self-empowerment and a beautiful gift for a partner. These two aspects complement each other perfectly. In fact, many of my brides opt for a boudoir session before their wedding day. They not only embrace the empowering experience for themselves but also create a special, intimate gift for their partner, often presented in a stunning photo album.
