Last week, Team Coco got a special seat to see the new Tony Award-winning production of The King & I at the London Palladium and enjoyed an evening of exotic costumes, fantastic singing, and good theatre ol’ spectacle — to the tune of “Shall We Dance” of course.

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s 67 year old musical gets a 2018 makeover care of Bartlett Sher, followed by a successful run of the production at the Lincoln Center. This rendition is led by Ken Watanabe, (from Inception and The Last Samurai fame), who has the inherent regality to play the King of Siam. He is accompanied by Kelli O’Hara, who actually won a Tony Award for her stellar performance as straight laced Victorian era governess, Anna Leonowens.

With countless renditions over the years, from the iconic Yul Brunner version to the rather odd Lou Diamond Phillips one in the mid nineties; one of the main controversies surrounding the King & I has always been how it tackles its morally ambiguous storyline. Beyond the charming romance between Anna and the King, Bartlett Sher’s version also sheds a light on the stark differences between Eastern and Western cultures, as well as the absurdity of The White Man’s burden to civilise the East.A less sophisticated, and more revisionist, production would have framed the issue as Anna “taming” the King’s barbaric ways — to appease to British sentimentalities in order to prevent colonisation, but this production tackles the issue with a nuance that would appease even the most politically correct audience. Today, representation is undeniably important — and as a Chinese-Filipino myself, I was very impressed with how Bartlett Sher cast his ensemble. (No white-washing here at all people!) After “Getting to Know’” (pardon the musical pun) The King & I, I can say that it deftly balances the conflicts between tradition and modernity, spiritualism and science, and finally, love and responsibility.

Overall, Kelli O’Hara, really shone as the virtuous Anna. Naoko Mori as King Mongkut’s first wife, and Na-Young Jeon as Tuptim are also worth mentioning for their fantastic performances. Each one of the women had plenty of chances to shine and each one really took the stage and captivated the audience from the front row all the way to the back. In 1860s Siam, women were seen as mere objects, and Ken Watanabe effectively hammers down King Mongkut’s imperial misogyny with a petulant theatricality throughout the production. So to see these women really have their shining moments on one of London’s biggest West End stages – was a poignant symbolic victory for strong and independent women like Anna Leonowens; and all the other Anna’swho live beyond the stage.

The King & I is on a limited run at The London Palladium. Hannah saw the King & I via superbreak.com tickets start at £78

Seeing a Broadway show is bucket list stuff when visiting New York but some make the experience more special than others.

Here’s what stage productions to see in the Big Apple in 2019 for the ultimate girls trip to NYC.

Mean Girls

Still able to watch Regina George and Cady Heron battle it out over and over again? Then it’s the to watch the girls of North Shore High School on stage, bringing all the best elements of the 2004 movie to life. You won’t be able to leave the theatre without saying “So fetch!” for days after seeing the hilarious tale of a transfer student from Africa, transitioning from homeschooling on the continent to infiltrating the Plastics clique as part of her new life in America.

With the film based on the Queen Bees and Wannabes book by Tina Fey, the comedy star wrote up a version with modern day references including how social media would play a part in the struggles of high school, as The Book of Mormon and Aladdin’s Casey Nicholaw directs.

Block as the artist during the ’80s. Considering her career has spanned five decades, The Cher Show does a good job of cramming her childhood and rise to fame into a few hours.

Fans can sing and dance along to 35 of her tracks performed by an orchestra, as the story of her life – including two husbands and some incredible outfits – will make you wish you could Turn Back Time.

Kinky Boots

What do you get when Grammy Award–winning singer Cyndi Lauper and Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein get together for musical comedy? Kinky Boots.

The musical itself bagged six Tonys in 2013 and it’s inspired by the true story of a man who saves his family’s shoe business by producing sexy women’s footwear. The twist is the heels are for men and he’s helped by drag queen.

Waitress

Based on the film starring Keri Russell about a Southern woman waiting tables with a penchant for making pies, this one is all about following your dreams despite the obstacles.

This musical is set around a marriage without love and unplanned pregnancy, with music from Grammy-nominated singer Sara Bareilles and starring Joey McIntyre from New Kids on the Block fame. From screenwriter Jessie Nelson, it’s directed by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus (Hair), so it’s a guaranteed good time.

The contrast could not be greater. Tai Kwun in Hong Kong was formerly the much-loathed Central Police Station, Magistracy and Victoria Prison. It was a symbol of the colonial times back when Great Britain ruled Hong Kong. Nowadays, it has been revitalised and reopened since 2018 as Tai Kwun. A centre of excellence for heritage and arts.

Located at 10 Hollywood Road, Central. It is mere steps away from the likes of Lan Kwai Fong and the business district. It is a minor miracle, that this prime real estate wasn’t sold off to developers but instead turned into a cultural hub for locals and tourists. Tai Kwun Contemporary is a non-profit visual arts program and they try to curate five to eight exhibitions each year to highlight socially relevant issues. This September, they will present “Killing TV”. It is a fascinating, brand-new exhibition on how modern-day artists deploy, disrupt, and deconstruct television as a medium. The different artists involved in the exhibition explore the themes of identity, consumerism, and human connection in society. This is often displayed in a tongue-in-cheek manner.

The venue is also a wonderful performing arts centre. Throughout September, they have the “Chilled Steps” concert series. In their fourth year, they previously the focus was on jazz music. However, this year, they’ve expanded to cover pop, folk, Western and Chinese music. Between September and October, they are also offering free film screenings of classic teen films from the 1950s to the 1980s. The carefully curated films show the youth of Hong Kong from a bygone era as they embrace the increasing influence of Western culture.

A significant part of the Tai Kwun experience is about the heritage of the site. The former Central Police Station compound had more than 170 years of history. This is brought back to life for the audiences of today through interactive tours, heritage storytelling areas, eclectic education programmes and focused heritage exhibitions. The guided tours are 45 minutes long, in Cantonese, English or Putonghua. It runs twice a day Monday – Friday and three times a day during the weekends. It is also free of charge. They have an insightful behind-the-scenes online section on their website where you can visit the hidden gems of the site. You can see the secret underground passage to the Central Magistracy or see how the compound was once a WWII Air Raid Shelter.

Of course, it isn’t all about education and learning. Tai Kwun is also a great venue to savour gastronomic delights, sample innovative cocktails and shop at independent boutique stores. One of the most Instagrammable restaurants in Hong Kong is based in Tai Kwun, Madame Fù Grand Café Chinois. The refined, colonial decor is matched by tantalising dishes such as sautéed diced Angus beef with Yunnan chilli and garlic. Their free-flowing dim sum offering during lunchtime Monday – Thursday is always popular with locals and tourists alike. The art noveau-inspired, Dragonfly bar offers some of the most innovative cocktails in town. Expect to sip on the likes of Hi Lazies, which contains Irish whisky, pineapple, lime, pimento liqueur, orgeat and baby spinach. It might sound peculiar but their talented mixologists know how to serve up a winning concoction.

Numerous world-class art galleries are also based at Tai Kwun such as Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery and Ora-Ora. The former focuses on 20th-century French art and modern and contemporary art in Asia. While the latter sell groundbreaking, modern art pieces from across the globe. There are also numerous boutique shops on offer such as Pap Studio which sells handmade Turkish-inspired lamps and Touch Ceramics which sells beautifully crafted and handmade ceramics and porcelains.

Although it only opened in 2018, Tai Kwun has rapidly developed into a must-visit destination for tourists when they visit Hong Kong.

Returning to the role of Rachel Marron for a second time, there’s no bigger fan of The Bodyguard than Zoe Birkett and her passion for the role is second to none.

Based on the 1992 romantic thriller film of the same name, the theatre production is an exemplary showcase of the songs of Whitney Houston brought to life by the talented Zoe.

The stellar supporting cast includes Emily-Mae who portrays Rachel’s slightly beleaguered sister Nicki and the charming former Emmerdale and Hollyoaks actor Ayden Callaghan who portrays the gruff titular character of Frank Farmer – the bodyguard brilliantly.

Stepping into a role originally portrayed by Whitney Houston is no easy feat, but Zoe is unfazed and really makes it her own. She is a sensational vocalist and shows what a triple threat she really is with her sublime vocals, dancing and acting all on point.

Her sensitive portrayal of Rachel, a woman who is fighting to live her life to the fullest, despite the threat from a mysterious stalker is feisty, but Zoe plays the role with an intoxicating playfulness that really makes the audience root for her and her adorable son played by the fantastic Kaylen Luke who is making his professional theatre debut as Fletcher.

Emily-Mae who portrays Nicki Marron is captivating and hits the spot of Rachel’s overlooked sister exquisitely. She has her chance to shine on a few different numbers including ‘All the Man that I Need’ and duetting with Zoe/Rachel too and sings with a real emotional elegance, particularly with her part of the duet of ‘Saving All My Love For You’.

Supported by a fantastic cast and ensemble which includes the wonderful Marios Nicolaides as Rachel’s stalker who plays the role with a real sense of sinister brilliance.

From toe-tapping numbers like ‘I’m Every Woman’ to ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody’ to mesmerising  power ballads like ‘Run to You’, ‘One Moment in Time’ and, of course, that classic tearjerker ‘I Will Always Love You’.

This was a first-class production and has it all – romance, intrigue and of course a huge selection of Whitney Houston classics which all make for a fantastic night out.

The Bodyguard is at Bournemouth Pavilion until 12th August 2023 – more information and tickets can be found here. Other tour dates can be found here.

Following a phenomenally successful, record-breaking run in London’s West End and subsequent sell-out tour, The Commitments comes to Leeds Grand Theatre from Mon 19 – Sat 24 June 2023.

The world’s hardest working and most explosive soul band is set to return in this all-new stage production based on the BAFTA award-winning film classic adapted from the novel by Booker prize-winning author Roddy Doyle.

This fantastically feel-good celebration of soul features an electric playlist, showcasing more than 20 soul classics performed live on stage, including Night Train, Try A Little Tenderness, River Deep, Mountain High, In The Midnight Hour, Papa Was A Rolling Stone, Save Me, Mustang Sally, I Heard It Through The Grapevine, Thin Line Between Love and Hate, Reach Out, Uptight, Knock On Wood, I Can’t Turn You Loose and many more!

The smash-hit musical will star Coronation Street legend Nigel Pivaro, who appeared in the hugely popular ITV soap between 1983 – 2012 as the lovable rogue Terry Duckworth. He will be swapping the cobbles for the stage and performing the role of ‘Da’ in this all-new production.

Nigel Pivaro says: “I am thrilled to be marking my return to the stage in this production of The Commitments. It’s an iconic story that resonates across the years, about people who though distant from the music’s origins find communion and expression in the Motown style, a musical genre that was borne out of oppression and which the characters embrace as their own. The Motown Sound is as vibrant today as it was when it first burst through in the Sixties.”

Roddy Doyle added: “I’m delighted that The Commitments is coming back in 2022 & 2023 and I’m particularly looking forward to seeing how Nigel Pivaro tackles the part of Jimmy Rabbitte’s Da.”

The Commitments tour is directed by Andrew Linnie. Andrew made his West End debut in the original production in 2013, playing the role of Dean, the band’s sax player. He then went on to star in the lead role of Jimmy Rabitte in the 2016/2017 UK tour.

Joining the cast as Deco is Olivier Award nominee Ian McIntosh. Ian is no stranger to this role, having previously played Alternate Deco during the original West End run. Previous credits include Galileo in the UK tour of We Will Rock You, Sid Worley in An Officer and a Gentleman and he was Olivier-nominated for ‘Best Supporting Actor in a Musical’ for his role as Barry in Beautiful – The Carole King Musical. His extensive musical career has also seen him perform in Hair and Can’t Buy Me Love.

The Commitments tells the story of Jimmy Rabbitte, a young working-class music fan, who transforms an unlikely bunch of amateur musicians into an amazing live act, which becomes the finest soul band Dublin has ever produced. Placing a classified advert in a music paper, Jimmy auditions several wannabes before finalising the members of his new band, which he names ‘The Commitments’.

Humour kicks in as the band get to know each other and their instruments, grappling with inter-group differences as they muddle their way through early rehearsals for the band’s first gig. Just as they improve and begin to get a name for themselves, they combust. The backing singers are more interested in the middle-aged horn-playing legend, the singer has entered Eurovision, the drummer has walked out mid-gig and the saxophone player has dangerous leanings towards a jazz career.

The Commitments is a guaranteed ‘fabulously-fun night’ (Daily Mail) that you will simply never forget.

The Commitments is at Leeds Grand Theatre from Monday 19 to Saturday 24 June 2023. Book online at leedsheritagetheatres.com or call the Box Office on 0113 243 0808.

Team Coco whipped out our best dancing shoes as we were transported back to the roaring twenties for an evening with London Cabaret Club. Set in the heart of Bloomsbury, London Cabaret Club is unlike any other show on the West End and offers a fully immersive experience unlike any other.

As soon as you step inside Victoria House, you enter the world of Great Gatsby. From the art-deco inspired motifs, classic cocktails, to the absolute showmanship of the performances, London Cabaret Club is certainly dinner and show with a difference.

Our evening’s theme was ‘All About Gatsby’ and started with aperitifs at the cocktail lounge. Here, you are welcomed with a cocktail of your choice and greeted by perfectly quaffed actors and actresses dressed in period clothing. A chanteuse serenades guests before they are led into the main ballroom, where the show gets ready to tantalise.

Playing fast and loose with the source material, what the show lacks in narrative accuracy it certainly makes up for in style. The singers filled the vast ballroom with their stellar performances, while the dancers chasséd and pas de bourreed the hell out of tha dazzling choreography, oozing enough charisma to reach even the furthest tables.

Each set was choreographed to outdo the last performance. Between aerial performances, doggy talent shows, tap dancing and acrobatics that would surely rival Cirque du Soleil, there was plenty to feast your eyes on at the London Cabaret Club.

The three course set menu celebrated classic British cuisine with a twist. We started off with amuse-bouche, followed by a smoked salmon starter then a fillet steak with chips, finishing with a delightful chocolate dessert. The meal, which was undoubtedly delicious, wasn’t exactly breaking any new ground in the culinary world, but what surely amazes at London Cabaret Club is that it offers an entertaining escape from the day to day.

So, you are looking for some escapism of your own, and maybe to time travel to the roaring twenties and really get wowed by a truly spectacular show, then we could not recommend London Cabaret Club more. After all, a little party never killed nobody?
