Today we’re talking alternative careers if you won the lottery and finding a great bunch of humans to grow your company with. Let’s jump in with Kirsty Jarvis at Luminous PR.

House of Coco: Great to meet you, Kirsty; fill us in, what’s your elevator pitch for Luminous PR?

Kirsty: Luminous PR is a tech PR agency that works with fast-growth, and innovative companies working in the technology, innovation and digital space.

HOC: And where did your journey to running Luminous PR start; what was your first job?

Kirsty: My first job was actually whilst I was at University – I was a weekend store manager for a flagship Oxford Street, London retail store. Although this is very different to what I’m doing now, it gave me my first real experience of managing a team. After that I worked for a high-end kitchen design company that supplied kitchens and furniture to the rich and famous. Again, it was nothing like my current career path, but it gave me valuable experience of working hard and the importance of confidence!

HOC: From those beginnings, how did you come to starting your own PR company?

Kirsty: Before founding Luminous I was a freelance marketing, communications and PR consultant and was already comfortable with the feeling of being responsible for generating my own work and handling clients month-to-month.

Freelancing is great, but can be lonely at times and I missed being part of something bigger. I decided to build an agency because I wanted to be part of a team of people like me, all striving towards a common goal. So, Luminous was born.

HOC: Couldn’t agree more! What is about your industry that you love?

Kirsty: Luminous is a tech specialist PR agency, so I’m lucky enough to work with some brilliant people, doing amazing things with technology. This means I’m constantly learning, and frequently inspired by companies that are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in an effort to improve our world.

Also, the work itself is exciting. Done right, a carefully planned media campaign makes a big impact for the people we work with. It’s a privilege to take that journey with a client, and incredibly rewarding to witness how the campaigns we deliver are part of helping that business to grow.

And finally, my team are just the best bunch of humans, and they make it fun showing up every day!

HOC: Who would be your dream client?

Kirsty: I could describe my dream client but pinning it down to just one brand is really hard. But my favourite type of client is one that leads me to learn something new. I’ve been working with technology businesses for a long time and I feel I have a good grasp of what is emerging.

A client that’s doing something completely new — never been done before stuff — is an absolute dream. Journalists love it, we love learning about it, and you really feel part of something exciting when you get a project that ticks those boxes.

HOC: If you weren’t doing this, what could have career plan B looked like?

Kirsty: I occasionally perform as a jazz singer, so if I won the lottery I would absolutely do a lot more of that. I’ve always been a singer and I’ve always thought that doing that is probably the thing that I love doing more than anything else. I love the fact that every performance is a one off and the creativity that comes from your soul!

I did it professionally for a while but it’s a tough career with really unsociable hours that don’t work around trying to run a PR agency. But lottery wins aside, I enjoy applying my skills and experience to help fledgeling businesses and entrepreneurs with PR challenges so if I wasn’t running Luminous PR, I would probably explore my options as a comms coach.

HOC: Your team (from your site) looks lady-heavy! What is this magic that happens when women work together?

Kirsty: It’s true that we have many fabulous women working at Luminous, but our site is currently being updated to reveal a couple of equally fabulous guys who have joined the team in the last 12 months!

PR is naturally dominated by women so I think this is part of why we have more chicks than guys. But I think we have naturally attracted more women candidates for each job role because of the way we have set up the business to support flexibility and remote working. This obviously works really well for mothers who want to continue developing their careers but equally want to be around for the important parts of their children’s days.

I’ve always been 100% in favour of creating a culture that’s as flexible as possible so we can be around family. I also know how important work/life balance is. It took a sharp focus and lots of thought about processes and connectivity to be able to get this flexible working infrastructure in place. But now that it’s getting there we’ve been able to attract some amazing talent that perhaps wouldn’t usually consider a boutique agency like Luminous, just because they want a more flexible working life. It’s a win-win really.

HOC: What are your favourite productivity hacks?

Kirsty: I sometimes find it hard to carve out enough time to work out, so I walk as much as I can. The commute to the office is 4 miles and often I will put on my trainers and walk in, listening to a book on the way, to ensure I’m not just sat on my butt all day. 4 miles sounds like a long way but it takes just over an hour and gives me time to learn from business audio books that I wouldn’t otherwise have time to read.

Investing time in ensuring that your phone, laptop, iPad, whatever is seamlessly syncing and working together properly is an absolute must for me. I am on the move a lot, so I need to know that whatever device I have with me, I can access any file, campaign folder or invoice I need.

HOC: Does work/life balance exist?

Kirsty: I believe it can, but you have to work hard at it. Life has a habit of pulling you in and before you know it, you’ve worked a 60 hour week and you’ve had no time for yourself. This is especially true if you run a business because you are always trying to keep up with everything you need to do. If you let it, work can consume every waking minute you have (and sometimes the non-waking minutes too). When it starts to affect your sleep, you have to set the balance right so I’m now pretty strict with myself about trying to keep work out of my home life, and setting habits and routines that ensure I keep up with mindfulness and fitness . Technology is great for reminding you about this.

HOC: The ’10 years ago’ challenge is all the rage on insta at the moment, what advice do you have for the 2009 you?

Kirsty: Ha! What wouldn’t I say?! The biggest thing I’ve learnt over the last 10 years is that you always achieve more than you think is possible so be brave and just get on with it. The other thing I would do is to reassure the younger me that resilience is one of her super powers. Being fearless and taking some risks isn’t as scary as she thinks because she’s pretty good at powering on no matter what is thrown at her. Not knowing this in my youth definitely held me back, and I would now tell anyone that they should back themselves if the taking a brave step leads to a future they want for themselves.

Sometimes a difficult period in your life can lead to unexpected, positive outcomes and that’s certainly the case with today’s inspirational #GirlBoss, Donia Youssef who runs two fantastic businesses; publishing house Tiny Angels Press Ltd which publishes her The Monster Seriesbooks and leading child modelling agency Tiny Angels.

House of Coco: Great to meet you, Donia! Can you tell us about your journey to running two businesses; Tiny Angels & The Monster Series?

Donia: I started my company Tiny Angel Models Ltd back in March 2013 when my eldest daughter was 10 months old. I had been working for Lord Alan Sugar for some time and this experience inspired me to set up my own company and take control over my own destiny! When my daughter was 4 months old she had started baby modelling so I gained a lot of experience in how this industry works and I felt I had enough experience and contacts for me to take the plunge.

I started by setting up and creating a basic website and then, as things progressed, I was able to employ staff and invest in new websites, management systems etc. From little acorns mighty oak trees grow as we now we are one of the top leading child modelling agencies in London!

In April 2017, my life took a turn I could never have expected. Aged just 39 years old I was diagnosed with breast cancer. To say this threw a spanner in the works is an understatement! As a Mummy to my then five year old and two year old daughters; I found it really hard knowing what to say to my very young children – how to explain what was going on, what Mummy was going through, and why, when I lost my hair and looked so different, this was all happening… So, I decided I wanted to make them feel special.

And so The Monster in Mummywas born. I wanted to publish the book and get it out their as a resource for others in a similar position to me to enable parents to communicate a cancer diagnosis to very young children. Within 48 hours the book became an instant bestseller on Amazon! Just as the book started to take off, a film producer happened to hear my story and wanted to tell it! A feature film of The Monster in Mummy is currently in the pipeline – so watch this space!

HOC: That’s incredible, how you turned such a tricky life moment into an opportunity for yourself, your family – and for others!

Donia: Thank you, yes the success of the book was amazing and just emphasised what I knew – that there was definitely a gap in the market for these books. My family had needed this tool and I was then even more passionate about spreading the book’s word and getting it out their to give as many families as possible this tool.

Back in my early working life I had worked in the publishing sector for about fifteen years. At this point in my life I realised I could draw on my publishing background and develop the Monster series further to take it to as wide an audience as possible. So I decided to launch my own publishing company, Tiny Angels Press Ltd. We are a publishing company dedicated solely for cancer patients to give them a platform to tell and share their stories. Telling someone’s story is an incredibly empowering feeling and also one of feeling in control – both feelings that are few and far between when you are given a cancer diagnosis. At this point in time I was now fortunate enough to have been given the all clear, but that feeling of helpless lack of control is one you never forget and I wanted desperately to do something to help those who were still living that horrific part of the illness.

HOC: And how have you changed personally during this journey?

Donia: It’s crazy by my entire outlook on my life and career has changed since my diagnosis. Even though cancer may rob us of that blissful ignorance that once led us to believe that tomorrow stretched out forever, in exchange we are granted the vision to see each day as a precious gift to be used wisely and richly. And no one can take that away from us. With this in mind I dreamt big in every aspect of my life. Nothing was going to stop me. I wanted to help all those with a cancer diagnosis by giving them this platform.

People don’t always realise that when you are going through your cancer treatment you have many wonderful, caring professionals around you guiding you through every step of the process; they are absolute heroes. But while you pray for remission, once in remission you are left on your own and this can be very frightening place to be. Alone with your thoughts of all you have been through, all that has changed and with the constant thought of is the cancer going to come back?

HOC: In addition to your two businesses, you have a family. How do you balance it all?

Donia: I am not going to lie, it can be challenging. However, over time I have learnt to outsource work. This gives me the room to be able to take on different projects. I have an amazing team of people currently running the modelling agency which has enabled me to be able to concentrate on my publishing company. Being highly organised within the working environment is crucial. Outsourcing is also key to keeping everything ticking over and keeping standards high.

HOC: If you weren’t doing this, what could have career plan B looked like?

Donia: I have always been one for new ideas and creativity. I knew I always wanted to set up my own company in some capacity, but I’ve never planned these things. Timing tends to present the right people at the right time and I just follow my passion. Funnily, when I left school I studied as a dental technician, so I guess if I had stuck fast to my original plan I would be in a laboratory making false teeth today!

HOC: You are obviously a very strong and determined person, how do you keep your energy up; do you have any tips for our readers?

Donia: Yes, eliminate toxic people in your life, do what you LOVE and always try your hardest to eliminate any negativity from your life. Sleep to me is crucial so you can physically and mentally concentrate. Learn to have barriers and know when to switch off. Planning is super important and structuring your days and time efficiently to projects.

Lucozade and Mars bars are also a great energy boost and if that fails a strong gin & tonic usually does the trick!

HOC: What are your ambitions for your brands this year?

Donia: I currently have six books in production, so I am looking to expand this. I am in talks with various people who have had a cancer diagnosis and are keen to tell their story. I have just started a podcast, and I am also a regular columnist for the Sovereign Global magazine, which I am really enjoying as will be an opportunity for the Monster brand to reach an even bigger audience.

Regarding my children’s modelling and acting agency, the agency is going from strength to strength and we have recently devised a fun day’s scheme where children can come to develop their confidence skills. I am expanding the business further and have recently launched an adult division of the agency. We are currently working hard on expanding this division, so it really is an exciting time.

HOC: You are the personification of a ‘multi-hyphenate’; do you have any productivity hacks we can nab from you?

Donia: Yes! Why not try these tips:

  1. For those days when you just can’t seem to get focused: Instead of starting with the most time-consuming or disliked responsibilities, try knocking the top five easiest tasks off your To-Do List. You’ll feel like a sense of accomplishment and will be more motivated to take on more comprehensive work.
  2. Use a clock: Try working in a 90-minute cycle and setting your alarm for 75 minutes. Use the last 15 minutes to wrap things up; make notations etc. It also gives the chance to shuffle things around if you decide to continue working on your current project.
  3. Block your time on a calendar: Scheduling your tasks on a calendar – instead of in your head or on a piece of paper – can help keep you focused and on time. When it’s possible, leave yourself between 15 and 30 minutes between each project to return phone calls or emails or have a chat with a co-worker. This way you’re not slammed at the end of the day.
  4. Manage the distractions – Allow yourself to check your email and voice messages one last time before you being working than turn them off. Send your calls to voicemail and schedule an automatic email to send when someone’s emailed you. Make sure you include instructions for what to do if they have an emergency.
  5. Work when you’re the most effective – If you write a business report better in the morning, get to work a little earlier than normal. Work better after your co-workers leave for the day? Pick one-day a week to stay a little later.

HOC: Finally, the ’10 years ago’ challenge is all the rage on insta at the moment, what advice do you have for the 2019 you?

Donia: I’d definitely advise myself to spend more time with my family and invest more time into their education and well-being.

Here at House of Coco we particularly love when we meet entrepreneurs who have married their expertise in an industry and passions to create something that fills a gap in the market. Today we’re talking to Charlotte who co-founded Tatti Lashes with best friend Elliot. The brand has gone from running out of a small basement to taking part in the famous beauty event Beautycon in LA. Let’s find out Charlotte’s secrets…

House of Coco: Charlotte you’re the ultimate Girlboss, tell us the story behind the brand and how you got in to it…

Charlotte: It was just after I had my first son Teddie that my best friend Elliot and I came up with the idea of Tatti Lashes. We both owned our own salons but were working long demanding hours. I didn’t want to spend so much time away from my family and I wanted to work on something I was truly passionate about that was in my control. I was a lash technician doing semi-permanent eyelashes day in day out – I wanted to come up with a lash that cut out salon time but gave the same effect as Russian volume eyelashes.

We then started with our pre-fanned volume lashes – mimicking the technique of Russian volume Eyelashes. Lash technicians could just apply these lashes rather than creating fans themselves (which was very time consuming) appointment spaces then went from 2.5 hours to 1 hour. Benefiting not only lash technicians being cost effective, but clients as it made their treatment a lot quicker. From then, we started testing and researching strip designs and secured a manufacturer.

From there – Tatti Lashes was born!

HOC: What’s the most popular product that you sell?

Charlotte: Our best-selling lashes are TL3 & TL4 – both have been a success since they day they launched.

Since Kim Kardashian West wore TL19, we have been low on stock ever since – it just keeps selling out!

HOC: Can you tell us more about your journey before founding Tatti Lashes?

Charlotte: My business partner and best friend, Elliot and I have worked in the beauty industry our entire careers. From being a lash technician, I saw a gap in the market. We initially set out to rejuvenate the lash sector after years of extensive testing and research. Our aim was to create a product with an emphasis on quality, style and affordability for consumers and makeup artists that catered for everyone. Makeup artists were such an import focus for us and they have played a huge factor in our success as a brand. We were the first ever lash brand to offer 60% off to our loyal MUA’s and continue to do so.

HOC: What has been the biggest struggle since launching Tatti Lashes?

Charlotte: There’s been plenty but I would say the biggest struggle has been evolving and growing the brand in such a short space of time and keeping up with our order demands. We have been so lucky to have instant success – we never envisioned the brand would grow to the scale it’s at now.

In just two years, the brand has become international, we are retailed in 89 countries across the globe and are working on numerous collaborations and global events. We started out from a small basement and now have taken over two huge units with 30 x staff helping us bring the brand to life!

Elliot and I have an incredibly hands on approach and are involved in every area of the business. We have different opinions on lots of things but always manage to make the right one to benefit the brand. Our working relationship is very important to us as we respect each other so much. It’s a dream come true to work with your best friend. We pride ourselves on creativity – we try to break the beauty boundaries and stand out from our competitors.

I recently had my second son Toby who is only 4 months old. As the brand is growing and it’s so incredibly busy, I couldn’t take a proper maternity leave so I was back in the office from 6 weeks. This was a huge challenge for me as I had to manage so many important areas of my life to make it all work. The juggle is real with two little boys and a global lash empire to run! I am so lucky to have the support of Elliot who really held down the fort while I was off along with my husband and family who have supported me fully from day one.

Establishing a work life balance that worked for me, my business partner and my family is something I’m really proud of. I absolutely love my job and I’m so passionate about Tatti Lashes. I consider myself very blessed.

HOC: What has been your favourite collection to work on so far?

Charlotte: We have had great success through our collaboration with influencer MMMMitchell – we launched an exclusive luxury 4D lash that he designed last Summer and it sold out instantly and is still one of our most popular lashes to date. We have such a great relationship with him and every project we work on together is a joy. He is now our official brand ambassador so we have some really exciting projects coming up with him this year.

HOC: Who would be your dream celebrity to work with?

Charlotte: We are very lucky to have such amazing celebrities wearing our lashes. Our ultimate goal was to have Kim Kardashian West wear our lashes and she wore them twice in December. Ariana Grande also regularly wears the lashes and has worn them for some iconic moments in her career such as her two most recent music videos and her Grammy appearance.

It is our dream to sign a celebrity ambassador and this is something we are already talking about. Watch this space!

HOC: Can you tell us about a recent ‘Girl Boss’ moment?

Charlotte: Wow – there’s been so many. Having the Kardashian’s wear our lashes was a really proud moment for me.

HOC: What has been the hardest part of running your own online business?

Charlotte: Keeping up with the sale demands for sure!

HOC: What’s in the pipeline for 2019?

Charlotte: We have such an exciting year ahead – already we have accomplished so much and are in the midst of some very exciting conversations. I can’t reveal too much, but we have some VERY exciting shoots coming up, another collaboration lash launching this Summer, a masterclass with our ambassador; MMMMitchell, and we are partaking in Beautycon LA which we are all so excited about. America is an important territory to us – a quarter of our revenue comes from the States so California particularly will be seeing a lot more of us this year!

For some of us starting our own business is not on the agenda, for others, it’s in our blood. We sat down with Lucie Marchelot Shukla, a master of reinvention and serial entrepreneur to discover the story behind her newest enterprise, Straight Teeth Direct™

HOC: Great to meet you, Lucie! Can you tell us about your journey to creating Straight Teeth Direct™ ? I see you have started businesses before, would love to know about your ‘serial entrepreneur’ journey….

Lucie: Yes! I have changed my career and industry quite a few times. I studied Law and then moved to London to study Art History at Christie’s. I worked for a leading auction house for a short while and very quickly realised that it wasn’t for me ; the corporate environment or the industry. In truth, I didn’t feel challenged enough.

I realised that I needed to do something else; entrepreneurship had always been my end goal and I thought why not now, after 1 year of working and training! I started my first business, completely alone. It was called the Indian Art Centre and it was an online gallery selling Indian antiques. I did everything from building my website, doing my PR, my own social media. I really enjoyed working on the business growth. But it wasn’t an exciting enough business or growth potential in that industry for a 25 year old. You also don’t feel like you are helping anyone; it’s not transformative and I didn’t feel fulfilled.

So that’s when I decided to join my husband and business partner at his private dental clinic in London. I was managing sales, marketing and operations; I really enjoyed this and helped grow the business; we doubled and sold it in 2016 and had discovered the cheapest way to straighten teeth! Because we had created a strong system to grow sales and attract the right kind of patient – adults looking to get straight teeth, quickly, without much inconvenience and without a super high price tag – we could support other dental practices to do the same. We created a marketing agency to help other dentists grow their businesses and help more people get straight teeth with online training courses, events and done for you systems. It worked really well but again, it was more like a lifestyle business; you couldn’t really scale it. We were looking for something with a global potential and we found that with Straight Teeth Direct™ !

So it’s been about transitioning from a lifestyle business to a high growth business; with a product, not just a service. Our business combines manufacturing, logistics and the digital platform ; it’s much broader and scalable than my previous businesses. Since we launched to the public in S/S 2017 we have had users from over 43 countries!

HOC: Who is Straight Teeth Direct for?

Lucie: Our solution is for busy professional who love to have everything delivered to them! The majority of our users are female at the moment but more and men are joining us. A lot of our users are people that haven’t been wearing their retainers and want to get their ideal smiles back.

Others travel a lot and might start treatment in one country and then need to move. They like our solution as it’s convenient and there’s no interruption in their treatment, or additional cost. At the end of the day, we attract people looking for a confidence and self-esteem boost through looking and feeling good.

HOC: Why did you create Straight Teeth Direct?

Lucie: As you saw in our first question; I love a challenge! I am ambitious and have big plans for my future. Straight Teeth Direct™ business model allows us to really transform an industry which is rewarding on both a personal entrepreneurial journey level and also more widely; we can reach and help so many more people to feel their best.

Being in the industry with our previous businesses, we saw there were clear problems to be solved and that’s what we’re here to do.

We saw the need coming for our service through our work in the industry; we would have many enquiries that wouldn’t get resolved ; in the end, to get treatment at a small practice is still quite expensive. From the other side, we knew Dentists wanted to work less and earn more and our solutions works with them in a smart way with a digital layer, not against them ; so Straight Teeth Direct™ helps both sides!

HOC: What was your very first job (when you were 15/16), can you see any relation to what you are doing now?

Lucie: If I really think back to when I was 15,16 ; I was helping out at my Dad’s business; a pharmacy. I was taking it super seriously and that’s something that really stuck with me! I always really care about what I do, whatever I’m doing. I also worked in a shoe shop in Greece when I did my Erasmus; I’ll always give it my 100%!

My Dad has always been my role model, in terms of entrepreneurship. He always inspired me to be my own boss. He was one of the first in his region to use robots to deliver medication to the counters! He always wanted to stay ahead of the game and inspired me to be a risk taker.

I have two siblings and we are all entrepreneurs- it’s the mindset we’ve picked up from our Dad. He really educated us to not take things for granted; you’ve got to work hard!

HOC: If you weren’t doing this, what could have career plan B looked like?

Lucie: It would have to be as an entrepreneur as I would never see myself working for someone! It’s in my blood!

I guess, if it had to be something absolutely different to having and growing a business I would say being a professional dancer.

HOC: I see on your LinkedIn that “being called a “female” entrepreneur can irritate you”, can you tell us more about this?

Lucie: I’m happy that we’re discussing this! In truth; I could talk about this for hours! This point around being a ‘Girl Boss’ or ‘Female Entrepreneur’ is not black or white and there are lots of different viewpoints; I certainly don’t want to upset anyone but I worry that always speaking about gender is limiting.

My thinking is that I don’t like labels or putting myself into a box that could restrict me in any way. We don’t have such a thing as dadpreneur so I don’t see why women should be constantly referred to as female entrepreneur or mumpreneur . Personally, I’ve never felt strongly about belonging to female groups or having female only mentors; my Dad was my role model and I have equally been inspired by strong independent women.

I feel that it’s dangerous to restrict yourself and limit your mindset. You could think ‘because I’m a female…’, you see everything through the eye of a female. Yes, I get sexist comments at work but I want to be recognised for my talents and achievements but not because ‘you’re female and we feel sorry for you, so we’re going to give you an award.’

It’s a delicate topic and we have to do things and raise awareness. Of course, in Europe we are privileged whereas in other parts of the world things are much much worse for women.

In Europe, I don’t see being female as a weakness, it’s a strength. When we have meetings with investors, and I’m in a room with 10 men and I’m the only woman, that empowers me.

HOC: What are your ambitions for your brand this year?

Lucie: So much is happening! We are doing a tube campaign and launching in major department stores across Europe this quarter. I’m so excited to see the response from our new retail model and keep experimenting with new channels. The goal is for our brand to be recognised as a leading e-commerce / leader in the aligner space in Europe by the end of the year…

HOC: How do you keep your energy and motivation up?

Lucie: Energy wise I used to go to the gym but with all the traveling and unexpected schedule it’s impossible to stick to sessions. So I try to stick to a few things:

  • I am instead trying to keep my anxiety levels down with regular massages. I also eat super healthy; I’m all about an organic meat-free lifestyle.
  • I also start my day, every day, with a small simple breathing and movement routine.

I am giving everything to this business at the moment and I know it is for a short number of years. Unlike with a lifestyle business, you know a high growth phase is not going to last forever, so that keeps me motivated! My immediate motivation is to see our customer satisfaction and positive feedback about their transformation and experience using our platform!

HOC: Your business marries technology and great customer service, what tech is exciting you at the moment outside of your product?

Lucie: I like tech that is useful and beautiful; I love to watch the direct to consumer space; that really excites me. I’m always looking for the new trends and getting inspiration.

I really like what’s happening in beauty tech with devices as well as in health; doing your own high end facial or taking your DNA at home, for instance. I’d love to see more innovation in fashion and retail. I went to a Reformation store in NYC and oh, I was so excited; I was taking a picture of everything!

Their store really inspired me and made me think about how we do things differently. They have a screen where you can choose your items to try on and then the items are already in the changing room! If you want another size you just select on screen in the changing room, close the wardrobe and then the rail automatically updates with your choice. It’s just really cool.

Everyone else in the store was all cool, waiting for their turn. And I was like, what is going to happen next?!

HOC: The ’10 years ago’ challenge is all the rage on insta at the moment, what advice do you have for the 2009 you?

Lucie: I’ve got two pieces of advice that might help others.

One, I would tell my younger self to keep going; you don’t need 10 years of experience to have the knowledge to do something great. You will learn along the way if you are committed to it. You will have to make sacrifices, of course. And remember, everything you learn along the way, will be transferable. Initially I thought oh god, I studied these subjects; I have to do something in this space. But actually, I learnt how to be structured from Law and developed my aesthetic eye through my Art degree ; now I use both in my work with Straight Teeth Direct™ every day! You don’t have to wait and have a long plan. Honestly, you don’t learn that much if you work for someone else; you have to get your hands dirty!

Secondly, my advice is to never regret anything, everything is a learning and growth experience. I would never wish I had done something differently.

Our #GirlBossesOfGreatBritain span across so many industries, and so many parts of the UK. From humble artisan studios to extravagant work spaces, as long as you have a passion and turn it into a pay-check, you’re a #GirlBoss in our eyes. One industry that is paving the way for independent girl bosses is the confectionary industry, as many of these brands are developing from home kitchens across the country. Claire Brennan, founder of What The Fudge is a shining example of how one little idea, can turn into being featured in Vogue. Our writer Jenna caught up with the confectionary mogul to discuss how WTF was founded and what’s next…

________________________________________________________________

JC: So after reading a little bit more about you and What The Fudge, we love that you do things the old-fashioned way and hand produce each batch. Why is the artisan way important to you?

CB: The taste says it all! I believe in creating the highest quality products possible, something, which can’t be found in shops or easily replicated. This is what makes us truly unique. The method we use takes a very long time to make, but the results speak for themselves.

JC: They definitely do! We see that it was actually your friends who suggested you turn your passion into a pay check – was there a specific moment when you decided to create What The Fudge?

CB: I think when I received such good feedback; it made me wonder if it could become a job for me. I really enjoyed creating new flavour combinations, and developed a passion and drive that I hadn’t experienced before.

JC: Can you tell us more about your history before founding WTF?

CB: Before WTF, I had had a few part time jobs, as our children were still young. We have four children, so a lot of my time was spent looking after them before they were at an age when they could attend school.

JC: It’s awesome to see that your fudge is Gluten Free, would you ever delve into Vegan/Dairy Free products?

CB: I would love to, but we simply don’t have the time or space at present – which is a shame!

JC: Your ‘Core Blimey’ range has definitely got our attention as well as our mouths watering! How did you come up with that concept?

CB: I wanted something luxurious, and to incorporate fudge into a jar that would look nice as gifts. Layering sweets inside seemed too simple and not creative enough for me! That’s when I thought about adding a core right down the centre of the jar, finished with more treats on top. Our Core Blimey Jars have even been in Vogue magazine!

JC: If it’s good enough for Vogue, it’s definitely good enough for #TeamCoco! Who would be your dream stockist or brand ambassador?

CB: I haven’t really thought about this as I don’t think I could ever make enough! I’d like to stay quite an exclusive brand, maybe one day eventually stocking in artisan cafes/restaurants.

JC: Can you tell us about a recent ‘Girl Boss’ moment?

CB: Every day! I feel so lucky being able to support my family from my ideas. My husband has been able to leave his full job and join me in working in the kitchen, this is what I’m proud of. Also, being in vogue magazine 3 times! Can’t forget that!

JC: What has been the hardest part of running your own online business?

CB: Being “discovered”. I started back in November 2014, it is only over the last 12 months that we have grown to a significant level. Perseverance has been key as I struggle keeping up with the admin side of things. When you get 100s of messages a day and work at least 14-hour days, there isn’t always a lot of time to get that kind of thing done.

JC: What’s in the pipeline for 2019?

CB: I love getting creative in the kitchen; this means there are always lots of new products to test out! Our range already includes fudge slices, Core Blimey jars, stuffed fudge wheels, loaves, chocolate bark, create your own items and so much more, so it’s exciting to see what we come up with next!

It can be a common misconception that, in order to make money, you need money. Lucy Hilson smashes this out the water with the incredible success she’s seen with both Cosmetic PR and SKN REHAB– read on to learn some of her Girl Boss wisdom!

HOC: Great to speak with you, Lucy! Tell us about your business Cosmetic PR…

Lucy: I’d love to! I launched Cosmetic PR back in 2015. I have over 15 years experience in Beauty PR and a real passion for skincare, skin treatments, and in particular more advanced treatments such as laser rejuvenation, skin peels, PRP and aesthetic treatments. With this love for everything cosmetic, I saw a gap in the market for aesthetic specialist PR: there were no other PR agencies with this niche and it’s an industry that was and still is growing rapidly.

So – with nothing but an iPhone and a notebook – Cosmetic PR was born. I had the idea and knew what I wanted to do but had no savings to invest, nor did I want outside investors. So I saved up enough to buy a laptop and started to contact beauty brands that could be potential clients. Days later my first client signed up, followed by a second, a third, and so on…

We’re just going through a rebrand and the new website just launched! We’re now more focused on aesthetics and skincare whereas before our site was more mass market. When I launched Cosmetic PR the plan was to have a strong beauty and medical aesthetics niche, so I’m just taking it back to that original vision. This the heart of the business – we stay true to our passion and focussed on our area of expertise.

My dream client would probably be Dr Simon Ourian! Or the guys from (the TV show) Botched; they always seem to be enjoying their work. I’m also skincare obsessed and would love to work on a brand like ZO Skin Health.

HOC: And you are also the founder of SKN REHAB?

Lucy: Yes, my love for skincare and skin treatments led me to meet my now business partners and ultimately to the launch of SKN REHAB. We all have a background in the beauty industry and between us we’ve probably tried every treatment going! We were hooked on cosmeceutical skincare and results-driven treatments and wanted to create something that would combine our favourite treatments for powerful and effective results.

The SKN REHAB machine combines 5 different technologies that target and treat specific skin concerns (from Diamond Microdermabrasion to Pure Oxygen and LED) We use the 5 different technologies together with potent active ingredients which we drive into the skin using a mild electrical current. The results are amazing! My knowledge of the skin, ingredients and how they worked certainly helped with the development stages of SKN REHAB. With my background in Beauty PR I also had the knowledge of what would be appealing to the UK press, what sort of story each product needed and what would look good on the pages of a magazine. When we created SKN REHAB we knew we wanted a serious product line, but didn’t want to stick with the usual ‘clinical’ look & feel of a serious skincare brand.

HOC: It you weren’t doing this, what could have career plan B looked like?

Lucy: My working life started working in a clothes shop on the King’s Road, 3 days a week at 16. I didn’t love it but it taught me the value of money and I got a great discount on clothes which was the main reason I worked there!

In an alternate life, I would love to be in the FBI solving murder cases! It’s a bit weird I know but I’ve always been fascinated with shows like Forensic Files. Or maybe I’d just travel the world and start mini business ventures everywhere I go. I truly believe you can make a successful business out of anything – it’s about finding your passion and just making it work!

HOC: Now you have a little one, how has this impacted the way you work?

Lucy: My son was actually my driving force behind starting Cosmetic PR! I had become a single parent and was struggling on the salary I was on at the time. I was practically working just to pay his childcare costs (which are extremely high in London) and was living in a tiny one bedroom flat just making ends meet. I wanted more for us both and I knew I had to do something to give us a better life. Creating Cosmetic PR was the perfect solution, not only did it allow me to live my passion but it gave me the flexibility I needed being a sole parent.

Running the business was a challenge at the start because my son was just one when I started the business and still didn’t sleep through the night; so I was up all night (several times a night) with him and working on my business all day. Now he’s five and is in school so it’s much easier to get work done without falling asleep at my desk!

HOC: You must have crazy busy days, what hacks do you have for running your business smoothly?

Lucy: I’ve got a ‘business hub’ on Trello to ensure everything runs smoothly. When you have a lot of clients it’s really important that everything is in order and you know where you’re at in terms of coverage targets etc. I’m also obsessed with Canva at the moment, it’s brilliant for creating social media designs, newsletters and presentations.

HOC: Being a beauty expert, we’d love to know what your top work bag pick me ups are for long work days?

Lucy:For skin, the SKN REHAB actives are brilliant for when I’m on the go, they come in a pack of 7 so ideal for travelling. SKN Drench is my favourite – it contains a high content of hyaluronic acid for extreme hydration; perfect for use whilst flying too!

I also love the Bobbi Brown BB cream, it’s my daily go-to for a flawless complexion. I also make sure I use SPF50 on my face every day to protect against UV/UB rays (yes even in winter!). Just a few products, my iPhone, macbook, diary and I’m good to go!

HOC: Finally, what keeps you grounded when everything is crazy with work and life?

Lucy: Definitely my son! It’s the little things, like watching a film together on the sofa eating popcorn. We also love to go bowling, or to the park and feed the ducks. Just listening to him sing me a song, or tell me a funny story… It makes my day, and makes me remember why I’m doing it all.

You might not expect a fitness franchise to provide leadership opportunities for women; or a fitness business founder who dropped out of school to have built a community of 35,000 attendees from a £200 investment and 8 second hand trampolines.

You clearly haven’t met Kim Perry of ((BOUNCE)). We sat down with Kim to learn about her journey to entrepreneurial success….

HOC: Great to meet you, Kim. Let’s start at the beginning; where did the idea for ((BOUNCE)) come from?

Kim: ((BOUNCE)) is mini trampoline fitness classes, also known as ‘rebounding’, I initially started my business because I wanted to ensure rapid weightloss after giving birth and jumping on a trampoline is 3 times more effective than floor-based fitness so I knew it was an amazing way to workout that wasn’t capitalised on. I also had the hope of not going back to my busy job in the city, so I decided to re-trained my skills in a new industry learning everything about teaching fitness and marrying that with my corporate expertise, it was my time to do it on my own. However, I never actually set out to run a company, I didn’t even write a business plan, my personal goal was to simply generate enough income to create a better work/life balance as I was travelling a lot and with becoming a Mum my priorities had changed.

HOC: We hear you started the business with only £200?!

Kim; Yes! I began ((BOUNCE)) by borrowing £200 and started with just 8 second-hand trampolines teaching classes in Essex in 2014 just weeks after giving birth to my son Jasper Cruze. Being a new Mum had helped me see the isolation parents can face emotionally, physically and practically with a baby in tow so the idea to create an inclusive, social, fun fitness class was the aim… The ((BOUNCE)) USP is that we are ‘child friendly’ meaning that parents can take children with them while they workout. This means literally anything goes, you can bring a buggy in, there’s toys, food, tantrums going on, nappy changes, breastfeeding, kids jumping on the trampolines too, crying, chaos and of course cuddles and lots of laughs but most importantly people are able to unite without prejudice and parents can focus on their fitness without a barrier.

((BOUNCE)) is for all ages and abilities so if you can jump you can do it, most inviting is that the workout is low impact meaning the trampoline absorbs 87% of shock so it’s easy on the joints and suitable for the young, old and even those with injury as its used commonly for rehabilitation too. Even the most hardcore fitness fanatics get an intense workout because harder you push the more calories you’ll lose thanks to gravity and g-force. The apparatus really is the secret to my success, but I realised pretty early on that I had to solidify the brand identity and grow.

What began as 8 trampolines is now an average of 35,000 attendees each month across the globe, 250+ studios and 600 instructors in our teaching team.

HOC: And you won the ‘UK’s best franchisor’ in 2017?

Kim: Winning that award was sentimental because at the time of deciding to franchise or not, it was was a pivotal point in business for me, I felt out of my depth I needed to grow so much more knowledgeable, I had to sacrifice a lot of time as a Mum, as a result it became the most meaningful progress in the business – those are the times are when you look back and know you’ve done yourself proud, when you rise up to a challenge, risk a lot and not give up, especially when there’s no guarantee which way it will go.

With ((BOUNCE)) it just became clear that there just wasn’t enough accessibility for people to get to classes so I wanted to develop a franchise model that maintained control but would help the brand grow exponentially. We went from being just 3 studios that I operated myself to nearly 300 studios in the first 3 years, so my fear was that the brand wouldn’t be able to maintain high standards. But by breaking down your goals and working towards your own strengths you realise where you need help – and that’s when I began to develop the rest of my now 15-person management team.

It all started with devising in-house training courses, sign-off procedures and step-by-step franchise manuals to follow, which have now turned into what we call the ‘Business Hub’ housing all info and support for franchisees. But the key is really being face to face, so our ongoing Continued Professional Development days (C.P.D) are held quarterly and instructors meet to do live training committing to an investment in the of growth of their abilities.

There are over 600 ((B)) instructors in the UK, Ireland, Scotland, Australia and New Zealand and CPD training days ensure were servicing an ever-changing satisfied customer’s experience.

HOC: Before founding ((BOUNCE)) what had you been doing?

Kim: When I was younger, I actually dropped out of high school and I didn’t go to university either, consequently I put a lot of pressure on myself to prove that I could do well in the workforce and as a result I’ve always had strong positions in corporate companies but I have also always felt like I’ve had to work twice as hard to be seen as half as authoritative as any of my male counterparts.

I’ve worked mainly in Property Development, Real Estate, Sales and also Events and in all of those positions I realised later in life that I’d been in a trailblazing position for women, whether that’s relating to lower pay, lack of bonuses, discrimination, or being the only female in a management position, I felt I was having to make a stand. Such experiences over time have helped me form a focus within my own company now at ((BOUNCE)) that it’s paramount to prioritise women’s place in the workforce and everything surrounding their needs. For example by franchising ((BOUNCE)) I was able to open up opportunities for women to teach under my brand and directly create leadership roles for women to find independent, financial security in fitness industry.

((BOUNCE)) focuses on fitness for Mums, who are generically seen as the glue that holds family life together – if that glue isn’t strong, satisfied or supported then there can be a negative ripple effect. The ((BOUNCE)) ethos is about breaking down barriers and ensuring women are more equal in more ways.

HOC: Can you remember what your very first job was, and does this relate to what you are doing now?

Kim: I remember being desperate to work from such a young age! I never felt like school was enough for me, I was always pushing the limits. When I was about 13 I’d made a resume documenting all the babysitting I’d done and how I was ironing baskets of clothes for my Mum for and charging the neighbours to wash their cars in the street!

I regularly went to every store in the local shopping centre and asked for a job after school and I finally got my first at ‘Donut King’– it was the best! I made cappuccinos constantly, I’d clean, stack shelves, place stock orders and I would always make way too many donuts toward closing time so I could take all the leftovers home…

I’m making up for that now by teaching fitness every day!

HOC: If you weren’t running ((BOUNCE)), what could have career plan B looked like?

Kim: I am very Sales driven. I am interested in leads, conversions, I like expectations, considering customer buying trends, branding, marketing and overall consumerism. It interests me in relation to considering why we want things, how we are sold-to or what we buy-into and whether that does or does not satisfy us. I like creating working relationships, planning, organisation, making procedures and looking at efficiency. I know some people absolutely loathe the thought of things like that but being in a corporate environment is where I feel useful and inspired – so ultimately, if I wan’t running a fitness brand I would still be doing something business-related probably in middle management somewhere… either that or making donuts I’ve just realised!

HOC: What are your ambitions for your brand this year?

Kim: I believe there are some big responsibilities on me as a female CEO. More-so than my business ambitions with ((BOUNCE)), this year I have a fundamental focus on female empowerment being clearly channelled throughout the brand and beyond ensuring that women in any workplace know their worth. Together we need to be constantly finding ways to spread a stronger sense of certainty that we are valued enough and proud enough to achieve our desired successes.

Since inception I’m am so proud to say that ((BOUNCE)) has made waves in this way by creating a company framework that has facilitated 1 woman every second day into a leadership role over the last 4 years and 97% of our franchises are female owned and operated.

In doing this I have become a Harlow Ambassador for the Chamber of Commerce championing business in my local area plus an Ambassador for the Allbright Academy which is a progressive network of women in business who are focused on smashing through corporate glass ceiling or building their own empires and giving them the best guidance to do this. I am happy to share my experiences knowing that if I had heard more about other women in business and their everyday plights, I might’ve made my move sooner and with a lot more conviction. All you need is a little bit of gumption for when it goes wrong and the guts to get up and be a #girlboss every day in every way.

HOC: In addition to ((BOUNCE)), what do you do to keep your mental and physical health up during busy work periods?

Kim: I have truly found my energy and happiness improve whenever I am on a trampoline, I put the lights down low and the music up high and at some point, you just realise you can’t take yourself too seriously when you’re jumping on a trampoline! Other than that, I talk to my inner self a lot, I try to recognise when I mess up, apologise for it and I tell myself it’s ok when others do too because that’s how I want my workplace to be. I work with a lot of my closest friends and my husband too so ultimately, I don’t want us to all feel under pressure. Practically, I know that if I literally stop, go and watch something on TV, then it gives my brain a chance to reset and recognise there is a way and I will find it when the time is right.

HOC: From your instagram I see your partner in life is also your business partner! What’s it like running your business together; what tips do you have for making this work at work and keeping personal life personal?

Kim: I met my husband Chris at a previous job, we’re total opposites, he’s patient, calm, considered, logical, financial, I’m more intense, risky, expectant and decisive but our office romance blossomed into a solid marriage and we’ve been a team in business and in life for 10 years.

At ((BOUNCE)) we’re constantly making decisions together and we usually come from very different perspectives of what we think is right from so the ‘secret’ is that we strategize until we can agree. At the time that can be feisty, but we choose to see each other as equals and we remind each other that we bring different skills to the company and we work on appreciating that – usually in the aftermath one of us will go up to the other and say that we love something about working together. And laugh. We laugh a lot! Finding a balance and being able to create a supportive working relationship makes for even sweeter success – whether that’s with colleagues, clients, superiors or loved ones.

I’m incredibly proud of having a work life and a love life with the same person, so I’m careful to swap hats regularly, as a wife and a Mum I plan dinners together, solidify family routine so we’re not always talking about work in front of our son, and make major memories with special holidays to relax or big parties to celebrate. I plan and diarise everything I want out of my week and that helps me manage in a practical way.

HOC: What are your top work bag pick me ups for long work days / travelling?

Kim: Lip balm is literally my life partner! When you’re a fitness instructor you’re constantly talking, sweating and needing re-hydration so I cannot live without Carmex to keep my lips less dry with all the talking I do.

I drink water 24hrs a day, I even wake up during the night and reach for it, there is nothing more satisfying – except maybe a glass of wine at the end of a long day. As someone who works in fitness, I live by the rule to ‘output more than you input’ and I don’t eat sugars but I’m a sucker for a sauvignon blanc.

I spend a lot of money on YSL perfume and MAC makeup, I am usually rushing from the studio in the morning straight to a lunch meeting or my son’s school activities so that sweaty afterglow that you get from exercising is the vibe I need to slightly disguise.

Good quality active wear has always served me well. I live in leggings, sweatshirts and crisp clean trainers and with the right casual look I believe you command an essence of confidence, comfort and style, running around all day. Stashing a fresh outfit like this is rolled up in my bag is an easy way to go from ‘class to kicking ass’!

HOC: Finally, what other business women do you look up to and why?

Kim: Pip Edwards of PE Nation is someone who I keep my eye on, her streetwear brand and busy fitness/travel lifestyle is something I relate to but most notably her slow rise to fame from working for others to now owning her own label and achieving success in her own right embodies the idea of being a blazing business woman when the time is right for you.

Karren Brady is also someone who I think about when making bold decisions. Her pioneering journey in a ‘man’s world’ at the youthful age of 21 and subsequent roles during motherhood and sickness show that if work is important to you then you can get the job done no matter what you’re faced with.

We’re always looking for interior inspo, whether it’s the latest piece of art or something really OTT to lift a blank canvas. Twilight Trees has been a brand on our radar for quite some time, especially with some of their clients boasting Millie Mackintosh, This Morning and The Royal Academy, but who created such a sparkly brand? Our writer Jenna caught up with their CEO Susie Thomas to discuss a past career in PR, making clients visions come to life and even hiring her own husband…

________________________________________________________________

JC: So firstly, why Trees? What gave you the inspiration to take a natural concept and turn it into something much more glamorous?

ST: The trees were a lucky find. I came across the trees on a trip abroad and absolutely fell in love with them. The very fact that they are a natural concept but given a glamorous, sparkling element made them even more special to me. After I brought one back for myself I got so many friends and family members asking if I could get them one that I decided to set up a small business. That small business has grown and the trees have got more and more creative.

JC: We too always find interior inspo on our travels, so it’s awesome to see that this is how you came across them! So after reading your story, and getting to know more about Twilight Trees. I’m still fascinated by your background. Can you tell us more about your history before the brand took off?

ST: I come from an inspiring entrepreneurial family so to a point, business is in the blood, as is determination. When I lived in London I ran a successful boutique PR company called Silver Thread Communications. We represented brands that we felt passionate about; everything from Formula One teams and superyachts to the most scrumptious home made granola that you’ve ever tasted. One of the things I’ve always believed in is that in order to sell a product, you must believe in it and that’s been my barometer throughout my career. When we moved to Winchester I started Sanga Designs which involved sourcing, sculpting and hand polishing cow horns which were then exhibited and sold in some of the top galleries. That was life before trees….

JC: WOW, what a colourful career! We see that since you launched, you’ve worked with a whole host of household names including Millie Mackintosh & even ITV’s This Morning. What has been your favourite event to work on so far?

ST: There are quite a few that are up there but the summer party at the Royal Academy would have to be the one that stands out from the crowd and funnily enough, it’s not one that started off terribly well! We arrived in the morning to set up and were greeted by an anxious client who was having a wobble as to whether the trees had been the right choice and if they really did fit with her ultimate vision for the event. We took this in our stride and worked alongside the client to set up and dress the trees so beautifully that you couldn’t help but be bowled over. The client was absolutely delighted and actually said that the only downside was that they were so breath taking that people kept stopping to take pictures! Ultimately that day we worked with some of the best suppliers in the industry at an ionic venue, the client was over the moon and we have continued to work with her to this day.

JC: Who would be your dream client?

ST: We’ve had them. That sounds like we’re blowing our own trumpet but it’s all been a bit of a dream to be honest. When I started this company I couldn’t have imagined the clients we’ve had and every time we pick up the phone it could be another dream client. I love this about my job and I feel proud of the clients we attract.

JC: Do you feel that now we’re in an ‘Instagram society’ more and more people want to take their interior design/gardens to the next level with the edition of LED’s etc?

ST: Pinterest and Instagram have certainly helped to step up the interiors/ exterior game but have also made these looks both more accessible and easier to communicate. We use Instagram as a way of marketing and do find it’s a powerful platform for our marketing and sales. One thing worth noting is that what people are portraying as their perfect homes/gardens/lives are not always reflective of real life. If you are one of those people who likes to keep up appearances but might not have the budget to buy, the beauty of Twilight Trees is that you can hire them!

JC: Can you tell us about a recent ‘Girl Boss’ moment?

ST: The ultimate ‘Girl Boss’ moment is when I was able to poach my husband from a high flying city career and employ him myself.

JC: That really is the ultimate Girl Boss win! Aside from all the dream clients and sparkles, what has been the hardest part of running your own business?

ST: Work/ life balance. Being a mother of two boys is incredibly demanding but I also put an awful lot of pressure on myself to do both motherhood and the business justice. My husband used to work away a lot but last year saw Twilight Trees reach a point where he could join our team and with that we have found equilibrium. Work/ life balance is always going to be a challenge but I do feel that we’re getting there!

JC: What’s in the pipeline for 2019?

ST: Every year we crank it up a notch. We have just taken on two new members of staff so we are about to start knocking on a whole lot more doors. I have total faith in Twilight Trees as a concept and as a business and as a team we aren’t afraid of hard work. We have the recipe and the ingredients, if we put them all together the right way we should be able to watch the cake rise and I assure you, it will be absolutely delicious!

There’s nothing better than slipping into some gorgeous nightwear, especially if you’ve just checked into a 5* hotel. As #TeamCoco are constantly travelling and are lucky enough to lay our head at some of the most prestigious hotels and resorts around the world, luxury nightwear is usually top of our packing list. However, as some of us are blessed with killer curves it can be hard to find nightwear which is high quality and has a fit that makes us feel a million dollars. One brand that champions the fuller figure and takes influence from Hollywood starlets is Bustoire. Our writer Jenna got behind the brand to chat to the CEO Joyce, to discover more about the brands history and how she transitioned from a career in Banking to designing glamorous slips…

________________________________________________________________

JC: So firstly, what was it like transitioning from working in banking to owning your own nightwear brand? Must have been quite a change of pace!

JL: Yes, definitely quite the change. I’ve worked in banking since I graduated with a mathematics degree. And although banking and fashion seem like polar opposites and in many ways they are, there are still similarities in skills that apply to both. I enjoy the whole process of designing and selecting the fabrics for each piece and love the detail and craftsmanship that goes into every garment. Seeing my designs come to life is very exciting. I like to work very closely with my manufacturer who is based in London and be present during the production phase. I source all the fabrics from the UK and only use the highest quality silk satin, silk chiffon and lace. I think it’s important to use natural, breathable fabrics, so that our garments are not only perfect for lounging but also sleeping in.

What makes my garments unique is that each piece has hidden bra support. The hidden bra support is made from Powernet a durable, strong, stretchy fabric that provides that much needed support for a bigger bust while still feeling comfortable and free. There is great attention to detail even down to the bra strap adjusters, which are gold plated. It was important to have our garments made in the UK and be an authentically British brand that is sustainable and ethical.

JC: We love the retro Hollywood vibe of your collection – was there a Hollywood pin-up who inspired some of your designs?

JL: My debut collection is inspired by Hollywood glamour and powerful, strong women whom I admire. The Josephine Babydoll for example was inspired by none other than Josephine Baker’s famous banana skirt which she first wore while performing in her show La Revue Nègre in the 1920s. The iconic skirt influenced the silk chiffon gathering and stitching. It drapes so elegantly against the skin and flows with such beauty.

JC: Why did you choose to focus your collection on larger busted women?

JL: I decided to focus on nightwear for fuller busted women because of my own experience of not finding beautiful, feminine and supportive nightwear for a larger bust. There has been some progress over the past 10 years with bras and swimwear for bigger cup sizes, however nightwear is still a very underserved market for DD+ women. I initially had the idea a few years ago while on day trip to Cambridge with a friend. While shopping we went into a well-known lingerie shop where my friend proceeded to purchase a red lace slip that came in the usual small, medium and large. I stood around knowing there was nothing in the shop that would fit me and just waited for my friend to pay.

On the train back to London I kept thinking about the red lace slip and why I was so used to seeing nightwear that didn’t come in larger sizes that supported a fuller bust. I felt frustrated and at the same time inspired. I decided there and then there needed to be a change. I eagerly brought out a notebook and pen and started sketching designs. I remember how empowering and freeing it felt. As soon as I reached home I took out my sewing machine and made my first prototype and that’s how the brand started.

JC: Who would be your dream stockist of Bustoire?

JL: I would love to see my brand in Selfridges, Harrods and Harvey Nichols in the UK, Barney’s, and Neiman Marcus in the US and luxury department stores in Australia, Dubai and Canada. Currently we are selling direct to customers through our online store and pop up shops.

JC: Can you tell us about a recent ‘Girl Boss’ moment?

JL: A recent Girl Boss moment was launching my first pop up shop in Islington over the Christmas holidays. It was amazing to see the customer’s reactions to the garments and being able to provide a physical retail as well as an online experience. We will be doing more pop up shops this year.

JC: We can’t wait to see one of your physical stores to come to life! Aside from all the excitement, what has been the hardest part of running your own clothing business?

JL: The most challenging part is splitting my time between my full time banking job and running a business. When people ask me how I do it, I say I don’t know what sleep is anymore which usually gets a few laughs. But in reality I try to stick to a schedule and plan ahead of time what needs to be done in the evenings and weekends. This helps me to stay focused. I am also a big believer in morning and night routines, which also helps. I don’t try to do everything myself and I’m lucky to have a fantastic and talented team to work with.

JC: What’s in the pipeline for 2019?

JL: You can look forward to Bustoire garments being stocked in luxury retail stores and boutiques in the UK and a new collection coming soon.

There’s an immense amount of pressure around becoming an entrepreneur, especially at a young age. Some ‘thought leaders’, like Gary Vee, vehemently believe that – if you enjoy working within a company, you clearly aren’t a born entrepreneur. Our interviewee today, Julia Kendrick, founder of Kendrick PR has a fascinating and engaging career history to date – driven by her hardwork and ethics.

Let’s find out more and let us know your thoughts on the employee / entrepreneur debate in the comments…

HOC: Wonderful to meet you Julia and thanks for taking the time to speak to us about your business, Kendrick PR? Can you give us the elevator pitch?

Julia: Haha, straight in with the hard stuff! In a nutshell, Kendrick PR is a boutique, bespoke public relations and marketing consultancy; specifically focused on the medical aesthetic, cosmetic surgery and high-end beauty and skincare industries. It’s great because we’ve had a major growth spurt in recent months thanks to the acquisition of another highly respected PR agency in the same field, but that core of who we are and what we do definitely remains the same!

My passion has always been in bringing to life the science behind a product; why it’s new and why it works – this from my background in health PR, working in big London agencies for major pharma companies. I’ve been able to take this approach forward out of the strict ‘pharma’ field – working with ethical and well-founded consumer brands and bringing them to where they need to go.

There’s been such a boom in the aesthetic and cosmeceuticals industries recently – so the challenge for media (and consumers) is knowing who to trust and why to believe in a particular brand or treatment! I’m passionate about bringing the educational part of the industry out and only working with brands that meet my rather exceptionally high standards. I’m not into fluff or snake oil!

HOC: Science and PR seems like an interesting cross-over, and definitely not anything my career advisor told me about!, how did you come to specialise in this field?

Julia:That’s definitely true, especially as PR can sometimes be seen a lot of smoke and mirrors! It’s interesting as I feel the UK is very different to the US when it comes to routes into PR. Many American PRs have studied PR and Marketing at college whereas I did a degree in Biology and Psychology!

I basically just studied what I found interesting and I love hopping from one thing to another – those subjects are ever evolving so there’s always something new to learn. So that’s the science, but I’ve always loved language and how it can be used for different means and the psychology behind how language can inform and persuade. I’ve fallen into the right niche!

HOC: When did you start running your business, was it always a dream of yours?

Julia: Not at all! I’m a typical Taurian; I’m risk averse and never set out to be an entrepreneur – it just worked out this way. I switched from PR agencies to in-house and was happily ploughing my furrow – but a change in circumstances saw me jump into freelance life in 2015, from which I built up Kendrick PR.

I think there’s sometimes an expectation that wanting to be an entrepreneur from the start (or an early age) is the norm, that you are missing out if you don’t have this innate drive to conquer the world. I think there’s a lot of pressure around age as well, you see teenagers making crazy money on Instagram and YouTube and can feel that you’ve totally missed the boat to carve out your own business or niche offering.

Being an entrepreneur can come at a later stage in your career and from a direction you don’t expect. This was how it was for me; completely out of leftfield and terrifying when it first happened! It’s important for people to realise that it’s possible that later on in your life, maybe after babies or after another milestone; change can come. It can be a hugely positive and inspirational thing.

HOC: I couldn’t agree more, the conversation nowadays can make people feel so inferior if they haven’t got 7 revenue streams at the age of 20! So how did you transition from a career you were happy in to running your business?

Julia: After many years in PR agencies, I was in-house at a big industry corporate, in a job I loved – in fact, where I had found my passion for the medical aesthetic industry! I had my first baby at age 30 – stepping off the career path to go on mat leave was a bit scary in itself for an ambitious person like me, but I knew I would be back on track in a year. Unfortunately, while I was off the company had a reshuffle and the role I was offered on returning didn’t align with what I was looking for in terms of scope and flexibility for a more balanced work/life! I wanted the security of a job that I knew, but I needed the flexibility to dictate my own work schedule around my family, so I screwed up my courage and just flung myself into the unknown world of freelance consultancy.

Thanks to the relationships I’d built up in the aesthetic industry, I quickly, built up a great client roster and a viable business – including presenting at industry congresses, running business workshops, writing for trade press on PR and marketing – as well as launching brands, and working with leading businesses. It snowballed so quickly and it was just me, like Harry Potter, sat at my desk under the stairs at home! It was the best thing that could have happened and showed me that sometimes you’ve just got to go for what you want.

For a few years, I was a sole consultant but in 2018 I rapidly expanded the business by acquiring another leading PR agency in the same space – which gave me a great team and expanded capabilities to deliver the true and to end service for clients that I wanted – from trade launches all the way through to consumer press and influencer work, and so much more. Now, I’ve got my sights set on a Dubai office, a Singapore office…

HOC: Do you get to travel much with your business?

Julia: At the moment, I’m not travelling too much but that’s the next item on the agenda! The market is evolving and a lot of the innovation is coming out of the Middle East and Singapore. There’s a few brands we’ve worked with already who want to get a foothold in Europe and the UK is the first place that they tend to land. That’s where I want to take things; to be that hub that can bring amazing brands across.

One of the brands that I do really want to bring over from Singapore is a stem cell-based skincare range, they have fascinating technology and new directions that are well established over there will shake the market up here!

HOC: It definitely feels like the general consumer is getting behind the science in beauty more now than ever before…

Julia: Definitely, that’s true with the influx of injectables and lasers, facials, high end medical beauty treatments – but I strongly feel we have to give due gravitas to these products and procedures. We do work in a controversial area; there are some who think that we are tools of the patriarchy – that somehow our work is telling women that they aren’t good enough. We actually put female empowerment at the heart of everything we do. For instance, if something is bothering you and is affecting your well-being or your health, it’s our job to help inform the public about the options for doing something about it.

We work on everything from clinically-based skincare brands that treat acne and rosacea, to medical tech and treatments that can help restore a woman’s pelvic floor after child birth which the NHS doesn’t currently provide. It’s your choice, if you don’t know what’s out there, you can’t make an informed decision about what’s right for you.

HOC: Not so fluffy PR now then!

Julia: Not at all! I’ll be honest, I’ve always loved beauty and make-up but for me, there was a hesitancy in pursuing it as part of a career due to the feeling that it tended to be pigeon-holed as superficial or shallow. There’s still sometimes that feeling of having to choose between beauty and brains – that somehow you can’t have both, or that one devalues the other. PR itself definitely has an image problem, being seen as fluffy or waffly – but there’s so much to it, when it’s done well.

I have brands come to me asking me to “get them into the magazines” but often I have to make them stop and go back three steps, as they haven’t truly worked on their value proposition, or messaging, or sussed out how to differentiate effectively from their competitors. Once this foundation is in place, the PR will be much more successful. In this world of social media you have to be ready to engage on a personal level with customers and if you don’t have a consistent social media strategy and response team ready, any negative comments can snowball and ruin your brand reputation.

Every entrepreneur needs to understand how to do their own PR but they need the skills. I was getting so many requests from clinics and doctors who couldn’t appoint their own PR company but needed help that I created The Elite Reputation Programme. It’s an online training programme with 24 modules basically of my knowledge and expertise distilled down into training sessions and materials – right from the basics of PR to more complex stuff. It’s another way for me to upskill and support my industry.

HOC:How do you balance your business / family?

Julia: It’s challenging for sure and we often put this pressure on ourselves to be women who ‘have it all’; I think that’s very toxic and damaging. I have managed over the past 4 years because I’ve had support from so many women. My family help me look after the kids and I have an amazing childminder. In a business sense, I’ve had so much support from other female entrepreneurs who have guided me, lifted me up and connected me to a nurturing and empowering environment. It’s incredible how ready I’ve found women are to support others.

For me, it’s about allowing myself the little instances of self-care so I can keep plates spinning and my energy up. When I first went freelance I went from working in a buzzy office to working on my own and after a while, the shine wore off and I was in the house on my own, enjoying my work but not getting any social interaction and sometimes not even getting ready to leave the house. This started to get me down and I recognised that I wasn’t feeling right in myself. I joined a health club to have a way to keep fit and work remotely, a change of scene was what I needed. I was lucky enough to meet a fantastic life coach (who was incidentally helping me sleep train my daughter!) and I have regular sessions with her to help mentor, grow and develop myself.

As women, I think we too often put ourselves last but the thing is, if we pack in and the wheels fall off; everyone around us loses out too. Just simple things like having a personal trainer come to my house super early, twice per week, means I can have something for myself without compromising on work or family time. We need to give ourselves permission to make those changes.

HOC: Finally, what advice, if any, would you have for you 10 years ago?

Julia: Good question! 2009 me was just about to get married and I was happily working in a buzzy PR agency. I think one thing I would say to myself is around embracing change. I wouldn’t be where I am or who I am today without unexpected change coming in – and you shouldn’t see change as negative or disruptive, but as something which can break up the status quo and allow something even better to come to fruition.

I certainly tend to crave consistency and safety but you grow best through adversity and challenging yourself. You find out more about yourself and what you are capable of. I don’t mean that something terrible has to happen but that the more interesting things in your life, and your ability to grow and develop will only come when you’re not in your comfort zone. That’s where you achieve those things that you never even thought that you could, and think ooh, I’ve only gone and done it!
