Cotton On

Sustainable Attributes / Sustainable Fabrics Used:

Our best-selling Mother Puffers are made with 100% recycled polyester in the shell, lining and fill. Converting to recycled materials reduces our reliance on conventional synthetic fibers. Now we’re working on doing even more, by exploring recycled alternatives for the trims.

Our recycled ranges make up part of our bigger circularity goal. We’re collaborating with suppliers to source recycled fibers that repurpose plastic waste, diverting it from our oceans and landfills. This year, we’ve been working with REPREVE©, the world’s leading brand in recycled performance fiber made from recycled bottles. Our sights are set on launching a new recycled swim range in the USA in early 2023.

We partnered with RESET Carbon, a specialist supply chain and environmental consultancy, to measure how we’re reducing our impact in a meaningful way. Compared to the industry average, our denim uses 21% less water, 25% less energy and 19% less carbon.

Africa Cotton Program: What began as a pilot program now spans across Kenya and Mozambique, with the mission to train farmers in sustainable farming practices and open pathways to explore agriculture as a meaningful career.

We all know Earth Day should be more than just a single day. That’s just a fact. To move the needle on any sort of systemic environmental change, a company should invest in these social responsibility measures from the start. It should not be a disingenuous afterthought.

A popular term you many have heard floating around in the fashion world is deadstock, which is a way of upcycling. Deadstock refers to existing fabric/material that did not sell, was produced in surplus or from previous collections that can end up in the landfill if not reused. Gaining in popularity, a British company is simply named Deadstock Fabrics. Companies use deadstock and re-create these landfill-destined fabrics into brand new products. What’s old is new again for these brands helping to slow the roll of the fast fashion engine. Below I am listing a few of the more notable one’s for you to follow:

Boyish:

Who knew that making clothes from deadstock saves about 10,000 pounds of CO2 emission each year? Jordan Nodarse, the Founder and Designer and his team at Boyish did. Designed in Los Angeles, Boyish uses ethical and sustainable practices when developing and manufacturing their jeans. They hunt for vintage rolls of eco-friendly fabrics to create their jeans and full collection of apparel. I myself adore the Joaquin, which can serve double duty and be worn as a dress or a jacket. To certify their sustainable efforts, Boyish has invested in metrics that reflect this effort. To achieve this, they focus on using a transparency supply chain platform, Retraced, utilizing the international Global Recycle Standard (GRS) that verifies the third-party certification of recycled content and finally measuring/scoring their sustainability performance through the Higg Index (developed by the Sustainable Apparel Coalition). The Boyish site also has a Consignment Shop that ensures that your pre-worn items will also have another life. In return, you earn money towards a new pair. Every purchase on Boyish is a win-win, as they plant a tree for every purchase on our website through 1% for the Planet and One Tree Planted.

Gaâla:

Sustainable French fashion brand Gaâla was founded by husband-and-wife duo, Kelly de Gaâlon and Alexander Zhalezka. Being one of 8 siblings, Kelly is not a stranger to upcycling clothing. Hand-me-downs were simply a way of life. Cut to her time in Shanghai, where Kelly took her hobby and expanded it into a career. Developing Gaâla to fill a gap in the market; classic French styles made from high quality fabric sold at accessible prices. This is thanks to their team of talented tailors and cutters, who work in the small-scale workshop with ethical standards including compensation with an above living wage.

Maintaining a quality standard, Gaâla handpicks their deadstock material from around the world. From Italian fashion houses for the luxury leftover cotton, viscose and wool to Hangzhou, China, for the traditional silk.

All Things Mochi:

Years ago, I came across All Things Mochi and their collection that celebrated cultural, traditional methods of embroidery all around the world. I purchased a beautiful green off the shoulder top complete with embroidered mirrors on it, and it’s definitely one of the most unique items in my closet. It’s been almost a decade since All Things Mochi started showcasing different cultures through the handicraft of local artists for a contemporary market. Since then, founder and Designer of Mochi, Ayah Tabari and her team have re-framed their business’ fast fashion model to a slowed down, refined approach. All Things Mochi now has three collections: Mochi Reconstructed, Mochi Signatures and Mochi Finds.

Mochi Reconstructed, includes repurposed pieces and Mochi fabrics from previous collections combined into one-off creations. Mochi Signatures, includes unique favorites from Mochi’s most coveted collections (much like my mirrored top). Finally, Mochi Finds are a curation of vintage classics. Same Mochi flair with and fresh new focus.

BAGGU:

Ever since my good friend gifted me a reusable nylon bag last year, which I carry in my work bag daily – I am hooked. Since then, I have purchased a few of their well-designed/fitting masks (the adjustable nose piece, straps and neck underlay makes it the most comfortable ones I own to date!). BAGGU was created to eliminate unnecessary waste, and has made a commitment to never incinerate or landfill their deadstock products.

I find myself frequently perusing their online store for products in their coveted strawberry print. I also love that BAGGU launched a series of deadstock bags using half and half prints. They also have reusable bags are assembled from one continuous piece of recycled nylon material, with the neck of the bag used to construct the carrying pouch. And when your bag is all worn out – you can recycle it with BAGGU for a discount off a new one.

MarBella Elix may be a bit of a treck away from Corfu and sister properties MarBella Corfu and MarBella Nido, but is well worth the visit especially for travellers looking to get lost in Corfu’s majestic natural landscapes.

The hotel blends modern architecture with natural materials and sits discretely atop a pine-forested hill. Unlike other hotels, MarBella Elix benefits from a unique location that blends fresh mountain air with sandy beaches, offering the best of both worlds in terms of Parga’s unique topography, which is located in the mainland across from Corfu.

Heinz Troll photoshooting October 2020

From the outside looking in, the hotel’s decidedly modern façade looks like it could be the final stage of the latest Bond Film. Inside, you will see a subtle blend of Greek, alpine and even Turkish touches – that is sleek, sexy yet approachable.

A live olive tree sits in the middle of the lobby and serves as a metaphor for the hotel’s indoor meets outdoor design concept. Here, the lines are blurred – and you are never quite sure where MarBella Elix ends and nature begins.

We stayed in one of the hotel’s generously-sized superior suites. The suite is understated and contemporary, yet features some welcome cultural touches like Turkish tapestries decorating the walls, and the fabulous hand-crafted wooden headboards and wardrobes. Our large balcony overlooks the Karavostasi beach and offers breath-taking views of the Ionian Coast.

In fact, every room at MarBella Elix offers the same sea incredible sea views, regardless if you are in the standard room of the amazing two-story terraza suite.

The Terrazza Suite, the crème de la crème of suites at MarBella Elix, is a sight to behold. Double height ceilings, a generously-sized bathroom and the most incredible infinity pool we have seen will welcome guests here looking to elevate their visit to Parga. Priced at around €500 during low season and over €1000 at high season, the infinity pool alone is worth splashing out.

MarBella Elix has three restaurants, each inspired by a different colour. Saffron is the main buffet restaurant and takes its name from the rare spice; Indigo is inspired by the colour of the hotel’s incredible infinity pool, Black Pearl the fine dining restaurant that welcomes a rotating roster of star chefs, and Aquamarine – the beach club. Each one offering a different colour and flavour perspective to Mediterranean cuisine.

The hotel’s show-stopper is of course the incredible pool deck. Located on the sixth floor, and home to three different pools, this is the perfect spot to luxuriate under the Mediterranean sun. On a clear day, you will even see the nearby islands of Paxos, Antipaxos and Corfu.

While MarBella Elix may be a bit more isolated in terms of location, there’s certainly no end of things to do to entertain guests. We recommend doing a fitness class with Chrysa, the hotel’s resident fitness expert, on the outdoor viewing deck. Because whether you’re doing a relaxing sunrise yoga session, or sweating it out with a HIIT workout – I can promise you won’t find a better backdrop for a workout anywhere else in the world.

For those looking for more exclusive experiences, search for Stamatis in reception. MarBella Elix offers a curated range of exclusive experiences that will certainly make any stay at Elix unforgettable.

Pssst…I’m going to let you in on a secret. There’s a cool, new brand emerging on the jewellery scene that is about to blow up. D. Louise is a stylish collection of affordable, high-quality jewellery that you will own for ever. Gold jewellery is bang on trend right now, I’m a big fan of layering mine on a night out but find that after a couple of wears they take on a green tinge and can’t be worn again. D. Louise is a range of uniquely designed pieces that can be worn every day, in the shower or at the gym without tarnishing or turning green.

I’ve been crushing on this jewellery collection for some time and after chatting to founder Olivia Jenkins I think I may be crushing on her too. Olivia, aged 25 from London, set up the brand during the global pandemic after she became increasingly frustrated with her every day jewellery turning her skin green. After researching materials and road testing them herself, she started sourcing suppliers while juggling her full-time job in a media agency. D. Louise quickly took off and she quit her job in the city to throw herself into the business full-time. She said, “Like most people, the pandemic changed my job, I went from a very social role to being stuck at home. I felt like I had no purpose so when I spotted a gap in the jewellery market, I decided to just go for it”.

The range, which she has a hand in designing includes elegant rings, funky earrings, and bracelets as well as chic necklaces. It is made with a high-quality stainless steel, which is durable, 100% recyclable and affordable. It goes through a PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coating process to add the gold plate. This method is ten times thicker than standard gold plating, making the finish on the jewellery resistant to corrosion and tarnishing, which means you can wear the pieces on the beach or in the pool and they’ll still look fabulous.

D. Louise is about wearing stylish jewellery every day that won’t break the bank, with prices ranging from £28 – £50. Olivia tells me that zodiac necklaces are going to be big this summer. Her biggest sellers are her bracelets, and I can see why, I love the Rolo Chain bracelet and the Chunky Monkey would make amazing arm candy at any pool party this summer.

Olivia named the brand after her Mum, Deborah Louise, who she sadly lost to cancer in 2017. She said, “I feel like a piece of my mum is in the business. It reminds me anything is possible and while life can be tough at times, you can create your own future”.

D. Louise is passionate about promoting sustainable fashion and offers a lifetime warranty on all pieces and any items which have manufacturing defects are recycled into new products. Olivia has ensured that not only is this ingrained into the product itself but is central to the brand. All packaging is FSC® certified, recyclable, and plastic free. The brand partners with ‘Get Mads’ who offset their carbon, remove plastic from the oceans and plant a tree with every order. D. Louise also donates a portion of profits to support the Oceanic Society, a non-profit organisation that works to improve ocean health.

Olivia’s vision is to be the world’s most well know stainless steel jewellery brand. I don’t think she’ll have to wait long, D. Louise ticks all the boxes from being affordable, high-quality, sustainable and super stylish.

“Aurum by GUÐBJÖRG stands for Ambition, Understanding, Responsibility, Unity, and Mindfulness,” says Founder Guðbjörg Kristín Ingvarsdóttir on the values that define her Icelandic jewellery brand.

With its striking, sculptural jewellery pieces, Aurum breathes sustainability and takes inspiration from the ethereal beauty of Iceland’s natural landscapes. It is also the expression of Guðbjörg’s own passion, creativity and genuine commitment to the earth.

In this Women Worldwide interview, Team Coco sits down with Guðbjörg to talk about her love for jewellery, how Aurum is promoting environmental and ethical sustainability across all areas of its business, and how Aurum serves as a platform to showcase the beauty of Icelandic culture to the world.

“To be an innovator and a designer is to be constantly growing and learning and to be patient. It’s important to be passionate about the job, to be industrious, to successfully execute ideas, and to learn by doing. Work hard, make original work and be patient.”

Aurum by GUÐBJÖRG

Tell us a little bit about yourself and background. What made you fall in love with jewellery?

I finished my goldsmith and jewellery design education in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1996. Between 1996 to 1999, I opened a studio in Copenhagen and worked on my first 2 collections Isold and Heida. I moved back to Iceland in 1999 and launched Aurum the same year.

I fell in love with jewellery making after I spent a year in high school on Bainbridge Island in the US. I took a jewellery class at school, and I had a Norwegian teacher, who was an amazing woman who had a big influence on me. When I came back to Iceland after spending a year abroad, all I wanted to be was a goldsmith.

What does Aurum stand for? How does this philosophy inform the way you approach your business?

Aurum stands for Ambition, Understanding, Responsibility, Unity and Mindfulness. Aurum puts great emphasis on that ambition through our design, product development, quality, and customer care. We show that we understand the needs of our clients and customers with respect and empathy and that we are helpful and flexible.

We show responsibility across the business by developing a positive and respectable working environment that encourages collaboration and cooperation between employees. Aurum sources materials from certified fair-trade companies and provides environmentally friendly packaging for our clients and customers.

Aurum displays unity with our community by supporting charities with short and long-term projects, and then donating all profits from those projects to selected causes. Aurum is an equal-opportunity company and encourages a mindfulness and prejudice-free environment where everyone has a voice.

How important is sustainability to you and Aurum?

We want our customers to be confident that they are dealing with a company that continues to reduce its carbon footprint in all aspects of its production.

Sustainability is at the heart of our brand values. For example, we only use recycled gold and silver, which is something we have been doing for the past 16 years. We only use lab-grown diamonds offered by members of the Responsible Jewellery Council.

We also package our jewellery in sustainable mulberry tree paper, which is made without cutting down any trees; and finally, we offset our carbon emissions by planting trees, via our partnership with UK-based non-profit TreeSisters.

Being eco-friendly is but one aspect of our corporate social responsibility policies. We have permanent and campaign-based collaborations with several non-profit partners.

Where does the inspiration for your unique packaging come from?

Our very special packaging is modelled on Icelandic stones which I discovered on an Icelandic beach in West Iceland. They are made out of ‘Saa Oaoer’ or Mulberry Paper which is the best fibre of the Mulberry tree. Collecting the fibre doesn’t interfere with the ecosystem as not a single tree has to be cut down. Only the leaves are harvested while the tree continues growing.

How does your Icelandic heritage inform your design process?

The Icelandic energy provides me with endless creative ideas. To sense the beauty and experience all the beautiful forms and the quietness in the countryside. This is especially true when I visit my summerhouse in the western part of Iceland, which gives me a break from my busy life in the city and where my creative ideas start to flow.

From the comments that I get from my customers from all over the world, I can tell that my ideas resonate with them, and that they can sense the Icelandic nature and culture in my jewelry design and that is a good feeling. As one of my customers recently said about the jewellery:

“It truly is reminiscent of why we love Iceland, for its natural beauty.”

“It’s impossible not to think of Iceland every time you wear it.”

What have been the biggest challenges and milestones you’ve faced as an entrepreneur?

Covid-19 has been challenging but with the hard work and great support of our team, everything has been working smoothly. The challenge for Aurum is to keep up with the growth of the company. We have to be open to new opportunities and keep on developing The Aurum Brand and focus on our core values every day.

What’s next for you? Any new exciting projects in the pipeline?

We will continue to grow Aurum by Guðbjörg and focus on our online business.

Our new Basalt collection just came out last month and the next one is coming out very soon. I am very excited about the new collection, the design process takes such a long time so it is always a thrilling moment when I release them, I cannot wait!

I am also excited about the future as we have a lot of positive interest so now, we are carefully stepping into some new directions.

What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs looking to start their own jewellery brand?

To be an innovator and a designer is to be constantly growing and learning and to be patient. It’s important to be passionate about the job, to be industrious, to successfully execute ideas, and to learn by doing.

Work hard, make original work and be patient.

There are few museum openings as highly anticipated as M+ in Hong Kong. The construction started almost 10 years ago and it’s been designed by Herzog & de Meuron, who famously converted Bankside Power Station into Tate Modern. At 65,000 square-metre, this has become another jewel in the architectural highlights of Hong Kong. The most prominent feature is undoubtedly the stupendous LED system display facing Victoria Harbour which will be displaying M+ content.

You might be wondering what we can expect to see in their 17,000 square-metre of exhibition space, which spans over 33 exhibition galleries. There will be in excess of 1,500 pieces of artwork from M+ collections. They will have six thematic exhibitions that will focus on Hong Kong and Chinese pieces from the 1960s and 1970s respectively to the present day to work that might be familiar to a British audience in the form of Anthony Gormley: Asian Field. He famously created Angel of the North and in this installation, the famous British sculptor has created tens of thousands of clay figurines along with over 300 villagers from a Guangdong village in just five days back in 2003. A masterpiece that highlights the vastness and populous nature of the country.

And no modern-day museum is complete without commissioned pieces which they’ll be displaying in their public spaces such as on their roof garden, their grand staircase, etc. They are two museum shops, a café, and a particularly innovative sounding Korean restaurant in the form of Mosu. Much like Tate Modern, they run a membership scheme to help support their work and continue developing the museum in the coming decades.

The whole project is part of the expansive West Kowloon Cultural District Development that will include a Hong Kong Palace Museum which opens in 2022 with items from the Forbidden City Museum in Beijing that are rarely allowed to leave the country. And the whole area is a must-visit destination for all cultural aficionados, making Hong Kong stand out as a cultural hub as well as the financial centre which is it renowned for.

Online registrations for tickets opened recently leading to an immediate crashing of the booking system which is always a sure-fire sign you have a commercial hit on your hands. The admission fee for non-residents is $120 for adults and $60 for children aged between 7 and 17, seniors aged 60 or over, full-time students, and guests with access requirements

The museum opens officially on the 12th of November.
