If you’ve never considered a botanical safari, then there is a very special corner of the Cape just waiting to change your mind about flowers. More specifically Fynbos, the flowering plant endemic to this southernmost tip of South Africa. Both the smallest and richest of the world’s six Floral Kingdoms, there is more biodiversity here than the Amazon rainforest.

Set between the mountains and sea, Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is made up of 2,500 hillside hectares blanketed by this native shrub – a thriving ecosystem of which 70% of species grow nowhere else on earth. This is also the only lodge in South Africa where you can spot the “Marine Big Five” – great white sharks, southern right whales, seals, penguins, and dolphins where two oceans collide down in Walker Bay.

Luxury Meets Conservation in a Botanical Paradise

What started as a humble bed and breakfast, has since grown into two boutique lodges, that now make up one particularly special hotel. While Grootbos cocoons its guests in nothing but five-star luxury, the reserve’s primary focus is to protect, nurture and restore the indigenous and endangered landscape on which it sits – something the custodians of the reserve the Lutzeyer family, have worked towards since acquiring the property in 1991.

Here, among the flowering Fynbos and gnarled milkwood forests, guests are encouraged to immerse themselves in nature, with specialist guides eager to share their knowledge of this biodiverse wonderland.

A Botanical Safari

As soon as we arrive, we sit down with a specialist guide to work out what activities we’d like to do during our stay – from responsibly whale watching tours to shark diving at Gansbaai and coastal guided walking safaris.

While the focus is on the experiential, no detail has been overlooked when it comes to the rooms. Ours is part of the Garden Lodge – one of 11 free-standing suites set among the bush, through ancient forest and greenery alive with the hum of wildlife.

An unassuming stone exterior hides our expansive suite – with a lounge and wood-burner for a cosy Scandi feel and a selection of books to keep even the most fervent naturalist happy. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors open onto a private deck with sun loungers – a haven surrounded by the chorus of the Fynbos. Picture windows frame the view from a plush oversized bed, out over the dense Fynbos and down to the windswept sands of Walker Bay. In the bathroom, a free-standing soaking tub sits in a corner window, so close to the uninterrupted nature around you you’d swear you were bathing al fresco.

The separate Forest Lodge offers a further equally luxurious 16 suites, with open fires and two with private pools – all sequestered away within the Milkwood forest and offering similarly stunning views, the only difference the slightly more sleek feel to the common spaces. There are also two private villas which include a personal chef and guide, perfect for families or groups of friends.

Indulge in Nature’s Symphony: Sunset Delights at Garden Lodge

Sunset at the Garden Lodge is a real event – guests congregating around the freeform pool with a gin and tonic (mixed with a sprig of rosemary from the herb garden) as the sun sinks in an amber flash. We sit down to a candlelit dinner on the verandah – surrounded by the nighttime sounds of the bush and the occasional quacking of the Cape River Frog. Our host Princess expertly guides us through the locally sourced four-course menu – from the mussels which come from nearby Gansbaai to the freshest herbs and vegetables grown here on the reserve. Even the honey for our ice cream is produced here – made from the rare Erica Irregularis its deep floral flavour is one to be savoured, as it can be found nowhere else.

Aside from the thoughtful staff, this intimate hotel feels all the more special thanks to the presence of the charming owner Michael Lutzeyer, who flits between tables checking up on guests.

Generously insisting that we have a bottle of one of his favourite wines ‘The Last Syrah’ with our dinner (a limited edition bought from a friend at the Cape Winemakers Guild, an association of South Africa’s finest winemakers) – Michael kindly offers to take us out on a 4×4 botanical safari in the morning.

This is how we find ourselves up before breakfast – racing off across the patchwork of trails in one of the open-topped Landrovers. I’ve never considered myself to be interested in flowers, but Michael’s depth of knowledge and passion for this unique floral kingdom is infectious – he’s also great fun.

Exploring the Flora of the Cape with Grootbos

In the UK, he explains, there are 1,550 species of flora. Compare that to the Cape – where there are 9,500 (6,500 of which are endemic) and you start to see the significance of this region. Six new species were even discovered right here on the reserve, he tells us with a proud smile.

This is botany brought to life – with fascinating stories centred around the fynbos. From how a sunbird’s beak fits perfectly into a flower, or how the fires that ravage this land are crucial for its survival – with some plants depending on this heat to for their seeds to germinate. Every few minutes we pull to a stop, Michael having spotted something minuscule in the bushes, each with a story to tell.

We’re also able to take a guided tour of the organic farm and horticultural college – all part of Grootbos’ work to both conserve the critically endangered fynbos, as well as transform the lives of local communities.

The Sustainable Legacy of Grootbos Foundation

Established in 2003, the Grootbos Foundation has turned the reserve into a world leader in progressive luxury tourism. Every action they take, explains Michael, should benefit the community, or have a positive impact on the environment – from the fresh fruit you eat at breakfast to the recycled candles in your room.

Initially run as an agricultural training program teaching farming, beekeeping, and animal husbandry, the Growing The Future organic farm has since expanded to provide career guidance and internships focused on entrepreneurship. The farm itself is run as a commercial enterprise with all goods produced here sold back to the Grootbos Lodge and kitchen – the income providing funding for further Grootbos Foundation Projects. Even the lodge’s water supply is run as a self-sustaining business by the Foundation, with a solar-powered pump and reusable glass bottles eliminating tons of plastic waste.

At the Green Futures Indigenous Nursery, we see Grootbos’ approach to conservation in action – from chatting with one of the resident ecological researchers to the Green Futures students tending the on-site nursery – working towards the accredited courses offered by the Horticultural and Life Skills College.

Returning to the reserve in time for breakfast, we find a spread of homegrown fruits, jams and marmalades, salmon blinis and cheese from local dairies. That’s in addition to a hot a la carte menu, from which I choose the Grootbos Farm Benedict – two impossibly orange yolked eggs on a bed of spinach and micro-herbs – all from the reserve. Eaten on the sunny terrace surrounded by morning birdsong, it is quite simply bliss.

After breakfast, Michelle who runs the on-site stables (with 19 gleaming ponies and horses for all levels) takes me for a gallop high up in the hills on a black horse called Flame. The hills around us thrum with life, buzzing with birds and insects, flowers flashing past flame’s pricked ears in a haze of purple.

It’s then I realise I’m looking at this landscape afresh – with a sense of wonder for each element that creates this ecosystem. From the fynbos to the bees, chickens and vegetable gardens, Grootbos is protecting not just plants, but the people that call this place home – holistically and sustainably, this is surely the future of eco-conscious luxury travel.

I know I’ll never look at flowers the same way again.

Family camping is a fun and exciting way of parents getting away from your daily routines at work and having your kids a retreat from using their devices and gadgets. But, it must be done right in order to benefit much in learning outdoor skills from this rest and recreation. Take a look at this guide and make your camping remarkable
Choosing a Camp Site
The first thing parents should consider during camping preparations is looking for a suitable campsite, especially for starters. Since you are with your kids, a campsite must have a combination of safety and adventurous or simply a little wilder than your usual daily situation. For oldtimers, of course, you may choose campsites with much wilder ambiance compared to where you have been before. Select campsites with rivers or streams in it, with facilities where kids can safely play, and where can set campfires (just make sure to teach children with proper precautions).
When you have selected for a campsite, have an ocular visit first before bringing your kids in order for you to prepare your kids what to expect. You do not want to spoil them of the fun but you would not want them to disappoint them either.
Selecting for a Tent
Setting up tents is essential in family camping. There are a lot of varieties to choose from which can be suitable for your family. You can already buy tents with complete features such as sleeping bags, poles, partitions, and floor mats. But these can be expensive. However, if you are out of budget and considering the low cost, you can just look for metal posts, fly sheets, and groundsheets to pitch your tent.
Bringing Camping Equipment
Aside from tents, there are other types of equipment necessary in family camping. Mind you, the purpose of bringing stuff is for comfort and convenience. You can also bring your camping stove and your best mess kit which you can use for cooking and containing food. Never set this inside the tent to avoid fire accidents that may ruin the camping. You may also bring a camping table and a hiking chair. For more precaution and safety, bringing of first-aid kits is really a must especially when the kids are with you. They may boisterously play and might get hurt and injured.
However, first-timers have a tendency to bring a lot of things even those things that are not necessary like television sets, microwave ovens and even laptops. Avoid making the camping site like your home or else just stay at home.
Preparation of Camping Food
There are no specific rules about this because it is really up to your family. You might want to try exotic dishes like roasted frogs or snakes to increase the excitement. But you must also consider your children’s appetite and prefer comfort foods. What is important here is to involve the children in the preparation and cooking. You might want your kids to catch fish from the streams. Pick up fruits from trees or vegetables available at the campsite (just guide them for precaution. In this manner, it also becomes a learning experience for them.
Listing of Camping Activities
Family camping is supposed to be fun and exciting and it lies really on the activities you have set especially for kids. Most camping sites have outdoor facilities such as zip-lines, wall climbing, boat riding, fishing, and other amenities. Aside from these, you can prepare outdoor games such as race, relays, and other activities that promote competitiveness, critical-thinking, problem-solving, and socialization with others. Having all these considered in your list can help in making your family camping so much fun and enjoyable. Remember, you do not want your kids to regret this day with you and avoid having next time.
Conclusion
Campings can really be exciting especially as a family getaway vacation. So in order to really have fun and enjoy, prepare well and good. Follow this guide and have a list of must-haves. It saves you from unwanted expenses during the camping and it also saves you from the stress brought by not maximizing the opportunity just because you missed something. However, camping may not be always perfect because of the unpredictability of adventures but preparation makes you handle well the unexpected and makes you try it better next time.

Marrakech is an aesthetic dream but there is so much more to this magical city than meets the eye. We spent an enriching few days exploring every corner of the city, from the mosaic walls of the Bahia Palace to the labyrinthine alleys of the souks; and stayed in one of the city’s best-kept luxury hideaways. If you didn’t know where to look, Le Farnatchi would almost be impossible to find. Hidden in a quiet alleyway and just a short walk away from the medina, Le Farnatchi is a restful haven amidst the joyful chaos of Marrakech.

This stylish Riad has ten generously sized suites designed with a careful balance of European luxury and Moroccan flair. The architecture is breath-taking to say the least, and every room boasts handmade beds, Egyptian cotton sheets, and all the colourful touches that make it feel like a home.
Outside of your suite, the hotel has plenty of beautiful public areas to explore. It has two stunning dining rooms, a beautiful courtyard pool, and a roof garden complete with sun loungers. It is the perfect place to have a drink, watch the sunset, and maybe capture some golden hour magic too.

We recommend booking a treatment at the Farnatchi Spa, which features luxe marble hammam interiors. Here, you can gawk at the mouldings on the incredible vaulted ceilings, or better yet, indulge in a pampering session that will wash your troubles away.

For dinner, we ventured next door to the Le Trou Au Mur Restaurant, which serves up traditional Moroccan cuisine in true contemporary style. Art-deco meets local craftsmanship inside the restaurant, but the piece de resistance has to be the rooftop dining area. Atmospheric and undeniably romantic, there’s no better place in the city for a candlelit dinner than Le Trou au Mur. The restaurant has its own clay ‘mechoi’ or furnace, where our classic ‘Tangia’ was cooked. The Tangia has been described as a quintesential Marrakchia dish. Paired with a nice medium-bodied glass of red wine, and you’d be hard done to find a more delicious meal in this colourful city.

The luxury travel market is increasingly focused on tailor-made experiences rather than just the fact if you pay more, you can hope for a more enhanced experience. Hence, it is no surprise the luxury villa market has been booming in southern Europe in recent years, as travellers look for more space and a home-from-home escape. We visited The LUX MARE villas recently in a prime location in the city of Lagos in southern Portugal with jaw-dropping views of the Atlantic Ocean.

When their Norwegian owners, Egil & Birgitte Greve were looking to build their 2 state-of-the-art villas that embraced the minimalist Nordic design philosophy with the warmth of the Portuguese lifestyle, they went to the most famous local architect in town, Mário Martins. His exploration of shapes and the use of natural light has led to countless masterpieces created in The Algarve, but The LUX MARE Villas (Casa L and Casa M) is arguably his best work so far. The harmonious balance of green and blue is a soothing experience from the well-landscaped gardens of Casa M to their showpiece 22.5 metres heated infinity pool that kisses the Algarvan skyline.

During our visit, we stayed at Casa M which can host up to 12 guests with two king-sized rooms and four twin rooms. There are six bathrooms and one separate toilet, so there should never be any need for queuing. Almost all the rooms have floor-to-ceiling glass and looking onto the pool and garden area. They offer complimentary Molton Brown toiletries and luxury bathrobe and slippers.
Apart from picking a local architect and using local wood and other materials to construct the villas, the owners have sought to use local designers where possible from the cutlery and crockery that are from Vista Alegre and all branded linens are also from Portugal.
In the basement area, is a high-tech cinema room with a reclinable sofa, a pool table and selected Technogym equipment. And if that isn’t enough, guests have access to the AXN Gym situated within the renowned 5- star Cascade Wellness & Lifestyle Resort nearby.

The kitchen is decked out with high-end Gaggenau home appliances including a coffee machine that wouldn’t look out-of-place in a posh coffee house. Of course, you can cook yourself with numerous well-stocked supermarkets nearby and a fish market in town that is the envy of the region or you can treat yourself to a private chef who works regularly with the villa, The Chef Affairs who can prepare dishes like local favourites such as grilled giant king prawns and beef fillet tournedos with mushrooms and Porto wine sauce. There is also a whole range of options in town from Japanese ramen bars to Tasca Jota which champions local Portuguese ingredients from the region, with some of the team having trained with the likes of Gordon Ramsay in London.

If you are wondering what activities you might be able to partake in, they have an in-house concierge service that can cater to all your needs from yoga on the pool terrace to a sunset massage gazing into the Atlantic Ocean. For the more adventurous, there are hot-air balloon rides, go-karting, horse riding or kayaking that can be arranged. You can hire a sunseeker yacht to admire the stunning coastline or to go fishing. And you are also only minutes away from the world-famous Ponta da Piedade, stunning rock formations that give The Twelve Apostles a run for their money. The Algarvan wine scene has been picking up in recent years and about a half an hour drive away is the popular, Quinta dos Vales winery with some very accessible wines to taste as well as stunning art installations to admire. You can even buy your plot of land to grow your grapes and bottle your wine.

Next time, you are visiting Europe and looking for some Iberian sunshine, make sure you check out The LUX MARE villas.

#2 Visiting Islands/Beaches

Because of the Philippine’s characteristic of being an archipelago, it is a must that you visit at least one of the islands during your stay in the country, and you would not regret it. After all, some of the beaches in the Philippines are some of the best in the world. Let’s take Boracay and El Nido as examples.
Boracay is somehow tantamount to the Philippines when you search on google online. It is seen in booklets, magazines and online sites. It was even ranked 9th in TripAdvisor’s list 2019 and Traveler’s Choice Top 25 Beaches in Asia.
It is famous for its beaches with milk-powder-like sand. There are three stations in Boracay. The first station is the most luxurious, so celebrities and socialites choose to stay there. Station 2 on the other hand is the most crowded, so if you are a people person and you want to mingle with lots of people from around the globe, then opt for this station. Lastly, station 3 is the nearest to the port where small ferries load or unload passengers or tourists.
As noted by fellow nomad Alex Denholm of Ghost Insights, despite having three stations, they all have some things in common. All of them offer fun activities to enjoy; snorkelling, parasailing, beach hopping, scuba diving and many more water activities. Thus, it’s a must that you go to the said place before you go back to your home country.
El Nido is another flag bearer of the Philippines when it comes to the best beaches in the world and especially in Asia. It is ranked 4th in “20 Most Beautiful Beaches in the World.” by Condé Nast. CNNGo even called it the best beach in the Philippines because of its beautiful ecosystem. There, you can do island hopping, visiting small and big lagoons, snorkelling, scuba diving and many more. Thus, you cannot leave the Philippines without stepping your foot on it.

#3 Trying Public Transportation

Not many tourists from foreign countries know it, but we have some of the quirkiest modes of transportation.
There’s this Tricycle that from the name itself, you’ll know it is a three-wheel vehicle. It is basically a two-wheel vehicle but made three so that it will be able to accomodate 2 or more passengers. It is a motorcycle and there’s an attached sidecar for passengers. It is used especially if there are narrow passages or alleys going to your destination, but for experience purposes, you ride it anytime and almost anywhere. The cost per ride depends on the location, but it’s more likely less than a dollar.

Then, there’s the famous Jeepeney. It’s one of the cheapest modes of transportation in the Philippines that for every ride, you will pay a minimum of 8 pesos or more or less 0.16 dollars, and it’s also very convenient as long as you are not in a hurry. It can be considered a cheap and small version of a bus. There are two sides inside and both sides have long cushioned seats to accommodate 12-18 passengers depending on how big the Jeep is.

If you want to get out and about and do some more serious sightseeing on your vacation, you may want to consider cebu car rental. Hiring a private vehicle allows you to drive at your own pace and see the top tourist spots, without having to rely on public transport or anyone else’s timetable.

#4 Eating Famous Dishes

While this is a must when you visit any country, trying Philippine cuisine is having a glimpse of our rich history- thus knowing the Philippines more! Try Pinoy food and Eat Like Pinoy!
Adobo- it can be Chicken or Pork marinated in soy sauce and vinegar with spices. It is a stew dish that is famous for its sweetness, saltiness and sourness- truly Pinoy in flavors. Also, this is considered the national dish by many although it has that spanish influence, and as a matter of fact, Adobo came from the spanish word adobar, which means to marinate.
Lechon- some consider this the best Pork dish. It’s whole Pig stuffed and roasted until the skin turns golden brown and crispy. The inside has that juicy, flavorful meat because of the spices used to stuff the Pig before roasting.
The runners up for the must try food are Sisig, Sinigang, Chicharon, Rice cakes, Street foods, like Grilled Isaw or Chicken intestine, Proben or breaded Chicken proventriculus and many more.

Final words

It is not every day that you get to visit the Philippines, so better prepare your wallet, yourself and especially your to do list. While there are so many things you can do in the country, you have a very limited number of days, but the tips above can be done if you are staying in the country for a week or two. Let’s say your first 3 days is for the beach, and your next few days is for the mountain climbing. The other two can be done while you are on the island or before you reach the mountain proper.

The UK had many brilliant road trip locations to consider which will show you the great beauty and diversity of the UK along the way – here are a few of the best destinations to consider. And for those who prefer the city life that London offers, there are tons of Cheap Entertainment In London to check out.

The Cotswolds
The Cotswolds is one of the prettiest areas in all of the UK and ideal for a road trip because you get to see the picture-perfect English countryside along with a handful of charming small villages. This is a great place for a holiday because you can enjoy long walks out in nature, afternoons in traditional English pubs and relaxing in an idyllic cottage.
Norfolk Coast
If you like to be by the sea on your holidays, then you have a few good options in the UK, including Norfolk coast on the eastern coastline. This is an incredibly peaceful and tranquil part of the world where you can explore the beautiful coastline and surrounding nature, plus you can also visit via Norwich, which is a lovely city with stunning architecture.
The Lake District
Nature lovers will adore the Lake District which is one of the most beautiful areas in the entire world and somewhere with mountains, forests, lakes, coastline, villages and towns so there is a tremendous amount to explore here. There are lots of good routes for a road trip here where you will be treated to mesmerizing views of the natural beauty on offer.

North Wales features dramatic, rugged natural beauty with plenty to explore on a road trip. This will include driving through the breathtaking Snowdonia National Park (be sure to stop off and explore) across the Menai Strait and through to Anglesey. The West Country is another beautiful part of the UK with beautiful natural scenery and a range of cool, pretty and interesting towns and cities. Somerset is one fate best places for a road trip with the Cheddar Gorge being one of the main highlights – this is a beautiful limestone gorge in the Mendip Hills with imposing cliff faces on both sides that make for a dramatic, winding drive.
Road Trip Tips
A road trip is quite different to any other type of vacation, so it is helpful if you know how to make the most out of these experiences. First, you need to make sure that you have a car that is up to the task as road trips can be demanding – this means that you might want to arrange a lease from somewhere like ZenAuto.
It is also important that you carefully plan the trip, including bookings into any hotels so that you always know where you need to get to and scooter insurance should you need it when exploring. You should also be sure to take regular breaks and take turns driving if you are with others that can drive (but make sure that everyone is covered).
The UK has many brilliant locations for a road trip with these being just a few that you will show you the great beauty on offer throughout the UK.

A spa seekers paradise, romantic hideaway, and wedding venue of dreams, Barnsley House is set to make waves as the premier wedding venue of the Cotswolds. Bottle of bubbly in hand, Debby Donnelly-Addison checks out this opulent hidden gem.

The sleet pelted down on the window as I slid deeper down into the bubbles, watching the carefully curated lawns of the walled garden turn from spruce green to frosted white. All my worries slipped away as I sipped my champage and laid back in the huge stone bathtub of the Secret Garden suite at Barnsley House, watching a robin bounce across the loungers on the patio outside. The perfect ending to the perfect weekend, I could understand why this is arguably the most romantic retreat in the Cotswolds.

Featuring an abundance of splendorous rooms and suites, each boasting sumptuous, butter soft beds and enchanting views of the meadows beyond, Barnsley House is nothing short of a dream. The accommodations are spread around the main house, some are tucked away down leafy passageways through the magnificent gardens, and there’s also Home Farm Cottage, which sleeps an extra six people. Generous in size and equipped with seriously Insta-worthy bathrooms, you will never want to leave.

Open to the public as a hotel and available for private hire for weddings, the ebullient and considerate staff at Barnsley House are conscious of respecting each of their clientele in equal measure. “We don’t want the hotel to become a wedding factory, we have our regulars and our locals and we want everyone to be able to enjoy our venue” Emma, the wedding coordinator informed me. It doesn’t matter if you’re spending £400 or £40,000, you will receive the same warm hospitality regardless.

It’s easy to see why Barnsley House is so popular for weddings. The enchanting gardens created by Rosemary Verey are packed with wonderous nooks and crannies, perfect for capturing many magical photos of your big day. The ornate lawns, immaculate terraces and knot gardens provide an idyllic backdrop at any time of year. Weather permitting, you can even get married outdoors on the lawn. There is no traffic noise here, so you’ll be reciting your vows over nothing but birdsong and the odd rustling of leaves a rabbit hops through the hedges.

After the whoops and cheers of your loved ones as you make things official, you can hold a reception for up to 70 people in the hotel’s Potager Restaurant, or there’s the meadow marquee for a larger affair. You can drink and dance the night away under the famous Cotswolds sunset before retreating to your room for a blissful night’s sleep.

Of course, you don’t have to be getting married to stay here. Barnsley House is perfect for a romantic retreat, weekend with friends or family, or a solo stay in this wonderous part of the world. Whilst the Cotswolds has a lot to offer, you simply cannot stay here without experiencing dinner at the Potager Restaurant. Set in an elegant dining room overlooking the gardens and led by head chef Francesco Volgo, the food here has a heavy local influence with a European edge and flourish of Italian flair.

Much of the fresh produce, herbs and salads are grown in the gardens here and picked fresh on the day of serving (even the vegetable gardens here are beautifully structured). Regardless of meal type or time of day, the service is friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. For my evening meal I had the fluffiest cheese souffle imaginable, which proved to be quite the hit in the dining room (most of our group ordered and devoured it), followed by a perfectly seared steak and golden chunky chips. The bread, nutty and light, had been freshly baked that day and was a welcome change from the usual dry offerings you experience in most hotels. For dessert, I had a melting chocolate pudding topped with honeycomb and a salted caramel ice cream that was to die for. The restaurant staff are attentive, yet not imposing, ensuring that drinks were topped up, plates were stealthily cleared away, and course were dishes up promptly and without fuss. No awkward waiting around or talking over a messy table. the stellar service meant we could enjoy our food and company without issue.

After dinner, we followed a lantern lit pathway through the gardens to the private cinema. Yes, Barnsley House has it’s own private cinema across from the main house. Seating 30 and equipped with a fabulously retro popcorn machine, the cinema boasts cosy pink sofas and fluffy blankets, so you can snuggle up and enjoy a movie with your loved ones. The scent of popcorn, comfortable surroundings and sense of exclusivity makes this a pretty special experience.

If you fancy something a little special before bedtime (or any time of day, for that matter) then a visit to the spa is a must. With a heated outdoor pool (no “gasp” moments as you step into cold water), a herbivarium containing a sauna and steam room, and 5 individual treatment rooms for massage, facials, and all manner of gorgeousness,

you cannot help but fall into a state of deep relaxation here. I was fortunate enough to indulge in a dip in the pool just as the sun started to set. With the heady scent of crackling wood fires in the air and the cleansing steam of the pool jets as the sky started to turn lavender, the experience was one of utter bliss. I bundled myself up in one of the spa’s super fluffy robes and relaxed in the sumptuous lounge overlooking the fields beyond whilst enjoying a glass of water infused with fresh herbs from the garden. As with the main house, it’s the small, considerate details that make this experience so special. The spa and rooms are furnished with fresh fruit and water. There are newspapers and board games should you wish to unplug from social media for the weekend. You feel cared for, cocooned. Barnsley House swaddles you up and leaves you to rest and relax, a world away from noisy roads, social media, and the plethora of distractions in day to day life.

Come bedtime, whilst your pillowy bed will no doubt be calling your name, you must have a dip in your beautifully appointed bathroom. With some rooms featuring twin tubs, roll top baths and flat screen televisions, the bathrooms are equipped with mood lighting akin to candlelight. Despite the winter chill outside, I filled my tub with steaming water infused with some of the complimentary bath salts, flung the windows open, and enjoyed the evening song as a blackbird took centre stage in the tree outside my room. Feeling more relaxed than I can ever remember, I floated over to my four poster bed and fell into a slumber so deep that I slept through my alarm. I do advise that you take up their kind offer of a wake up call, you will be so relaxed and deep in sleep that you will no doubt need it. Collecting the complimentary newspaper from outside of my room, I enjoyed a cup of Tea Pigs breakfast tea on the window seat overlooking the garden before heading down to breakfast.

As with dinner, breakfast is a quality affair. With a decadent selection of continental offerings, the kitchen will also whip up a hot breakfast should you feel like something a little more hearty. I had a creamy eggs benedict made with local eggs and more of their beautiful fresh bread. With free flowing coffee and views towards the wedding ceremony lawn, breakfast here is a relaxed, friendly affair. As always, the ingredients are locally sourced, and it shows. The quality of produce and care in which it has been prepared is evident, making this a meal to be celebrated rather than a quick bite at the start of the day. If you cannot contemplate climbing out of your cosy bed (and who can blame you), you can enjoy a continental breakfast in the comfort of your room. You’re the focus here, and if you’d rather enjoy a flaky croissant and hot coffee in bed, the staff here will make it happen. Nothing is too much.

The beauty of Barnsley House is, despite it’s grand exterior and decadent furnishings, it still feels like a home from home. On returning from the cinema, I instinctively went to remove my shoes when stepping inside (there is no requirement to do this, I just felt so at ease). The staff treat you like family, professional, yet warm. It’s a particularly special, borderline magical combination that is rare and only usually found in boutique locations such as this. If this is how I am treated as a weekend guest, I am both excited and thrilled for anyone who choses Barnsley House as their wedding venue. An absolute dream and living up to their reputation as a “Pride of Britain Hotel”, Barnsley House has to be one of the most romantic, decadent hotels the UK has to offer.

I left Barnsley House relaxed, renewed, and most certainly planning to visit again in the near future. If you’re looking for quality, care, and next level hospitality in an area of outstanding beauty, a visit to Barnsley House is a must.

Bookings for Barnsley House can be made online directly at https://www.prideofbritainhotels.com/hotels/barnsley-house/ I couldn’t possibly recommend one particular room or suite as they are all exceptional, but the Secret Garden Suite is a must for anyone wanting a seriously luxurious romantic break.

Weddings at Barnsley House start at around £25,000 Off Peak one night midweek based on 70 guests. This includes accommodation, food, wine, venue hire. Peak two night weekend based on 70 guests cost around £43,000, including accommodation, food, wine, venue hire. Contact Emma for more details at Emma.sharp@barnsleyhouse.com.
