It might just be us, but isn’t January a bit of a slog? The mornings are dark, the jollity of the festive season has definitely waned and everything’s just a little bit flat. Unless one has a sunny holiday booked to look forward to, it’s a tough old month to claw the way through.

Thankfully there are gems like Cambridge’s University Arms to cocoon us from the harsh truths of winter. If you’re looking for a cosy, indulgent weekend escape, this might be the one.

Located in the historic heart of the city, the hotel reopened in 2018 after a serious facelift. Since opening in 1834 it’s been through several incarnations – we’ll gloss over the monstrosity that was the facade in the 60s – but architect John Simpson and interior designer Martin Brudnizki. Have remained faithful to original look and feel of the property, whilst bringing Martin’s signature English interiors; you’ll recognise his style if you’ve ever been to one of The Ivy restaurants.

The 192 rooms and suites are bedecked with bespoke leather-padded writing desks, low ottomans and tiered chandeliers in playful colours. Each of the suites, some of which occupy the top floor with balconies looking out over Parker’s Piece, have bookshelves individually curated around their subject by Mayfair’s Heywood Hill. Staying in the Darwin suite for the night, mine was resplendent with titles on nature, evolution and the British countryside, from huge coffee table Taschen tomes full of stunning botanical illustrations, to biographies from some of the world’s most eminent explorers.

It’s certainly cosy; our suite was home to an enormous velvet sofa, a little reading corner next to windows overlooking Cambridge’s famous green space Parker’s Piece and oh, the bed! King size, mountains of pillows, crisp white sheets. I bundled into it after a post-prandial bath, wrapped in the prerequisite fluffy robe, and was convinced I would never be able to get out again. The bathroom too is a stunner; underfloor heating, the most luxurious claw foot tub with its own pot of Dr Harris bath salts and his and hers sinks (the secret, my mother once told me, to a long and happy marriage).

The little details are what make locations like this next level spectacular; the branded chocolate left out in the room for an evening nibble, the tea mugs illustrated with a stunning line drawing of the property and the handmade box in which they rested, all in the hotel’s signature shade of almost Tiffany blue. Every little part of the room was beautiful.

Brudnizki’s signature style echoes throughout the whole hotel, not just in the rooms. The library features an original carved fireplace – the perfect spot for a morning coffee with the weekend papers – while original stained glass windows depicting scenes and crests Cambridge’s colleges can be found on each floor. Breakfast is served in Parker’s Tavern, designed to mimic a University dining room with its wooden tables and paintings depicting rowing scenes; a buffet affair with a serious selection of baked goods accompanied with all the usuals and a cooked and continental spread.

Ensure there’s time for you to enjoy dinner at Parker’s Tavern. Chef Tristan Welch has developed a menu of homely British classics, with some characterful reinterpretations. Having trained in Europe’s best kitchens alongside the likes of the late Gary Rhodes, Gordon Ramsay and Michel Roux Jnr, he returned home to Cambridge to cook the classics of his roots. He sources not just by what’s in season, but by what’s fresh each day, not just relying on local markets but on produce from farmers he knows by name.

My dinner was sublime. A slow-cooked truffled duck egg on toast with truffle mayo and sherry vinegar, followed by a delicate nut brown buttered sole with coastal herbs and brown shrimps and a Cambridge burnt cream for pudding. Divine.

So January doesn’t need to be that bad. Aside from the fact that Cambridge is a delightful city to explore for a weekend away, with hotels like University Arms to check in to, it’s a fairly easy decision to book yourself in.

Rooms from £164 per night.

University Arms is also offering a Valentine’s Package, available to book for the night of 14th February 2020. Rates from £335 based on two people sharing, including an overnight stay, a bottle of champagne and chocolates on arrival, a three course meal for two at Parker’s Tavern and late check-out.

Nestled on the serine south-eastern coast of Mauritius you will find Le Chaland Beach, an unspoilt stretch of golden sand lying alongside a rich, deep turquoise ocean that is home to Anantara Iko Resort.

This sun kissed island in the Indian Ocean is magical and doesn’t disappoint. It lived up to everything I expected, unblemished shorelines, natural wonders, culture and a dash of luxury courtesy of Anantara, a new deluxe five-star resort that successfully combines authentic Mauritius with high end sustainable chic.

Just 100m from the beach and enveloped in a lush green nature reserve, this secluded hotel has made a conscious effort to blend in with its stunning surroundings and where possible use sustainable initiatives to preserve the natural environment. The resort successfully brings the beauty of the outdoors indoors using lots of locally sourced materials around the property. Recycled volcanic stone combined with a scattering of driftwood crafted by local artisans, touch everything from the reception, bedrooms and restaurants. At the heart of the resort is the spectacular 30-metre ozone-based infinity pool which uses fewer chemicals and is more efficient than a regular pool. Other eco touches include solar technology for water heating in all the guest rooms, water is reused for irrigation and cleaning and the food waste goes out to local farms.

Each of the 164 stylish rooms and suites are spacious and sophisticated with clean lines and minimal décor enhanced with a splash of ocean blue and wood making it feel warm and welcoming. Wake up and take in the views of the Indian Ocean or flourishing tropical gardens direct from your day bed on the balcony. For me the measure of a hotel is in the bathroom and I loved the large double sinks and rain shower but the jewel in the crown was the free standing bathtub that dominated the room, perfect for a long soak at the end of the day. Eight luxury Pool Villas will be available to book from April 2020.

Anantara is a foodie’s dream, under the watchful eye of Executive Chef, Didier Jacob the resort offers multiple dining options that reflect the island’s rich cultural heritage. Taste the authentic flavours and influences of Mauritius at one of the amazing five restaurants. For me, staying at Anantara was a real culinary experience. I got to jump into the Island’s foodie culture and savour cuisine with French, Indian and Creole influences. A huge highlight was the private dining offer where you can indulge in something a bit special with your own bespoke menu, personal chef and private butler. The hotel set up a private table on the beach where I got to soak up the remarkable setting, outstanding views of the ocean and enjoy some delicious dishes under the stars.

It’s easy to relax at Anantara, kick back and get into the Mauritian vibe. The team of attentive staff quickly make you feel welcome and go all out to make sure you enjoy your stay. Reset and reconnect at the onsite spa where you can unwind with a range of therapeutic treatments including traditional massage therapies, detox treatments and hammam wellness. My energy levels are always high and at times I struggle to wind it down a notch so retreating to the spa was a great way for me to switch off and slow down. I soon loosened up with one of the signature massages and a few days into my stay I was back for the hammam treatment, I left feeling relaxed yet invigorated.

There’s plenty to do on this south east corner of the island, if you don’t want to relax on the beach or by the pool. Just 15 minutes’ drive away is Mahebourg, a cute picture postcard town with a pretty harbour and vibrant, bustling market, perfect for exploring. Don’t leave without swimming in the Indian Ocean, take a catamaran trip to get a unique view of this beautiful island, catch the sunset and go for a swim before heading back to shore. Mauritius is steeped in history and the hotel hosts campfire chats on the beach after dinner with their resident ‘Man in Mauritius’, Marcel Noe, who brings to life the island’s historic battles between the British and French. Enjoy the anecdotal tales delivered with knowledge and passion while roasting marshmallows over the fire. A little further away is Black River Gorges National Park, famous for its waterfalls, vistas and hiking, and for the more adventurous, quad biking and zip lining.

Whether you’re a beach lover, culture and history buff, nature enthusiast, foodie or sporty adventurer, Anantara has something for everyone and I can’t way to go back. Mauritius you really were something special!

A stay at Anantara Iko Mauritius Resort costs from £335 (390 Euros) per room per night on a half board basis. For more information visit www.anantara.com

Switzerland is one of the most stunning countries in the world, with mountains and lakes, hiking and kayaking, adventure and relaxation. And if you want a city that is going to deliver all of these things and more, Zurich is the place for you.

Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland and is located in north-central Switzerland at the northwestern tip of Lake Zurich, where in the summer you can find locals swimming in the lake, having a picnic and taking part in an array of water activities. And in winter you can find mulled wine, Christmas markets and fondue.

In Zurich, everything revolves around the water, but of course there are also many cultural elements to this city, including the Swiss National Museum, the Kunsthaus and newer Theater 11 in Oerlikon.

For a trip to Zurich, no weekend break is complete without a stay at B2 Boutique Hotel + Spa. Located in the former Hürlimann brewery, B2 Boutique Hotel + Spa is a quirky hotel, boldly designed around the old brewery. And the hotel is perfectly located in the Enge area, making it a great stay for my weekend in Zurich. BONUS: It is only a ten minute tram journey away the main streets and Lake Zurich.

The hotel is sprawled across three buildings, and four-storeys, with 60 rooms for guests to enjoy. In what was once the mash house is now a sprawling lobby with lush sofas, roaring fire and tables held up by books.

And the best bit?! Just behind the lobby is The Library where over 33,000 books are placed across three 36-foot tall walls. The style of the hotel is where luxury meets industrial, and I loved how they incorporated small elements of what the building used to be, set against plush fabrics.

The rooms are all bright and spacious, and our beautiful room was known as the Hürlimann Executive Room, with large king-side bed, open bathroom and direct access to the spa. The room had a gorgeous airy feel, with white curtains, beautifully high ceilings and oak wooden flooring throughout.

And much like the lobby, the bedrooms, had an air of effortless style, from the books on display above the bed, to the brass pendant lighting. The bathroom was an exhibitionist’s paradise with glass walls, that looked on to the room and a rainfall shower to feel refreshed before a day of exploring Zurich. As I entered my bedroom, I quickly fell in love with the oak flooring and signature armchairs. My room feels luxurious and comforting, and each design element gives me a calmness I haven’t experienced before. Of course, I already expected the standard amenities such as a television, a minibar, and a coffee-making area, completing any tourist’s hotel stay.

This was not just a hotel either, and on the top floor and basement levels of the hotel, you can also find the award-winning B2 Boutique Spa, with two areas for guests to enjoy. Upstairs there is a rooftop hydrotherapy pool, with views across the city. And then downstairs there is a low-lit network of basement-level caverns set with wood-panelled baths designed to look like barrels, a dark meditation pool, foot baths, heated loungers and an array of Roman-Irish baths, where you can spend a whole day if you follow their recommended treatment.

The spa is owned by a separate company, but hotel guests get reduced rates and get private access before 9am in the morning. At times it got quite busy up on the roof, so it’s worth rising early for to really experience everything the spa has to offer. Indeed, waking up at B2 Boutique Hotel and Spa is an extraordinary experience. The place is unique and magnificent, perfect for relaxing and sleeping after a day tour in Zurich. Enjoy the luxurious ambiance, accommodating staff members, and rejuvenating spa treats.

I also enjoyed the delicious breakfast buffet they served each morning here. I was excited when I started drinking wine and other alcoholic beverages at the Wine Library with perfect pairings, including beef burgers and pasta. The excellent food and drinks with great people around can complete any tourist’s Zurich experience.

Many accommodation options are available in Zurich, depending on your personal preference and budget. For apartment stays in Zurich, visit Homelike at https://www.thehomelike.com/search/apartments/zurich.

The Swiss National Museum is only more or less two kilometers from the hotel and about three kilometers away from the University of Zurich. Its proximity to the university and other amenities makes Homelike an accessible accommodation for tourists, guests, and international students.

Cardiff is a city in the UK that our writer Rachel McAlley had never visited and it was on her 2019 bucket list, so when she was asked if she would like to stay at the contemporary voco St David’s on behalf of House of Coco Magazine she jumped at the chance.

The drive from Yorkshire took a whopping 7 and half hours, but when she arrived she couldn’t have asked for a better welcome.

I arrived with my fiancé and our daughter to a very warm welcome from the check-in team. We were offered Welsh Cakes as a gift upon arrival, which were super tasty and a wonderful treat to enjoy at reception.

The Christmas decorations adorned the front of the hotel and inside the main lobby area, with a number of stunning Christmas trees dotted around the seating and lift areas, all twinkling and bright.

We were offered a hand with luggage to our first floor room, and once on the first floor we realised how stunning the atrium was, with a view overlooking the entire atrium from the ground floor to the top floor, and once in the room our view was of the waterfront at Cardiff Bay and all the boats moored in the bay area.

After checking out the gorgeous room, with two double beds, large flat-screen TV, good-sized table and excellent wardrobe space, we decided to unpack and head straight to the leisure facilities and have a swim in the voco St David’s swimming pool.

Plenty of fun was had in the pool, a relaxing swim and a little time spent in the Jacuzzi before heading into the changing rooms to get ready for dinner. We popped our swim gear back in the hotel room and went for a pre-dinner drink in the hotel restaurant followed by dinner. It was filled with happy revellers at their annual Christmas party, which meant that the atmosphere was electric and buzzing with talk of shopping, presents and Santa.

The restaurant was a seriously comfortable place to dine with large sofas and wide relaxing chairs at each table, with oodles of space between tables, and even though every single table was taken, there was never a sense of chaos or being rushed to leave, we spent a good 2 hours at the table enjoying dinner.

We opted for salt and pepper calamari, a bread basket, and san choy bow (lettuce and spicy beef wraps) to start with, followed by a rib eye steak, house burger, and kids chicken lollipops, and we were too full for dessert! The lettuce and spicy beef wraps and the steak were the standout dishes from the meal.

Back to the room, for an evening of TV, a cup of tea, and a great night’s sleep in the comfiest of beds.

Breakfast was served in the restaurant and was one of the best we have had in a long time, the selection was vast and spanned across two different restaurant rooms with breads and pastries being served on the bar, fruit, cereal, cheese, juices and yoghurts from a large table in the bar area, and hot food including the full Welsh breakfast, pancakes, and waffles in a side restaurant room.

The breakfast really was something to rave on about, and the choices were immense, plus an extra menu for all the dishes not served on the hot plates including; eggs Benedict, porridge, kippers, vegan dishes and more from the on table menu. What a great way to kick start the day.

We decided to venture into Cardiff for a browse and to do some sightseeing. We started the day by taking a lovely brisk walk from voco St David’s across to Mermaid Bay where we caught the water bus around the bay area into Cardiff Castle gardens, where we embarked and enjoyed a stroll into the city.

After a day spent Christmas shopping, visiting St David’s shopping centre, and the gorgeous quaint streets of High Street Arcade, Royal Arcade, and Castle Quarter Arcade, we spent the late afternoon wandering the Cardiff Christmas Market which was filled with the smell of mulled wine, and German hot dogs – and a wonderful Christmassy atmosphere.

Once back at voco St David’s we dressed for dinner and booked a table at the hotel restaurant for our final evening in Cardiff Bay. There was a lovely singer performing an ambient selection of songs in the restaurant whilst we dined and watched the Saturday evening go by.

Post dinner we took a sneaky peak at the Christmas party room that was in full swing, and it looked fantastic, each table was covered with pretty festive place settings and Christmas crackers.

Back to the hotel room for a little Saturday night TV, and an emotional 8 year old who didn’t want to leave Voco St David’s the following morning.

Checkout was as easy and wonderful as check-in, with the reception team chatting about our visit to Cardiff and our thoughts on the hotel, which I can honestly say were excellent.

Perfect for business, ideal for a couples getaway, and fantastic for families – what more you do you need from a hotel in the capital of Wales.

If you are thinking of visiting Cardiff in the near future we can’t recommend the 5-Star voco St David’s highly enough, from the friendly and welcoming staff to the comfortable spacious room, and the tasty restaurant food to the remarkable Cardiff Bay location, this really is a stunning hotel with breathtaking views and an unbelievably relaxed and contemporary ethos.

Ever noticed that French women have gorgeous skin? I am yet to meet a French woman who doesn’t glow like they’ve just had a facial. For years I put it down to good diet and genetics until a recent trip to the Mont-Blanc region. While I was there, I visited Les Thermes Spa in Saint-Gervais and here I discovered the secret to great skin.

Since 1807, the thermal baths in Saint-Gervais, Mont-Blanc boast the benefits of spring water, a natural resource that runs from the Mont-Blanc mountain range. The Saint-Gervais thermal spring waters are high in sulphur and have acquired minerals and trace elements during their millennia-long journey through the alpine underground meaning they’re bursting with benefits that support healthy, radiant skin. For nearly 6,000 years, these natural spring waters have run beneath the rocks of Mont-Blanc before springing to the surface at a temperature of exactly 39 degrees.

Located at the foot of the Mont-Blanc, in a magnificent 10-hectare tree lined park Les Thermes Spa uses thermal water famous for its healing properties to treat skin complaints, heal, restore, soothe and balance the skins epidermis. The French are ahead of the curve when it comes to skincare, it’s part of their culture with French girls and boys practicing good skincare habits as early as age 10.

The Spa has a clinic, made up of medical professionals such as dermatologists, ENT specialists, Physiotherapists and General Practitioners that use the thermal water and its numerous healing properties to treat skin conditions like acne, eczema, psoriasis, scarring as well as asthma, tonsillitis, and burns.
I got to spend the afternoon at Les Thermes and experience the spa and thermal baths. The spa programme takes you on a wellness journey through relaxation workshops, saunas at different temperatures, steam baths and several indoor and outdoor pools all using thermal water and each delivering a unique sensory experience.

The ground floor at Les Thermes is inspired by the water’s journey through the depths of the earth combining an indoor and outdoor zone where you follow a sequence of hydro experiences taking in plunge pools, hydro pools and a warm jacuzzi. The outdoor setting is spectacular, pools and sauna cabins are flanked by lush gardens and greenery with breath-taking views of the mountains. This relaxing environment awakens all the senses yet has a calm vibe that comes from being in such a beautiful location. Upstairs in the spa, you’ll find light and sound booths, a relaxing herbal tea room and steam rooms. This floor is dedicated to sensations and represents water throughout the seasons using light and sound. The spa also offers a range of massages and treatments with thermal water at the heart of each one.

After a couple of hours experiencing the hydro pools and thermal baths, I emerged feeling recharged and relaxed. I immediately noticed the difference in my skin, normally after swimming or going to the spa I suffer from tight, itchy skin but mine felt soft and after a day my eczema appeared less red. The skin care range at Les Thermes compliments the treatments and because our skin is unique, they have their own dedicated area to diagnose your skin type and help you find the products best suited to your skin and needs. The team of advisors take you through their skin care range which uses 100% thermal water combined with alpine plant extracts. My skin can suffer from breakouts and I’m reluctant to try anything new in case it irritates me, but I loved these products. After just two weeks using the cleanser my skin had fewer blemishes and friends commented on how well I looked. Their 24h Hydrating Serum healed some small patches of eczema and left my skin plump and glowing with that ‘je ne sais quoi’ air that French women effortlessly rock.

If you’re looking to plan the PERFECT doggy road trip with your four-legged best friend, look no further, because #TeamCocopup Charlie has got you covered. We embarked – on what could potentially be – the dreamiest dog-friendly road trip ever created. Our next stop takes us to Penzance for some quintessential village living at Chapel House.

The Chapel House is like a home away from home in Penzance and is perfectly located in one of the town’s most delightful streets. You won’t find a better base to explore this alluring coastal town. Across the street from Chapel House, there is the aforementioned chapel, and a few steps up the road there is the Admiral Benbo (which features a peculiar figurine on its roof) and the Cornish Kitchen.

The Chapel House itself occupies an impressive Georgian building, which was originally built in 1790. Some of its most notable residents include Admiral Samuel hood Linzee of the HMS Temeraire, and Penzance’s own influential Carne family. Today, Chapel House is a vision of modern luxury. Inside the main house, you will find all of the house’s original features imbued with a touch of modern elegance. The main house is bathed in natural light and reflects the same colour palette as the calming sea views in the harbour. There is a stunning drawing room, a quirky kitchen area, and an outdoor area that also has a jacuzzi perfect for slightly chilly autumn evenings.

We stayed in the newly refurbished duplex rooms, which featured a minimalist bedroom on the ground floor and an open plan living/dining room in the second floor. Here you can see panoramic views of Penzance, or simply cosy up on the couch. TeamCocopup Charlie immediately found his spot right by the log burner, and enjoyed the village walks around the lovely town of Penzance.

Don’t leave Penzance without indulging in some fish and chips at Fraser’s, which is one of the UK’s most sustainable chippies. Located just a (literal) stone’s throw away from the ocean, Fraser’s offers the freshest fish around and also some organic doggy ice cream for your pups too. This family-run establishment has won the coveted Harbour Lights award and also has some gluten free options.

If you’re looking to plan the PERFECT doggy road trip with your four-legged best friend, look no further, because #TeamCocopup Charlie has got you covered. We embarked – on what could potentially be – the dreamiest dog-friendly road trip ever created. Our next stop takes us St Ives to ultra-luxurious beachfront lodges at Carbis Bay. Safe to say, you haven’t seen a beach house like this before.

The Carbis Bay Hotel is a modern British paradise, and the newly opened beach lodges – are nothing short of spectacular. Carbis Bay Hotel is located right on St. Ives beach and offers an unparalleled luxury beach experience. In fact, the risk in describing the beach lodges at Carbis Bay is that you might run out of superlatives.

We stayed in the luxury lodge, which was three floors of seaside chic. The top floor is your own private roof garden and sundeck, which features your own Villeroy & Boch hot tub. The second floor features three en-suite bedrooms, two of which have their own panoramic sea views of St. Ives beach. The master bedroom also has a handsome roll top bath. Oh, and did we mention that the Perrin & Rowe bathrooms had heated floors too?

Down the concrete spiral staircase (another striking design feature), you will find a generous sized open lounge and dining area and a bottle of champagne upon arrival. At the lounge, Jose Baker’s relaxing coastal interiors greets you, before your eyes meet the floor-to-ceiling windows. The lounges feature a remote-controlled fireplace, Bang & Olufsen sound system, a fully stocked kitchenette, and all the luxury amenities you didn’t even know you needed. Every beach lodge has its own private sundeck and garden, and private beach access too.

Step outside into your beach garden and make your way to St. Ives beach. It is the perfect place to spend an afternoon with your pup – just be ready for some sandy paws.

Outside of the beach lodges, there’s plenty to explore in Carbis Bay Hotel. The Hotel’s Beach Restaurant is dog-friendly and offers plenty of coastal delicacies, while the award-winning C Spa is perfect for a luxurious pampering treatment. The only problem you will find with the Carbis Bay, is that you’ll never want to leave.

Nestled just north of St Maarten and 100 miles south east of the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla might not be the obvious choice when it comes to booking a Caribbean getaway, but for unpretentious solitary luxury away from the traditional tourist trail, it can’t be beaten.

This dream of an island suffered a battering at the hands of Hurricane Irma in 2017 but she’s back shining brighter than ever, with icing sugar beaches, a gastronomy scene among the best in the Caribbean and some stunning accommodations, from easy beachfront living to serious refined luxury.

Zemi Beach House falls towards the latter. Situated on Shoal Bay East in the north east of the island, it’s home to only 65 rooms across its six acres. The beachfront property is the very epitome of intimate; while its sprawling suites and beach villas might afford you all the space you need, the layout of the resort still feels deliciously private.

An experience anchored in tropical luxury, rooms are designed drawing inspiration from nature, with cane furniture, muted tones, Brazilian wood furnishings and sinks created from petrified wood in the enormous bathrooms. Each also has a view of the sea, the pleasure in which is not to be underestimated when enjoying a sundowner on your balcony and listening to the waves lap the shore.

For those who might be travelling en famille, the villas – opening out on to the beach – come equipped with full kitchens, laundry facilities, private pool access and the option to keep your fridge fully stocked throughout your visit. Alternatively the penthouse suites – favoured by certain A-listers, we heard – offer an unrivalled experience of rooftop pools and uninterrupted views of the bay.

Zemi’s spa is one of its stunning selling points. Built around a 300 year old Thai house that was trasported from Chiang Mai and rebuilt on the island, piece by piece, it offers an authentic Thai experience from the moment you cross the threshold. It’s home to the island’s only hammam, a meditation garden, an outdoor yoga deck with early morning classes, a peaceful enclave of shady hammocks for a post-treatment snooze and a body temperature vitality pool. A team of trained therapists provides a range of holistic treatments, including rejuvenating facials, marine salt scrubs, tropical scrubs and massages designed to improve circulation, hasten detoxification and release everyday tension.

While it’s a family-friendly resort, the adults-only infinity pool is a definite plus; surrounded by sun-drenched cabana beds and fringed with palm trees, it’s a peaceful alternative to the family focused main pool, looking out on to the beach. With sunscreen, bug spray, towels and water placed by the pool for guests to help themselves, and fresh fruit skewers handed out in the afternoon, it’s those little extra touches that make for a truly luxurious experience.

Despite the island being rich pickings when it comes to great food, Zemi’s offering is not to be sniffed at. The beachfront breakfast is irresistible, a literal toes-in-the-sand start to your day, while by night the restaurant transforms into a beachfront buffet with an every-changing menu, from an international menu to a local Caribbean night resplendent with hog roast and fresh grilled lobsters. Zemi prides itself on being a culinary celebration of sustainability, with its cuisine marrying fresh island seafood with imported delicacies, local herbs and seasonal produce.

For those after something a little more special, Stone is the resort’s fine dining restaurant, with a hand-crafted menu and fine wine list. For a post-prandial beverage, the elegant Bohio Bar & Lounge is open late with a dazzling cocktail menu, while the stunning Rhum Room offers over 100 small-batch, single-estate rums in its refined and elegant tasting room.

For a sublimely intimate experience, Zemi Beach House was a wonder of a hotel. From the freshly-baked cookies left on the pillow at turn down, to the beach bag in the wardrobe upon arrival and the makeup eraser cloth left in the bathroom, not details was left unthought of, and it’s little things like that which will keep guests coming back for more.

With the ski season almost upon us you need to be swift if you want to bag the best hotel. House of Coco recently visited the Mont-Blanc region of the French Alps to check out two very different places to stay this winter.

Just 45 minutes from Geneva airport is Saint Gervais, home to four villages and two ski areas, including ‘Evasion Mont-Blanc’ and with more than 400km of pistes this is the third largest ski area in France.

Nestled against the mountain of Saint-Gervais at an altitude of 1,150 metres in the heart of Saint-Nicolas is The Armancette Hotel. This brand new, 5-star hotel is a luxurious après-ski haven. Tucked away in a remote valley it offers guests a magnificent Alpine setting, with views of the Mont-Blanc as well as Mont-Vorassay.

The Armancette is an intimate boutique hotel with just 17 rooms, each one uniquely designed to reflect the environment and nature, think lots of wood, granite, stone and luxurious faux fur and silk. The rooms are elegantly designed and with an outdoor balcony you can wake up to breath-taking views across the village and valley.

This alpine jewel has successfully created a relaxed, calm vibe, making it a great place to stay if you want to chill-out after a day skiing. If you don’t fancy a drink in bar you can always retreat to the hotel library and games room to read or challenge your pals to one of the many board games. For those who want to take time out to unwind then hit the spa where you can make the most of the treatments, sauna and steam room. There’s an indoor pool with relaxation area as well as a heated outdoor pool with a terrace offering a magnificent, panoramic view of Mont-Vorassay, the Aiguille de Bionnassay, Armancette glacier and the Domes de Miage.

Located on the site of the village bakery, The Armancette is keeping the tradition alive with their on-site bakery serving golden pastries, an array of mouth-watering cakes and fresh bread daily. The smell of warm bread fills the ground floor each morning and is so enticing. I challenge anyone to walk by and not come away with some delicious tasty treat. The hotel restaurant, La Table d’Armante is modern yet cosy with an extensive menu offering fresh, local, seasonal dishes. There’s also a great choice when it comes to breakfast, so you can fuel up with one of their speciality juices or scrumptious omelettes before hitting the slopes.

20 minutes from Saint-Gervais and you’re in Chamonix, ski heaven! With plenty of ski runs this is the perfect place for any seasoned skier.

Catering for all budgets is La Folie Douce. Synonymous with après-ski partying and situated in the centre of Chamonix, this funky hotel has fantastic ski-in, ski-out access to the Brevent and Flegere ski areas.

What was once the historical palace of Le Savoy is now a chic, opulent, insta-worthy place to stay. The carpets depict life-sized synchronized swimmers, ice skating boots hang from the walls and there’s the odd mannequin and telephone booth scattered around the place.

The vibe is cool and eclectic. They’ve successfully nailed the trendy industrial look with exposed brick work juxtaposed elegant plush velvets and statement lighting giving the place a chic air. The hotel has 250 rooms, including premium (four star), access (three star) and dormitory rooms (three star), offering cheaper accommodation for groups. The premium rooms have views of the mountains and that quirky, luxury feel that runs through the whole hotel.

This is the après-ski party palace, with three restaurants, a main bar upstairs with a vast cocktail menu and for those looking for some fun and live entertainment, there’s the basement bar where you’ll find people dancing on the tables alongside the cabaret performers and DJs.

If you don’t feel like partying and want to rest your ski-weary legs then you can try out the yoga and spa. Here you can soak up glorious views of the Alps from the heated outdoor pool, take in a treatment or relax in the sauna and steam room.

Whatever you are looking for in a ski holiday, La Folie Douce caters for everything and everyone and is bound to be a hit with the ski crowd this winter.
