London has no shortage of hotels, but few capture the city’s musical soul quite like Chateau Denmark. Nestled on the iconic Denmark Street in the heart of Soho, this decadent hideaway pulses with rock ’n’ roll energy, maximalist design, and a legendary sense of history.

From sculptural interiors to curated playlists, it’s a hotel built for anyone who wants to live like a rock star – and our Music Editor Emma Harrison checks in to explore its individually designed apartments, decadent bars, and immersive atmosphere that make this one of London’s most audacious stays.

Chateau Denmark – the ultimate rock ‘n roll hideaway

‘It’s only rock ’n’ roll (but I like it)’ sang the mighty Rolling Stones – and nowhere embodies that sentiment quite like Chateau Denmark. Set on the legendary Denmark Street in the heart of Soho, this outrageously glamorous hideaway is the place to check in for anyone harbouring rock ’n’ roll fantasies, past or present.

Often dubbed London’s Tin Pan Alley, Denmark Street has long been the city’s musical epicentre. Throughout the 20th century, it served as a crucible for creativity, rebellion, and sonic innovation – a legacy that Chateau Denmark wears loudly and proudly throughout its decor and attitude. While today the street’s celebrated guitar shops still hum with musical pedigree, this short, 100-yard stretch once stood at the very nerve centre of British music history.

The history behind Chateau Denmark and Denmark Street

Step just outside the hotel and you’ll find some of London’s coolest guitar emporiums – No.Tom Guitars, Sixty Sixty Sounds, and Hank’s Guitar Shop, all of which are magnificently still flying the flag for the street’s storied past.

Despite its modest length, Denmark Street was the beating heart of London’s music scene from the 1960s onwards, hosting recording studios where The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Kinks, and The Sex Pistols laid down tracks that would change music and, indeed, the world forever. The heritage is nothing short of awe-inspiring. David Bowie – then still David Jones – once lived here in a converted ambulance parked outside La Giaconda café at number 9 with this hallowed space now home to Chateau Denmark’s Townhouse Apartments.

Number 4 was the home of the recording studio Regent Sounds, where The Rolling Stones recorded their eponymous debut album. The tiny but mighty studio also hosted an invariable smorgasbord of rock legends such as Bowie, The Who, Elton John, The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Even Sir Paul McCartney recorded ‘Fixing a Hole’ from ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ at Regent Sounds thus cementing Denmark Street’s cultural significance not just musically, but stylistically too.

It wasn’t only musicians who shaped the street’s legacy. NME (then New Musical Express) operated from number 5, while number 6 housed the legendary design studio Hipgnosis, who were responsible for iconic album artwork for Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, T. Rex, and more.

Rock star vibes

Against this backdrop, Chateau Denmark feels less like a hotel and more like a natural continuation of Soho’s rebellious, creative lineage. This is not a traditional hotel in any sense – and that’s entirely the point. –

While there is a central reception desk staffed by friendly, impeccably styled hosts, that’s where convention ends. Guests stay in one of 16 individually designed apartments scattered across historic buildings along Denmark Street, each one a gloriously indulgent mini-suite designed for excess.

Guests have full access to a butler or as Chateau Denmark call them, BTLR’s, who you can contact via the app or What’s App for any query or request – big or small.

The sushi ranks among the best I’ve tasted outside Tokyo, while the cocktails are bold, inventive, and perfectly matched to the bar’s rock-star rhythm. It’s a place where the party starts the moment you walk in – and never quite stops.
