Digital nomads, free-spirited surfers, and travellers flock to Bali to chase the island’s vibrant sunsets, chilled out lifestyle, and crashing waves. Canggu has become one of Bali’s most sought-after areas, bustling with aesthetic brunch cafes, gyms, beach clubs, and bohemian boutique stores. A short stroll from Batu Bolong, Canggu’s most iconic surf beach, lies Chesa Canggu.
Recently opened in 2023, this 36-room boutique hotel is designed for a new generation of travellers, those who value luxury, individuality, and a place with character and charm. Travel Writer, Sally Seaton, had the pleasure of experiencing Chesa Canggu’s modern aesthetic and Balinese charm.

Minimal aesthetic with Balinese Charm
Stepping inside Chesa Canggu is like entering a calm oasis. As I arrived, I received a warm welcome and immediately felt at peace surrounded by an interior that embraced natural textures, soothing tones, and clean lines. Although this hotel mirrored the modernity of Canggu, it also reflected the island’s history and charm, with the Chesa Canggu team wearing pakaian adat Bali, the traditional dress that includes sarongs, sashes, and, for men, the ceremonial udeng headcloth.
The luxury rooms at Chesa Canggu offer stylish comfort. The Tropical Poolside Rooms, spread across two storeys, include a spacious bedroom with a plush king-size bed, a cosy day bed for lounging, and a private terrace or balcony overlooking the crystal-clear swimming pool, on both sides of the hotel.
On arrival, the bed was adorned with delicate towel art and scattered rose petals, a thoughtful gesture that was very welcoming. Each morning, natural light filtered through the sheer curtains, and evenings ended with watching the sky turn into a pastel painting of vibrant colours from my private terrace.

A Tropical Oasis at the Heart of Chesa Canggu
At the heart of the property, two 18-metre pools rippled beneath tropical canopies. One sits in the sunshine, framed by oversized loungers and birdcage-style cabanas, while the other is tucked into a quieter courtyard for guests who prefer seclusion. The hotel provides a choice for a social vibe or retreat into the calm.
There’s a pool bar for fresh juices or evening cocktails, and gourmet bites are always on hand to keep energy levels up between swims. Whether you’re a sun-chaser, a nap-in-the-shade type, or someone who loves an afternoon dip, the pools are the centrepiece of life at Chesa Canggu.
My favourite time of day during my stay at Chesa Canggu was spending slow afternoons beside the peaceful pool in the quiet courtyard, often having the full place to myself, which felt like my own private haven.

Global Dining at THARA Kitchen & Bar
While Canggu is brimming with cool cafes and western restaurants, the dining at Chesa Canggu was truly beautiful. THARA Kitchen & Bar, the hotel’s signature restaurant, sets the tone with its chic take on casual fine dining. Open to both guests and locals, it has quickly carved out a place in Canggu’s vibrant dining scene.
By morning, I enjoyed colourful smoothie bowls, and for dinner, I indulged in beef ragout, cooked to perfection with a fine beef brisket. Throughout the day, guests can enjoy light bites by the pool, refreshing cocktails, and dishes that blend local inspiration with global comfort food.

Upstairs, The Lounge offers a more intimate setting, with comfortable sofas and low lighting, making it the ideal coworking space. Snacks and refreshments are flowing here from 2 pm to 5 pm, allowing guests to work in comfort and relaxation with snacks to keep them fuelled.
THARA Kitchen & Bar also offer afternoon tea, which is reimagined with sparkling infusions and coffee sourced from Bali’s own Expat Roasters. It’s a magical experience for couples or friends marking a special occasion.

The Perfect Base for Canggu
Chesa Canggu’s location is one of its biggest draws. Just a short stroll from Batu Bolong Beach, it offers easy access to one of Bali’s most famous surf spots. I visited here, soaking up the sun while watching surfers carving through the waves. The beach soon became a gathering point for travellers watching the sun dip into the horizon.
Step outside of the boutique hotel and you’re in the thick of Canggu’s modern cafe scene, with brunch spots, boutique stores, and beach clubs just a minute away. Yet once you step back inside Chesa Canggu’s grounds, the chaos fades into tranquillity. It provides the best of both worlds, close to the lively scene, but never overwhelmed by it.
Chesa Canggu’s location also makes it a great base to explore more of Bali’s natural beauty. From here, island-hopping to the quieter charms of Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida is within easy reach.

Bali is full of boutique hotels, but not all of them manage to balance comfort, luxury, and authenticity as gracefully as Chesa Canggu. It’s a modern stay without losing its Balinese roots, and provides the best of social and relaxation.
I recharged and relaxed during my stay at Chesa Canggu, indulging in comfort and tranquillity. Whether you arrive with a surfboard, a laptop, or lusting after sunsets, Chesa Canggu offers an experience that feels effortlessly chic and deeply personal.
