Chinese New Year at Hakkasan

Here at House of Coco we love any excuse to eat Chinese food, especially when it’s to celebrate Chinese New Year and the Year of the Monkey. Our Lifestyle Writer, Helena, went to sample Hakkasan Hanway Place’s Chinese New Year Menu…

Hakkasan restaurants around the world will continue to honour the Chinese wishing tree tradition inspired by the Lam Tsuen Wishing Trees in Hong Kong. #TeamCoco were invited to come and share our hopes for the coming year, writing them on gold ribbons and hanging them in spots within the restaurant. The wish collection and special Chinese New Year menu is available now until the 22nd February.


Upon arrival we were greeted with a cocktail inspired by the Year of the Monkey, the 9 Hou cocktail comprising of nine components representing the monkey’s ninth position on the zodiac. With a taste of Eldorado 3yrs rum, sherry, banana liqueur and guava, and decorated with a golden monkey cocktail stirrer, so cute & the perfect keepsake for good luck. The cocktail was tasty, fruity and a perfect start to the meal.

The menu showcases dishes that will bring joy, luck and prosperity in 2016. Starting off with double boiled fresh Ginseng and chicken soup followed by Diced wagyu beef with pine nut in a golden cup, which was unbelievably fresh, crispy and more than tasty, and a Dim sum platter that included crab meat, duck and scallop shumai.

The main course quickly followed with wok-fry lobster in spicy truffle sauce, PiPa duck, grilled Chilean sea bass in honey, a Hericium mushroom stir-fry with lotus root, asparagus, and lily bulb in black pepper and dried scallop & crab meat fried rice. Without even being the biggest fan of sea-food it was impossible to not try everything, it all looked amazing and tasted even better. The crispy roasted Pipa duck had an extra crispiness to the skin, aromatic taste and served with Hoi Sin sauce and was one the favourites on the menu followed closely by the sea bass, which had a delicious honey glaze and cooked to utter mouth watering perfection.

To complete the menu was the Golden halo dessert, a banana and peanut cake and a five spice infused cream, caramel, chocolate and peanut topped with gold leaf. Sparkling in gold, it’s #foodporn worthy and you just have to take a minute for a photo op. The chocolate globe when cracked open has a chocolate mousse/soup that flows effortlessly out and coats the peanut cake. Each ingredient faultlessly complimenting one other.


Hakkasan will provide entertainment believed to bring good luck and fortune in the form of a Chinese lion dance. This will be performed on Thursday 11th Feb at Hakkasan Hanway Place and Friday 12th Feb at Hakkasan Mayfair.
