Coco Business Inspiration : 38°N

At 38°N they pride themselves on their team of leading experts, each with a wealth of experience in their respective fields. They want you to experience the best in exercise, activities and therapies so they’ve assembled an exceptional team that truly walk their talk.

They all LOVE what they do which translates into a truly unique experience, full of fun, knowledge, support and enthusiasm. Here at House of Coco we were intrigued by their work so we went along to found out more. We spoke to husband and wife duo, and founders, Claire and James to find out more…

When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
It was 2012 and 38°N was born from a desire to live a life that we love – and help others to do the same. The corporate world of London always seemed so repetitive and claustrophobic and Ibiza has always been a very special place.

38°N was created to help people escape, reset and gain control over their health and wellness. We attract professionals and senior execs who live stressful lives – so it’s an opportunity to transform not only their body, but their mind – giving them knowledge and confidence to sustain it when they return home.

What’s your background?
Claire: I worked in PR and Business Coaching for 14 years in London

James: My background is media in London – starting as a journalist for Ministry of Sound and then working on digital content. I was there for about 16 years.

How many people are involved in the company and what are their roles?
We have a core team of about six people based here in Ibiza. From PT’s, yoga and Pilates

Instructors, to Nutritional Therapists and then we pull in extra help as and when we need it.

If you could start over with the business, would you do anything differently?
Not really. We feel that everything we’ve done – the good and bad – has led us to this place. And we are really happy with where it’s all going. We don’t believe in regrets!

What is the hardest challenge you have faced since you started the company?
The seasonality of Ibiza – business in Summer is great, but Winter can be tough. That’s why at the end of last year, we started running “Winter Sun’ retreats at the 5* Puente Romano Resort in Marbella.  We’ve also started planning other business ventures aren’t dependent on seasonality.

Tell us one fact about you that people wouldn’t know?
That neither of us are genetically ‘slim’. We both struggled with weight gain and unhealthy body images in our twenties and we have to put in the effort to stay fit and strong. But the difference is, now it’s a way of life and we love training together in fast, effective ways.

2017 is here, where do you plan on taking the brand?
We have big, big plans for the brand and are focusing our energy on offering very personalized mind and body transformations. The people we attract has changed over the years and we’re excited to look at how we adapt to that. It’ll definitely be more about the entire journey rather than just retreats.

To date, what has been the highlight since launching?
Just the energy surrounding the business in the last 6 months or so. We have developed a great program for clients – whether it’s a long weekend, six night stay or Bespoke. Clients are getting great results and leaving us feeling reset, rebalanced and energized – in their body and mind. Also working with Puente Romano in Marbella really shifted things for the business during the winter.

Which city do you feel most at home in, London, Paris or New York?
London without a doubt. We got married there in February! Barcelona also has a special place in our hearts – we had our first date there!

Three beauty products you can’t leave the house without?
Claire: MAC lipgloss, dry shampoo for making me feel a little more presentable after a sweaty session. Body spray – for the same reason as the dry shampoo!

James: No beauty products! Just protein powder, a shaker and a towel!

Style means….?
Claire: Being confident in your skin. Wearing something well – whatever it is – because you feel good in it. I probably feel my sexiest in denim shorts and a t-shirt!

James: Agree with Claire. My style is quite preppy I’d say!

Best thing about London to you?
The culture. The architecture. The restaurants. The culture. Everything really. Although not the tube!

Statement shoe or statement bag?
Claire: Shoes

James: Not really a handbag person, so shoes!

If you had to, what piece of clothing from your wardrobe would you wear everyday?
Claire: My red maxi dress that James bought for me from a boutique in Formentera

James:  Battered, comfy old pair of cargo shorts

Favourite love song?
Ours is the same – Someone Like You by Van Morrison. We had it played at our wedding.

Best place for a coffee?
We both love a little coffee shop called Granarium on the harbor near Santa Eulalia, Ibiza where we live. It’s run by a lovely Italian man who also bakes fresh cakes every day!

Most memorable piece of advice given to you?
Claire: Time heals. James and I have had some tough times before meeting each other. Some things are so painful, you think you’ll never recover. But in time, if you have the courage to let go of the pain and bitterness, the light takes place of the darkness.

James: To be brave. When I’m faced with a decision, I always look at whether I’m making the choice out of love or fear. Being brave is choosing what love would do. It opens you up, rather than closes you down.

Guilty pleasure?
We love a bit of Made in Chelsea! It’s easy watching and reminds of us of home!

If you could spent 24 hours in anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Formentera. We have a little hut we go to in the pine trees – it’s super basic but it’s a stone’s throw from the beach and a great restaurant that does amazing paella (and sangria!) Even just a day spent there feels like a week – it’s so relaxing and wild.

In future, how do you plan on expanding the company?
For us it’s about after care. Offering clients a way to stay on track after they’ve left us. Sp watch this space!
