The founder of Blck Flag spent days and years in the wrong underwear. As a former football player & racing skier with quite strong legs he traveled from competition to competition without his underwear riding up, pinching and sagging all the time. Instead of waiting and hoping for a brand to recognise these kind of problems he created everything by himself.
Here, he talks to us at House of Coco to tell us more…
When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
I launched Blck Flag on May 1st in 2016 with a small event in Zurich, Switzerland. The main reason behind Blck Flag was the fact that I have strong legs and quite enough ass and never found any underwear which fits great – so I made my own. The name represents the story of a fighter, someone who believes in the fact that you can do everything you want in life and really succeed if you have a great heart and ambition. It’s pretty much the difference of waving the white flag, which means you are giving up. We are born to fight for our dreams and goals!
Whats your background?
My background is quite big at my young age. I started to work at a sports retail store in the age of 15 and have always been doing semi-professional sports (ski-racing & American football). I have been starting to sell US-sports goods in the age of 19, switched up managing nightclubs for almost four years and never lost the passion for fashion and extraordinary things. I have always been fascinated about the fast life and meeting a whole bunch of different people from all over the world. Ever since I just did what I truly believe in.
How many people are involved in the company and what are their roles?
I set up the whole company by myself. I had the whole concept on my mind, measured the undies and thought about the perfect fit, I had the ideas about these unique product boxes, did the whole production process, went to a lot fashion & fabric fairs all over the world to find the right partners and finally dropped the Premier Collection. I do have an investment partner, but he’s not responsible for any kind of actions. He’s making sure that I can afford all these amazing happenings.
If you could start over with the business, would you do anything differently?
I guess I don’t. Every mistake is a lesson and you need to grow with them. In my opinion it is important to fail at a certain process to make it better the next time and to keep yourself and especially your mind focused to overthink certain steps in the future.
What is the hardest challenge you have faced since you started the company?
I think it is hard to get the attention of any men, especially if it goes about underwear. Also because of our special long cut a lot of men we are talking to are still not familiar with that shape. They argue without knowing how good they really feel. But as soon as someone falls in love with our products, he orders more colors straight away. That’s why we don’t want to sell online – you need to get a feeling of our product, its quality and especially the way it’s set up. We can proudly promise that every men will fall in love with them.
Tell us one fact about you that people wouldn’t know?
I get bored superfast and I hate jealousy a lot. Swiss people are quite difficult to live and work with, so I need to constantly keep moving.
2016 is here, where do you plan on taking the brand?
I am focused on getting Blck Flag into some of the best stores/boutiques in the UK, Netherlands, US, Germany and France. I believe that these countries have an incredible great taste of fashion and the extraordinary things in life.
To date, what has been the highlight since launching?
All of the amazing feedbacks we get. And yeah, we have got a big order of someone in Nigeria – that was unexpected and just feels absolutely amazing.
Which city do you feel most at home in London, Paris or New York?
I would say Los Angeles, if you would have that on your list. I am kidding, I am just in love with the US, so I have to stick with New York.
Three beauty products you can’t leave the house without?
I could never leave the house without my watch, bracelet and especially my sunglasses.
Style means …?
To express yourself and to speak a language everyone understands without even saying a word.
Best thing about London to you?
Hyde Park! I am absolutely in love with this place.
Statement shoe or statement bag?
Shoe! In my opinion the most important accessory, no matter if you are a men or a women. I have always been addicted to sneakers and will ever be.
If you had to, what piece of clothing from your wardrobe would you wear everyday?
A white or black tee is pretty much all I need and I wear them everyday.
Favourite love song?
There are so many, but I love ‘So Beautiful’ or ‘Just Friends’ from Musiq Soulchild.
Best place for a coffee?
I have been to so many awesome places, but I guess the most amazing one has been Paradise Cove in Malibu, Los Angeles. It’s an absolutely incredible place, especially early in the morning.
Most memorable piece of advice given to you?
Treat everyone the same you want to get treatened by yourself, always stay humble, polite and goodminded, never forget the ones who have not forgotten you and always stay true to yourself no matter what happens.
I spend way too much money on clothes and sneakers and I am totally addicted to the nightlife.
If you could spent 24 hours in anywhere in the world, where would it be?
I would honestly rather bring all the poor, hungry and handicaped people to a mindblowing island somewhere far from all the bad in this world and have them having the most amazing day of their life without any limitations – 5* treatment, food and fun for at least 24h.
In future, how do you plan on expanding the company?
As I feel great in building brands, ideas and products I want to keep focusing on that. I am also extremely good in networking, but I somehow don’t feel comfortable in selling anymore. I need to find the right ones around me, who believe in Blck Flag the same way and totally start to killing the game. I have a whole lot of amazing ideas on my mind already – there will be a lot of things happening in 2016/17.
