Tatiana Puglisi is a #Girlboss on a mission, one that takes the negative situations that life throws at her and makes something positive out of it. Over the years cosmetics became her main interest and she began studying how to formulate appropriate products to resolve her problems with sensitive skin. After many years and after graduating, she gained enough experience and knowledge, and she decided not to continue studies in Art History but to begin working on Di Blasi Cosmetics.
Here, she chats to us at House of Coco and tells us more about her journey…
When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
It has been on the market for less than one year, but I unwittingly laid the foundations of the brand in 2009, while my mother was undergoing treatment for cancer which thankfully was effective. That traumatic event revolutionised my attitude first to food and then to cosmetics.
What’s your background?
I graduated in History of Art and the ceramic holders that I have created, pairing perfectly with my beauty products, underline my love for art. The same applies for the creativity that I put in when I wrap the cosmetics inside the box. A packaging that my customers and bloggers adore!
In addition over the years I have been studying cosmetics as well and how to formulate appropriate products to resolve my problems with sensitive skin.
Your products contain special ingredients. How did you come to think of combining these ingredients?
With my brand I wanted to highlight some Sicilian raw materials, such as lava rock from Mt Etna, prickly pear juice pads or manna, that are amazing but not well-known on the beauty market. The lab with which I make the products follows my same idea and together we enhanced the cosmetic formulas with these excellent ingredients.
What’s the story behind your packaging holders in white ceramics?
Well, when I purchased beauty products and spent a lot of money, ordinary boxes or no packaging did not satisfy me. I wanted to find something original, I wanted to choose a packaging that I could then reuse in some other way. My degree in History of Art and my deep sense of aesthetics led me to create an artistic holder that is my response to the demand for more sustainable packaging options. After months of evaluating different materials to find the most appropriate with which to create an elegant, light, useful object, the choice fell on white pottery. More refined than classic terracotta, it is hand moulded by skilled artisans and the result is a beautifully designed holder that represents an added value for my brand.
How did you choose your company name?
Di Blasi is my mother’s maiden name. It’s in homage to her! There is something very personal in my brand. My mother helps me very much and gives me a lot of advice, especially when I develop the aesthetics of a product.
If you could start over with the business, would you do anything differently?
Not really. I am following a path and I am learning a lot, even from negative experiences. I am sure that if I had had the knowledge that I have got now, I would have avoided some little mistakes.
What is the hardest challenge you have faced since you started the company?
When you start a business everything is a challenge. Two important words in a small company are “compromise” and “creativity”. You have to choose the best quality at the best price, and the creativity is often useful to save money and do something original and beautiful.
Tell us one fact about you that people wouldn’t know?
Many years ago I wanted to apply for a job in the fashion industry.
2016 is here, where do you plan on taking the brand?
I would like to see my products in the houses of more customers and on the shelves of many retailers.
To date, what has been the highlight since launching?
The approval of many customers and bloggers. I love the fact that thanks to this job I can meet many interesting people to share what I am doing.
Which city do you feel most at home in, London, Paris or New York?
I have a special feeling for Paris every time I visit this gorgeous city. Hopefully I will get the chance soon to visit London or New York, maybe for work.
Three beauty products you can’t leave the house without?
My cleansing and moisturising products are a must! Mineral foundation powder, black eye pencil and red lipstick.
Style is the expression of every person.
Best thing about London to you?
Based on what other people told me, London is a city where you have the possibility to achieve your project.
Statement shoe or statement bag?
My statement bag is an orange leather satchel by Valentino. Perfect for a summery outfit!
If you had to, what piece of clothing from your wardrobe would you wear every day?
My floral print dress that I love wearing in the summer.
Favourite love song?
I love Adele’s songs, especially “Hello”.
Best place for a coffee?
In Italy most places serve good coffee.
Most memorable piece of advice given to you?
Never give up!
A glass of good wine.
If you could spend 24 hours anywhere in the world, where would it be?
On a terrace, watching the sea breaking against the lava rocks on Pantelleria Island.
