Coco Business Inspiration : Nilah

More than a seamstress, designer and tailor, Nilah is a bridal expert. With over 28 years in business, she understands brides and their desires.  Ever since she was very young, she has always had a love of fashion. Her passion and skills have been shaped over the years by the finest of tailors (including a man who was the personal tailor to a five-star general).  It is with that experience and that she and her staff brings to each and every bride a deep rooted commitment to excellence.  She says she loves her brides and it truly shows in the time and detail that she takes with everything she does for them.

A true #Girlboss, Nilah tells us more…

When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
I have been in business for over 28 years.  I started this company because ever since I was a little girl I loved sewing and designing and creating.  This industry is ever changing and I love that aspect of it.  I started this company for me to be able to do what I love and get to be a part of making someone’s wedding day perfect.

What is your background?
I have been sewing ever since I was 4 or 5 years old.  I got my first sewing machine when I was ten years old.  When I got a little older I began to study under the finest Italian and Portuguese tailors.  I have always loved what I do and being in the business you are constantly being challenged with new things.   Experience though mentoring and experience though doing has always been my background and will always be how I keep moving forward.

If you could start over with the business, would you do anything differently?
No I wouldn’t.  Everything I have done and all the lessons I have learned, good and bad, have brought me to wear I am today.  I always allow myself to learn from my past but I never regret what I have done because if I hadn’t I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Tell us one fact about you that people wouldn’t know…
I have a bigger sense of humor than people think.  People always think I’m a very reserved person but it really just depends who I’m around.  Give me a good group of people to joke with and we can laugh all night.

To date what has been the highlight since launching?
There really hasn’t been one highlight.  Because every day there is some new challenge or some new change I am always excited by my work.  There’s no one highlight because there are so many things I have loved.

Favourite love song?
I honestly don’t have just one.  I have such a broad taste in music that I could never pick.   From Ed Sheeran to Andrea Bocelli to big band music I love it all.  What can I say, I’m a hopeless romantic no matter who’s singing to me.

Most memorable piece of advice given to you?
Its advice that is on my mother’s kitchen trivets that I hang in my shop.   The one trivet reads: Four things a woman should know, how to look like a girl, how to act like a lady, how to think like a man and how to work like a dog.   The second trivet reads; Don’t worry if you work hard and the rewards are few, Remember! The mighty oak tree was once a nut like you.     I love this not only because it was my mother’s but because I have tried to live by this advice and it has paid off.

Guilty Pleasure?
Dark Chocolate.

If you could spend 24 hours in anywhere in the world, where would it be?
I would love to go back to either Italy or Paris.  I have been to both and loved them both.

In the future how do you plan on expanding the company?
By continuing to move forward with the same consistency we have been moving at for years.   Advancing the business is about the slow but steady process forward.  We always are striving for excellence and to continue to be open to the changes that will come.
