Here, we talked to Chief Rocker Charlie to find out more…

When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
I launched Rockbox just over a year ago although it was a few years in the planning. The initial inspiration came in 2012 when Mr.Rocker and I moved to Singapore. Whilst this was the most excellent adventure it was very far from our favourite people and their celebrations. Maintaining connections became even more important and I wanted to still send beautiful gifts that felt like I had chosen and sent them myself rather than something generic and impersonal. I struggled to find something that really hit the mark and the idea for Rockbox started to form.

Home in the UK in 2014 Mini Rocker was born adding a dose of (fabulous!) chaos. Time became precious and gift giving became a last-minute rush or, more often than not, totally forgotten. What I needed was a stylish yet effortless gifting solution and the idea behind Rockbox gained strength. In 2016 I was able to put my ideas into reality and I haven’t looked back since!

Whats your background?
Before Rockbox my career has mainly been in aviation and I am bit of a secret plane geek! Being in aviation has given me the opportunity to travel to some amazing places and work with some inspirational people. I studied Psychology at University and have a Masters in Occcupational Psychology but started working for an airline whilst I was studying and decided that this was the path I wanted my career to take. I love the buzz of being in an airport and the general feeling of happiness as people get excited about holidays, new adventures and new opportunities. I have always loved the opening scene to ‘Love Actually’ where Hugh Grant talks about the arrival gate at Heathrow airport and the sense of love being all around – that’s exactly how I see it!

How many people are involved in the company and what are their roles?
As Chief Rocker I am the main person behind the brand – I work on product sourcing, marketing, curating new boxes and driving our social media presence. I do have a small team of people who help me to pack and send the Rockboxes and also to help with some of the administration tasks that I don’t always get the time to do.

If you could start over with the business, would you do anything differently?
I wouldn’t change anything. I have learnt so much and made mistakes along the way but they have all been part of the Rockbox journey and every step has contributed to the creation of the brand.

What is the hardest challenge you have faced since you started the company?
Being a mum to a young toddler and running your own business can be really challenging and it has been much harder than I antipcated to keep on top of everything. We were also very overwhelmed by the Christmas demand and were totally unprepared for how much work and coordination was involved. However the huge positive to come from this is that we very quickly learned what we need to do to support a peak rush and have put processes in place to help us in the future.

Tell us one fact about you that people wouldn’t know?
Every Friday morning, before I start the day, I put on The Cure ‘Friday Im in Love’ and dance around the bedroom! I have done this since my University days and it a great way to kick start that Friday feeling!

2017 is here, where do you plan on taking the brand?
The current focus for Rockbox is to expand our collection to offer corporate and event gifts. We worked with several corporate clients for Christmas gifts and received fantastic feedback about our products and luxury quality so we want to expand on this. One of the things that I love the most is working on new Rockboxes and sourcing new products and it has been great fun working on these new options.

We also get a lot of requests for Rockboxes that are more suited to children and teenagers so we are considering options for Mini Rocker and Teen Rocker specific gifts.

To date, what has been the highlight since launching?
Receiving my first repeat order was a huge highlight. It’s a simple thing but knowing that someone liked what they had ordered the first time enough to order again felt really good. I also attended a charity event recently and I overheard someone that I didn’t know and had never met before talking about Rockbox and how much they loved the concept and brand – it was really surreal to hear someone talking about the brand that I have created in such a positive way.

Which city do you feel most at home in, London, Paris or New York?
London will always be home! I have been lucky to travel a lot however nothing beats the feeling of landing back into London and getting that strong sense of being where you belong.

Three beauty products you can’t leave the house without?
My Clinique Dramatically Different Lotion,my Lucky Cloud Coconut Lip Butter and a bottle of Bio Oil.

Style means….?
Being comfortable and keeping it simple. Knowing what looks good on and dressing for your shape is really important. Always wear fabulous shoes and make sure you have brushed your hair…..

Best thing about London to you?
The vibe and the people. I love sitting in a bar or a café and just watching the world go by

Statement shoe or statement bag?
Statement shoe! Shoes are one of the greatest ever inventions….

If you had to, what piece of clothing from your wardrobe would you wear everyday?
When at home I live in my pyjamas – normally the Mama collection by The Bright Company.

Favourite love song?
‘Dream Catch Me’ by Newton Faulkner. Mr.Rocker and I danced to this at our wedding and we have the three words engraved inside our wedding rings.

Best place for a coffee?
I am not a coffee fan – but give me a great cup of English Breakfast Tea and I will be a very happy lady.

Most memorable piece of advice given to you?
Try to outsource anything that you are not good at and focus on the things that you do really well – asking for help is not a sign of failure.

Guilty pleasure?
Binge watching ‘Sex and the City’ whilst eating carrot cake in my pyjamas!

If you could spent 24 hours in anywhere in the world, where would it be?
When we lived in Singapore Mr.Rocker and I discovered Nikoi Island, a small private island 50miles off the Singapore coast. It is one of the most idillyic and peaceful places we have ever been – the kind of place where you can shut out the world and just reconnect.

In future, how do you plan on expanding the company?
I have so many plans to expand the company and the Rockbox brand however as a young and new brand the current focus is to strengthen what we currently offer and become the go to gift company….and then we can focus on world domination!
