Creative Spotlight : True Style Lab

Terumi Ohta is a self-taught needle felt artist who’s work has caught our attention here at House of Coco.

Here she tells us more…

When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?

I have loved art and creating things since I was a child. When I found needle felting in 2012, I felt this is the best field for my ability and in 2013, I started needle felting as business under the TrueStyleLab. brand.

Whats your background?

I grew up surrounded by nature, flowers and animals. My interest in drawing began at an early age. My father loved gardening and I helped him often when I was a child. The experience and memory made me learn flower skills later. I have trained in both conventional flower arranging and Ikebana style.

How many people are involved in the company and what are their roles?

This brand is only my work at the moment. I make all my creations on my own. In other fields, such as design ( Web and adverts etc. ) and management, I rely on my business partners. Also I’ve just started to train a few assistants.

If you could start over with the business, would you do anything differently?

It has been only one year or so since I launched this brand and I think it’s going really well.. So far I am satisfied… I always want more though.

What is the hardest challenge you have faced since you started the company?

When I exhibited at “CRAFT” in London half of creations sent from Tokyo were not delivered before the show. ( or even during the show ) fortunately I was able to put on a good show despite this setback… it’s always good to know that you can achieve, even under bad circumstances.

Tell us one fact about you that people wouldn’t know?

I can’t touch insects and frogs although I make them as my creations.

2015 is here, where do you plan on taking the brand?

I am based in Tokyo but, I want to get more known in the UK also.

To date, what has been the highlight since launching?

When I was introduced on TV (Japan), but when I got the offer by Coco Loves to tell you about myself…well… hard to choose.

In future, how do you plan on expanding the company?

I am aiming give workshops or master classes, develop students and secure skilled assistants as my brand’s artists. The assistants would make my designs into reality. Also they can be assistant teachers at my workshops. I will also be producing unique kits, hopefully in partnership with some English wool manufacturers.
