Designer Spotlight : Cadby and Co

Cadby & Co are a new London based family business that specialises in using old cut diamonds and fine gem stones. Deborah Cadby’s designs and skills in making are combined with Jeff’s many years of dealing in antique jewellery, diamonds and gem stones.

Here, Deborah talks to us at House of Coco and tells us more about her plans for the future, her personal style and where she feels most at home…

When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
Cadby and Co by Deborah Cadby was launched in the autumn of 2014 at the prestigious Goldsmiths Fair. Our idea came to join together my skills in many years goldsmithing and my fathers knowledge of antique jewellery. Our joint love for beautiful antique hand cut stones was the center of our collaboration. We saw a gap in the market place for people like me who wanted a simple elegant understated engagement rings. So I designed a collection of elegant rings to hold the beautiful stones. I was inspired by the warm tones and the soft edges of ancient rings and this became the base for my designs.

What’s your background?
Art was always my favorite subject at school so I was very happy when I was accepted to Chelsea Arts Col-lege. This is where I found out I had an urge to make small things. I chose to specialize in 3D design. Maybe all the years of looking through my dad’s jewellery books had influenced me.

I went on to Sir John Cass to study a Degree in Jewellery,Silversmithing and Allied Crafts.

Before my course had ended I was very lucky to get a work placement with Wendy Ramshaw OBE and Wendy offered me a permanent job as workshop assistant when I finished my degree.

What is the hardest challenge you have faced since you started the company?
For me I love working on the workbench, but with each piece there is paperwork to do and the business side of applying for exhibitions and promotional work as well as the other overheads too. It is not something I find easy. Luckily I have a brilliant husband, who is a photographer, designed and photographed all my work for the website and runs the business side of things.

2015 is here, where do you plan on taking the brand?
Everywhere!..I need to find places to exhibit, in galleries, exhibitions, in stores – places where people can see my work.

To date, what has been the highlight since launching?
It’s always a great feeling when someone received their piece. I particularly feel this when it’s an engagement ring or wedding rings. Knowing what it means to those people and the fact they will be wearing and looking at this piece for such a long time as the symbol of their love.

Which city do you feel most at home in, London, Paris or New York?
London, as it is home.
