Designer Spotlight : CCUOCO

For the Woman who knows exactly what she wants and knows exactly where she is going. Not for the faint at heart. Captivating the fierce through my own interpretation with garments while paying great attention to each piece that is constructed, not only putting forth physical effort but mental and emotional as well. Letting Fashion be the catalyst for the woman ready to conquer her world – These powerful words are from the lady behind CCUOCO, a fashion brand that we cannot get enough of here at House of Coco.

We went along to find out more…

When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
CCUOCO was officially launched two years ago but it has been an idea and belief long before the company was ever born.

What’s your background?
My childhood was a hard and fast lesson life handed me. One that has molded me into the strong woman I am today. I gave birth to a very perfect angel when I was 17 but having a child at an early age only made me more focused than I could have ever been at that age.

I studied at FIDM & The Academy of Art University and majored in Fashion Design.

The driving force inside of me comes from my children. They are the light in my soul I never knew I had.

I specialise in leather and have a very personal relationship with it for all the qualities it embodies; strength, how sexy it can be, the smell of it, the body and shape it holds but most of all the longevity of a leather piece. Much like a lover, treat it well enough and it can last a lifetime.

I have only truly been in love once and despite my greatest efforts it changed who I was as a woman massively.

Winning Best Emerging Designer in San Francisco two years ago, I launched CCUOCO in London and am now a current contestant on Americas hit TV Series Project Runway, Season 14.

What is the hardest challenge you have faced since you started the company?
I wouldn’t say that my company has been challenging. Life for me growing up wasn’t the best and CCUOCO has been my freedom. Yes, there are day-to-day challenges but my label is where I run to feel alive inside.

I also have a very intelligent business partner, he handles business and I handle fashion. I would say in the beginning that was the most challenging aspect is trying to run both the business of fashion and FASHION. You need a right hand man, or woman. Someone you can bounce ideas off of, someone who can handle everything you cannot, someone you can rely on. Without this, it’s nearly impossible.

2015 is here, where do you plan on taking the brand?
Well, for me, I’m already into 2016 and thinking about where I will take the label. Project Runway was an absolute blessing from 2015 that was not planned at all but has launched the brand in the direction I already knew it was going to go in, it has just taken me there that much faster. Goals for the company include having CCUOCO in boutiques in all major cities available for clients to shop.

To date, what has been the highlight since launching?
What better way to live life than to wake up every single day knowing you are doing something that makes your soul FEEL alive. I emphasize on the word feel because so many people just exist in this world. I do not want to just survive, I want to feel alive and thrive and I want the women who wear my garments to ‘feel’ the same; ALIVE.

Which city do you feel most at home in, London, Paris or New York?
Hands down it will always be London. Every time I set foot in that city my heart begins to beat again. I’m emotionally connected to it and it has been the only place in the world I have felt ‘at home’ in. The old and the new make everything very romantically nostalgic in such a beautiful way. I fell in love with the city and all it has given me. One day I will call it home, officially.

Three beauty products you can’t leave the house without?
Eyebrows, Nars Cruella Red Lipstick and moisturizer.

Style means….?
Style is your own personal aesthetic expressed in your own consistent and unique way. Style is who you are and how you present yourself to the world. It’s your message to the world & I want to be apart of that message.

Best thing about London to you?
I wish I could answer this honestly. For now, I will have to say the second best thing about London would be its personality.

Now, if you think cities do not have personlaities, you are crazier than I already know I am. The way London comes alive on the weekend and gets right down to business during the week, the beauty of the new and old architecture, the romance of the lights that light up the listed buildings, it all makes me feel like I’ve found my soul in this city.

Statement shoe or statement bag?
Shoes, always always SHOES.

If you had to, what item from your wardrobe would you wear every day?
I have a favorite leather pencil skirt from my FW15 collection that I cannot leave anywhere without. It’s a signature piece for obvious reasons; very strong, sleek classic & sexy all in one simple leather pencil skirt. Confidence is a powerful feeling, one this skirt never fails to make me feel.

Favorite love song?
I’m a sucker for love and no one would ever guess that. So to pick one would be like choosing between your best friends, almost impossible. My emotional connection with music is a strong one and very much like most people, music has carried me through many years of loves and losses. If I favor a song it is because I relate to it the most at that moment, and as of this moment, my favorite is “If You Ever Want To Be In Love,” by James Bay.

Best place for a coffee?
I do not care what anyone says, I am a very proud addict of Starbucks.

Most memorable piece of advice given to you?
Love yourself first & enough to be able to heal yourself first.

Guilty pleasure?
Love.

If you could spend 24 hours anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Alexander McQueen Archives.

In future, how do you plan on expanding the company?
We plan to expand and stock in boutiques in the UK & U.S.

Our team is also expanding and that is through the natural need to expand based on the growth of the business in the past year. I want CCUOCO to be accessible for women. A token of armor they can go to when needed, a staple piece in their closet – strength hanging on a hangar ready to be wrapped around a woman. That is CCUOCO.

Where can people find out more?
I always make sure the latest is updated on all social media platforms.

You can follow us almost daily on Twitter, Instagram & Facebook @HOUSEOFCCUOCO or CCUOCO.COM
