Leather is rare and luxurious. It is also nature’s most authentic, most permanent expression of beauty and here at House of Coco we stumbled across a brand that does leather an amazing justice : Jekyll & Hide.
We went behind the brand to find out more…
When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
The Jekyll & Hide story is a simple one – founded in 2003 we set out to create a combination of authentically crafted, genuine leather products, procured from the best leather merchants from all corners of the world. Our design teams in Cape Town and London look to what our core customer’s needs are in order to ensure we create products that are lifelong partners in the travels and adventures of life.
Whats your background?
My background is in sales and marketing and various other positions in and around the leather industry as far back as the 80’s.
How many people are involved in the company and what are their roles?
We have employees and offices in several countries on 4 different continents (Africa, Australia, Asia, & Europe). It would be too comprehensive to tell you about each employee but it should suffice to tell you that company consists of an interesting mix of people with a variety of backgrounds ranging from leather tradesmen, to designers, academics, craftsmen, and good, old-fashioned sales people.
If you could start over with the business, would you do anything differently?
Yes, I’d make a lot less mistakes 😉 But I am very happy with where we are today. The most important thing is not to avoid making mistakes, it is to learn from them and preferably not make the same mistake twice.
What is the hardest challenge you have faced since you started the company?
The hardest challenge has been to get enough money to finance all the different business projects and ventures I’d like to do. There is a long period from when we visualize and develop a new product and until we make any money on it.
Tell us one fact about you that people wouldn’t know?
I have a very strange sense of humour
2015 is here, where do you plan on taking the brand?
Well, the year is almost over…..this year we took the brand to France, Cyprus, Austria, Switzerland and Australia.
To date, what has been the highlight since launching?
The highlight was when we got over the initial hurdles and I experienced people taking to the brand and our style.
Which city do you feel most at home in, London, Paris or New York?
The fushion between look, functionality and feel.
Best thing about London to you?
