Girl Bosses of Great Britain : Farah Lakoues

Farah Lakoues is a creative genius who has channeled her inner fierce in to her new label, Lakoues. A brand that is not for the faint hearted, it’s bound to make you stand out from the crowd. Being ethical is at the core of this brand, Lakoues is set to make waves in the industry and #TeamCoco can’t wait to follow the epic journey.

Here, we talk to #Girlboss Farah to find out more about her plans for the brand, what challenges she has met along the way and so much more…

When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
I have always found my happy place in designing and creating things. That developed into studying Fashion at college, I got into University but I sacked it off, it wasn’t for me, to be honest I suck at being told what to do! I worked a number of freelance jobs in London assisting and then grew into Styling and Art Direction. Designing even took me to China, this is where my eyes were opened to what fully disturbs me about the fashion industry. The beginning of LAKOUES was born upon my return in 2013 and I launched this winter 2016.

Whats your background?
I was born in Sheffield, my Mother is British and my Father is Algerian.

How many people are involved in the company and what are their roles?
Just me! I have an accountant that advises me and my close friend is a brilliant photographer, Stephanie Galea, she takes all my pictures and has been an inspiration to me on so many levels.

And I wouldn’t even be here without my parent’s so they are massive in this.

My designs are all hand crafted in London at Forma.

If you could start over with the business, would you do anything differently?
Actually I wouldn’t change a thing. It has been a crazy few years with a lot of lows but the highs have made it all worthwhile and I am right proud of myself. I think there is no right way to go about pursuing your passion, you just have to trust yourself and be strong and it will always work out.

What is the hardest challenge you have faced since you started the company?
Finding a manufacturer I could trust. A lot of people out there are cowboys. Mine now, are legends, I am so fortunate to work with them.

2017 is nearly here, where do you plan on taking the brand?
New colour’s and shapes will drop over the next year, and I hope to have found a sustainable alternative to leather, but I am taking it slowly and carefully.

To date, what has been the highlight since launching?
Seeing my best friend and her boyfriend’s reactions when they tried on my jackets for the first time. I nearly flipping cried!

None to be honest! I am all about Yorkshire and the countryside.

Touche Eclat, Brow Duo and Eyelash curlers.

Style means….?
Whatever way you want.

Best thing about London to you?
My manufacturers!

Statement shoe or statement bag?
Shoes, bags irritate me if it doesn’t fit in my pocket it’s not coming out with me!

If you had to, what piece of clothing from your wardrobe would you wear everyday?
My xxl NFL jumper.

Only you – Portishead

Most memorable piece of advice given to you?
Love starts within.

Guilty pleasure?
Andy’s cooking.

If you could spent 24 hours anywhere in the world, where would it be?
An uninhabited, exotic beach – with all my friends.

In future, how do you plan on expanding the company?
LAKOUES will always be made ethically so I will never take it to mass production, I will however expand to selected stores and have a flagship one day.
