Designer Spotlight : Misia Mae

Misia Mae is about creating fashion accessories which are playful and elegant. It was founded in 2017 by Ewelina Rowntree. The brand name comes after Ewelina’s daughter Mia Bogusia, her Mum, and sister Anna. Ewelina lives and works in South East London.

Inspired by visual arts and urban living, playing with contrasts and unusual materials, like Lucite International perspex and 24 karat gold PVD coated pieces, Misia Mae’s classic, yet contemporary look is at the heart of all designs.

When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
I’ve always wanted to create a designer fashion accessories brand that would make women feel happy about the way they look. A brand that would be elegant and playful. It was important for me to work alongside Polish and British partners to ensure quality. However, it took me a long time to actually do it. Misia Mae was launched in April 2017.

What’s your background?
I’ve been re-inventing myself every few years, starting with the History of Art matriculation exam in Poland, followed by M.A in English. Then I did an MBA, and quite recently jewellery design course. Despite working most of my life in marketing for various businesses, my heart and soul have always been with the arts and design. Now I am so happy to be able to combine all that I love doing, my business background with designing.

How many people are involved in the company and what are their roles?
It is a one-woman operation at the moment, I am responsible for pretty much everything, apart from accounting!

If you could start over with the business, would you do anything differently?
Yes, I would have started it earlier! Seriously though, it requires a lot of resilience and self-belief, so I guess you need to be ready for it. Support from the family and friends comes very useful.

What is the hardest challenge you have faced since you started the company?
Being a working Mum of a three-year-old. Ask me that question in a year’s time, things may hopefully change! It’s been a steep learning curve.

Tell us one fact about you that people wouldn’t know?
I did a parachute jump, when I was 20. It was a one-off adventure, just for the thrill of it, to see how it feels. It felt incredible!

2017 is here, where do you plan on taking the brand?
I started by launching my first collection, Graphic No1, of four models of earrings, which are very graphic and geometric, inspired by fabulous film stars, Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe. I would like to increase the range. I am interested in combing unusual materials and textures, for example, Perspex with 24 karat gold plated pieces, Swarovski’s crystals and pearls, so watch out for the new pieces added!

To date, what has been the highlight since launching?
Being featured in British Vogue.

Which city do you feel most at home in, London, Paris or New York?
I am Polish born, and spent a lot of time in Warsaw, the city you love or hate, the city with great history, and most interesting places to experience. But I have been living in London for the last 10 years, and l love and feel at home in both.

Three beauty products you can’t leave the house without?
Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Foundation, Tarteist Double Take Eyeliner by Tarte, and Victoria Beckham for Estee Lauder Nude Spice Matte lipstick.

Style means….?
Timeless classic, effortless chic…

Best thing about London to you?
Amazing people from around the world, great parks, grand architecture, the fact that every part of London has a different feel to it, I wouldn’t like to live anywhere else.

Statement shoe or statement bag?
Oh tough choice, I will have to go with a bag. A new handbag is for me a bit like having your hair done, instantly I feel so much better!

If you had to, what piece of clothing from your wardrobe would you wear everyday?
I love my ME+EM dress, which I bought on sale this year. It’s gorgeous.

Favourite love song?
Purple Rain by Prince and Common People by Pulp. The last one may not be strictly a love song.

Best place for a coffee?
My local café, great coffee and great place to watch people passing by.

Most memorable piece of advice given to you?
Trust your instincts.

Guilty pleasure?
Red wine

If you could spent 24 hours in anywhere in the world, where would it be?
The Alps. I love mountains, both in winter, skiing, and in summer, hiking. But I haven’t done it for w while.

In future, how do you plan on expanding the company?
I’d love to expand Misia Mae to offer fashion accessories, including purses and handbags.
