Designer Spotlight : The Mannequin Collection

Two sisters, two souls, that’s the story behind The Mannequin Collection. Their collections might be small, but they’re also unique! Every single garment is designed and sewn by their team in Greece and comes in a limited number of pieces, so that every MAnnequin girl can feel special and unique when wearing our designs!

Here, we went behind the brand to find out more…

When did you launch the brand and what was the reason behind it?
The brand “The MAnnequin Collection” was officially launched in 2014.  However, it all began 2 years before, when we started designing and constructing clothes that we couldn’t find in the market for ourselves. The positive feedback we received pretty soon by our friends and acquaintances, was a stepping stone to launching our business and  sharing our designs with the rest of the world. Who knew that what had started as a hobby in a spare room of our house, would turn into an occupation for us.

What’s your background?
A: Although, I always had a love for fashion, I ended up studying Architecture, which actually proved to be really helpful, when I decided to pursue a career in fashion. I do believe that Architecture is a great basis for everyone who wants to become a designer.

M: I have a bachelor’s degree in Economics and a Master’s degree in Finance and Risk Management from Bocconi University. As I look back, it must have been these months spent in Milan, that have aroused this passion and determination to work in the  fashion business.

How many people are involved in the company and what are their roles?
The main people involved are the two of us actually. Normally, Anastasia, being a technical yet creative mind, is responsible for designing, pattern making and construction of all “MAnnequin” garments. Melina, on the other hand, undertakes everything related to the business part, i.e. marketing, financing, sales, strategy etc. Of course, we wouldn’t be able to realise our projects, without the valuable help of our graphic designer, photographer, and other associates.

If you could start over with the business, would you do anything differently?
Looking back we can find many things that we could have done in a different way, but then we realise that every setback, mistake or misfortune has helped us take a step further. In the long run, these experiences are the ones that provided to us the greatest lessons.

What is the hardest challenge you have faced since you started the company?
The hardest challenge actually, was starting the company. Having no previous experience in the field and with different backgrounds, launching our fashion brand proved to be a really hard task in the beginning. From everyday misfortunes, like sewing machines breaking down in critical moments, to other issues, like building a professional image or even trusting the wrong people, this journey has never been a bed of the roses.

Tell us one fact about you that people wouldn’t know?
A: As a little girl I wanted to become a hairdresser. Once creative, forever creative.

M: One of the things I have regret and only admitted to my really close ones, was leaving Milan.

If I could turn back time, this is definitely something I would have changed.

2018 is here, where do you plan on taking the brand?
Oh! There are so many things in our New Year’s resolution list for the brand. We definitely want to collaborate with more talented and creative people, design better and better collections and expand our business abroad.

To date, what has been the highlight since launching?
The highlight since launching was our very first collaboration with a store. It occurred when “MAnnequin” was transitioning from a hobby into a business. This amazing concept store in one of the fashion capitals of the world, Milan was the very first to host our collections. This is something to still be  really proud of.

Which city do you feel most at home in, London, Paris or New York?
A: Home is where dear friends are, so it has to be London.

M: Definitely London, but although not included in the list, Milan, where I spent a year studying, has a special place in my heart too.

Three beauty products you can’t leave the house without?
A: Red lipstick, mascara and hand cream.

M: Can’t leave the house without my perfume, mascara and a lipstick.

Style means….?
Feeling good about yourself anytime and anywhere.

Best thing about London to you?
The diversity in every single aspect, that can only be found in a big city like this! And of course, the fact that our fav friends, are there.

Statement shoe or statement bag?
A: My bag to me is like the shell to a snail, so statement bag for me!

M: You can’t take a big step without a statement shoe. I have a huge wardrobe full of them!

If you had to, what piece of clothing from your wardrobe would you wear everyday?
A: My favourite pair of jeans that makes me feel like my best self!

M: Although I don’t do it really often, I wish I would never have to leave the house without  a hat! I have a passion for them!

Favourite love song?
A: I believe that  “Something”, from The Beatles is the sweetest song ever written for a woman and I definitely would like someone to dedicate it to me.

M: “Don’t go away”, from Oasis.

Best place for a coffee?
Living in Greece, when we do find ourselves in London, we enjoy a cup of coffee at Ergon,  Maddox Street in Mayfair. It makes us feel like at home..

Most memorable piece of advice given to you?
If you seek for the perfect circumstances in order to start something, you will never do anything.

Guilty pleasure?
It would definitely have to involve chocolate.

If you could spent 24 hours in anywhere in the world, where would it be?
At this particular time and since we feel a bit overworked, all we can think of is an exotic island.

In future, how do you plan on expanding the company?
Our goal would be to grow bigger and bigger, taking small steps as we have done since day one, add new people to our team and maintain the quality of our design and construction, which mean a lot to us. We dream of a worldwide presence in the fashion world, without losing our identity in the process. Finally, we hope to continue to be pleasantly surprised by our course as a fashion brand in the years to come.
