Escape to The Cottage in the Wood: A Hidden Gem in the Malvern Hills

Taheed, our in-house stylist-turned-travel writer, shares his latest escape to The Cottage in the Wood Malvern. Set in the heart of the Malvern Hills, this idyllic retreat offers a perfect mix of luxurious comfort, stunning views and local charm.

The moment you step into The Cottage in the Wood Malvern, you’re met with a warm welcome that immediately sets the tone. The interiors, perfectly in tune with the building’s character, create an inviting atmosphere that feels both stylish and homely. A beautifully curated gallery staircase leads me up to my room, where the views over the Malvern Hills are nothing short of breathtaking. This area, designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is the perfect backdrop for a serene escape. I’ve never wished away time, but I’m already counting down the minutes until sunrise.

Inside, the room doesn’t just meet expectations — it exceeds them. The attention to detail is clear, with a vinyl player and an eclectic selection of records (including my favourite Massive Attack album, tucked away at the back). And after testing the bed (yes, it’s as comfortable as it looks), I know I’m in for a perfect night’s sleep.

The Cottage in the Wood Malvern feels like a home away from home — a place where relaxation comes naturally. The bathroom, with its grand roll-top bath positioned to take in those stunning views, invites you to unwind with a glass of red and a deep breath of fresh air. Luxury is in the details here, too — from carefully chosen amenities to the overall sense of calm that permeates the space.

Of course, I couldn’t visit a place without exploring the surroundings. Malvern, with its mix of charm and history, offers plenty to discover. From local markets brimming with artisanal goods to cosy pubs with roaring fires, every corner of this town feels inviting. The 11th-century Great Malvern Priory stands proudly at the heart of it all, a stunning testament to the area’s rich heritage. The best part? Stumbling upon a hidden pub with a roaring fire and a pint of local ale in hand. Whether you’re browsing through the artisan stalls or chatting with locals over a drink, Malvern’s blend of history, character, and unpretentious charm makes it impossible not to fall in love with.

After a day of exploring the picturesque Malvern Hills and its surrounding area, it’s time to indulge in the culinary delights of the in-house 1919 Restaurant at the The Cottage in the Wood Malvern. Perched atop the hills, this award-winning restaurant is nothing short of exceptional. With an impressive 3 AA Rosettes, the title of Worcestershire Restaurant of the Year twice, and a coveted spot in the Michelin Guide this year, 1919 offers a dining experience that’s as elevated as its location. The seven-course tasting menu is a triumph, with each dish beautifully crafted. The venison is perfectly cooked, the fresh trout and poached cod are delicate and refined and the tonka bean panna cotta steals the show, melting in the mouth with a perfect balance of creamy richness and subtle spice. Chef Mark Potts and his talented team have truly created a culinary journey worth savouring.

As the property celebrates its 10th anniversary in Summer 2025, it’s clear The Cottage in the Wood Malvern is only getting better. A hidden gem that deserves to be experienced — don’t wait too long to book your stay.
