Exploring the captivating city of Stockholm

A culture lover’s dream, Stockholm is the ideal city for a true culture fix, with over 100 museums to choose from, you won’t be short of things to see and do.

It’s the perfect blend of rich heritage and contemporary cool, offering abundant waterways, lush green spaces, spectacular architecture and more.

One of the best times to visit Stockholm is during the summer months, particularly at Midsummer  when the weather is warm, the days are long, and the city is alive with festivals and outdoor activities. But, it is equally as beautiful in the depths of winter too (and in particular at Christmas time)

Stockholm is one of the most unique cities, not just in Scandinavia, but Europe too. Made up of over 30,000 islands, this captivating archipelago which is stitched together by bridges and ferries with the city centre consists of 14 islands which are covered with lush forests, brightly-hued cottages and stretches of sandy beaches.

It’s recently been named one of the world’s top destinations for 2025 by National Geographic, the archipelago is easily accessible by boat and a boat tour is certainly an unmissable thing to add to your Stockholm ‘to do’ list.

You can take a boat tour of three hours which will take you past fjords, forts and some pretty stunning luxury homes. A tour from the water is certainly one of the best ways to experience Stockholm. This sightseeing tour takes you out into the Stockholm archipelago where you can get better acquainted with the famous Swedish nature and archipelago scenery as well as some of the city’s historical buildings.

From hiring a bike where you can explore the many cycling trails to wandering around Rosendals Garden with its cosy cafe, another unmissable highlight is Djurgården, one of the best places to enjoy one of Stockholm’s leafy green spaces.

Stortorget place in Gamla stan, Stockholm

Weave your way through the cobbled narrow streets of Gamla Stan – the old town which dates back to the 13th century. Here you will see intriguing ochre and mustard-hued buildings (including the very apartment that two members of the Swedish supergroup ABBA lived in!) the Royal Palace, Stockholm Cathedral, and a plethora of world-class museums

If you are looking to capture a glimpse of what Stockholm was like in the past, as well as taking a walk around Gamla Stan, you can also visit Skansen Museum, the world’s first open-air museum which features recreated Scandinavian period homes as they would have looked hundreds of years ago.

Skansen is an unmissable Stockholm highlight, it’s also home to an aquarium and a zoo, making it a perfect choice for all members of the family.

Museum lovers will have their fill of some of the best museums in Europe which includes the Maritime Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Medieval Museum, the Nobel Prize Museum and more. The Museum of Swedish history is particularly interesting and it offers candid exhibitions that explain the history of Stockholm and Sweden as a whole.

Of course, one of the most renowned things that Sweden is associated with is music and in particular ABBA. The music of ABBA can be celebrated at the fantastic ABBA museum which makes for a fun afternoon out. It’s one of the most interactive museums in the city and even if you aren’t an ABBA superfan, it’s definitely worth a visit as it’s so compelling.

The members of ABBA have been very involved in the curation of the museum’s exhibits,  from donating their memorable costumes to recording the Swedish-language audio guide. It can get busy so plan your visit time carefully, but as well as seeing the cars, costumes and musical instruments of the band, you can also test your knowledge of the band, try your hand at music producing and even dance on stage besides the silhouettes of the band. If someone offers you a chance to visit, unequivocally say ‘Gimme Gimme Gimme!”.

Think you know what a viking looks like? A trip to Stockholm’s Viking Museum may make you change your mind. It offers an intriguing deep dive into the history of the vikings and you may well find that your perception of what a stereotypical viking is might be challenged. There’s also a really cool ride that you can take which takes you through an interactive journey of a vikings pilgrimage,

If you are planning to visit a lot of museums and cultural attractions, definitely invest in the Stockholm Go City Pass (also known as the Go City All-Inclusive Pass) which is a dedicated all-in-one discount pass that affords you free entry to dozens of attractions across the Swedish capital, as well as some of the bus and boat tours. The pass is available on an app that you download onto your phone.

As well as museums and top-notch attractions, there are also great neighbourhoods to explore such as Soderhalm, SoFo which is fast becoming synonymous with its vibrant coffee culture.

Positively brimming with hipster coffee shops and cool boutiques, this is a great place to embrace the Swedish tradition of ‘Fika’ – coffee and a cake which is practically a social event in itself and is a huge part of Swedish culture.

Stockholm is at the helm of the pioneering new Nordic cuisine movement which focuses heavily on fresh and local ingredients. Not only that, the city is also a great destination for vegans, vegetarians and coeliacs as there’s a huge trend towards being more mindful about your carbon footprint as well as specific dietary requirements.

If your hotel doesn’t have a sauna and you feel that way inclined, then there are plenty of fantastic saunas where you can enjoy some serious R&R. Enjoying a regular sauna is an integral part of Swedish culture and is a must-do activity while visiting this pretty city, Why not head over to Hellasgården where you can relax in the sauna as well as taking a saunter around one of the splendid hiking trails around the lake.
