Paradise Reimagined
The navy-blue Indian Ocean drew me in from the moment the seaplane gently leveled off, en route to Seaside Finolhu Baa Atoll Resort, my home for the next week. As I settled in for the short flight, my son by my side, something caught my eye — a turquoise pool suspended in the deep blue ocean, reminding me of a giant, bright blue lily pad. And then there was another, and then another. These pools were so vivid, they seemed almost artificial, and as if an artist had splashed the ocean with tropical turquoise paint.
The resulting view is certainly one of the most beautiful sights I have ever encountered. It was a stunning prelude to the experience awaiting below: Seaside Finolhu Resort, a place where families can soak in all this wonder together. I had a full week to explore it along with my adult son, and this was going to be a mom-and-son trip of epic proportions.
Setting the Scene at Finolhu Resort
After a smooth ocean landing and a short taxi to the jetty, we were greeted by Finolhu’s best resource: its staff. The warm smiles, refreshing towels, and icy coconut water, were just what we needed to ease into island life. Soon, we were whisked off by Haneef, our roohu for the week, for a quick tour of the resort (in the Maldives, roohus are synonymous with butlers; and it’s the Maldivian word meaning “soul”). As Haneef began pointing out the resort’s many amenities, the stress of our journey began to fall away. Our buggy made its way down the jetty to our ocean villa, perched on stilts over pristine waters.
Our refreshing and roomy space was beautifully decorated in hues of blues and greens to match the Indian Ocean just below us. The oversized bed beckoned me to do a quick “Goldilocks” assessment. The pillows and bedding felt soft and cool on my skin: it was just right!
A spacious walk-in shower, standalone tub, expansive mirror, and flattering lighting completed the interior. Further exploration led me to the second outdoor shower — secluded, serene, and so welcoming.
There was more: an outside deck with a cosy daybed, sun lounges, an outdoor shower, and an inviting private pool that promised ultimate relaxation. About 30 metres from the deck, a cluster of black dots bobbed on the water’s surface. Snorkelers. Their excited chatter and frequent pauses over the reef sparked curiosity — and I was ready to join them.
Underwater Adventure for All Ages
As an adventurer, I had read a lot about the Baa Atoll’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. I knew the marine life would be spectacular — this atoll is home to sea turtles, countless tropical fish, and majestic manta rays. Manta ray season runs from May to November, with peak sightings between June and September.
While my trip was a bit early to witness the graceful manta rays, my view of an underwater world during our first snorkel revealed a mesmerizing kaleidoscope of tropical fish in blues, oranges, and yellows. We swam above giant clams and alongside graceful sea turtles propelling themselves elegantly through the reef — a spectacle so breathtaking that my son and I returned daily with our masks and fins, eager to lose ourselves in that underwater wonderland again and again.
We also ventured out from the house reef for a turtle safari. Armed with a rented GoPro and our snorkel gear, we boated to an area known for sea turtle sightings. We were warned it could be hit or miss — but we struck gold. Five sea turtles glided gracefully below us at different moments during our safari, each sighting more magical than the last.
A Family Vacation Without the Stress
One rainy afternoon, we ducked into the Art Lab and joined a candle-making class. The team was not only friendly but also incredibly helpful as we passed around melted wax and essential oils. The Art Lab offers more than just candle making; there’s painting, pottery, resin art, and other hands-on workshops. It was the perfect creative reset and a welcome pause from sun-soaked adventures.
We saw kids engaged in endless foosball games, paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming, and enjoying the large water park, which thrills kids of all ages. Finolhu Resort also offers the Oceaneers Club, a vibrant hub for young visitors, giving parents peace of mind while their kids enjoy tailored adventures of their own. The sound of laughter drifting from the club, plus the sleepy faces at dinner, told us everything we needed to know: the kids were having the time of their lives.
Teenagers aren’t left out either, and as a parent, I know the pressure to keep teens entertained and joyfully unplugged while on family holiday. Finolhu Resort’s Teens Hut offers daily activities including snorkel trips, milkshake-making classes, and jam sessions with real instruments included.

While I visited with my family, there’s no denying the Maldives is a dreamy honeymoon destination too. An oversized tray of morning delights is gently placed in your private pool, setting the scene for the laziest, most luxurious morning imaginable. The tray’s arrival was quite a spectacle on its own, only outdone by the custom breakfast spread it carried.
Each morning, Beach Kitchen delivers a bounty of choices — Eggs Benedict of the Day, an omelette station, yoghurt bowls, tropical fruits, and my favorite: sweet French toast with a fresh smoothie and a generous helping of sunshine.
After a morning of snorkeling or walking Finolhu Resort’s endless sandbank, we grabbed a shaded table at the Beach Club. Burgers, poke bowls, and crisp salads were the perfect fuel. From the poolside loungers to the swim-up bar, it’s an easygoing space that transforms each night into a beach disco with upbeat music and happy guests.
As a first-timer, I quickly realised I was in good company — many guests were already on their second or third visit to Finolhu Resort.
Evenings were a culinary dream. At Kansusan, the Japanese restaurant, we chose the tasting menu and were treated to an artful progression of sushi, seafood, and one unforgettable mango crème brûlée.
The Arabian Grill delivered just as beautifully, with a mezze platter of hummus, baba ghanoush, falafel, and warm pita followed by a rich lamb tagine. Do not skip The Explosion, a chocolate-dipped date infused with Arabic coffee. It lives up to the name in every way.
Prefer a casual dinner? Themed buffets at Beach Kitchen include Maldivian Night, when local women from neighbouring islands prepare authentic dishes where you will also be treated to tribal drum-and-fire dances. Don’t miss it. It’s a rare and respectful window into Maldivian culture, served alongside show-stopping flavors.
The Crab Shack, located at the far end of the sandbank, is accessible by ferry or a breezy 1.8 km beach walk. The lobster rolls, pastas, and watermelon martinis are legendary. A DJ soundtrack and barefoot dancing in the sand round out the vibe.
Self-Care for Parents (and Kids)
Hidden in lush greenery, Fehi Spa offers steam rooms, saunas, cold plunge pools, and serene treatment huts away from the buzz of the resort.
I chose the Shirodhara treatment, where warm oil gently flowed across my forehead in a rhythmic stream — instantly melting away what little stress remained.

Sustainability Meets Luxury
