Solo travel is an incomparable experience; the perfect opportunity to learn more about yourself, face your fears, push your boundaries and create some real memories. Solo travel can be however you want it to be, in whatever way makes your own journey more special.

Here are some great ideas to get you started if you’ve never done it before.

Join a tour group

Solo travel is the perfect opportunity to escape the crowds and explore on your own, at your own pace, but that doesn’t mean you should avoid people altogether. Joining an official tour group for specific sight-seeing means you can integrate with people on the same journey as you, and more than likely meet some other solo travellers along the way. This can make your experience more fun and valuable, and is recommended for those activities which perhaps aren’t safe to try alone, such as hiking unknown terrain in demanding conditions.

Rent an RV

Choosing RV rental for your trip makes solo travel a whole lot easier, more accessible and safer. Having a fully-kitted out motorhome at your disposal means you’ll save a ton of money on separate accommodation options if you’re planning on moving around a lot. It also means you’ll always have access to facilities when you need them the most. It will give you more freedom during your trip, as you will be able to drive wherever and whenever you like.

Plan enough, but not too much

When you’re travelling alone, planning is essential – both to make the trip more memorable and to keep you safe. Extra planning is required when travelling alone as you only have yourself to depend on, and you need to be aware of your travel arrangements, accommodation and financial situation in advance.

However, it’s also a good idea to leave wiggle room in your schedule, and consider leaving a day or two free with no activities planned. This means that when you see new places on your trip, you have time to venture off the beaten track and try new things which you might not have even known were there. This could include a local recommendation from a native who has insider knowledge, or an activity you happened to notice a sign for whilst driving along.

Step out of your comfort zone

Solo travel can be one of the scariest things you’ll ever do – in a good way. It can be challenging to step out into the unknown on your own in search of adventure. With this in mind, it’s a good idea to incorporate as many fear-inducing things as possible into your solo adventure. This could include adrenaline-fuelled activities you’ve always wanted to try, such as skydiving, but never had the courage to, or it could include trying new cuisine which you’ve never been willing to experience before. Solo travel is the prime opportunity to try a bunch of things you would never have the nerve to try back at home – and you’ll thank yourself for it later.
