Get Us To The Greek: Suvlaki Review

Unfortunately, we couldn’t book a last minute getaway to Santorini, so we opted for the next best thing. Right in the heart of London, we sent our Lifestyle Writer, Helena, to have a taste of Suvlaki.

Tucked away in the heart of Soho down a little side road and covered in Greek graffiti lies Suvlaki, a restaurant inspired by the street food of Greece with a gourmet touch. Fresh, healthy and so tasty!

The interior is small and intimate, cosy chairs, ink-blue walls with marble columns running through the restaurant, rustic plates and a traditional Athenian feel. Conceived by the London-based Greek designer Afroditi Krassa, the interiors were inspired by the satirical graffiti and nonchalant charm of Greece’s urban neighborhoods, and the restaurant seats just 34. With an open-plan grill kitchen as soon as you walk through the doors, you can watch the chef’s at work.

Greek side salad, baked feta and 3 mini wraps

The menu is concise and straight to the point. Chicken, pork, lamb and vegetables are wrapped in warm pitas, or served on skewers. Greek-style burgers are stuffed with feta and surrounded by pitta bread, the salads are flavoursome and fresh, and fries which are sprinkled with oregano. The Suvlaki Exuberance (for two to share), comes with a choice of two skewers, two mini wraps, four sides and a pitta burger. Perfect if you want to experience a little bit of everything, priced at £34. The lamb and chicken are seasoned and cooked to perfection with a charcoal grilled taste that you find familiar in any Middle Eastern cooking.

The sides are more than generous, Greek Salad, layered with crispy cucumber and cherry tomatoes, Cretan Salad, made with barley rusk, capers and crumbled feta, the fries sprinkled with oregano (amazing dipped into the tkaziti) and baked feta, with tomatoes, kalamata olives and herbs. There was definitely no shortage of feta cheese in the meal.

The only dessert offered on the menu, and favourite part of the evening was the traditional chocolate biscuit cake with homemade Greek coffee ice cream. The ice cream was refreshing, tasty and so fresh and complemented the cake perfectly.

Suvlaki is the perfect lunch or dinner spot for a snack or a Greek treat in a relaxing and friendly atmosphere. Well-cooked food, fresh ingredients, and healthy. You can’t go wrong!
