A Band That Defined a Generation
Whenever I hear the classic and ubiquitous Reef song ‘Place Your Hands’ it instantly transports me back to hanging out at the legendary Purple Turtle bar in Reading. Whilst this track is one of the band’s most loved tracks and one of the most recognisable tracks of the nineties, the West Country rockers have so many bangers in their canon.
They formed in 1993 in Glastonbury, England, gaining early attention from both the music press and fans thanks to their energetic live shows and their 1995 debut album ‘Replenish’ which showcased a mix of blues, rock, and funk influences. Their 1997 album ‘Glow’ brought mainstream success with hits like ‘Place Your Hands’ establishing them as one of the leading UK rock acts of the 1990s.
Over the years, Reef has released six studio albums and various live and ‘best of’ albums which showcase their intoxicating live sound. Known for catchy riffs, powerful vocals, and high-energy performances, the band has remained an enduring presence in the British rock scene for decades.
Reef Prove Why They Remain One of Britain’s Most Enduring Live Acts
Reef delivered a masterclass in live music at the O2 Academy Bournemouth, reminding a sold-out crowd exactly why they became one of the leading UK rock acts of the 1990s. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of debut album Replenish, the West Country rockers played with razor-sharp precision and raw energy from the very first riff. Frontman Gary Stringer owned the stage with his magnetic presence, and the band’s chemistry was electric throughout, making it clear their passion for performing has never dimmed across their three decades together.
Place Your Hands and the Power of a Greatest Hits Set
The second half of the night played out like a greatest hits set, and it was equally as enthralling as the Replenish run. Crowd favourites including Come Back Brighter, Higher Vibration and Place Your Hands brought the house down, while the beautiful Summer’s In Bloom offered a more reflective moment in an otherwise high-octane evening. The band’s authentic bond with the audience was palpable throughout, turning a nostalgic anniversary show into something genuinely electric and unforgettable for longtime fans.
Replenish Turns 30: A Live Celebration
The band performed their entire 1995 debut album ‘Replenish’ in celebration of its 30th anniversary, but there was also an opportunity to revisit both fan favourites and more deeper cuts that were delivered with a real sense of energy and intensity.
Reef’s chemistry was electric — every member showcasing a deep, unshakable passion for what they do. They embraced their nostalgic roots while injecting new life into their iconic sound, which has continued to evolve through their releases over the years.
While many tracks from ‘Replenish’ have become live staples over the years, the anniversary show also featured several songs that haven’t been performed in ages. With frontman Gary Stringer commenting that, “There are probably four or five songs from the album we haven’t played in at least 10 years. That’s one of the reasons we thought it was worth having a rehearsal or two before the tour.”
Reef’s music remains timeless, continuing to connect with both longtime fans and a new generation, but at the sold out crowd at Bournemouth’s O2 Academy, it was predominantly filled with legacy fans who remained as enthusiastic about the band as they did back in the nineties.
An Electrifying Night with Reef
From the opening riff, the band — propelled by amiable frontman Gary’s unmistakable energy — captivated the entire room. He’s the quintessential rock frontman and absolutely owned the stage with his magnetic presence, captivating the audience with each song.
As the West Country veterans blaze through ‘Feed Me’, ‘Naked’ (which, fun fact, was the original name of the band before their record label requested it to be changed) and ‘Good Feeling’, they hit full throttle with the crowd completely enthralled.
The album, which was played in its entirety, is brilliant and was delivered with razor-sharp precision and raw energy. But the second half was also equally as enthralling which played out more like a greatest hits set.
Reef kicked off the second part with the wonderful ‘A Stone For Your Love’, which was positively hypnotic, and this was closely followed by ‘I Would Have Left You’ from the 1997 number one album ‘Glow’ which almost twenty years on sounds absolutely brilliant and is a great reminder of Reef’s impressive back catalogue.
A highlight of the night came with their rip-roaring performance of ‘Come Back Brighter’, a cherished fan favorite. The crowd danced and sang along as the band’s infectious energy soared.
It was a striking reminder of Reef’s lasting appeal, showcasing music that continues to captivate and bring together fans across generations. ‘Higher Vibration’ was as you would expect, a total vibe and, of course, ‘Place Your Hands’ brought the house down. Another highlight was the beautiful ‘Summer’s In Bloom’ which was absolutely glorious.
The band’s remarkable talent, relentless energy, and authentic bond with the audience effortlessly combined to create an unforgettable evening of live music.
