There’s a lot to consider when booking a cottage for an escape to the countryside. Location comes high on the list. Long rambles in nature and a cosy pub to retreat to afterwards are a staple part of any countryside retreat itinerary. Decor is also important — we often crave calming interiors with a traditional feel to top off the experience. But one thing that can truly set a property apart is its amenities. And we might just have found the most well-equipped cottage in the UK.
Grooms Cottage is one of three newly renovated properties in the grounds of the historic Grade I listed Netherwitton Hall in Northumberland. The cottages were renovated by the estate’s owners in 2024. John and Francesca stripped back the original buildings and reimagined them as high-standard holiday homes, retaining the property’s original character while adding a luxurious finish. The couple put sustainability at the forefront of their vision – the heating and hot water is provided by a biomass system that uses sustainable timber from the Netherwitton Hall Estate.
Inside, the relaxing space is decorated in an elegant, neutral colour palette with nods to its history, such as historic maps adorning the walls, throughout. The benefit of this cottage being newly renovated is that the owners have thought of everything one could need for a perfect weekend away — there’s an entrance hall with ample space for coats and boots ready for country walks, a cosy lounge area with a large televison for movie nights (which can also be adjusted to face the kitchen for those who like to sample some entertainment while cooking), a generous walk-in shower downstairs complete with botanical toiletries, as well as elegant glassware and crockery — and every kitchen gadget you could think of.
Inside Grooms Cottage
Grooms Cottage is a two-person property, ideal for a couple or friends, or a peaceful retreat for a solo escape to the countryside. Walking in, I was greeted with a huge bunch of tulips and a welcome hamper packed with local treats, such as Heatherslaw Cornmill Deluxe Muesli, eggs, and freshly baked bread, providing everything a guest would need for a hearty breakfast before exploring the local area.
Lighting is, of course, another key factor in creating a relaxing ambience, and it’s been carefully considered at Grooms Cottage. In the summer months, natural light pours through the original sash windows late into the evening, casting a warm, golden glow across the downstairs area. After dark, a sophisticated dimmer system allows guests to tailor the lighting to suit the mood.
Upstairs, this intimate two-person property feels like a love nest, with a large bath set into an alcove next to a huge, comfortable bed loaded with cushions and throws. Mirroring the pastel-toned decor of the rest of the property, the bath (complete with a heated towel rail for extra comfort) is lined with pink tiles and situated beneath a skylight offering the opportunity for stargazing. A window seat provides serene views over the estate gardens — it’s an idyllic setting for a romantic weekend escape and the perfect place to unwind and reconnect.
Romance aside, Grooms Cottage is also an excellent option for families. Hall Cottage next door, which sleeps three, is available for booking alongside Grooms Cottage for larger gatherings. The property is also dog-friendly (one dog only for an additional fee of £25) for those who wish to bring their four-legged friend along.
Netherwitton Hall
Part of the property’s allure is its grand surroundings. Architecture enthusiasts will appreciate learning about the history of Netherwitton Hall, which dates all the way back to 1405. The family property, as it stands today, was built in 1695 by architect Robert Trollope and remains a fascinating example of 17th‑century English country house design.
While Netherwitton Hall and its walled gardens operate as a private residence, guests are invited to explore the grounds of the estate and immerse themselves in the stunning natural surroundings — I was kindly given a map of local walking routes to explore during my stay. The Estate surrounding the cottage comprises 5,200 acres, which includes dense woodland ideal for a spot of Forest Bathing, if a mindful walk in the woods is high on your mini-break agenda.
What to do in the local area
While the Cotswolds and Lake District may get a great deal of press when it comes to natural beauty, Northumberland is one of our country’s unsung heroes when it comes to an escape to the countryside.
Here you’ll find acres and acres of unspoiled countryside, tranquil lakes, charming coastal paths, and epic clifftop views. It really is a paradise for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts, without the crowds that can sometimes accompany busier areas.
History enthusiasts will appreciate the property’s convenient location, with landmark sites such as Hadrian’s Wall and the majestic Bamburgh Castle, both within easy reach by car. Seafood lovers, meanwhile, will appreciate Northumberland’s renowned shellfish heritage, particularly its oysters. The nearby Holy Island of Lindisfarne is one of the oldest oyster-producing regions in the country, and its famed Lindisfarne oysters are now a staple on the menus of top restaurants throughout the UK.
One of the main deciding factors when visiting a rental property is whether you would recommend it to a friend, and I can say wholeheartedly that I’d advise anyone looking for a restful few nights in the countryside to consider Grooms Cottage. The hosts have really thought of everything you might need for a restorative break in relaxing surroundings.
