There’s something uniquely enchanting about the festive season in England, where historic landmarks, twinkling lights, and indulgent feasts weave a spell of pure holiday magic. My recent trip to Hampton Court Palace Festive Fayre, accompanied by our Editor-in-Chief, Laura Bartlett, was nothing short of spellbinding—a girls’ getaway to celebrate the season, explore the beauty of the Hampton Court at Christmas, and indulge in its festive delights.
Our journey began in style, courtesy of Lexus, the generous sponsors of this festive experience. They provided us with a week-long loan of their all-new LBX hybrid compact crossover. From the moment the sleek, futuristic vehicle arrived at my doorstep, it was clear this was no ordinary ride. Its luxurious interior and intuitive features set the tone for what was to be an unforgettable trip. Navigating the roads to Hampton Court Palace was an absolute pleasure; the vehicle’s refined handling and quiet cabin ensured we arrived relaxed and ready for a weekend of festive joy.
Mitre Hampton Court: A Hotel Steeped in History and Festivity
Nestled just across the road from the iconic Hampton Court Palace, the Mitre Hampton Court Hotel was our base for the trip. Dating back to the 17th century, this riverside gem effortlessly blends historic charm with contemporary luxury. Originally built as a lodging house for guests of the palace, the Mitre boasts a rich history that echoes through its elegant halls and beautifully appointed rooms.
As we entered, we were greeted by a festive wonderland. Twinkling lights adorned every corner, wreaths hung gracefully on doors, and the scent of pine mingled with mulled wine. The hotel’s decor is a masterclass in tasteful opulence. Velvet armchairs, intricate chandeliers, and a palette of deep blues and golds create a regal yet inviting atmosphere. It’s clear the Mitre takes its inspiration from the grandeur of Hampton Court Palace itself.
After settling into our luxurious room, the King’s Singer, situated on the top floor—complete with plush bedding and delightful festive touches—we headed to the hotel’s restaurant for dinner. The menu was a celebration of seasonal flavours. We started with calamari, perfectly crispy and served with a beautiful dipping sauce, and teriyaki cauliflower, a scrumptious dish that balanced sweet and savoury notes to perfection. For the main course, I indulged in tender steak draped in a rich mushroom sauce. Each bite was a testament to the Mitre’s commitment to culinary excellence.
Breakfast the following morning was served in the beautifully decorated breakfast room, where garlands and baubles added a festive sparkle to our meal. Freshly brewed coffee, buttery croissants, and a hearty English breakfast set the tone for another day of exploration.
Hampton Court Palace: A Step Back in Time
Directly opposite the hotel lies Hampton Court Palace, a majestic testament to Tudor and Baroque architecture. The palace, famously associated with Henry VIII, offers visitors a glimpse into the opulent world of one of England’s most iconic monarchs. As we crossed the road and entered the palace grounds, we were immediately struck by its vast beauty. Red brick towers, sprawling gardens, and the gentle hum of history make Hampton Court a place where time seems to stand still.
During our visit, the palace was hosting its annual Christmas festival, transforming the historic site into a festive wonderland. The courtyard buzzed with life as visitors explored artisan stalls offering handcrafted gifts, festive treats, and warming beverages. The sound of traditional festive tunes and a buzz of excitement filled the air and it was impossible not to feel swept up in the holiday spirit.
Inside the palace, we marvelled at the Great Hall, its walls adorned with magnificent tapestries that once witnessed the grand feasts and celebrations of Henry VIII’s court. The Tudor Kitchens, one of the palace’s most fascinating features, were a hive of activity with costumed guides bringing history to life. The gardens, even in winter, were a sight to behold. The intricate patterns of the Privy Garden, the tranquillity of the Pond Gardens, and the grandeur of the Great Vine—the world’s oldest and largest vine—left us in awe.
Lexus: The Perfect Travel Companion
As part of our festive adventure, Lexus offered a unique opportunity to experience their latest innovations. Beyond our loaned LBX hybrid compact crossover, the event showcased an impressive lineup of luxury vehicles, including the RZ all-electric BEV SUV and UX300e electric SUV, highlighting Lexus’s commitment to sustainable luxury without compromising on style or performance. For those interested, test drives were available, allowing guests to experience the seamless blend of technology and craftsmanship firsthand.
The LBX hybrid stood out for its compact design, making it ideal for navigating both city streets and countryside roads. Its combination of hybrid efficiency, stylish aesthetics, and advanced features made it a standout companion for our trip, embodying the perfect blend of form and function.
Christmas Markets and Festive Shopping
The Christmas markets at Hampton Court are a highlight of the festive season. Stalls brimming with unique gifts, artisanal food, and seasonal décor provided endless inspiration for holiday shopping. Laura and I wandered through the market, sipping on festive coffee as we admired handmade ornaments, bespoke jewellery, and gourmet delights. Each stall seemed to tell a story, and it was heartwarming to see the craftsmanship and passion of the vendors.
Beyond the markets, the stores near Hampton Court offer an array of shopping experiences. From boutique shops to charming antiques, the area is a treasure trove for those seeking special holiday finds. It’s a place where modern tastes and traditional charm coexist beautifully.
