How to get into sailing

2022/10/27

When searching for a new hobby, you want something that’s both exhilarating and rewarding – and sailing is great for both. Whether you want to try your hand at racing or simply enjoy the water, taking up boating is a great way to push your mental and physical capabilities in the name of sport.

Though a great way to unwind, it can be tricky to know how to get started, especially if you don’t live near any water. Not to worry, though; we’ve made a list of ways in which you can get into sailing so that you can focus on getting out there on the water.

Go to a school

There are more than a few boating schools dotted around the UK and there’s nowhere better to get started with your boating hobby. To ensure that you’re getting the most up-to-date professional training, it’s best to find a training centre recognised by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA). There, you can sign up for classes that will cover everything from steering and ropes to handling the sails.

Once you’re up to speed on safety and the basics, it might be time to take out boat insurance which could protect you if you decide to invest in one of your own. Find your closest RYA training centre and get started on your sailing adventure.

Join a club

Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals is sure to boost your boating knowledge and the perfect place to find them is by joining a boat club. You can develop your skills with other enthusiasts who have first-hand sailing experience and push your abilities to their maximum on the water with your team.

Boat clubs are also a great solution for those of us with busy work schedules and lifestyles. You won’t have to spend any of your leisure time on boat maintenance, so you have the joy of the boating experience without the responsibility of upkeep.

Charter a yacht

When your training is complete and you’re well on your way to becoming a seasoned boater, why don’t you make the leap and charter a yacht? After all, there is no better teacher than experience. Immersing yourself in sailing is a great way to know the ins and outs of chartering a vessel as well as levelling up your expertise so that you’re prepared for any situation that arises while on the water.

Though not an easy process, chartering a yacht is a worthwhile option to further your sailing abilities. It’s also an experience that can be shared with your family and friends, which will remind you why you were so excited to get out on the water in the first place.
