All relationships need a bit of extra attention and TLC to keep them fresh and exciting; it’s about compromise, a bit of giving as well as take.

Including in marriages.

It’s all too easy to think because you’ve been together for so long that you don’t have to think about making that extra special effort with and for each other.

There are certain things we can do to ensure our marriages are still enjoyable – no one likes being taken for granted.

So, whether you’ve been married for six months or sixteen years, it’s normal for the flame to diminish somewhat…

At the beginning of any relationship, it tends to be more exciting, and we make more of an effort to keep our partner happy and interested, but, as time passes, you may both stop trying as hard.

It’s often doing the simplest things for each other that make us realize why we got together in the first place.

Perhaps it’s as easy as buying them their favorite bunch of flowers or giving them a back rub at the end of a long day. If you have kids, keep a list of babysitters on deck. Alone time is a necessity for a married couple.

It might even be to say something beautiful to them – praise is always appreciated.

Sometimes it’s all too easy to let life get in the way of each other, particularly if we have children.

So, we’ve come up with five suggestions to help kick-start that marriage of yours…

Five Steps to Keep Your Marriage Alive

  1. Routine

It’s all too easy to get into a routine when you’ve been with someone for a while, and that routine can quickly turn into a rut.

If your life has become a little too predictable, break your routine and do new things – complacency is terrible for any relationship.

  1. Shock

When was the last time you gave your partner a surprise or a pleasant shock?A cheeky text or photo can get their pulses racing and take them out of their comfort zone, perhaps adding a bit of spice to your relationship again!Maybe just offering to order their favorite takeaway will surprise them and give them a feel-good factor.

  1. Communicate and chuck the chores

We all have to do tedious jobs around the house, but why not do them together and chat while you’re doing them rather than doing them resentfully on your own.Who knows, perhaps a bit of bonding over the dishwasher will remind you both how special togetherness can be.

  1. Time-out for technology

Perhaps it’s all too easy to be distracted with your phone, the computer or the television?

Put them away and encourage conversation, perhaps over a glass of wine.A bit of quality time together never did any harm.

  1. Date-night

When was the last time you both ditched the kids and booked a babysitter so you could go out just the two of you?

You can rekindle that romantic love you used to freely share until things got in the way.

An evening together at the cinema, having a meal, the theatre or just shopping can do your relationship power of good.

So, by communicating more regularly and appreciating the person we married will help keep your relationship alive.

Just don’t forget to book the babysitter – it’s not quite as romantic with the whole family in tow and defeats the object!

Good luck!
