Ideas for Romantic Getaways this Valentine’s Day

For some, Valentine’s Day is a panic-fuelled purchase at the supermarket on your way home from work. You know you’ve put in no effort at all and you can see the fake gratitude as you turn up with one of the last bunches of disheveled looking flowers and a smile. If this sounds familiar, maybe it is time you stop taking your loved one for granted and pulled a surprise out of the bag this year?

Nothing beats being whisked away for a surprise weekend when it comes to romantic gestures. If you’re one of those people that tend to forget the big occasions or are prone to underwhelming your loved one, then make up for it this year with a trip away. You don’t have to spend a fortune and if work and/or family commitments don’t allow for much time then there are still some great options to treat the one you love.

Countryside Retreat – Head into the countryside for a short break. Find a cosy Bed and Breakfast or quaint hotel for an overnight stay. If you’re looking to keep costs down, instead of going out for an expensive meal, order a couple of food hampers to take out on a long romantic walk. The great outdoors is absolutely free and is certainly a lot more private than a posh restaurant. If you can pre-plan your picnic spot, find somewhere with picturesque scenery and don’t forget a picnic blanket!

Prague – Not many people consider Prague when they are looking for a romantic destination but the beautiful city sets the tone for the perfect weekend away. Timeout recently featured an article on top things to do in Prague and highlighted the riverside as the idyllic romantic venue, with a number of great bars and restaurants to choose from. Charles Bridge and the Old Town are top tourist attractions that offer both romantic settings and a spot of culture for your trip.

Venice – A bit of a cliché but if you are looking to push the boat (or Gondola) out then this should win you some brownie points. A trip to Venice, with a boat trip along the river is hard to beat on the grand romantic gesture front. The many traditional Italian restaurants also provide exceptionally good dining options to impress your loved one.

New York – If you’ve never been to New York with your better half then this could be the perfect destination. Until you have experienced New York for yourself, you will never be able to understand its many beautiful attractions. Whether you head to Central Park, walk over Brooklyn Bridge, take the ferry to Staten Island or go to the top of the Empire State Building, there is so much choice of romantic venue in this fabulous city. Broadway also provides an opportunity to take your loved one to some of the best shows in the world. There are also a lot of great restaurants to complete the whole romantic experience.
